I am a product of a Southern upbringing and all the loveliness–and baggage–that goes with it. As a woman in the South, we are often expected to be in charge in the boardroom, have dinner on the table by 7…and do it all in heels and pearls.

Gender issues have been the subject of art for as long as art has been a subject. “Girl, Please!” is a Call for Entries from the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago and is a great exhibit opportunity to re-examine gender issues from a slightly different perspective.

Gender is a performance, an act that is perpetuated and maintained by societal norms and expectations, but how, and to what extent does it define us? “Girl, Please!” seeks to push and transcend the definition of gender while also exploring its relation to individual character amongst collective expectations. Bearing in mind Rupaul’s statement, drag in this case is not disco, but rather an illustration of feminity and masculinity in shades of grey.

Open to all genders! Artwork in all media may not exceed 72” horizontally, frame included. Please include an artist statement and a $30 entry fee.

Jurors: Kristen Carter and Emanuel Aguilar

Kristen Carter is WMG’s Gallery Coordinator. She is a graduate from DePaul University, and has a BA in History of Art and Architecture with a minor in Studio Art, in addition to studying Art History and Fine Art in Florence, Italy. Carter is a Ph.D candidate in Art History at the University of British Columbia as of September 2010. She is also a member of the Keeper Team for ArtSlant Chicago where she writes monthly reviews about art exhibitions in Chicago, and writes for the online art magazine, Jettison.

Emanuel Aguilar is assisting Woman Made Gallery with its exhibition programs. In addition he volunteers his marketing skills to the organization. He is a Fine Arts Major at Columbia College with concentration in Identity Politics and a Minor in Marketing, and he studied in Florence, Italy at the Lorenzo De Medici University. Aguilar works for Chicago’s Jean Albano Gallery and A & D Gallery. He has curated several exhibitions, and helped found the online arts magazine, Jettison.

PORTFOLIO REVIEW: A Call for Solo Show Proposals in San Francisco

I have been preaching about submitting your work for consideration for solo shows… and sometimes you guys make me look really good–like the prize winning pie at the county fair, in fact.

I posted a great call for Art Portfolio Reviews from Alphonse Berber Gallery in Berkley, California last week and clearly some of you must have listened because I just received another Call for Portfolios for Solo Shows from their San Francisco location known as Alphonse Berber Projects.

Located at 575 Sutter St, it is housed in a multi-level building dedicated to showcasing the most contemporary artworks. Alphonse Berber Projects presents single-artist exhibitions and features the widest possible range of mediums.

BOOK COVER ART: Call for Entries

Cover Art for The Unfastened Heart by Lane von Herzen

You are invited to participate in an open competition to provide the book cover art for the re-publication of Lane von Herzen‘s novel, The Unfastened Heart.

The winner of this competition will be awarded The Icon Prize, will receive $1500 in prize money, and will have his or her artwork appear on the book cover. The terms and conditions of this competition are as follows:

REFER TO NOVEL: Submit your original artwork created in response to Lane von Herzen’s novel, The Unfastened Heart. Each submission should include a brief statement about the section of the novel to which your art speaks.

MEDIA TYPE AND SIZE: You may enter for consideration paintings, photographs, graphic art, collage art, and other visual media by submitting a digital photograph (in JPG or JPEG format) of the work through the link at the bottom of this page. You should submit images saved with maximum quality compression with a long dimension of at least 1000 pixels at 72 or 300 dpi. Please keep the file size under 2 MB.

NUMBER OF ENTRIES: You may submit more than one entry. All submissions are subject to the format guidelines and limits set forth in this document.

QUALIFIED ENTRIES: No submissions will be considered if they are defamatory, abusive, obscene, profane or otherwise offensive or in poor taste. Anyone who participates in the competition in a disrespectful or unlawful manner, including making hostile or negative comments related to age, disability, race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity, will be disqualified. Posting of the work is at the discretion of the administrators.

PRIZE: The judging staff will select the winning submission. The winner will be awarded the 2010 Icon Prize and a cash award of $1500, and the winner’s submission will be used for the cover art for the re-publication of The Unfastened Heart.

AGREEMENT: By submitting your work to this competition, you are representing and agreeing as follows: (i) your submission is your own original artwork and, at the time of your submission, you have all ownership rights in the submission; (ii) you authorize us to publish your submission on the author’s blogsite and website without restriction or compensation; and (iii) if you are selected as the winner, you will accept The Icon Prize and the $1500 award in full compensation for all right, title and interest in any and all visual reproductions of your original work for all purposes related to the novel and The Icon Prize. The artist retains ownership of the original work, and is free to sell the original work as he/she wishes.

DEADLINE: Art will be accepted through December 31, 2010. Please note that the administrators encourage early entries, as another prize category may be added to reflect higher numbers of submissions.

NOTIFICATION: Finalists will be notified via e-mail by January 31, 2011. Following this date, fine arts finalists who have not incorporated graphic design into their work (a design including title and author of the book) may be paired with graphic designers in order to present the book covers in their print-ready format for the final round of judging. The administrators may elect to hold a series of gallery events to promote the finalists’ work prior to the judging of the winner, with the intent of bringing notice to the finalists as artists deserving of ongoing recognition of their artistic endeavors. The winner of The Icon Prize will be announced no earlier than June 1, 2011 and no later than December 31, 2011. The winning artist will be notified via e-mail.

