What is the $2 Art Contest?

First…Please know that I am not a big fan of online exhibits. I enter one occasionally, but usually they just seem like scams to get my entry fee. Now, how is it that I am supposed to not be a “starving artist” when I am throwing $35 after $50 toward meaningless shows with no history, no academic recognition, and no shot of selling my work?

Show me tangible benefits please.

Second…ArtAndArtDeadlines.com has always been intended to be a FREE resource, and that isn’t changing. But, I made the decision to remove Google Ads from this site by our one-year anniversary (September 2010) and replace them with well-placed, aesthetically pleasing, non-flash ads for artists and art resources that my readers will find helpful and valuable to them.

Yes…I’m coming to the point…

Third…I receive a good number of submissions to be a FEATURED ARTIST on ArtAndArtDeadlines.com, and I usually write a feature post every couple of months. Take a look at our Recently Featured Artists Catherine Roach, Celine Eimann, Shane Watt, and Kris Wlodarski. These posts do really well for MONTHS after they are posted because people want to see good art.

Times Square is one of the world’s most renowned urban destinations. Its dazzling lights and teeming crowds offer an overwhelming sense of possibility. Having helped to make Times Square clean and safe, the Times Square Alliance is now working to nurture the creativity, energy and edge that are the essence of Times Square.

For that reason, they are working with a variety of arts-based curatorial groups to bring public art projects to Times Square. Times Square Arts, their pilot public art program, will incorporate diverse art elements into Times Square’s streetscape, thereby expressing the area’s uniqueness and enriching the pedestrian experience.

The Times Square Alliance seeks letters of interest from arts organizations and artists across disciplines to present contemporary art projects and art events in the public spaces in and around Times Square.

In a one-page letter, applicants should propose a single project or series for anytime between September 2010 and December 2012.

Artists and arts organizations are encouraged to propose projects that address the unique nature and rich history of Times Square. Projects should be able to have an impact in a space defined by dynamic activity and continuous, competing visual stimuli.

Organizations, curators and artists are encouraged to consider how their projects will change or effect the space during the presentation and how the 350,000 people here every day (as well millions of virtual viewers) will interact with the presentation.

Public spaces to consider as locations for art projects and events include the new Broadway plazas and Duffy Square in Times Square and other public and private spaces throughout the Theater District, 42nd Street and 8th Avenue.

Through its Public Art Program, the Times Square Alliance brings temporary high-quality, cutting-edge art and performance to Times Square’s public spaces, so that it is known globally as a place where ordinary people encounter authentic, ever-changing urban art in multiple forms and media.

ARTIST OPPORTUNITY: State Fairs 2010

State Fairs are known for funnel cakes and corn dogs; however, they can also be a Great Art Opportunity for self-taught and beginning artists to get their feet wet in a friendly, albeit competitive, arena. But professionals and seasoned artists shouldn’t overlook the opportunity to win cash prizes and sell work at their local State Fair.

This is the 2010 State Fair update.

By the way, if you are new to the state fair scene, you should look for keywords like “exhibits,” “competitions” and “premiums” or “premium book” on the fair websites.

Here are the 50 State Fairs in alphabetical order by state–yes, all 50 of them are here.

Don’t forget to have fried Twinkie for me!

1. The Greater Gulf State Fair (Alabama) is typically held in late October. The competitive exhibits include everything from digital photography to duct tape art.

2. Alaska State Fair home of record-setting giant vegetables and beautiful flower gardens–and art, of course. Artwork will be judged on design, composition, originality, creativity color saturation, lighting, contrast emotional response, technical expertise and craftsmanship. Entries in the Professional Division are also judged on presentation. Don’t forget to enter the bee keeping contest too!

3. Arizona State Fair reflects the rich history of Arizona and spans three centuries as a showcase for statewide talent. ASF also hosts a popular All Indian Rodeo. Of course, no fair would be complete without art. All traditional media and some mixed media are allowed with the exception of computer generated art, photographic prints, copies and color copies. Click here beginning in July of each year for competitive exhibits info.

4. Arkansas State Fair is also an October affair. If you aren’t prepared to compete to be the Rodeo Queen, make sure you enter one of this fair’s photography contests.

5. California State Fair hosts unique and world-renowned competitions showcasing a variety of industries, including those that extend far beyond agriculture. Thousands of awards are bestowed annually in categories such as fine arts, culinary, youth, technology and more.

6. Colorado State Fair provides an unmatched opportunity for both Emerging Artists/Students and Professional Artists from mission of “Quality, Quantity & Diversity.” Click Here for more information about fine arts competition.

