CALL for ENTRIES: Kindred

Learn more about the Kindred Exhibit from Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center!standout SUSTENANCE

My earliest food influences came from my grandmother & her sister Maggie.  They had such different styles.  My grandmother was all about a meat, two veggies, some form of potato, bread & dessert.  Every meal.  My great aunt Mag was all about the drama.  Her corn-on-the-cob was the best.  Her deviled eggs were the best.  Her pancakes were the best.  But everything else, apart from the star of the meal, was an after thought.  I find myself gravitating toward concentrating on one dish and forgetting the rest.  All the glory, none of the mundane. What a strategy, eh?  This next Call wants to know about your familial connections.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center (Solomons, MD) for Kindred. $25 entry.  Are you defined by your connections, your kindred?  Use your connections…

Learn more about the Fairies in the Garden exhibit at Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center!food for FAIRIES

My grandmother loved fairy food.  She would boil sugar and vinegar together for what felt like forever (15 minutes) and then add baking soda at the last minute.  Magically, it seemed, the concoction would turn almost orange.  Once cooled, it had this beautifully buttery flavor.  Sugar + vinegar = fairy food.  Try it.  In the meantime, this next Call is all about the fairies.  Maybe a fairy kitchen?  This one is creative fun…

Learn more about the Marbles to Minecraft exhibit from Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Art Center! one POTATO, two POTATOES

I caught my child harvesting poisonous potatoes.  Digging up a rare, toxic tater is a good thing I’m told. They weren’t meant for us, luckily, and he didn’t dig them from our yard.  He found them in the Desert Biome on Minecraft.  If you don’t understand that last sentence, fear not, you can stick to checkers or chess for this next Call.  Play through…

GROW

I have been searching for my place–in art, in music, in food, in the world.  I have a long history of wanting to do everything at all times.  I want to get it all right, experience it all, eat it all, see it all, do it all.  As a result, I often get none of them quite right.  Silly to some, I believe the answer is geographical.  I continue to seek smaller spaces and places–one town smaller than the next.  Now I seek space, acres inside the next smallest town.  Not isolation so much as controlled interaction.  Space to think.  Space to choose.  Space to grow.  Where is YOUR space?  Your place?  The next Call wants your answers–or questions.  What do you have to say?

Check out this Call for Entries from Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center (Solomons, MD) for Finding Our Place: The Geography of Art.  $25 entry, epic jurors & great art, time & time again. Take a look…

Finding Our Place

“If you don’t know where you are, you don’t know who you are.”
–Wendell Berry

A sense of place can be an essential element in artists’ creative life, and frequently informs their subject matter, materials, style, approach, studio location, and more.  Whether it be ones childhood “primal landscape,” full of memories of home and family, or the pull of a dramatic landscape, or a connection to a particular place based on historical and cultural events, geography calls to the imagination.  As the world shifts to a focus on the virtual, how has this impacted artists’ work?  Has it resulted in a weakening of a sense of place, or has the meaning of place simply adjusted to this new reality?  This exhibit invites artists to explore this issue from either or both sides, and to celebrate what place means to them.  What informs your work?  A physical location or a virtual world?  Do you know “where you are?” — from annmariegarden.org

FOR LOVING YOU

Something borrowed, something new; something green, something like glue.  If I am married to food, the heroes & villians in our relationship are well-defined.  Despite my best efforts, potatoes continue to fight against me in the form of chips, fries & luscious, comforting soup.  They aren’t inherently evil, but they do have a tendency to lean toward the dark side of gluttony for me.  The heroes, conversely, tend to be green & roasted–fresh Brussels sprouts, snap beans & crowns of broccoli.  As I continue to fight the good fight, here’s a great Call that will allow you to fight your own battles.  LOVE this venue…

This exhibit invites artists to submit works that celebrate the heroes and villains that populate history, literature, popular culture, folklore, mythology, psychology, and other realms of human experience and expression. As an artist, where do you find inspiration? In the protagonist or the antagonist, or in the many shades of gray in between? Do historical figures fascinate you, or do you turn to fictional characters for your subject matter? Whether you look to history books or comic books, or your own fantastical imagination, this exhibit welcomes artists that explore the complexities and nuances of heroes and villains.”

The only good reason to be on the beach is a clambake or a lobster boil, in my opinion.  I’ve never been a beach kind of girl.  I’ve always preferred the green leafy mountainside over the golden sands of the beach.  And I’m not sure why.  But I know how many of you are beach combers at heart.  So, this next Call is a great opportunity to express your love of the sea in virtually any media or size.  Take a look…

Beach Comber Art

This exhibit is concerned with the discoveries that artists make at the seaside. How do the sounds, tides, colors, and textures inspire artistic expression? How does the sea affect the content, mood, and execution of works of art? Are you, as an artist, mesmerized by the sea? Do you pick up bits and pieces of things at the beach and take them home? Do you incorporate found objects from the beach into your art? If your work explores these and other complementary issues, the jury invites you to submit your work to this show. The goal is to create a rich and textured exploration of our relationship to the seaside.
