I don’t like aging. I just don’t. I have heard lots of people say that things get better with age. And, while I will grant you that stinky cheese is always better with age (and I love stinky cheese by the way), I am still not seeing the bright side of getting older. Don’t send the emails…they won’t work.

I love new galleries and new galleries with fresh ideas. But, there is a great deal to be said for folks that have been there and done that–who know how to curate, jury and hang a show from years of experience. After 20 years of shows, The Center for Photographic Art has announced a Call for Entries for their 2011 Juried Exhibit. Check it out!

The Center for Photographic Art is pleased to announce the latest in nearly 20 years of Juried Exhibitions. This year, for the first time, registration and submissions will be performed entirely over the Internet.

PRIZES: The jurors will select three images to receive cash prizes: $1000 to the first place, $500 to the second place, and $250 to the third place image.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to all photographers, both amateur and professional, working in all still photographic media. There is no theme for this exhibit; any subject matter is eligible for entry into the 2011 Juried Exhibit.

DEADLINE: November 19, 2010.

FEES: CPA members may submit up to three images for $20. Non-members may submit up to three images for $40. Any entrant can submit up to an additional nine images, at an additional cost of $10 each. No more than a total of 12 images may be submitted.

RULES: No more than two images by a single photographer will be accepted into the exhibition. No more than four images by a single photographer will be accepted into the web gallery.

Artists with work accepted for exhibition or for the web gallery grant the CPA non-exclusive rights to use their images to advertise the exhibition and related programs, for display on the CPA website, and for publication in an exhibition catalog, should there be one.

CALL for ENTRIES:
EMERGING ARTISTS 2011

This is the 19th annual competition for gallery exhibition and awards. This exhibition is devoted to the discovery, introduction and promotion of emerging artists. The exhibition will be held in April 2011 at the Limner Gallery and is open to all artists working in any media. There will be a $1000 cash award and $2400 in publication awards. Deadline for submissions is November 30.

ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 96″ no wider than 120″. Sculptural work must fit through a standard height, 36″wide entry door.

EXHIBITION AND AWARDS: Winning artists will be featured in a group exhibition at the Limner Gallery, April 1 – 30, 2011. The exhibition will also be displayed on the Limner Gallery web site. There will be a $1000 cash prize awarded to one artist. One artist will be awarded a two page display in Direct Art Volume #18, Fall 2011 issue. Two artists will be awarded a single page display. EXHIBITION TERMS:

ENTRY FEES: There is a $35.00 entry fee for one to four artworks entered, presentation is by digital files, prints or 35mm slides. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional artwork above four. Details of 2D artwork count as an additional artwork. Sculptors may provide one additional view per artwork without cost. Artists accepted to exhibit will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments may be by check or money order payable to SlowArt Productions, or by credit card using PayPal.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance no later than December 31, 2010. Results will be posted on or before this date at: http://www.slowart.com/results. Notification will be made via email and/or by mail with the return of materials in the SASE provided by the artist. Read the notification page for details of the notification policy.

PRIVACY POLICY: Artist contact information (address, telephone) is only held for the purpose of contacting selected artists and is not preserved in any database. Entry forms are destroyed and data and image files deleted on the completion of the jury process. All artist emails are added to their future events announcement email list. If you do not wish to be on the email list click the unsubscribe button when you receive the first announcement and your email will be automatically deleted.

DEADLINE: The final postmarked deadline is November 30, 2010. Entries must be postmarked or submitted via email by this date.

All works in the show must be for sale. The gallery will take a 30 % commission on all sales. Sale price is determined by the artist.

Online Entry: On line entries are via email or web post with direct html link . Email files must be in JPG format. JPG files when closed should be approx. 500K (1/2 MB) or less in size, when open approx. 8MB or less. Images may also be posted to a dedicated web page and a link provided to the page. MYARTSPACE , the premier online venue for the contemporary art world, is now offering its third annual art scholarship program to the members of MYARTSPACE.com and NYAXE.com.