7. Connecticut does not have a “State” Fair; however, Connecticut artists are even luckier…they have over 40 local fairs from which to choose. Check out this map of Connecticut fairs to find the one closest to you!

8. Delaware State Fair has hosted a wide variety of exhibits and contests. You’ll find categories from Abstract Art to Zinnias and everything in between represented at the Delaware State Fair. Held in July, entry into the Fine Arts Competition is only open to amateurs (defined as someone who does not derive an income from or teach the media of the category entered).

9. Florida State Fair is held in February, and residents can compete in more than two dozen categories including fine art, photography, sewing and needlework, various artisan crafts, including woodcarving, and horticulture. There’s even a wine-making competition and a high school art exhibition and competition. Find a category and enter today for your chance to win an award or gain a few fans…and don’t forget the fair food!

10. Georgia National Fair is held in October each year and has a full program of both Home Arts and Fine Arts Competition and even Artists in Residence. You can download the Premium Book and browse all of their competition information on their website GeorgiaNationalFair.com.

11. Hawaii State Fair was officially 50 years old as of 2009; but, information about art is missing from their website. It is in May each year…so we have almost a year to figure it out again. Someone please Email me if you have any information.

12. Western Idaho Fair walk began with agricultural exhibits. Now you can walk through the exhibit halls to see the most creative things, from fine arts to blown glass, fancy wine to fine embroidery. Learn how you can enter.

13. Illinois State Fair offers competitive exhibits in Painting, Watercolor, Drawing and Graphics, Ceramics, Textiles, Enamels, Glass, Wood, Photography and even Digital Imagery (which they define as photography or drawings that have been manipulated by use of a computer program). 14. Indiana State Fair is held in early August and offers competitive exhibits in a full gamut of fine art from painting to fiber art and computer generated work. The fine arts department seeks to recognize sincerity, honesty, quality and originality.

15. Iowa State Fair accepts art entries from artists 3 years and older. The fine arts competition accepts work in a range of media including a themed photography exhibit. Cash awards range from $50 Honorable Mentions to $500 Best of Show. Unlike many fairs where you have to bring your work for the jury process, starting in 2010, the Iowa State Fair will be jurying from .jpgs.

16. Kansas State Fair art competition has both an amateur and professional division, and the duct tape competition is open to everyone…so no excuses! Accepted media for professional fine arts include: paintings and drawings, hand-pulled prints, photography, sculpture and plein aire. Check the site often for updates.

17. Kentucky State Fair offers competition for everyone, and with thousands of competitive entry categories in everything from homemade pies to ugly lamps, and of course fine art. Visitors are sure to find a category that fits their talent–from goats to gauche.

18. Louisiana State Fair offers categories in standard painting, drawing and photography for the adult classes and cool youth division categories including footwear and recycled art. Check out all of the competitive exhibits!

19. Bangor State Fair (Maine) only offers a photography contest for amateurs; however, an amateur is defined as one who earns less than half his/her income as a photographer. That includes a large number of you out there. This fair boasts record-breaking crowds due to the pay one price ticketing in 2009.

20. Maryland State Fair offers opportunities for people of all ages to enter their most prized items, whatever they may be. This year offers a fresh crop of categories including cartoon art, miniatures, and state-themed photography. Follow the Maryland State Fair on Twitter for the latest updates!

21. The Big E (Eastern States Exposition) is held in West Springfield and functions as Massachusetts’ State Fair. The Big E offers a variety of department competitions including several fiber arts categories, photography and the 2009 addition of of the Trashionista Recycled Fashion competition.

22. Michigan State Fair The nations oldest state fair and one of Michigan’s most treasured traditions is in danger of being “blown away”. Established in 1849, the Michigan State Fair was over 160 years old when an ill considered decision was made to stop holding the annual state fair. 23. Minnesota State Fair presents an annual art exhibition that is the result of a juried competition. Participation is open to all living residents of Minnesota, and each may submit one work for consideration. Only those works selected by the jurors are displayed in the Fine Arts Center during the State Fair. In 2008, a total of 2,400 pieces were submitted, and 385 works were accepted.

24. Mississippi State Fair offers a fine art and student art competition during this October Fair; however, the details are sketchy. Mississippi artists, email me the details, and I’ll update the post!

25. Missouri State Fair accepts works in all media for fine arts competition in both adult and junior categories. China painters and photographers have separate opportunities in addition to the Missouri Top 50.

