If you could have a walker, a wheelchair, crutches, prosthetic arm/leg/etc. or a home/workplace with unlimited accessibility of any style and any kind, what would that look like? What secret powers would they have? How do you re*imagine mobility and disability?

Opulent Mobility is a juried gallery show devoted to re-imagining mobility and disability. It will be held at the Bell Arts Factory in Ventura, CA from September 6-8, 2013, opening on their popular First Friday. The gallery is beautifully designed for wheelchair and walker accessibility.

They are looking for 2D art that helps start a conversation about what works and what doesn’t in mobility and disability devices, designs and everyday living.

The natural world has fascinated photographers since the invention of the medium. Botanicals are props in portraiture, examined in landscapes, and rendered as patterns in décor and apparel.

Preserving the ephemeral quality of plant-life as a still image allows viewers to contemplate the beauty and complexity of natural forms, but it also allows artists to re-purpose nature for our own expressive ends. Whether in bloom or decay, edible or admirable, mammoth or miniscule, all interpretations of flora are welcome for The Kiernan Gallery’s exhibition, Botanicals.

JUROR: Sharon Beals is the author and photographer of Nests: Fifty Nests and the Birds that Built Them. Her images have been published in both science and art publications, including Scientific American and American Photo, which named Nests one of the best photo books of 2011.

Her work is in many private collections and was purchased by Art in Embassies for the US Embassy in Riga. Following her environmental path, she collects and photographs beach plastic to make large scale, deceptively beautiful yet confrontational prints. She is represented by Cordon/Potts Gallery in San Francisco.

AWARDS: All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced and both winners will receive a free copy of the catalogue.

SALES: Kiernan Gallery no longer takes commission on sold works. But, they DO still have incentive to sell your work. The Kiernan Gallery was founded by an emerging artist, and recognizes the importance of selling work; they believe that if artists are paying a submission fee, the gallery should not also take a portion of the sale. They do reserve the right to negotiate 20% in order to make a sale.

I have drafted a dozen cookbooks in my head. They are usually inspired by whatever food eccentricity I am dwelling on at the moment. But they always have their roots in momentary excitement as opposed to being deep-rooted in a true philosophy about food. Maybe if I ever find myself, a cookbook will make it out of the draft stage. CALL for ENTRIES: Rootlessness

The exhibition series will consist of two sections – Works on Paper and Works on Space – and one exhibition proposal for each section will be chosen and realized on New York’s Lower East Side.

NY has historically been home to ethnically diverse immigrants, inspiring feelings and experiences related to migration, temporality, transformation, assimilation, or conflict. DRAFTspace is hosting this exhibition series to provoke attention and discussion about this sense of rootlessness. Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme creatively.

The theme of rootlessness is connected to the unique space setup and location. The exhibit will not be held in a permanent gallery space. Instead, it will temporarily occupy a street-level vacant retail space that will be consecutively transformed to fit the different identity and characteristics of each exhibition.

The Lower East Side where this event will take place has long been an immigrant neighborhood and has seen a series of immigrant communities pass through it. The area has undergone gentrification, starting in the mid-2000s and has since become home to upscale boutiques and numerous contemporary art galleries.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Photography, or Illustration for “Works on Paper” section OR Sculpture or Site-Specific Mixed Media Installations for “Works on Space” section

JUROR: Leah Leitson received her MFA in ceramics from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, and her undergraduate BFA in ceramics from New York State College of Ceramics. Leitson is a member of the Piedmont Craftsmen, Inc., and the Southern Highland Craft Guild. She teaches workshops throughout the United States including Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and the Arrowmont School of Crafts in Tennessee.

Leah works exclusively in porcelain; her work is inspired by 18th and 19th century decorative arts, particularly utilitarian silver tableware and Sevres porcelain. She is also inspired by plant forms in nature, and tries to integrate the two so that they become one. Her work has been featured in national and int’l exhibits, and is collected by museums and private collectors.

My kitchen is clean-ish. Can you eat off my floors? Absolutely not. I am pretty good about cleaning as I cook so there isn’t a disaster to clean up afterward. And, crumb-y counters are my pet peeve; so I keep them wiped down. But despite my best efforts, I have an ant problem. I find a dozen or so small black ants on my kitchen counters every time I go in. Nothing stretches the photographic imagination like a visit to a strange new world, but on this trip you needn’t go far to find a photo worthy subject; the wonderful world of bugs intersects and parallels our own. Like humans, bugs are everywhere! So this month, forget the cobwebs of your mind, grab your camera and your knee pads and worm your way into the nooks and crannies of the fantastic world of the creepers and the crawly! Be here now and in tune with the buzz…. this month 1650 celebrates life — a bug’s life!

JUROR: Andrew Overtoom is an award winning filmmaker and photographer living in Los Angeles. He publishes THE UNDEAD NEG photography blog and is currently launching a quarterly fine art photography journal. He is also the owner/curator of 1650 Gallery in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

AWARDS: Approximately 50 works will be chosen from submitted photographs to be included in the I’LL BE YOUR MIRROR exhibition at 1650 Gallery in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Additional works may also be selected for an online gallery exhibition page.

WATT makes street maps of fictional cities, encrypted with stories & secrets. They are often based on all the wonderful places he has been and the wonderful places he hopes to go. He wants to explore both the real and imaginary and the links between them. Watt's city maps take on organic forms, much like a bloodstream, clotted with city blocks.

Watt has exhibited internationally, and his work has been featured in online and print publications.

In the ongoing saga of kitchen creativity, my most recent attempt at mint chocolate chip went a little off course. Who new 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint extract would be too much in 1 1/2 quarts of ice cream. Just trust me on this one. I suppose this was a drawback to complete kitchen freedom, ha. Film & video have become easily accessible. One can watch content on a website, television, a home projector, or even a cell phone. For some artists and filmmakers those vehicles are copies of the original artwork, each one degraded by its format. MNA believes there is a magic in seeing the film projected as a print. There is a presence a poet has reading his/her own writing. There is a feeling that resonates in your chest when seeing a band live. For these reasons MNA encourages live music, performance and audio to expand the cinematic experience beyond the screen. MNA asks that in the spirit of the festival you not video or create copies of your performance. Some participants have gone as far as to destroy the work after its first run at the event.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Contemporary art that incorporates Super 8mm, 16mm, 35mm or altered light projections as part of a sculpture, installation, dance, or expanded cinema performance. Submissions including digital projections will not be considered (i.e. HDcam, DigiBETA, DVcam, DVD) all moving images should be from an analog source.

DEADLINE: October 31, 2013

NOTIFICATION: Nov. 15, 2013

ENTRY FEE: None. They believe that your time and effort are fee enough.