MYARTSPACE.com has created a scholarship program for students of artistic merit wishing to continue their education in an approved MFA, BFA, or higher level degree program for the arts. The scholarship is intended for students who exhibit exceptional artistic excellence across mediums of the visual arts, including photography and video, both contemporary and traditional in nature.

The scholarship arises from our commitment to support the visual arts and its artists. For four years MYARTSPACE has been a key force in availing opportunity in the arts on the web and in global events. They are providing a total of 6 scholarships — 3 scholarship prizes for undergraduate students and separately 3 scholarship prizes for graduate students.

FINAL DEADLINE for submissions is December 12, 2010, 12PM Midnight PST.

Early registration ends OCTOBER 31, 2010. Free 3-month Premium subscription to MYARTSPACE for those applicants that have registered before the early registration date. This is an optional paid service which is normally $75 per year.

Scholarship candidates must have registered for the competition AND submitted an online MYARTSPACE gallery to the scholarship competition before the final deadline. The gallery submitted can have up to 20 images (JPEG format, up to 10mb each in size).

WINNERS ANNOUNCED: Scholarship Winners will be notified by January 31, 2011 and publicly announced on or before February 15th, 2011.

RULES & REGULATIONS:

Contest entrants must be a member of MYARTSPACE.com or NYAXE.com. Membership is free.

Student artists must register for the competition and submit their work to the scholarship competition by December 12, 2010.

All students who register before OCTOBER 31, 2010 will be considered early registrants, and will receive a 3-month free subscription to premium services for MYARTSPACE.

Registered contestants must submit an online MYARTSPACE gallery, containing up to 20 images in it, for review by the jury panel. Accompanying the gallery submission it is advisable to have an Artist Statement as well as CV/Resume which should be constructed in the Artist Profile in MYARTSPACE.

They highly recommend that artists submit as high a resolution image as possible for jury purposes. They recommend JPEG or TIFF images that are at least 2000 pixels in width by 2000 pixels in height at minimum, and could be up to 10mb in size. They create a lower resolution screen image for website viewing. The higher resolution image that was submitted is used for the jury panel.

Applicant must be a current student or pending enrollment in an accredited art school pursuing a BFA or MFA, BS or other approved degree programs.

CRITERIA FOR JUDGEMENT:

The jury panel will consist of the MYARTSPACE internal staff as well as outside consultants.

All applicants from an accredited program will be considered, world wide.

The prizes will be granted to winners based on artistic merit, across all mediums of expression, including video and photography.

All genres will be considered including contemporary and traditional imagery.

There is no “theme” or restraints on artistic expression for submissions to be considered.

Many of you seemed to love the idea of finding new inspiration in Barcelona with a Residency sponsored by homesession.org. What about finding inspiration as a group? I don’t mean a collaborative group necessarily…

What about that group of you out there that are fighting for the arts in your community, or a group of friends separated by life (and miles) that need a chance to reconnect…to art and each other?

Check out this Call for Submissions for those interested in an Artist Residency in Tokyo sponsored by 3331 Arts Chiyoda. Anyone can apply, but they encourage groups of 2 to 5 artists. 3331 Arts Chiyoda is a newly-launched arts and cultural center in the heart of Tokyo. Maybe their new beginning can be a part of your renewal.

3331 Arts Chiyoda is launching a new residency program open to artists, curators and creative practitioners internationally. With a full range of facilities including accommodation, studio and gallery, creative practitioners have the exceptional opportunity to extend their artistic engagement in the heart of Tokyo.

Not only will artists be able to pursue their own individual research and practice, but they will be connected to the extensive network of Tokyo’s art scene through the hub that is 3331. With the energy of the electronics and anime haven of Akihabara right at one’s doorstep and the traditional cultures of downtown but a stone’s throw away artists will be able to experience all aspects of this kaleidoscopic city from this convenient base.

