It is almost time for winter cabbage. I am always grateful to those of our local farmers that have the forethought to plant cold-hardy cabbage in late August so that we can have at least one locally-grown GREEN veggie this winter. It is neither a high-yield crop, nor is it a high profit crop. Aside from how delightful it tastes in Irish stew, I am fascinated by the other worldliness of cabbage layers. If you compare the outside leaves to the interior leaves of the cabbage head, you would assume one was some sort of alien mutant version of the other with changes in color, texture AND taste. CURATORS: Marty Henley has a B.S. in Computer Animation and Design, a M.A. in art with a concentration in sculpture, and is a Professional Illustrator and Game Designer. He has a fascination with organic and inorganic textures and masses, their combinations in the creation of imaginary artistic creatures, and the emotional and psychological connections the viewers have with these creations. Marty is currently an Adjunct faculty member at East Tennessee State University, were he teaches 2D design, 3D design, and Color Theory.

Kevin C. Reaves has a B.F.A and an M.F.A. with a concentration in Jewelry and Metals. He is a traditional sculptor, metalsmith, digital modeler and an avid game and toy designer. Kevin is inspired by retro science fiction, Japanese monster movies, toys, games and 80’s pop culture. His designs have a strong geometric aesthetic and they often deal with social issues and human conditions that primarily focus on Western civilization.

JUROR: After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera.

Aline has curated and juried exhibitions for a number of galleries, organizations, and on-line magazines, including Review Santa Fe, Critical Mass, Flash Forward, and the Griffin Museum. In addition, she is a reviewer and educator at many photo festivals across the United States. In 2014, Aline received the Excellence in Teaching Award from CENTER, but she considers her children her greatest achievement. She is a founding member of the Six Shooters Collective and is currently teaching at the Los Angeles Center of Photography, the Santa Fe Photo Workshops, and the Maine Media Workshops. Aline lives and works in Los Angeles.

I ran across Buddha’s finger a couple of years ago. What a bizarre, other-worldly looking fruit. It is a type of citron and has the aroma of a lemon. It makes great candied peel and is fantastic for flavoring vodka, or infusing oil or sugar. The best part is that the pith doesn’t have the bitter taste that is commonly in the white of the lemon. I would love to have a keep just for ornamental reasons since fruit tends to last longer “on the vine” than flowers do. The fruit of this tree just doesn’t look real. The next Call wants just the opposite–subject matter that appears real but is not. This is a science fiction lovers dream…

I drink everyday–bottles & bottles of water. As my alter ego, I perform 4 to 5 days per week, and on stage, I suck down approximately 24 ounces of water every 45 minutes to keep my voice in check. So, let’s talk about the bottles. I know that disposable bottles are not ideal due to the waste issue, but I am paranoid about being able to be certain that I am really getting disposable bottles truly clean. I have searched for a reusable bottle that has a large enough opening (for proper cleaning) but is both very compact (has to fit on a mic stand) and non-descript (so it doesn’t stick out in every picture). JUROR: Gary Braasch is an environmental photojournalist and writer who documents nature, environment, biodiversity and climate change around the world. He has been a nature photographer for more than 40 years, and is internationally known for dramatic, artistic and science-based nature photography. His images and assignment articles have been published by Time, LIFE, New York Times Magazine, Discover, Smithsonian, National Geographic, Scientific American and the United Nations among many others.

Most of his work is on conservation or natural history subjects, the coverage of which gained Gary the Ansel Adams Award from the Sierra Club in the U.S., and the Outstanding Nature Photographer citation from the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA). He was a founding Board Member of NANPA and a founding Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers.

He received the Ansel Adams Award from the Sierra Club and the Outstanding Nature Photographer citation from the North American Nature Photography Association. In 2010 he was named as one of the Forty Most Influential Nature Photographers by Outdoor Photography magazine.

JUROR: Oliver Wasow is a fine art photographer and collector of found photography oddities currently living and working in Rhinebeck, NY. He received his BA from Hunter College and his Master’s from the Transart Institute, in Austria. His work is currently represented by Theodore:Art in NYC.

Wasow has had solo exhibits at the Josh Baer Gallery, Janet Borden Gallery, Tom Solomon Gallery in L.A., The South Eastern Center for Contemporary Art in N.C. & Galerie De Poche in Paris. The sight of a train trestle always conjures my cravings for hot chocolate. My entire life has been spent in residence within about a half-mile of railroad road tracks.
