I wouldn’t be able to turn veggies into spaghetti if it weren’t for the Vegetable Twister, after all. Per usual, typically all that is true in food is often true in art. And this Call from Project Basho is looking celebrate new and contemporary photography.

CALL for ENTRIES: ONWARD

Project Basho is pleased to announce ONWARD ‘11, an annual juried photography competition exclusively featuring the work of emerging photographers. ONWARD focuses on new work that continues to push the medium. With ONWARD, photographers have the opportunity to present their vision and talent to a broad audience.

Through their partnerships with other photography organizations, photographers will have the chance to foster and grow a vibrant and rich photography community. There is no specific theme for ONWARD and submissions are open to any photographic medium from historical processes to new digital technologies.

MEDIA: ONWARD is open-themed, and any photographic medium, including but not limited to historical processes, traditional silver printing, chromogenic printing, and digital processes can be submitted for consideration.

ELIGIBILITY:ONWARD is open to individuals who have not had previous commercial gallery representation or a contractual agreement with any gallery.

JUROR: This year’s juror is Photogarpher Larry Fink. Fink’s career in photography is multifaceted and lengthy to say the least. He has been a photographer and educator of photography for over 40 years, and his work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Musee de la Lausanne Photographie in Belgium, and the Musee de l’Elysee in Switzerland. He has also been awarded two Guggenheim Fellowships in 1976 and 1979.

Fink’s work is the subject of numerous books including Social Graces, Runway, Somewhere There’s Music, Boxing, and Night at the Met. Under the early tutelage of Lisette Model, he developed a unique and offbeat style of empathetic reportage. With his distinct visual and political perspective, he has explored the underbelly of human interaction in all its glory and demise exemplified in his celebrated body of work, “Social Graces”.

DEADLINE: All entries must be submitted via online form by 11:59 PM EST on November 19, 2010. Entries sent by mail must be received no later than November 19, 2010.

NOTIFICATION will occur by e-mail by December 17, 2010.

FEES: The entry fee is $40 for up to three images, plus $10 for each additional image. A maximum of five images will be accepted. Submussion fees must be paid for with the online submission form at the time of submission. If paying by check (for those submitting slides), please contact Project Basho via e-mail first. Entrants from outside of the U.S. may only pay via Visa, Mastercard, American Express or PayPal. Friends of Project Basho will receive a $10 discount off the submission fee.

CALL for ENTRIES: 12x12x12

MEASURE ME

I don’t like to measure when I cook. Yep, I’m one of those folks that cooks with pinches and dashes. Never trust a recipe from me. The “ish” in all of my measurements should be implied. But for someone that doesn’t like to measure, I own 3 glass measuring cups, a set of stainless steel measuring cups and a great set of vintage measuring spoons. An enigma rolled in conundrum, eh?…sounds like sushi.

Check out this great call that will require that you measure. The Todd Gallery at MTSU has put out a Call for Entries for work in all media…so long as your it is no larger than 12″x12″x12″.

CALL for ENTRIES: 12×12

ELIGIBILITY: The 12×12 exhibition will be a juried and comprised of works that do not exceed 12˝ x 12˝ x 12˝ (this includes the frame for two- dimensional works, and in the case of three-dimensional works, includes the base). There are no media restrictions. Artists must be at least 18 years of age, and works must have been completed in the last two years. The exhibition is closed to students, staff, and faculty of Middle Tennessee State University. Works previously exhibited at MTSU are ineligible.

MEDIA: Open to all media that do not exceed 12”X12”X12”

DEADLINE: December 3, 2010

ENTRY FEE: $35 for up to three entries

JUROR: Hamlett Dobbins is the curator of the Clough-Hanson Gallery on the campus of Rhodes College, Memphis TN. He is represented by David Lusk Gallery, Memphis, TN and Fourteen30, Portland, Oregon. Dobbins has been the recipient of a Tennessee Arts Commission Individual Artist Grant and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.

ENTRY PROCEDURE: Fill out application at: http://www.mtsu.edu/art/. A non-refundable fee of $35 must be paid via MTSU Marketplace at the time of submission.

Important – Your application is incomplete until you email your image(s) to Gallery@MTSU.edu. Images should be 300 dpi and no larger than 1 MB each.

ENTRY SPECIFICATIONS: Only 3 pieces/images may be submitted. Each digital image can be no more than 1 megabyte in size. Each image file must be labeled with name and entry number (ex. JaneSmith_1).

DOCUMENTATION: Photographs and videos will be taken to document the show for our archives, publicity, and an exhibition catalog.

I’ve been receiving lots of email in the past few weeks. For some reason, many of my readers prefer to email me directly as opposed to leaving comments. I love it. Thank you. Much of that email has spoken of inspiration–needing it, wanting and sometimes finding it. I find inspiration in food. How can you not be inspired by the perfect slice of pizza?