26. Montana State Fair. Masters, amateurs and youth are invited to exhibit their creations. The Creative Arts Department features a variety of craft related skills. Artistic folks can exhibit paintings, bronzes and more in Fine Arts. Hand weaving and Spinning features woven products. There is a photography exhibit for the camera buffs.

27. Nebraska State Fair offers a fine arts competition for painting, drawing, clay, glass and more…even comic book art. Monetary awards were small in 2009; however, special awards like $100 Cheap Joe’s gift certificates sweetened the pot. 28. Nevada State Fair is open to amateurs and professionals with categories including acrylics, oils, watercolors, pastels, charcoal, china painting and stained glass. A Profession is limited to 4 entries and is defined as any person who sells the work from the event in which they are participating, teaches others for profit or who makes up 50% or more of their yearly income from art sales. 29. New Hampshire does not have a “State Fair,” per se; however, the state is alive with fairs throughout the year. Find a full list of NH fairs here. The Sandwich Fair, held in October, offers competitive exhibits in the categories of Painting, Drawing, Print & Mixed Media, and Sculpture–as well as Landscape, Still Life and Portraits in any media.

30. New Jersey State Fair offers competition in the categories of Oils, Acrylics, Pastels, Graphics, Watercolor, Sculpture and Photography. If none of those suit your fancy, don’t forget the Polka Dancing Competition!

31. New Mexico State Fair is also known as Expo New Mexico. Do you whip up a mean Spam casserole? Zealous about your zucchini? Proud of your petunias? Do you create art that is simply alluring? Why not be a part of the competition at the New Mexico State Fair? With several departments and categories in which to compete, there’s something for everyone.

32. The Great New York State Fair is an exciting mix of big-name entertainment, mouth-watering food, captivating exhibits and thrilling attractions that draws nearly 1 million people every summer. It is your invitation to a 12-day celebration of the very best in New York State agriculture, commerce, education, art and music.

33. North Carolina State Fair offers the standard art exhibits in addition to the Web & Graphic Design Competition. Now in its 16th year, the Design Contest challenges Internet-savvy artists to use the N.C. State Fair as the subject of graphic and Web page designs.

34. North Dakota State Fair has a full range of competition in Fine Arts from painting and sculpture to taxidermy. This fair is held in July, so bookmark the competition link for next year!

35. Ohio State Fair proudly states it’s mission is “to attract a variety of Ohio artists providing the opportunity to exhibit and receive awards and recognition, encourage innovation in the arts and expose the community to one of Ohio’s greatest assets, its artists.” And, they put their money where their mouths are… Amateur Best of Show wins $1,000 while Professional Best of Show wins $2,000. In addition, OSF has a Patron Purchase Award Program which is designed to provide new and established collectors of Ohio artworks a unique opportunity to add to their collections.

36. Oklahoma State Fair is held in September. Every year, the Creative Arts Program showcases the talents of Oklahomans in most media. The “other” category leaves it wide open for all of you with a weird streak, and photographers have their own competition broken down by subject matter: nature, action, scenic, flower, geometric or abstract patterns, portraits, people, computer generated graphics, pets, computer enhanced photo, twilight/night photos, landscape, and the Oklahoma State Fair Theme.

37. Oregon State Fair features the All-Oregon Art Annual categories include Professional Art, Amateur Art, Student and Youth Art, Juried, Non-Juried and Student Calligraphy. Deadlines are in June of each year. For more information or questions please email or call (503) 947-3260.

38. Pennsylvania is another of those states that doesn’t have a “State” fair; however, the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs boasts more than 100 members. Here is a list of Pennsylvania fairs in alphabetical order. If you have been to a Pennsylvania fair with a thriving arts competition, email me so I can update this post. And, if you are the first one to send me a picture of your artwork that you entered into the county fair, I will replace the question mark with your work if it is spectacular.

39. The Washington County Fair (Rhode Island) is the largest fair in Rhode Island and features competitive opportunities in ceramics, photography, and painting. Visit the Washington County Fair competition page for a full list of categories…and please don’t forget to eat a candied apple (or two) and some cotton candy for me.

40. South Carolina State Fair is typically held in October of each year. The SC State Fair supports the arts with higher dollar prize amounts unlike almost any other fair in the country except for Ohio. The SC State Fair also has a Patron Purchase Program which allows collectors and fair sponsors the opportunity to purchase work. I have both entered the SC State Fair and won a prize or two at this the fair…sign up for the newsletter today.

41. South Dakota State Fair sponsors competition and pays premiums for drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, china painting, mixed media and graphic arts. I know the arts exist at the SD State Fair because I found the 2008 results on-line; however, I cannot find the premium book for art this year. This fair website is difficult to figure out for art entry purposes. Save this SDSF link for later and let me know if you find more direct information by emailing me!