Artists are not only able to spend time in Tokyo, but are able to create work onsite and then finally exhibit what they have developed during their stay, in the distinct setting of 3331 Arts Chiyoda. They are pleased to be able to offer these facilities to artists who can contribute to the diverse creative expressions of this cosmopolitan metropolis and engage its inhabitants in new ways.

They particularly encourage applications from galleries, museums, universities, and arts organizations. CALL for ENTRIES: Commercial Art Videos

NUTCRACKERS

I am intrigued by video production & video editing. My 11-year old received a video camera for Christmas 2009, and the whole family has had a blast experimenting. My personal favorite is my child’s battle of the decorative wooden nutcrackers with a background soundtrack of Smoke on the Water…hummed by him. Hehehehe.

CALL for ENTRIES:
“Commercial” Art Video

Commercials may or may not be the most creative thing on TV or the Internet, but we think you can make them better. Take any broadcast commercial, cut it, dub it, repeat it, or flip it and make it art.

Artists, producers, directors kids, adults and non-art people are invited to submit a manipulated “commercial” of up to 60 seconds in length using a broadcast commercial as the raw footage. Each submission may utilize the video and audio in any way and may include other footage; pretty much everything is eligible. Videos must be under 3MB in length in .flv or .swf formats.

All submitted and accepted videos will be available at www.apexart.org/videocall.htm and will be presented in an exhibition at apexart from November 10 – December 22, 2010. During the exhibition’s run, videos will be voted on by visitors of the exhibition space and the website. The top five works will be presented on a public screen in Manhattan and the creator of the top scoring work will receive a $2,000 cash prize.

DEADLINE: All work must be submitted by Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010.

Applications are welcomed and encouraged from around the world.

Commercials do not have to be in English.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I send more than one video?
A: No, please send your best one, they will only accept one video per person.

Q: I have a .avi, .mp4, .m4v, .mov (etc.) video file. How do I convert my video file into a .flv or .swf file?
A: Most video editing programs allow you to export in .flv or .swf. If you cannot find this option, you can always use an online program such as YouTube or Vimeo to get the correct file format. Upload the original and then just download. It will be auto converted.

Q: Can I use any kind of commercial?
A: Any commercial (video) from TV or internet that tries to sell or promote something can be used for your video editing project.

Q: How much of an original commerical needs to be used in order to be eligible?
A: There is no time limit, however it should be evident from viewing your edited video that a commercial was used in the footage.

Q: Will I get sued for using copyrighted material?
A: Videos submitted using copyrighted material that is substantially edited and manipulated is generally considered artistic commentary under the Fair Use doctrine.

Q: When will the videos be on view at apexart?
A: The video call exhibition will be on view for voting at www.apexart.org from Nov. 10 – Dec. 22, 2010.

Q: Can I or should I submit images or cvs?
A: No resumes are needed. They just need your name, email address, and location (city, state/country) in addition to the video.

Q. Who will vote on the videos?
A. Anyone with an internet connection will be able to vote for their one favorite video. Don’t forget to tell your friends to vote.

NO ENTRY FEE: Rejected Art AWARD

REJECTION SUCKS

I’ve been rejected personally, professionally and artistically… and they all suck. On rare occaison, I take the artistic rejection personally. I’ve been known to hold a grudge. I’ll omit the name, but let’s just say there IS a gallery out there that rejected four of my pieces for four different shows in ONE year. You won’t find their Calls on this site EVER.

Bitter? Maybe a little.

CALL for ENTRIES: Scary Art – BOO!

BOO!

I love Halloween. I love pumpkin pancakes and candy corn. And the season to consume them both is just around the corner. I am also a fan of all the retro-inspired graphics that surround this time of the year – smiley pumpkins and figurines of little kids covered in white sheets as the cutest ghosts that ever existed. However, I am fascinated by all the dark imagery that surrounds the season as well.

