CALL for ENTRIES: Figuratively Speaking

As I frequently shout from the mountain top, I love portraiture. I love faces, specifically. But when I began my Psychomachia project with Arizona artist Jerry Portelli, he challenged me to limit my use of faces and to concentrate on other figurative depictions. The process started on a sour note but has ended up pretty sweet…a lemon drop, if you will.

Maybe “Figuratively Speaking,” the National Call for Entries from the Emerging Young Artist (EYA) Organization and the Village Gallery in Montgomery, AL, will be your lemon drop, too. The entry fee is a reasonable $35, and the Best of Show winner will get a solo show at the Village Gallery. You know you want the show…so go for it.

National Juried Call for Entries: Figuratively Speaking

“Figuratively Speaking” is not limited to the traditional/contemporary aspects of the human forms, conditions, interactions, and abstractions of the human body. “Figuratively Speaking” includes figuration in contemporary design in terms of shapes, lines, and colors.

All artists over 18 years of age, residing in the United States are eligible. Work must have been completed within the last three years.

NO GICLEE COPIES OF ANY KIND. Works must be ready to hang.

They cannot accept free standing sculpture, installation, or video arts. Absolutely no substitutions of accepted works will be allowed. All accepted works must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibit.

AWARDS

Best of Show: $200 and A Solo show at Village Gallery (2 weeks duration). If selected artist is unable to participate in a solo show, he or she will be given $350 cash.

Merit awards (3): $50 and a Group show at Village Gallery (2 weeks duration). Is selected artists are unable to participate in a group show, they will be given $80 cash

JURORS

RICHARD MILLS is a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, and received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the University of Tennessee. Currently, he is Professor Emeritus of Art at Auburn University at Montgomery.

Richard Mills has had over 30 solo exhibitions including The Auburn University Gallery, Auburn, AL, The Ty Stokes Gallery, Atlanta, GA, and has exhibited in over 30 group and invitational shows including The Pirate, Denver, CO, State of Art- International Watercolor Biennial- East/West , Parkland College, Champaign, IL, and American Watercolor, The Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei, Republic of China.

Mills has had work accepted in over 90 national and regional juried exhibitions and has won over 30 awards including Watercolor U.S.A., Springfield, MO, The Red Clay Survey, Huntsville Museum of Art (AL), Taos National Exhibition of American Art, Taos, NM, The San Diego Watercolor Society, CA, The New England Watercolor Society, Boston, MA, and the National Watercolor Society, Brea, CA.

CHINTIA KIRANA was born in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1987. Chintia received her B.A. in painting from Auburn University of Montgomery in 2009. She was chosen to be the student Marshall, and Outstanding student from Liberal Arts Department. She currently represented by CAS Gallery in Montgomery, Alabama.

In 2009, she founded EYA (Emerging Young Artists) with the help of her co-founder Iman Serajj- Blanche. Currently, she is the gallery director/curator at Village Gallery in Montgomery, Alabama. Her works has been exhibited nationally and internationally. “To me art is a story, a memory, a passion, a love of creating something beautiful, and a mean to expresses my feelings.”

BARRETT BAILEY earned his MFA 2004 from the New York Academy of Art. Since then he has come back to his hometown of Montgomery, Alabama to use its residents as his subjects in his work.

He is a contemporary figurative artist trained in traditional academic methods. His portraits tell a story that can only be felt. Barrett teaches at surrounding schools and Museums throughout the year.

DANA BICE graduated from Auburn University at Montgomery in 1994, summa cum laude, with a B.A. in Fine Arts (Painting). In 1996, she earned her M.F.A. in Art History from Ohio University. She has also studied art history at The University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill.

For seven years, she has taught art history at A.U.M., and is currently its School of Liberal Arts’ Academic Advisor. Her juror experience includes art exhibitions sponsored by the Montgomery Art Guild, the Selma Art Guild, Montgomery’s Society of Arts and Crafts, and UNC-CH’s International Studies Center. She lives in Montgomery and creates paintings and assemblage art when she is not chasing after her five dogs.