42. Tennessee Valley Fair is the fair of my home state and is being held now (September). This state fair has the quaint feeling of a county fair but stretches out farther than the eye would lead you to believe. The arts competition doesn’t pay high premiums but does cover a variety of media including: Oil or acrylic, Watercolor, Pastel, or colored pencils, Graphic prints, line drawings, silk screen, etchings, engravings, pen and ink with color, Mixed Media, Sculpture (not to exceed 8″ in any direction), Computer Generated Art, Cartoons, Miniatures (oil, watercolor, pastel or graphic), Glass, Ceramics, Pottery, Photography and more. 43. The State Fair of Texas is held in October of each year to beat the Texas heat. The Art Department is open to amateurs only, and all art must have been completed within the year prior to entry. Works from teachers and professional artists are acceptable if they do not earn $2,000 of their income from the sale of their art. The same restriction applies to photography.

44. The Utah State Fair is also ongoing (September). You can register to received email newsletters regarding next year’s fair at the top right of any page on their website. The US Fair offers competitive opportunities in Fine Arts and Photography for both professionals and amateurs with cash awards ranging from $30 to $225.

45. Vermont State Fair offers exhibit opportunities in Art and Photography. However, all information I can find indicates that Art is limited to paintings. So, if you are not a painter or photographer, groom your goat or shine your tractor for exhibit. Check the VSF Exhibit page for all the possibilities.

46. The State Fair of Virginia offers the best of Virginia! Go see Virginia’s finest animals and agriculture, exhibits and shows, toe-tappin’ music,
fine arts and crafts, blue ribbon competitions and more–an annual traditions since 1854. Visit the website for information on the NEW LOCATION! Check the competitor’s page for categories.

47. Evergreen State Fair (Washington) features competition in Fine Arts and Photography featuring special categories for less-common fair departments like textiles and found-object assemblage. Yeah!

48. West Virginia State Fair was reported by me last year as not having Fine Arts competition. I don’t know if I just missed it last year, but this year when searching for updates, I found the Fine Arts category nestled inside the Home Arts category. Take a look!

49. Wisconsin State Fair offers competition in textiles (quilts and clothing) as well as photography, but only for amateurs. Premiums are small, but these opportunities are often about keeping you motivated & showing…and don’t forget the cheese!

50. Wyoming State Fair offers competition opportunities in the media of painting, drawing, mixed media and photography, and competition is open to Wyoming, Western Nebraska and Western South Dakota residents for these categories. How unusual! Don’t forget to enter the “Best Beef Picture” Contest.

ARTIST RESOURCE: Grants in 50 States

I get more inquiries than I can count about artists’ grants.

As you might imagine, grants for artists are not plentiful. However, I find that many artists that don’t live within 20 miles of a state’s capitol overlook one of their best chances–their state Arts Organization.

Here is a collection of Arts Organizations across the United States that give artist grants and links to their sites.

Alabama State Arts Council – The Alabama State Arts Council awards Artist Fellowships of $5,000 for Alabama artists working in crafts, dance, design, media/photography, music, literature, theater and the visual arts. Recipients may use funds to set aside time to create art, improve their skills, or to do what is most advantageous to enhance their artistic careers. Recipients must be residents of Alabama.

Arizona Commission on the Arts – The Arizona Commission on the Arts “Artist Projects” is a programs to support individual artists in all disciplines for project-related costs that allow the artist(s)increased time to research and develop ideas or new works.

California – San Francisco Arts Commission – The San Francisco Arts Commision awards “Individual Artist Commission” Grants of up to $10,000 to individual artists working and living in San Francisco to stimulate the creation and presentation of works of art through out the city.

California – Arts Council Silicon Valley – Up to six fellowships will be given annually to artists living in the Silicon Valley in rotating artistic categories.

California – LEF Foundation – LEF operates within two regional areas: California and New England. Thje LEF California office funds in specific areas of architecture, the environment, and social justice. Grants are made to projects which includean artistic and cultural overlay, and are primarily focused on three geographic areas: California, Hawaii and New Mexico.

Colorado Council on the Arts – Colorado Council on the Arts Artist Fellowships acknowledge artistic integrity and quality among Colorado’s artists and promote public awareness of their work. Artist Fellowship Awards are $2,000 to $18,000.

Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism – Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism Artist Fellowship program is designed to encourage the continuing artistic development of Connecticut’s finest creative artists who are seriously committed to their art form and who have a demonstrated history of professional activity in the state. Twenty to thirty-five awards are made each year in the amounts of $5,000 and $2,500. Visual artists are eligible for this program during odd numbered years.

