The newest way isn’t always the best way. I love new fusion foods and the newest in scientifically gastronomic menus. But we still eat Jell-O at my house…with cocktail fruit. No kidding. I have cookbooks with wonderfully vivid pictures of savory Jello-O creations like salmon mousse terrine mold. Some ideas are worth preserving, although I cannot vouch for the salmon terrine. This Call is asking you to preserve a means and method that is a little less than current too. Interested in exploring this opportunity?

5th Annual International Juried Plastic Camera Show

This competition is open to artists working with plastic cameras with plastic lenses (click the link if you are looking to buy one). The more obsolete, flawed, and lo-tech, the better. Images should be taken with cameras with limited controls, such as Diana, Holga, Lubitel, Lomo, Banner, and Ansco cameras. Beautiful prints from less-than-gorgeous cameras – that’s what we’re looking for! This is RayKo’s largest exhibition of the year with artists from all over the globe submitting work, and hundreds of attendees at the reception.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: All work must be original & taken with a plastic camera & plastic lens.

JUROR: Ann Jastrab, MFA, is a fine art photographer, master printer, and teacher. She is currently the Gallery Director at RayKo Photo Center. The RayKo Gallery offers over 1600 square feet of exhibition space and presents eight to ten shows annually featuring nationally recognized artists. Ann regularly participates as a juror and reviewer for a multitude of organizations: the SF Arts Commission, Academy of Art in SF, Artspan, SF Art Institute, Fotofest, Photolucida, Review Santa Fe, Review LA, PhotoAlliance, SPE, Fotovision, Click646, and Critical Mass. She has also taught at the Maine Media Workshops since 1994.

My mother makes the ugliest chocolate chip cookies. They look like lumpy rocks, and as a teenager, I always longed for a mom that made Martha-Stewart-worthy sugar cookies decorated with colored sugar and dregees. But alas, I got a mom that makes ugly cookie that may taste better than anything I have ever put in my mouth! Home doesn’t always come in the pretty package you dream about, but it is still home. BTW, the secret to my mom’s cookies is semi-sweet mini chips and walnuts instead of pecans. This Call asks you to investigate what HOME means to you …good or bad.

JUROR: Krzysztof Candrowicz is a founder and the director of Lodz Art Center and Foundation of Visual Education in the city of Lodz, Poland. The foundation started the International Festival of Photography in 2001 and is now preparing the 11th annual celebration for 2012. As a director and chief curator of this event, Krzysztof established an association of 30 European festivals of photography, called PHOTO FESTIVAL UNION. The organization is responsible for common activities of European photo events, such as annual meetings, publications, photographic exchange and common promotion.

AWARDS: With selection for this exhibition, featured artist’s work will be seen by an international audience of collectors, curators, art consultants and other advocates of fine art photography. Each participant will be included in the Center’s Main Gallery exhibition and Online Gallery exhibition.

I am always amazed by how a simple ingredient can be transformed into a magnificent dish. Root vegetables are the perfect example. Who would of thought that something that spent most of the time it has existed under the ground could be transformed into something beautiful, warm and nutty? I think of a luscious crock of roasted carrot soup with a hint of ginger and nutmeg. This Call wants you to contemplate transformation. Give it a try…

JUROR: Meg Partridge is the Director of the Imogen Cunningham Trust, the organization established in 1975 to preserve and promote the work of Partridge’s grandmother. Partridge also administers her father’s photographic legacy, The Rondal Partridge Archives. Among her projects are a film profiling her godmother entitled Dorothea Lange: A Visual Life, and a documentary about her father called, Outta My Light: Photographer Rondal Partridge. Partridge has worked as an executive producer, producer, director and project manager for many companies. Raised in Berkeley, California, Partridge received a BA in Theater Arts and Arts Administration from Antioch College and an MA in Film from San Francisco State University.

When someone hums while eating, its a pretty good sign they like their food. I had never witnessed anyone hum and eat until my son was about 3 years old. Everytime he would sit down with his favorite foods, he would absent-mindedly start humming quietlyto himself. He was completely unaware. We still call it “dinner music” on the rare occasion we hear it. My husband and I never made any real effort to stop it (even in restaurants) because, well, let’s face it…food makes me sing too, if only in my heart. Flow Art Space in Minneapolis, Minnesota announces a call to artists for The Art of Music to be held in the gallery from February 15 – 25, 2012 to coincide with the 2012 Minnesota Music Educators Association Conference, which is attended by over 1,300 music educators and nearly 6,000 people in total. The gallery will promote the show, host an artist reception, and feature art on its Website.

ELIGIBILITY: US artists at least 18 are welcome to submit.

MEDIA: Any art forms that reference or depict music in some way, including instruments, sound art, paintings, drawings, sculpture, fiber, etc. All 2D and 3D art will be considered. Video artists must first contact the gallery.

I become periodically addicted to snack foods. Recently I’ve been fixated on Hot Buffalo Wing Pretzel Pieces from Snyder’s; however, an upcoming trip to a warm climate in the dead of winter means dragging out my bathing suit in December. Ugh. So, I am trying to break the addiction by trying out new snack foods. This week…whole grain fig newtons. Wow, that’s a punch of flavor in a tiny package. The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences encourages emerging artists & established artists to participate in the Small Works Exhibition. The purpose of the exhibition is to showcase small works that reflect personal vision.

The Pocono Arts Council announces a call to photographers for a national juried photography exhibition, January 14 – February 27, 2012 at ARTSPACE Gallery in Stroudsburg, PA.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. *Editor’s Note: The Prospectus calls this exhibit a “national” show indicating that artists must reside in the US; however, it doesn’t actually address eligibility. If in doubt, email them.

MEDIA: Open to all photo-based works which have been altered at any point during the photographic process. All content and photographic media are acceptable-alternative processes, traditional black and white, and/or digital methods. Add’l artistic mediums, such as paint or found objects, are encouraged as long as the piece is photographic based.

DEADLINE: November 23, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Entrants will be notified via email on or around December 9, 2011 only if he/she is accepted. A list of accepted artists will also be posted on their website.

JUROR: Harris Fogel is an Associate Professor of Photography, and Director and Curator of the Sol Mednick Gallery and Gallery 1401 in the Media Arts Dept. at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Fogel’s photographic work is in major museum collections, and he has a long exhibition record. He has written for art and photo-related publications and projects, and has taught photo history for more than 20 years. One of his longstanding interests is placing contemporary work within a contextual framework.

AWARDS: Juror’s Choice Award: $500 cash, a feature on the PoconoArts website, and an article in its monthly newsletter following the exhibition. Curator Award: $200 cash. ARTSPACE Student Award: $100 cash.

SALES: All work must be available for sale. The ARTSPACE Gallery receives a commission of 20% of sale before taxes. All payments to artists will be in the form of a check and mailed 30 days after the close of the show.