Check out this Call for Entries from Bristol Art Gallery called “BOO.” It is an all-hung, open exhibit which could build your resume and the entry fee is only $15. It is open to both 2-D and 3-D art, and the gallery only takes 30% commission…what more could you want in a show?

CALL for ENTRIES: Boo!

Bristol Art Gallery’s Open Juried exhibit “BOO!” will be open to original works in 2-D, 3-D & Photography created in the last two years which depict the “Spirit” and many moods of “ALL HALLOWS’ EVE”.

PRIZES: Over $2000. in cash prize awards, 1st, 2nd & 3rd place in all three categories.

Opening Reception Sat., Oct. 2nd from 4 – 7. Closing Reception Sat., Oct. 30th from 6 – 9 or when it’s over! Costumes are optional.

Refreshments will be served and for those believers curious about their futures a “real” Fortune Teller will be in attendance.

Open to all artists at least 18 years old. Art work previously shown at Bristol Art Gallery not eligible. All 2-D ART must be suitably wired for hanging, no sawtooth or clips. All entries must be for sale. Up to three entries allowed per artist.

Size restriction are as follows: Artists may enter one piece that must not measure more than 24×36, and two entries that must not measure more than 18×24 including frames. Unframed works must be properly gallery wrapped with no rough canvas or staples showing.

3-D ART must be fully assembled and not to exceed more than 18×24 with base.

PHOTOGRAPHY – Prints must be framed. The minimum print size at least one dimension must be greater than 9 inches. Maximum size of 16×20 including frame.

ENTRY FEE: $15 plus an additional $5 each additional entry & 30% commission

All work must be properly protected and labeled with artists name /address /phone number /email/ title, price and media info of their entry.

The Gallery will do it’s best to protect your artwork when it is in their possession but it will not be insured by the Bristol Art Gallery and the gallery will not be held responsible for loss or damage.

They recommend that artists carry their own insurance.

The gallery also reserves the right to use your name and images of your artwork for publicity purposes. Your entry into this exhibition constitutes your acceptance of the terms of this agreement.

ART PUBLICATION: Fraction Magazine

It has been over a week since I’ve stood on my soapbox and lectured about the advantages of Art Publication. You’ve missed it…haven’t you? Okay, Okay…if you insist, I will take candy from a baby. Here goes: Art Publication is great for your art career. Most exposure is good exposure. There, that’s the short version.

Fraction Magazine has an open-call for submissions for future issues as well as their One Picture Look feature that began in May 2010. Fraction Magazine is an online photography magazine and photographic review.

ART PUBLICATION: Fraction Magazine Open Call

Fraction Magazine was started in a little coffee shop in Albuquerque, New Mexico in March of 2008 by Joshua Spees and David Bram. In 2009, Josh got married, moved to the East Coast, and is now pursuing other photographic avenues.

Today, Fraction Magazine is edited and curated by David, and often includes guest curators and writers such as Melanie McWhorter, Mary Goodwin and Larissa Leclair.

One Picture Look is a new feature (May 2010) to Fraction Magazine.

The idea is to bring attention to the amazing work that is either found on Flickr within the Fraction Magazine Flickr Group or the work that is submitted directly to Fraction Magazine. The idea is that one photograph, will make you want to look at more.

So if you have one picture, that they just have to see, please visit the submissions page or add it to the flickr group.

The One Picture Look page will be promoted just like the rest of the magazine and will be updated every couple of weeks.

To submit your photographs for the next issue of Fraction Magazine, please send a link to your site and tell them the specific portfolio or body of work to look at. Please remember to put “submission” in the subject line of your email.

ARTIST RESIDENCY: Barcelona

Need a little inspiration? I turn to food, and I suspect that comes as a surprise to not a one of you. I miss paella de marisco —which ceased to be an option when my husband developed an allergy to shellfish…but I digress.