Delaware Division of the Arts – The Delaware Division of the Arts Individual Artist Fellowships are awarded to applicants residing in Delaware for at least one year and at least 18 years of age.

The District of Columbia Comission on Arts and Humanities – The Arts Commission offers funding for the arts in the District of Columbia. The Artist Fellowship Program offers grants to individuals in a broad range of artistic endeavors. Individual fellowships support individual artists who make significant contributions to the arts and who promote the arts in the District of Columbia through artistic excellence. Fellowship artist disciplines rotate on a biannual basis. In 2011, fellowships will be awarded in Media, Visual Arts, and Crafts.

Florida Division of Cultural Affairs – Division of Cultural Affairs for the state of Florida awards grants to individual artists.

Idaho Commission on the Arts – Idaho Commission on the Arts offers grants to individuals.

Illinois Arts Council – The Illinois Arts Council awards grants to individuals for up to $7000

Indiana Arts Commission – Indiana Arts Commission Grants support individual Indiana artists, in all disciplines, for specific project-related costs. Eligible projects are purposely left flexible to respond to the artists’ ideas, dreams, and needs, however, the goal of this program is to aid the artists’ career development.

Iowa Arts Council – Iowa Arts Council provides Major Grants(up to $10,000) and Mini Grants (up to $1,500) to individual artists working in all disciplines, to develop significant and specific projects that will be presented to or shared with the public during or after the grant period. Applicants may request up to $15,000 which must be matched dollar-for-dollar.

Kentucky Arts Council – Kentucky Arts Council offers Individual Artist Professional Development Grants, Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants, and The Al Smith Individual Artist Fellowship Awards.

Arts Kentucky – Arts Kentucky is a statewide membership organization for individual artists, performers, craftspeople, community and arts groups. Providing professional development opportunities, access to resources, consulting services and inclusion in a powerful arts network for people who are working to improve their communities through the arts.

Louisiana Division of the Arts – Louisiana Division of the Arts awards fellowships to individual artists.

Maine Arts Commission – The Maine Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowships are awarded annually, one in each catagory: Visual Arts, Performing arts, and Literary Arts.

Maryland State Arts Council – Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Awards are grants awarded to Maryland artists through an anonymous, competitive prices to encourage and sustain their pursuit of artistic excellence. A limited number of awards of $1,000, $3,000 and $6,000 are offered each year. Different categories of the Visual Arts are awarded in alternate years.

Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowships – The Artist Grants Program provides direct assistance to Massachusetts artists, to recognize exceptional work and to support the further developments of their talents. Fellowship grants of $5,000 are offered in discipline categories which rotate according to fiscal year.

Art Serve Michigan – Art Serve Michigan is not giving out grants at this time, but has a list of other grant opportunities on this webpage.

Minnesota – Five Wings Art Council – The Five Wings Art Council is one of eleven designated Regional Arts Councils in Minnesota who provide grants and services to nonprofit arts organizations and individual artists on a regional basis. The Individual Artist Grants (up to $1,000) are designed to help strengthen an artist’s career by taking advantage of arts related, short term opportunities.

Minnesota – Jerome Foundation – The Jerome Foundation makes grants to support the creation and production of new artistic works by emerging artists, and contributes to the professional advancement of those artists. Open to residents of Minnesota and New York City. Individual grants are available in the visual arts, theater, literature, etc..

Minnesota State Arts Board – The Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grants are a pilot programs that supports and assists artists at various stages of their careers. Grants will be awarded for career building and for the creative development of artists. Some artists may choose to request funds to create new work, but it isn’t a requirement of the program.Grants range from $2,000-$6,000.

Mississippi Arts Commission – The Mississippi Arts Commission Artist Fellowship program is focused on honoring mississippi artists who demonstrate the abilty to create exemplary work in their chosen field The agency awards fellowships up to $5,000 in several catagories each year.

Montana Arts Council – Montana Arts Council offers an Artist’s Innovations Award to honor the innovative ideas, practices and the contributions of Montana artists

Nebraska Arts Council – Nebraska Arts Council offers Artist Fellowships which provide monetary awards to Nebraska artists in various disciplines.

Nevada Arts Council – Nevada Arts Council (NAC) awards Fellowships ($5,000) and “Jackpot” Grants to individual artists in literary, performing and visual arts.

