Something borrowed, something new; something green, something like glue. If I am married to food, the heroes & villians in our relationship are well-defined. Despite my best efforts, potatoes continue to fight against me in the form of chips, fries & luscious, comforting soup. They aren’t inherently evil, but they do have a tendency to lean toward the dark side of gluttony for me. The heroes, conversely, tend to be green & roasted–fresh Brussels sprouts, snap beans & crowns of broccoli. “This exhibit invites artists to submit works that celebrate the heroes and villains that populate history, literature, popular culture, folklore, mythology, psychology, and other realms of human experience and expression. As an artist, where do you find inspiration? In the protagonist or the antagonist, or in the many shades of gray in between? Do historical figures fascinate you, or do you turn to fictional characters for your subject matter? Whether you look to history books or comic books, or your own fantastical imagination, this exhibit welcomes artists that explore the complexities and nuances of heroes and villains.”

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists working in the US

MEDIA: Open to all media

DEADLINE: April 1, 2015

NOTIFICATION: April 17, 2015

ENTRY FEE: $25 for up to 4

JUROR: The exhibit will be juried by a 1-2 member panel; typically, one member of the panel is drawn from the Smithsonian Institution.

AWARDS: Annmarie will present cash awards to outstanding work. Jurors will review installed works (not application images) for award selection. Award amounts are contingent upon sponsorship; typically there are at least three awards each about $250. All award winning artists will receive an invitation for a solo or group show.

SALES: Annmarie will retain a 40% commission of the listed sale price.

What would we do without the iconic dishes that make up the safety net? You know the ones…everyone likes some version of it. They tend to be my “go to” meals on nights when I have to plan in advance. Since I don’t know what anyone will be in the mood for, I hit the highlights. Tonight is spaghetti night. No matter who is coming, I can cover vegetarian, vegan & gluten-free if need be. *Editor’s Note: So many of you have talked to me about selling your work w/o being bogged down running a gallery or about art fairs or gallery representation. I know you often leave the conversation not feeling like nothing is accessible. I like THIS opportunity. If you work in 2-D, don’t dismiss this Call. Some of you might consider simply doing what you already do but direct some content to suit this purpose. It won’t be for everyone, but I think it is a valid option for a lot of you.

MEDIA: Open to 2 Dimensional work including drawing, painting, illustration, printmaking, photography, digital art, mixed media, etc.

THEME: Favorite interests (car, city, kids, gaming, sports, technology, wine, etc.) or specific, iconic brands (Alfa Romeo, Concord, celebrities, etc). Art of Brands is just beginning to fill out their categories, so be sure to let them know if you have work that you think might fit but isn’t currently represented.

DEADLINE: Ongoing entries wanted. *For my favorite artistic procrastinators, don’t worry, I’ll post this Call for Entries at least once per quarter for a while just in case you are too busy to enter today.

CURATORS: A committee of members with backgrounds in art

SALES: For reproductions (like paper, canvas, di-bond, acrylic/plexi glass) the commission rate is 20%. Art of Brands also sells originals. Commission for originals is higher & is discussed with artists individually and separately from the reproduction work. Payments for sales are made to artists on a quarterly basis.

Mozzarella-making is at a standstill at my house. Okay, to be truthful, no one has ever mistaken this house for a cheese factory. But lately, we’ve suffered the loss of one digital thermometer after another. They don’t just stop; the temps slowly start veering from accurate. I don’t normally advocate technology-forward kitchen gadgetry, but a digital thermometer results in far fewer failed batches of cheese–when it works. Born in Dallas, Smith received a BFA in Studio Art, Art History, and English from SMU Meadows School of the Arts in 2011 and completed residencies at Les Subsistances in Lyon, France and Ubud, Indonesia. After concluding an internship at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, she moved to New York City in 2012. Her interest in conceptual and socially-engaged art led her to stints at Artists Space and Creative Time, in addition to her role as curatorial assistant for a new Center for Art & Urbanism in Dallas. Smith lives in Brooklyn and works in Manhattan.

AWARDS: All submissions received will be considered not only for Show #25, but also for future exhibitions at Field Projects and a coinciding online exhibition to Show #25.

The study of inanimate objects; subject matter, placement and compositional balance imply meaning that surmount everyday functionality. Historically, a still life composition is an array of commonplace objects, inert and set in space. These objects often include natural components such as plants, fruits, vegetables, nuts, flowers accompanied by man made objects like dishes, boxes, mirrors and vases within an interior setting at eye level like a table top. Darkroom Gallery wants to contextually explore the Still Life; some may take a traditional approach. JUROR: Independent photography curator, editor, researcher and consultant Yumi Goto focuses on the development of cultural exchanges that transcend borders.

She collaborates with local and international artists who live and work in areas affected by conflict, natural disasters, current social problems, human rights abuses and women’s issues. She often works with human rights advocates, international and local NGOs, humanitarian organizations and as well as being involved as a nominator and juror for the international photographic organizations, festivals and events. She is now based in Tokyo and also a co-funder and curator for the Reminders Photography Stronghold.