Any questions or disputes related to the terms, conditions or participation in this competition shall be resolved by the author and publisher in their absolute discretion.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: All Hung Art Show

When I moved to the Great Smoky Mountains a few years ago, my family made a commitment to becoming more attuned to our surroundings and spending more time in the Great Outdoors. My family has tried gardening–no easy feat on the side of a mountain–as well as hiking, white water rafting and more. Why not bike riding? This Call for Entries is a great resume builder because it is a non-juried (all hung) show and promotes Bikes for the World too!

An Art Show Inspired by Bicycles

“Biketastic” is an art show for all mediums inspired by bicycles! This show is meant to feature art that represents the many nuances of bike culture; from bikes for commuting, racing and pleasure rides to those who ride them for economic, and environmental reasons.

The Soundry’s proximity to the Washington & Old Dominion Trail gives the area a lot of “bike traffic.” As a result, they see first hand what an important role biking plays in many people’s lives. Smartly enought…they have also noticed that bike enthusiasts like bike related art!

This show is open to all mediums and will bring with it many bike-centered events from organized “rides” to film screenings, and a fashion show. The opening of the arts show will benefit Bikes for the World!

Commit to Submit Form Here! “Biketastic” is unjuried. The submission fee is $20 and artists may submit up to 3 pieces. All work must be for sale and ready to hang or display.

Submissions are due by July 21, 2010.

The Gallery at the Soundry

The gallery at The Soundry occupies about one quarter of their total space. It’s a rough-around-the-edges kind of space with good lighting and comfortable seating.

They hang their member’s artwork in this area and offer it for sale. This is the place to go in Vienna, Virginia if you’re looking for work from emerging artists, or if you just want to kick back, sip a latte, and take in some new sights.

The artwork in the gallery changes regularly, and a large portion of their gallery space is set aside for installation works.

The garage atmosphere and undergound, working-studio feel give visitors an experience they’re guaranteed not to find anywhere in the region.

RETRO ART CONTEST: Spirograph

I love the sort of fun whimsy of the design of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. And as a parent, I love the variety of opportunities that were provided in that era to sneak the principles of design, color and competition into your children’s lives through play. Just add a Twinkie, and this next call for art entries from Sound Feelings Publishing would be a perfect combination or whimsy and design!

Can you Design Something better than this?

Sound Feelings Publishing is inviting submissions of beautiful designs to be Included in a Brand New Multi-Color Instruction Booklet for the Famous Spirograph Toy from the 1960s.

Using your 1967-1970 Kenner Spirograph toy (not Spirograph Plus or any other variant) and using a new Spirograph Multicolor Pen from Sound Feelings Publishing, create one or more BRAND NEW DESIGNS and submit them to Sound Feelings for their consideration to be included in their new, upcoming “Spirograph Multicolor Instruction Booklet.”

The winners will receive the prize money and will also have their names listed by their design (unless you prefer not to).

How Would These Designs be Different?

The original Spirograph incorporated pens that had four colors, black, blue, red and green.

Sound Feelings is seeking submissions of new designs that use the new Spirograph Multicolor Pen.

These new pens contain the original four colors: black, blue, red and green.

But the new pen ALSO includes fun and creative rainbow colors: yellow, light blue, pink, purple, brown, and orange — ten colors in one pen!

The Spirograph Multicolor Pen contains 10 ballpoint cartridges within one large barrel.

The ballpoint pen tips of the cartridges are the EXACT size of the original pen tips that came with your 1960s Spirograph. (Modern ballpoint pens have larger size tips that will not fit through the holes of the Spirograph gears.)

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: October 5, 2010

RULES:

1. Use a Spirograph multicolor pen (pictured right at $5.99) to a create brand new design on your Spirograph

2. Artwork created with gel tip, rollerball or felt tip pens will NOT be accepted.

3. Use high-quality paper so that the pen does not make any holes or rough spots. The paper color will usually be white, but if your design requires paper of a different color, then that will be completely acceptable.

4. Use one or more of the colors in the multicolor pen. (You may use as many colors as you want in your design, but generally, combining a few well-matched colors well will look better than using all ten colors!) Also, you may just want to use the original black, blue, red or green colors in your design and that would be completely fine.

5. Scan your completed design at 300 dpi or higher and save in .jpg format, at the highest quality. If you don’t have a scanner, you can mail the original to us and we will scan it and return your original to you.

6. Create instructions that follow the same format as the original instruction booklet so others may re-create your design. This includes displaying the ring number, the wheel number, the hole and the color of pen, and the reference starting point. Please see the sample of the original instruction booklet to guide you.

7. You agree that if you become one of their winners, you relinquish complete ownership and copyright of your design to Sound Feelings Publishing.

8. You may submit more than once.

9. Prizes will be based on existing submissions. If there are not enough contest art entries AND if the standards of the entries are not high enough then some of the prizes will not be awarded.