SUZANNE JENSEN was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and raised in Indianapolis. Early on, her artistic talents were encouraged by her parents and teachers, who recognized her ability as a painter. As an undergraduate at Indiana State University, she began her first serious explorations in the visual arts working mostly in painting and drawing.

Then she discovered the ceramics studio. It was here that her skills and talents were most focused and challenged. In 1983, she graduated Indiana State with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with ceramics as her focus area. She went on the study ceramics at Tulane University, receiving her Master of Fine Arts in 1985.

She has been teaching in ceramics and sculpture at Auburn University Montgomery since 1987. Her works have been included in numerous national and regional exhibitions, and she has received many awards for her efforts. Ms. Jensen also has work on display in several galleries, most located in the South.

ENTRY PROCEDURE

Digital Files: must be JPEG’s submitted on a CD which can be read by a PC or a MAC. JPEG images should not exceed 1600 pixels in any direction and file size cannot exceed 1 MB.

Please label CD with your name and label each JPEG image as follows: LAST Name, FIRST Name, TITLE and NUMBER that corresponds with that image on the Entry Form. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the nullification of your entry.

FEATURED ARTIST: Peg Grady

INDULGENT WHIMSY

I find the sacred in everyday objects and appreciate the indulgence of artists that do. My house is filled with odd tidbits that have called out to me from here and there–things with which I cannot part for reasons unknown.

Peg Grady is a kindred spirit.

July marks the first month of the $2 Art Contest. The purpose of the contest was not to get rich, but to force myself to regularly review the work submitted to me by artists. Now you will get monthly Featured Artists, not quarterly or whenever the mood strikes me.

When choosing to force myself to be more diligent about posting Featured Artists, I neglected to account for how hard it would be for me to chose only one. I contemplated giving 2nd and 3rd place, but felt it somehow took away from the true winner–Peg Grady.

PEG GRADY

When I started investigating Peg Grady’s work, I was immediately drawn to her paintings and drawings that often take on the appearance of oil pastels and often incorporate a whimsy of color and typography. But once I found The Perfect Word Series, I was hooked. The work was, well, reverential…from a distance.

I noticed a statement on Grady’s site apart from her Artist Statement specifically for The Perfect Word: “An old thesaurus’s yellowed pages containing outdated phrases such as ‘apple pie order,’ ‘pretty kettle of fish’ and ‘tittle-tattle’ evoke a sense of history that delights me, sending me back to my elementary school classroom where the teacher told us of the value of Roget’s (not the dictionary style) thesaurus and how it branched off with differing shades of meaning, leading you to the perfect word.”

This led me back to the work, where I used the built-in magnifier to examine the details that tied it all together.

The simply whimsy in sacred found objects is all tied together in the simplicity of The Perfect Word.

Some of you may recall that I send out a questionnaire to all of my potential Featured Artists that asks a variety of questions from favorite foods to artistic influences, and I couldn’t wait to read Peg Grady’s answers to see if I really could have developed a picture of who she was based on this short series of work.

Artistic influences? Betye Saar, famous for her assemblage work, seems fitting. Robert Rauchenberg reinforced assemblage as Grady’s true love. Romare Bearden rounds it out.

Foods? Dark Chocolate and Almonds–indulgent. I would expect no less.

When asked if she liked to collaborate with others, she matter-of-factly explained that she doesn’t “play well with others. But I do run with scissors.” A woman after my own heart.

I have fallen in love with The Perfect Word series, and my heart is singing to hear that The Perfect Game series featuring a vintage book of solitaire layouts is in the works.

How did Peg Grady develop into the artist she is? Maybe it all ties back to her childhood…

“I was born in New York City where I appreciated the dinosaurs at the Museum of Natural History much more than the Monets at the Modern. Finally I got older and (hopefully) wiser, became a California girl and fell in love with art.”

Thank you, Peg Grady for the reverence with which you treat the written word and for creating work that makes us think. Thank you for artwork that both celebrates and believes in the ability of the child in all of us to remember the whimsy of our childhood with the sacredness it deserves.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Art Buzz!