New Hampshire State Council on the Art – New Hampshire State Council on the Arts’ Artist Services Programs offer the following grants to individuals: Individual Artist Fellowships, Artist Entrepreneurial Grants, Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants, and Percent for Art Purchases/Commissions Grants which fund purchases or commissions of art and craft work for state buildings.

New York – Jerome Foundation – The Jerome Foundation makes grants to support the creation and production of new artistic works by emerging artists, and contributes to the professional advancement of those artists. Open to residents of Minnesota and New York City. Individual grants are available in Media Arts, and for travel or study.

New York – Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council – Individual Artist Grants are available to individual artists residing in Warren or Washington County. One grant of $2500 is available for artists who reside in Washington County, and a grant of $2500 and another for $1000 are available to artists who reside in Warren County. These proposals must be for the creation of new art that will impact the community creatively or involve the community in the creative process.

New York Foundation for the Arts – New York Foundation for the Arts Artists’ Fellowships awards grants of $7,000 in sixteen separate disciplines to individual originating artists in New York State. Through Artists & Audiences Exchange, each fellowship recipient performs a public service activity in collaboration with a non-profit organization located in New York State. The Foundation also offers Career Advancement Mini-Grants($100-$600).

North Dakota Council on the Arts – North Dakota Council on the Arts awards Individual Artists Fellowships in the amount of $2,500. In 2003, artists working in the visual arts/crafts and media arts will be eligible for grants.

Ohio Arts Council – The Ohio Arts Council offers several programs for individual artists.

Oregon Arts Commission – Oregon Arts Commission, due to the current state budget crisis, has temporarily suspended awarding the Individual Artist Fellowship Grant. This program may be resumed after the January 2003 election, pending approval by the voters of the State Income Tax Surcharge.

Pennsylvania Council on the Arts – Pennsylvania Council on the Arts offers funding opportunities and services for Pennsylvania artists. Opportunities include individual fellowships up to $10,000 and an annual catalogue of Fellowship Recipients.

Pennsylvania – Leeway Foundation – The Leeway Foundation was established to promote the welfare of women and benefit the arts. Awards to individual women artists are offered in a selected visual or literary discipline each year. Specific grants are available for emerging and established women artists. There is also a Window of Opportunity Grant which help artists take advantage of unique, time-limited opportunities that could significantly benefit their work or increase its recognition.

Pennsylvania – Pew Fellowships in the Arts – Pew Fellowships in the Arts awards grants of $50,000 to artists working in a wide variety of performing, visual, and literary disciplines which rotate on a four-year cycle. The primary function of the fellowships is to free artists from other activities-literally to “buy time”-so they can focus on creative development for an extended period. Up to twelve fellowships are awarded annually to artists living and working in the five-county Philadelphia area.

Rhode Island State Council on the Arts – Rhode Island State Council on the Arts makes direct grants to Rhode Island artists. Grants to individuals include Fellowships and Folk Arts apprenticeships. Proposals for funding for individual artists are also considered.

South Carolina Arts Commission – South Carolina Arts Commission Fellowships recognize and award the artistic achievements of South Carolina’s exceptional individual artists. Six fellowships are awarded each year on a rotation by arts discipline. Fellowship awards are made through a highly competitive process and are based on only one criterion: artistic excellence.

South Dakota Arts Council – South Dakota Arts Council awards several different kinds of grants to individual artists. These are: Artist Grants, Artist Collaboration Grants, and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants.

Tennessee Arts Commission – The Tennessee Arts Commission offers Individual Artist Fellowships and Professional Artist Support grants.

Texas Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County – The Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County offers fellowships that are cash awards of $2,500 and $5,000 for artists who have resided in Houston for at least two full years prior to the application deadline.

Utah Arts Council – Individual Artist Grants (for Utah residents only) for up to $1,200 are available two times annually with deadlines on the 1st day of June and October. For a hard copy, please contact Tay Haines, thaines@arts.state.ut.us, (801) 236-7549.

Vermont Arts Council – The Vermont Arts Council awards Creation Project grants ($3,000), Artist Development grants($250-$1000) to individual artists, Arts Endowment Fund ($1,000-$10,000) for Vermont artists and Vermont Arts Organizations for creation, production of new work and technical assistance.

Virginia Commission on the Arts – Through the Virginia Commission on the Arts a limited number of fellowships with awards of $5,000 are available to professional creative artists living in Virginia. Specific arts disciplines will be eligible for support each year on a rotating basis, depending on the amount of state and federal funding available to the Commission.

Washington Artist Trust – Artist Trust is a not-for-profit organization dedicated exclusively to supporting Washington State artists working in all creative disciplines. Grants awarded to individual artists are Grants for Artist Projects which awards up to $1,500 to artists to begin, further or complete specific works of art, and Fellowships, which are unrestricted awards of $6,500 to recognize artistic merit and continued dedication to art-making.