2011 Michael H. Kellicutt International Juried Photo Show
Through a Lens– Inspiration or Desperation

Great photography often brings with it strong emotional impact. This year’s theme, Through a Lens: Inspiration or Desperation is about evoking one of two strong emotional responses: Inspiration or Despair. Possible subjects could include people, places or things that inspire or cause feelings of despair.

ENTRY PROCEDURE: To enter, check the website. Entry information will be collected online. When you complete the entry information, you will be given the option to upload your images, or send the images on a CD or DVD.

Entry fees can be collected online using PayPal or a credit card. Checks and credit cards will also be accepted by mail.

All rights to the submitted images remain the property of the artist.

Submitting artists grant The Coastal Arts League the right to use entered work for the their website, printed lists of selected images, and for future show promotions.

FEATURED ARTIST: T.S. McFadden

CRUNCHY GOODNESS!

The $2 Art Contest is getting to be like pulling teeth. And, I can’t afford to loose my teeth. While I love silky bisques and hollandaise, a blogger cannot live by hollandaise alone. What good is the hollandaise when you’re dreaming of corn nuts and have pulled all your teeth? I think this month’s entries for the $2 Art Contest were extraordinarily tasty.

The entries I receive each month for the $2 Art Contest are incredibly varied. I see work from every imaginable media, from artists at every level of their careers–some polished and PR savvy, some more vulnerable, but honest. Because it isn’t a level playing field, it isn’t really just about choosing the best art. I love having the honor of reviewing all the work, but I am made anxious by the necessity of choosing.

The Featured Artist chosen from September entries is T.S. McFadden. McFadden’s work hits so many of the right notes for me–multiple media, over-the-top devotion to the creative process, and a love for found objects and recycled materials.

FEATURED ARTIST:
T.S. McFadden

T.S. McFadden is an intuitive artist whose prolific body of work explores process, internal dialoques and facilitation. He was born in a small town in Ohio and raised in the country. He is now based in New York.

McFadden has sculpted and painted since he was a child and is self-taught but for a handful of private lessons. He studied in the fine arts, graduated from Kent State University and has spent time in Europe studying other artists.

While I am in love with the Elephant Graveyard series on which McFadden is currently working, I chose to focus this feature on McFadden’s Mother Series of paintings. As I have shouted from the mountain tops many times, my artistic skill does not lie in painting media. But, I find my inadequacy in this area makes me appreciate the talent in others even more.

The Mother Series is what the artist calls an abstract expression of logic. That will serve as a huge contradiction for some. The next contradiction will come from the idea that these paintings are a sort of recycled assemblage.

“This series was created using remnants from my palattes, which were scraped and pulled and meant for the garbage. Too haunting and too beautiful to be discarded, they were stacked and saved for years. The kinetic energy found in the palatte is art in its purest form–it is the unintentional genesis of intention.”

There’s that logic for you.

I always send a quiz to my Featured Artist picks to gain a little insight and help me feel inspired to write. Some of the questions are food related, some are art related, some try to unveil the inspiration behind it all. What have a learned from the quizzes as a whole?

Artists don’t often like
to give direct answers, ha.

McFadden’s answers did not disappoint. When asked about his favorite foods, he reinforced the notion of contradictions. How do you claim corn nuts and sashimi among your favorites? I suspect those choices just reinforce how the pull of opposites can produce a cohesive balance.

What do you think?

When asked about his favorite media, McFadden decided upon Experimentation. Perfect.

And what school of art does feel
his work fits? Intuition.
Even more perfect.

Energy, emotion and circumstance direct him. He uses layers of color to examine, define and mask an inner world. Organic and graphic elements invade the space, push the calm and subdue the conflict.

McFadden considers his creativity intrinsic and his pronouncement of it solely environmental.

He is a painter and a sculptor, a published author, a writer of poetry and music, a furniture designer and whatever else the moment he is living in requires him to be.

Thank you, T.S. McFadden, for the Mother Series…and for reminding us of the old school definition of “artistic.” I, for one, can’t wait to see the Elephant Graveyard series!

CALL for ENTRIES: The American Dream

How often have you heard the sentence, “What’s more American than pie?” Honestly, I’m not a huge fan. I know you are shocked that I am not over the moon about any food; however, apples just aren’t my thing. I like raw Granny Smith apples with a generous dash of salt, but I just don’t want them cooked. Let start a new saying, “What’s more American than rhubarb pie?” You heard it here first, folks. This next Call from the Woman Made Gallery is also looking to redefine the idea of American.