Instead of turning to seafood paella–which will only make your rear end larger and, if you’re like me, leave you feeling guilty–think Spain…no, really. Check out this opportunity for an Artist Residency Opportunity in the heart of Barcelona brought to you by the art lovers and supporters at homesession.org!

HomeSession: Artist Residency in Barcelona

Where? The flat is a modern loft situated in the center of Barcelona, just near Montjuic Park, 10 minutes walking from the historic center. The area is quiet, lively and “authentic”. There are 2 metro lines. It is a 92 square meter flat with two patios (+ 15 square meters each).

What? The idea of this residency is based on a real integration to local life: the artist shares the flat with the founders of the project: Jerome Lefaure and Olivier Collet. They receive artists for short residencies, up to one month. Of course, the artist has his own keys during his stay.

They have sets, tripods and spotlights for photography and provide support for local contacts, equipments and eventual research of performers, locations, materials. The residency is mainly dedicated to creation, but they often organize a presentation of the work, that makes for a greater interaction with the local art community.

Accomodation: Sharing a flat enables the artist to enjoy freedom as well as better integration with the local life and cultural scene. The private place for the artist is a closed alcove (5,5 Sq. m.) with a double sofa/bed, opening on the kitchen/living room. In the living room, a desk is reserved for the artist; Internet access is available in the whole flat.

Common equipment:
– broadband internet access
– kitchen, refrigerator, micro-wave, washer, oven, dining table chairs etc.
– bathroom, washing machine
– television, video, videoprojector, radio, CD player
– air conditioning / radiant floor heat

Residency as an interchange: They want the residency to be a real opportunity for the artist and are prepared to be a link toward spanish artists and the local artistic community, in terms of making possible collaborations, four-handed creations or artistic events depending on the artist’s interests. Open studio and gallery exhibitions are organized if possible during or at the end of the residency.

Conditions of the residency, fees and living expenses: Due to the limitations of the flat, they only provide residency to one artist each period. The residency is planned for a short period (maximum: one month), and it is possible for a same artist to apply for two residencies.

The do not charge any residency fees to the artists. As an interchange, they ask the artist to give them a piece of artwork at the end of the residency. The artist will also finance their own living expenses as well as the trip to Barcelona on their own.

The thing I love most about being an artist is the creation of the work, but a close second is belonging to a community of artists. Most artists are happy to have a local group of close knit creative types with which to share, and I am overwhelmingly fortunate to have all of you. Okay, I’m tearing up more than when I chop onions, folks.

My point is…while many of us already have an artist family, we must remember that families have to grow or the lineage will end. I have a friend in NYC who is trying to expand her fold. Tryst Collective is looking for locals for a show called “BP’s Black Plague,” but never say never…send ’em your stuff because you just never know what could happen.

TRYST COLLECTIVE: BP’s Black Plague

NYC-based arts group, the Tryst Collective, is looking for artists, photographers, sculptors, crafters, musicians, etc. who would like to be a part of a *one-night* group show – an art, music, and networking event.

This is the first installment of a series of themed Trsyt shows that will be held throughout the year. This particular show—BP’s Black Plague: a response in art and music— is centered around the reactions and responseswithin the creative community to the BP oil spill and/or our nation’s oil dependence.

Jessica Rowshandel writes, “We are still waiting for the date, but we are aiming for mid to late Sept. We are looking for local people who can get to the venue the night of the show since it’s a D-I-Y sort of thing.

“The venue is R Bar New York City, which is located at 218 Bowery Street, New York NY 10012. The event will be ticketed.

Artists and musicians are encouraged to sell their work and network -making money and new connections.

“We do not take any commission. We ask that the participants invite friends/followers because we need to pay for the space through ticket sales and more importantly, we are building a community.

“This is a very grassroots group and is held in nontraditional arts space, so participants should expect that. The venue allows us to hang work and we also have presentation and table easels. There will be a cash bar.”