West Virginia Commission on the Arts – West Virginia Commission on the Arts annually awards fellowships in various categories of the visual, literary, and performing arts based on the originality, creativity, and accomplishment of previous work, as well as the level of commitment and potential for further growth. Fellowship awards are for $3500. The Commission also awards Professional Development grants to individual artists.

Wisconsin Arts Board – Wisconsin Arts Board’s Artist Fellowship Awards recognize the significant contributions of professional artists in Wisconsin. Fellowships of $8,000 are available, in odd-numbered years, to individual artists working in the Visual Arts and Media Arts.

Wyoming Arts Council – The Wyoming Arts Council awards The Individual Artist Fellowship. This is a competative program and applicants are judged on the merit of their work. The awards are given to recognize outstanding work that is already compeleted.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Strange Figurations

I love figurative work. My own work is almost exclusively figurative. Most of my favorite artists are figurative.

Here’s a great figurative show: Strange Figurations at the Limner Gallery in Hudson, NY brought to you by SlowArt Productions.

SlowArt Productions presents the group thematic exhibition, Strange Figurations. The exhibition will be held at the Limner Gallery from September 1 – 25, 2010. This exhibition is open to all interpretations of the concept, Strange Figurations. Included are all forms of unique and unusual figurative art from the realist to the surreal and visionary. All artist interpretations of the theme “Strange Figurations” will be reviewed and considered.

IMAGE PRESENTATION: Artwork submitted may be represented by prints up to 8.5″ x 11″, by digital images on CD, by 35mm slides, or by email entry.
* Prints: Prints of work may be up to 8.5″ x 11″ and may be digital (ink jet, laser etc.) or photographic prints. Artist name, title, size, media and price should be on the front or back of the print. If you want your prints returned, be sure to follow the return of materials guidelines below.
* Digital files: Digital image files may be submitted on CD, DVD or Zip discs. Images should be readable on PC platform and should be in TIF or JPG format. No files larger than 15MB please. Reference prints must be included. Reference prints may be any size individual prints up to 8.5″ x 11″ (label as for prints above) or may be a single sheet with multiple prints representing the images on the disc. If submitting a single sheet , next to each image write the artist, title, media and dimensions. If you submit digital files without reference prints, your disc may not be properly viewed.
* Online email entry: To enter via email: 1 )Type your contact and image list information requested on the entry form into your email message. 2)Attach your images to the email. 3) Email to LimnerEntry@aol.com. 4)Pay the entry fee using their Pay Pal payment page. [Digital files emailed should be in JPG format, 72dpi and no larger than 12″ in any dimension.]
* Slides: Slides should be 35mm. On each slide write the image list number and artists name, title of work, media and dimensions. Indicate top of work. Do not send glass slides, glass slides are almost always crushed in the mail.

RETURN OF MATERIALS: A self-addressed-stamped-envelope (SASE) must be included with sufficient postage for the return of submission materials. Artists outside the US who cannot obtain US stamps may add return postage cost to the entry fee at a rate of $1.00US per ounce of mail. NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance no later than July 31, 2010. Results will be posted on or before this date at: http://www.slowart.com/results. Artists who do not include the SASE because they do not want their slide or print materials returned must provide a self addressed stamped #10 (letter size) envelope if they wish to be notified by mail. FEES: There is a $35.00 entry fee for 1-4 images. If you wish to include more than 4, please include $5.00 for each additional. Details of artwork count as an additional image. On ArtAndArtDeadlines.com, I preach the wisdom of not getting complacent…of continuing to enter shows. However…

I have been working on my show Psychomachia (see a detail of Lust: The Three Legged Man at left) for more than a year now with Arizona artist Jerry Portelli, and I have worked on it to the exclusion of almost everything else.

So, I really need to take my own advice and decide that it is time that I at least enter a couple of shows…it is all about balance…apples AND Cheetos.

Juried by: Sylvia White. Sylvia White is founder and director of Contemporary Artists’ Services. She has been advising artists on matters related to career development since 1979. ACCEPTANCE: Accepted work may be refused if it does not conform to the image entry, at the Juror’s discretion. No substitutions of accepted works will be allowed. All accepted work must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibit.

Artists will be responsible for delivery and return shipping of all their artwork. Sylvia White Gallery will assist in providing e-mailing lists and press contacts.