Check out this Call for Entries called The American Dream: A Juxtaposition from the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago. I’ve shown work at Woman Made before, and I always admire the curatorial eye of their jurors. The fee is reasonable, and you know how I love a theme. Take a closer look…

The American Dream

It has been since the Founding Fathers declared in 1776 that “all men are created equal” and Americans were granted the privilege of “certain unalienable rights” such as “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” that people began to search for the abstract notion of ‘The American Dream.’

The American Dream is a philosophy that has grown out of the perspective of the people living it and has become as individual as those who still seek to pursue it and understand it.

The American Dream: a Juxtaposition seeks to define our current interpretation of ‘The American Dream’ while acknowledging what this dream exposes our minds, bodies, and environment to.

MEDIA: This exhibition is open to all media that address the hopes, promises, and prosperity of ‘The American Dream’ as well as the inconsistencies and consequences of ‘The American Dream’.

Online Submissions: Submit jpgs of up to three of your works on their website. Please include an artist statement and a $30 entry fee. Please note the deadline is FIVE days away. You don’t have time to mail an entry…use the online submission.

Juror: Catherine Blackwell Peña (BFA/MFA) is a working artist and educator. Her artwork blends photography, installation, public art, and sculptural elements in works that challenge the viewer to reposition their perspective physically and mentally. Reoccurring themes in her work are humans altered relationship with nature and the boundaries and limits of our built environment.

Peña’s work has been exhibited in-group shows in Seattle, New York, Chicago, Memphis, St. Louis, Boulder, Las Vegas, and Kansas City. Outside of her studio practice, Peña is dedicated to teaching, and exploring Public Art and Social Practices not only through educational settings but also in collaborations with nonprofits and community organizations.

Peña currently teaches at Memphis College of Art and Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN and also acts as a Public Art Workshop Coordinator for Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

ART PUBLICATION: Blue Ice Magazine

I am privileged to know a large number of artists that are multi-talented writers, singers, songwriters, musicians, performing artists, visual artists…and foodies. That’s a talent, too, folks. Being a foodie requires educating your palate to accept snails as food and taking the time to learn the subtleties of ingredients. But never fear, this Call for Entries from Michigan Technological University doesn’t require use of your tongue…just your creativity and talent for prose, poetry and/or art.

Check out this great Call for Submissions from Blue Ice Magazine, an online literary journal affiliated with Michigan Technological University’s Humanities Department. There is no fee, no payment and no deadline. No, I am not joking. There are also no acceptable excuses.

CALL for SUBMISSIONS:
Blue Ice Magazine

Blue Ice, an online literary journal affiliated with Michigan Technological University’s Humanities Department, is accepting submissions of poetry, prose, and art. They claim, “We publish any type of writing and art, as long as it’s good.”

What could be simpler?

Blue Ice is a nonprofit online student literary magazine located in Michigan Tech’s Department of Humanities and a project of the Literary Arts Club (check out their Facebook page).

MEDIA: Poetry, prose, photography, and “art collages made out of multi-colored toenails, etc.” They’re funny too. Cool.

DEADLINE:
None.

NOTIFICATION:

Allow an enormous amount of time for a response – there is no deadline, after all, and you will not be erased from their website.

PAYMENT:

None…but “your name and work will show up in a Google search.”

SUBMISSIONS:

All submission must be original and previously unpublished. Be nice. If you have submitted your work elsewhere, let Blue Ice know. If it gets published elsewhere, let Blue Ice know. And if Blue Ice publishes it first, let the other(s) know.

I often wonder what I would eat if I only had one meal left. I can’t wrap my brain around it, really. It would have to involve goat cheese…and dark chocolate…hollandaise…mussels steamed in white wine…and lots of garlic. But luckily, chance are good I have many, many meals ahead of me. Imagine what went through my head when I ran across this Call for Entries for the One Life Competition…other than food, ha.

One Life is an international open call for photography that delves into the lives of the global community. We are a world of a infinite stories and unique perspectives.

Photography is our way to capture the moments as we experience them. The One Life Photography Competition is your opportunity to share your vision with the world.

Artists Wanted and PDN have partnered to bring photographers together to share images illustrating their lives, loves and passions.

Amy Kellner is the managing editor/arts editor of Vice magazine. She recently co-edited Vice’s 10th annual Photo Issue.

James Morris is currently the Photo Director at Lucky Magazine at Conde Nast Publications. Prior to that, he was the associate photo editor of Allure Magazine. He currently resides in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn.

Conor Risch is the features editor of Photo District News (PDN) and PDNOnline.com. Previously he was senior editor of COOL’EH magazine, and an editor for illustrated book producer becker&mayer!, a division of Chronicle Books. Born and raised in the Seattle area, he now lives in New York with his wife and bulldog.