Art Buzz Publishing, founded in 2007, offers an alternative to mainstream art publications and a way for lesser known and undiscovered visual artists to showcase their work to an international audience.

The annual Art Buzz fine art search seeks passionate emerging and mid-career visual artists throughout the world. Artists that are awarded with inclusion in the book, are chosen solely on the merits of their work—not their resume, background, biography, etc. Unlike many other publications, artists can not buy their way into this book.

Art Buzz, the book, is an annual, full-color, fine quality, large (10″ x 10″) format, hardcover “coffee table” publication that is scheduled for release in January of each year with a vigorous distribution plan targeted directly to the International Fine Art Community.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all visual artists – worldwide – 18 years of age or older. All the various mediums will be accepted such as: painting (oils & acrylics, etc.), drawing, graphic art, photography (includes digital), mixed media, fiber, print making, sculpture, glass, metal, pottery, jewelry, etc. If you wish to enter two different mediums (ex. oils and mixed media, or sculpture and jewelry, etc.), you are required to submit an entry form and fee for each particular medium you enter.

SUBMISSIONS: Artwork images may be submitted by 35mm slides (or 21/4” or 4″ x 5″ transparencies), digital files (preferred) or photographs up to 8″ x 10″. All artwork images should be clearly and neatly labeled with the artist’s name, title of work, medium and dimensions. The same information should also be listed clearly on the entry form.

SLIDES: Artist slides should be 35mm (or transparencies 21/4” or 4″ x 5″). All slides should be labeled with artist’s name, title of work, medium, dimensions and an arrow pointing to the slide top. Visit the full call for slide submission guidelines.

ENTRY FEE: The entry fee for up to three (3) slides (or transparencies), digital images or photographs is $35.00.

Are you surprised that I haven’t mention Art Publication in a couple of weeks? Me too. I think you all know my opinion, but since we have lots of new readers lately…I’ll restate it for the record. Opportunities for having your work published in art journals and magazines can only serve to help your career. Think of it as the cherry on the sundae!

Exposure in print can open doors for you in venues far from your back door. This Call for Entries from Cantaker Magazine is themed “The Ambiguous Object.” Art Publication and a theme…how will I ever contain my joy? Heheheh. Here’s the call:

Theme: The Ambiguous Object investigates questions of space, perception, projection, and meaning. The project will include work in all mediums that uses ambiguity to allow viewers both the literal and physical space to observe and imagine.

About the Jurors: Cook & Ruud is a think tank and production team comprised of Rachel Cook and Claire Ruud. We seek to investigate new models for the production and presentation of contemporary art. Drawing on traditional models such as the for-profit gallery, the nonprofit space and the artist-run cooperative, our goal is to develop new models for supporting art work amidst a shifting cultural and economic landscape.

Submission Guidelines:

Works can be executed in any media, traditional or digital/new media.
All works must be submitted digitally in high-resolution jpg files (300 dpi or larger).
Video work must be submitted for the jurying process as still images.
Work submitted may be in any size and will be appropriately scaled to fit the catalog.
Only recent or newly created work will be considered.
Submissions must be made online at HERE. Please note that submissions cannot be mailed.
Work submitted must be available for the group show.
All artists are welcome to submit except those who are members of the Cantanker staff.

Entry Requirements:

$10 for a single submission, $20 for 3 submissions.
There is no upper limit on submissions.

Submissions will be juried by C&R.

You know how I love a theme. I hear the snickers…I am proud to love a theme. I once had an art critic wonder aloud (in print anyway) if my love for a theme didn’t occasionally cloud my curatorial vision. Ouch, right?

SHIFT, A Call to Artists, Architects + Designers

The BECA Foundation is pleased to present SHIFT, an exhibition of new works of art + design featuring works that express, reveal, embody or address a change or movement on some level – be it social, cultural, physical, metaphysical, political, technological or any other relative shift.

For the purpose of this Call, submitting artists, architects and designers are encouraged to freely interpret the meaning of the word ‘shift’.

Those at least 18 years of age from any country are eligible to submit their works for consideration according to the guidelines below.