10. They will ONLY publish the winning entries. They will not publish your design unless they pay you for it!

11. Winners will be chosen within 60 days of the submission deadline and will be paid immediately thereafter.

ARTIST of the MONTH: Liquitex Acrylic Painters

I am not a painter (because I’m really bad at it), but I have a great love and appreciation for those that paint well–from representational to abstract. I do use Liquitex gel mediums though. Liquitex is Looking for Acrylic Painters

Liquitex Artist of the Month Program is aimed at providing valuable Internet exposure for artists working primarily in acrylic paint. Each month one artist will be selected and featured on the Liquitex web site and Liquitex Facebook page. The work will be selected by a jury from entries received up to the last day of that month. Those entries not selected will be considered during following months. Slides can not be returned as this is an ongoing program.

HOW TO ENTER:

1. There is no entry fee.

2. Fill out and sign the form found here. If submitting an electronic version of the form, typing your name in the signature field will represent your signature.

Only your City, State, Email and Web Site will be published.

3. Submissions must include a minimum of 4 and maximum of 6 images of recent work done primarily in acrylic, a short biography and an artists statement.

EMERGING ARTISTS: Ephemeral Call for Entries

ROY G BIV Gallery for Emerging Artists is currently looking for entries for Time-Sensitive, an exhibition held at The Ohio State University Urban Arts Space, located at 50 W Town Street, Columbus, OH 43215 from October 2010 – January 2011. Ola Ståhl will select the artwork. Group exhibitions may be submitted with a concept proposal for the space.

Time-Sensitive will feature artists who explore the idea of the ephermeral. Ephemeral artworks fade, disappear, or simply “end” due to the materials or time that they inhibit. The artworks in Time-Sensitive will explore the impermanent and the transitory, as well as disintegration and decay. These investigations will hopefully encourage momentary (yet lasting) impressions on the viewer.

About the Juror: Ola Ståhl is a writer, cultural theorist and sound & text based artist based in Malmö, Sweden. He received his BA with First Class Honours in The History of Art, Design and Film with Professional Writing from Sheffield Hallam University, and his MA with Distinction in The Social History of Art and PhD in Cultural Studies from the Department of Fine Art, Art History and Cultural Studies at The University of Leeds. He is a founding member of artist collective C.CRED with which he has participated in several international art exhibitions and festivals.

ENTRY PROCEDURE: They are accepting images of and/or proposals for single artworks, installations, and performances that deal with the idea of the ephemeral. For consideration, the artist must submit four to six jpeg images 1MB or larger in size that are labeled with last name and slide number (ex. smith01.jpg).

Each set of jpegs must be accompanied by an image list containing the following information for each submitted image: number, title of work, date of work, medium. The image list must be in .doc or PDF format labeled with last name (ex. smithimagelist.doc).

Artists may submit up to 2 videos. Videos must be submitted in Quicktime (.mov) format with 740 X 480 aspect ratio for widescreen or 640 X 480 for fullscreen. The first two minutes of each video will be reviewed. Videos should not exceed a playing time of 10 minutes per video.

Submissions must include an artist statement and a resume in PDF or .doc format, labeled with last name (ex. smithstatement.doc). Artworks incorporating 2-D and 3-D elements must be made of ephemeral material. Such material is impermanent, non-archival, and/or constantly changing in time.

Due to health concerns, artworks comprised of materials that attract insects and vermin cannot be exhibited. Materials must not be hazardous for indoor display, as all artworks will be displayed within the Urban Arts Space Lower Gallery.

Due to the nature of ephemeral materials, artworks in the exhibition will not be insured by The Ohio State University Urban Arts Space.

THE JOY OF DISCOVERY

One of the joys posting for ArtAndArtDeadlines.com is opening my email and receiving Calls that you just know will be the golden egg in some artist’s Easter egg hunt.

I love being a part of new beginnings–both for artists and for galleries. My experience is that gallery directors are (at least at the beginning of a project) hopeful–even expectant–of what is to come.

My experience is also that artists spend a lot of time (at least in the beginning) hopeful–even expectant–that a gallery director is going to fall in love with their work.

Bond Street Studio is back and is looking for new talent. Expanding their horizons from a contemporary photography gallery, they now accepting submissions for all types of fine art work.

From painting to film, send them your best work for a chance to be in their grand re-opening group show in August 2010!

They are changing things up!

Now operating as a non-traditional gallery space, they are able to have much more freedom when creating shows.

This means your work that doesn’t fit anywhere else might be perfect for Bond Street Studio! (Every non-traditional artist’s dream)

GUIDELINES:

1. Please send up to 5 JPG’s 700 pixels on the long side (please make sure they are in sRGB format) to gallery@bondstreetstudio.com .

2. It is also helpful to include a brief bio and project description.

FEES:

1. It is FREE to submit!

2. But, if you are selected there is a $25 hanging and processing fee.

DEADLINE: July 18, 2010

They are also planning on joining the blogosphere soon showcasing artists, so even if you don’t make it to the group show you may still be featured with on their blog!

I know that many of you out there will go to their site and be suspicious that you can’t find the any more than the information in this call or any information regarding their changing status.