Stephen Walker has been the Photo Director for Nylon Magazine since 2007. In 2008 he founded nextspacegallery.com, an online 3d gallery with an archive of 3d artworks. He currently lives in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.

Sometimes an egg is just an egg. Yes, I love them benedict. I love them scrambled, in caesar salad and as omelettes stuffed with goat cheese and peppers. But sometimes an egg is great just as an egg. The same is true of art. While much of this site’s attention is directed at non-respresentational and contemporary art and photography, there is such a vast American tradition of representational work that I would be remiss not to celebrate that talent and potential in my readers as well. Rachel Parker is one of my favorites.

Check out this Call for Entries from The Legacy Gallery for the 1st Annual Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art. This show will fill a 10,000 square foot gallery in Scottsdale, AZ and offer a $10,000 first prize for Best of Show. Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: 1st Annual Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art

You are invited to enter the 1st Annual Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art. This competition will feature the finest in representational figurative, portrait, still life, floral, landscape, interior, wildlife, and western themes.

The Salon will be hosted by The Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ and will utilize the 10,000 sq. ft. upper level of the gallery. The show will be featured in national publications and a mailing will be sent to an extensive mailing list.

PRIZES: Over $25,000 in cash prizes including a $10,000 first prize for Best of Show.

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to all artists. All work submitted must be your own original design, completed independently, and must not have been exhibited previously or have been available for purchase. Representational work only.

MEDIA: Acceptable mediums include oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and all drawing media. Photography and computer generated artwork is not eligible for this competition. Artwork dimensions need to be within 192 sq. inches to 900 sq. inches (for example, 12” x 16”- 24” x 36”). Artwork must be framed and wired for hanging. Gallery wrap is acceptable, providing the painting extends and covers all four sides of the gallery wrap. No metal frames. All works submitted must be available for sale. No substitutions allowed.

SALES: The retail price must be in line with your current retail price structure in your galleries and must include frame. Proceeds from a sale will be 60% to the artist and 40% to the Salon. No marketing, catalog or advertising fees will be charged to the artists.

ENTRY FEE: A $45 entry fee covers up to 3 unique submissions. Only a maximum of two pieces can be accepted per artist. Checks, money orders, Visa or Master Card are accepted. This fee is non-refundable and must accompany your submission.

SUBMISSIONS: Only digital entries will be accepted. Entries must be submitted on one CD with each file saved in a TIFF or JPEG format at 300 dpi and 5” x 7”. No slides will be accepted. A match print of at least 4” x 6” must accompany the digital entry. The CD and match print must be labeled with the artist’s last name, first name, title, dimensions (height listed first), medium and price. For example: smith_john_sunset_20x16_oil on canvas_4500.jpg . CD’s and match prints will not be returned to artist.

DEADLINE: All entries must be postmarked on or before January 15, 2011. Entries received with a postmark date later than January 15, 2011 will not be considered. Entry acceptance will be notified though email.

Blue is a color that runs deep with symbolism. One can see and feel blue. Blue has many emotional, religious, political and even gender connotations. Explore what blue symbolizes and how blue can illustrate a specific meaning without the use of words or even color.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to all photographers world wide, both amateur and professional. The Center invites photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to participate in its exhibitions.

AWARDS: With selection for this exhibition, featured artist’s work will be seen by an international audience of collectors, curators, art consultants and other advocates of fine art photography. ART PUBLICATION: Open Call from Fotoblur

Is it wrong that I enjoy the idea of torturing my readers…just a little? I know some of you that subscribe by email enjoy getting your morning dose of art deadlines combined with ridiculous food references…and a non-solicited lecture or two. Lecture of the day…art publication. I don’t have the energy to say more. Search “art publication” in the box to the right if you are unfamiliar with my rantings on the subject. Having shortened my lecture, I am only going to indulge in eggs-benedict guilt…not molten-chocolate-lava-cake guilt…if that’s okay with you.

Fotoblur Magazine

Fotoblur Magazine is a community-based, published photography magazine. Published photos are submitted by you. Fotoblur Magazine is published quarterly.

How to become a contributor:

1. Join the community.

2. Create an account

3. When magazine submissions begin, submit high resolutions versions of your best gallery photos for possible publication.

4. Submit as many photos as you like. No restrictions, and it is FREE!

5. Photos are voted on by the Fotoblur community.

6. From the top photos editors make their final selections for publication. For more info on how to get your photos published in Fotoblur Magazine read their FAQ www.fotoblur.com/faq.

Prize: Published work in Fotoblur Magazine.

Submission Requirements:
Submit your photo as a 300dpi jpg file. Save your image so that the width is 7 inches or greater (7″ @ 300dpi = 2100px). They ask that you submit your images in high (80 – 100%) quality. Please keep the file size below 10 MB. Please refrain from adding borders, watermarks, or text of any kind.