The BECA Foundation will host the exhibition at New Studio A.D., a new multi-functional studio, exhibition and event space located in downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The space allocated for the exhibition is 650 sqft (60 sq meters) with a ceiling height of 14 feet (4.3 meters) allowing the exhibition to fill a full 9,100 cubic feet (258 meters cubed) of viewing space.

Of the entries submitted, three individual artists, architects, designers, duos, groups or collectives will be selected by BECA Foundation directors + advisors to receive the exhibition opportunity which will run from September 1 – 14, 2010 with an opening reception from 6 – 8pm on September 3^rd, during Downtown Albuquerque’s First Friday ArtsCrawl.

This is a multimedia and multidisciplinary exhibition without limitation therefore all works will be considered, including but not limited to: site-specific installations, painting, sculpture, mixed-media, drawing, printmaking, fiber, textiles, illustration, digital art, interactive design, photography, video/new media, film, performance art, music and sound focused works, 3D animation, graphic design, product design, furniture design, haute couture fashion + accessories, architectural interventions/designs and functional art, etc. In other words, all creative culminations are welcome.

With a growing international BECA network of now 30,000, it is more important than ever for BECA to ensure that in addition to hosting the physical exhibition, the exhibition also be made available online at www.BECAICAD.org for those who are unable to attend in person.

BECA outreach efforts also extend beyond its own growing network via news releases, blogs, videos, flip publications and various forms of social media. This extended outreach for each exhibition results in the exposure of exhibiting artists, architects + designers work to over 750,000 members of the local, regional, national and international art + design communities.

CALL for ENTRIES: The Map as Art

In our mobile world, it seems that all of life revolves around fast food, GPS and mobile phones. Maps have become a rarely used–and lately a little understood–artform.

When I think of maps as an artform, I think of the fantastical maps of Canadian Artist Shane Watt. (Ironic considering the call is limited to US Artists). So, I was really excited to find this Call for Entries from Sebastopol Center for the Arts celebrating the Map as Art.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Mapworks

Sebastopol Center for the Arts invites artists living in the United States to submit work to Mapworks: the Map as Art. SCA is looking for art which references maps and mapmaking.

This may be done directly or indirectly, metaphorically, or conceptually. The terrain may be (but is not limited to) geographic, psychological, political, historical, cultural, mathematical, imaginary, or personal.

All media is acceptable, including installation. Video and film should be submitted as a DVD in loops no longer than 4 minutes; selected artists will need to supply their own equipment for display.

JUROR: Kim Anno is a painter, bookmaker, collaborator and Professor and Chair of Painting, at the California College of the Arts, San Francisco. Her advocacy of the arts has enjoined her talents as curator, artist-in-residence, juror, lecturer, and interviewer. In addition, her diverse practice has led her into important collaborations with writers, visual and performance artists.

DEADLINE: Hand-delivered entries will be accepted at SCA on Monday, August 30, between 3 and 6 pm. Entries by jpegs on CD must arrive by 5 pm, on or by that date. Please see prospectus for complete guidelines.

I never cease to be amazed at how often I trip across artist opportunities when on a completely different mission to find source or inspiration material for my own work. While searching for some reference material to shoot my last piece “Greed” for the series Pyschomachia that I’ve been working on with Arizona Artist Jerry Portelli, I tripped across this great call for the Seven Deadly Sins from Miami’s Bakehouse Art Complex.

Call for Entries: ¡Sin!

A national juried exhibition of original work inspired by a traditional concept of human transgressions. Lust, envy, gluttony, sloth, greed, wrath and pride have had an enormous impact on the moral compass of the modern world. With many different interpretations and understandings, each individual sin has been explored and exposed numerous times.

The Bakehouse Art Complex located in the Wynwood Arts District, Miami FL is announcing a Call to Artists for ¡SIN! to be on view during the world renowned art fair Art Basel Miami 2010.

In its 2,600 square foot gallery, the artists, chosen by a reputable panel of curators, will display their works that are directly related to one of the deadly sins.

Each of the seven sins is explored, from their origins and nature, their opposing virtue, and their corresponding punishment through a variety of media and styles from across the country.