SALES: Unless otherwise specified, accepted works will be considered for sale at the price indicated and 30% of the selling price will be retained by The Sylvia White Gallery. A purchaser may not remove work until the end of the exhibition.

INSURANCE: Great care will be taken with all work, but artists are responsible for insuring their own pieces if they wish. The Sylvia White Gallery will not be responsible for any loss or damage to work while on the premises or in transit to or from the gallery. Artists are advised to get their own insurance.

DELIVERY & RETURN: All work must be suitably framed, wired and ready for hanging, or installation. Graphics, prints, watercolors and pastels must be framed under Plexiglas. NO GLASS.

Shipped work must be packaged in a reusable container. NO STYROFOAM PEANUTS. A prepaid waybill for its return must be enclosed. Please make shipping arrangements through the U.S. Postal Service, DHL, FedEx, or UPS. COD returns are not acceptable. The gallery accepts no responsibility for work not retrieved on the pick-up date and will charge the artist $5.00 a day thereafter for storage. After 30 days the gallery may dispose of the work.

Beers Lambert Contemporary Art invites all artists working in 2D and 3D to submit to an international exhibition, I Am Solitary I Am An Army, in collaboration with Surface Gallery in Nottingham, UK, scheduled for September to October of 2010, that will explore current paths and ideas in contemporary art.

The exhibition wishes to showcase the very best in
emergent art from around the world.

Entry is open to all artists whose work speaks to concepts of identity, progress, temporality, and self, and interpretations of these themes, and/or operates upon this conceptual basis through an exciting approach to medium/material, presentation, and figurative or abstract art.

Beers Lambert encourages submissions from artists whose work explores a unique aesthetic sensibility and a progressive approach to the themes described.

ART PUBLICATION: Applied Art Zine

Proving you exist is an age-old philosophical effort and the frequent stuff of cocktail party debates. However, it is rarely an artistic endeavor.

“Proof of Myself” is a start-up art zine featuring applied art that aims to address the self-titled debate.

In December of 2009, we featured the artwork of Catherine Roach. Roach is currently attending The New England Art Institute in Boston for Graphic Design, and approaching her final semester. She has decided to start an art zine featuring applied art.

Here’s the call…

PROOF OF MYSELF is a new zine/photobook/art collaborative.

“Proof of Myself for me,” says Roach, “means anything that you have done what reflects you. Your identity, your love, your passion, your favorite color, your home, your town, whatever.

“As long as your work reflects something that is you. Something that is a piece of you, something that proves you exist.”

Roach would prefer hand-made pieces.

For instance, if you want to submit a writing piece, make it handwritten and mailed (or scanned).

If you want to submit art, scan pieces that are tangible. Mixed media with some digital aspects are cool too, as long as they have a “hand-made” feel.

Please don’t mail original artwork unless you do not want it returned.

Just scan and email your artwork to Catherine Roach.

Remember, I always suggest you research your juror, curator, gallery director or editor. Take a look at Roach’s Featured Artist post from December 2009 to get a better idea of who she is and what might make the cut.

“As the school year winds down, educators like myself have the pleasure of reveling in the birth of projects that have been gestating in classrooms, darkrooms, studios and computer labs for the past year.

“Challenged by rigorous institutional demands and the need to create compelling work while maintaining their individuality, students’ progress and achievements become evident in the richness and diversity of their final portfolio presentations.

“In an effort to bring some of this work to a wider audience, we will present a selection of extraordinary work by a few of these outstanding students.

“The names of those involved in the selection process will be posted in the coming days.

“RSVP is a Michael Mazzeo Gallery program of curated online exhibitions. By way of call and response initiated on the gallery blog, artists are asked to submit images to be considered for inclusion in specific, themed shows.

You know how much I love shows that don’t require artists to submit resumes.

I think artwork should be judged on its merits, not its pedigree…but I don’t often trip across artshows where they are brazenly looking for work that has been little seen or documented…the Apeture Portfolio Prize.

Finally…we don’t have to have the “chicken or the egg” conversation. Yippee.
Here’s the call for the Apeture Portfolio Prize.

The purpose of the Aperture Portfolio Prize is to identify trends in contemporary photography and specific artists whom they can help by bringing a wider audience.

In choosing the first-prize winner and runners-up, they are looking for work that is fresh and that hasn’t been widely seen in major publications or exhibition venues.

First prize is $5,000.

The first-prize winner and runners-up are featured in Aperture’s website for approximately one year.

Winners are also announced in the foundation’s e-newsletter, which reaches thousands of subscribers in the photography community.

Deadline: July 14, 2010, at 12:00 noon EST.

Results Announced: November 1, 2010.