Applicants will have the opportunity to present their work to a highly distinguished panel of jurors consisting of Museum and respected Art Professionals from Miami.

Each juror has chosen a specific sin, which they will individually curate. Jury panel is listed below. All Media Welcome.

We always want what we can’t have. I want to live on blue cheese, but my family has explain that it isn’t really an option. Printmakers want shows to enter…and it really should be an option.

As I have mentioned before, artists looking for printmakers’ call for entry make up a significant part of the readership of ArtAndArtDeadlines.com. They ARE hard to find–so when I run across any opportunity for printmakers, I like to pass it along. This is a great opportunity for Gallery Representation for a printmaker…and you don’t have to be local.

Washington Printmakers Gallery is a cooperative of active artists that allows printmakers to have gallery representation with the personal freedom to set your own prices and select the work you display. Membership Dues

There are a variety of membership levels available based on privileges and responsibilities within the collective. Monthly dues fees range from $50 to $190 per month. Full Membership artists are eligible for a solo show at WPG every 2 – 3 years. Other Membership levels include: Distant Associate, Emerging Printmaker, and Portfolio Member. How to Apply for Membership

Washington Printmakers Gallery is currently looking for artists interested in Full Membership. Local artists who are able to fully participate in gallery activities are particularly encouraged to apply.

I spend a lot of time answering artists’ excuses about why they don’t enter shows or put their work out there. I have heard them all, and some of them are legitimate.

With the accessibility of digital cameras, photography has taken a hard hit in the retail arena. Many consumers no longer see the value in purchasing photos that they believe they “can take themselves.” Please don’t write to me about all the things wrong with that argument…I get it.

As a result of that sentiment, many emerging photographers have to be very savvy with how and where they choose to submit work. The cost of entry fees, packaging, matting and framing add up fast. CALL FOR ENTRIES: Managed Landscapes

The touch of man on the natural landscape is all around us. From shimmering cityscapes and rural farms to strip mines and garbage dumps. Let’s see images that show the touch of man, light or heavy, on the earth around us.

Up to 44 photographs will be chosen by juror Thomas Bachand for exhibition at the Vermont Photo Space Gallery, on our website and in a
full color catalog available to the public for purchase.

JUROR: Thomas Bachand has been a professional photographer for over a decade, working in both traditional and digital mediums. His photography has appeared in magazines, advertisements, brochures, and textbooks – both in print and on the web. He writes on digital imaging issues for professional trade publications and lecturers on photography and technology issues.

Tom is the author of Lake Tahoe: A Fragile Beauty. In addition to private collections, his photography can be found in the Bancroft Library and the California Historical Society.

Thomas Bachand’s photography is a consideration of the land and the competing visions that inform our interaction with the world at large. Core to the work is its accessibility to the viewer. The use of color and a documentary style allow for an open and immediate connection to the subject.

By embracing a historical perspective, the photography captures a sense of honesty characteristic of the medium’s early pioneers. Whether creating a single, evocative image inviting reflection or a series conveying a sense of time and place, Bachand’s exploration includes the role of storyteller.

He seeks a convergence of the ordinary – extraordinary only in so much as it is revealing, offering both possibility and contemplation.

RULES FOR PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger. a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry. If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on VermontPhotoSpace.com or

2. Sent via email to submissions@VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI is only relevant for output purposes and does not effect the stored size of the image. It can be set to any number, but if you must specify something go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to three images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Additional images may be submitted for an additional $5 US per image.

DEADLINE: Images must be received by midnight EST on the submission closing date August 18, 2010 for the exhibition for which you are submitting. Payment must be received by the close of submissions August 18, 2010 for the exhibit for which you are submitting.

RIGHTS: Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition and for display on VPS website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

SALES: For submissions that are accepted, photographers may offer their work for sale and establish their own price for framed and unframed prints.

For Vermont Photo Space framed work we retain 66% of the sale price.

For works framed by the artist Vermont Photo Space retains 34%.

For unframed prints Vermont Photo Space retains 25% of the print sale price.

Local sales tax of 6% is collected on all sales at the gallery.

Vermont Photo Space Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.
