Bugs, both lady & stink, invade my house every winter.  I can only assume their numbers increase wildly due to the need to seek warmth.  The ladybugs that everyone adores are different that the erratic, mean-spirited beetle variety that haunts the windows & lampshades in my home.  And the stinkbugs, oh my.  Did you know that National Geographic wrote an article a few years ago suggesting that these odoriferous creatures add an apple flavor to sauces?  Thanks, but no. BLUE

There aren’t really any naturally-occurring blue foods–of which I am aware.  But maybe that is why I’m not a fan of color blue, with the exceptions of navy (almost purple) & turquoise (high green only).  Blue foods scream, “Plastic” every time I see them–from icing on cakes to the blue tongues of toddlers eating shaved ice.  I know; my food quirks never end.  This next Call is just the perfect shade away from blue.  Take a look…

SINFUL CHOCOLATE

Food legends abound.  Every time I think I have heard them all, another creeps us.  Did you know s’mores are meant to curb sexual desire?  Well, kind of.  Sylvester Graham, the inventor of the graham cracker, was a minister that created an entire lifestyle including the consumption of this self-proclaimed “bland” graham crackers as a way to control wild sexual urges.  We’re thinking he wouldn’t approve of the debauchery that is marshmallow and chocolate though.  This next Call wants your best work surrounding a legend.  Fun theme with an IMMINENT DEADLINE…

BANANAS

I watched soap operas before I could talk.  More accurately, my mother used to put me in my high chair and turn on The Doctors while she enjoyed her lunch.  One day it came to an abrupt stop.  Apparently engrossed in an overly-dramatic subplot, my mother neglected to notice I had fallen asleep and face-planted in my peanut-butter-topped-bananas.  Since then, anytime my mother even see a commercial for a soap opera, the portrait of me covered in pb&b conjures guilt.  This next Call wants your portraits; the food is optional.  Love this…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Darkroom Gallery (Essex Junction, VT) for Semblance.  $24 entry, a great juror & a history of showing spectacular photographers.  We’re proud of how many of our readers have been both shown & awarded in the past few years at Darkroom.  And, well, this theme is always close to my heart–which is just below my face, ha.  *insert rimshot here*  Take a look

TO HANDLE

Mozzarella-making is at a standstill at my house.  Okay, to be truthful, no one has ever mistaken this house for a cheese factory.  But lately, we’ve suffered the loss of one digital thermometer after another.  They don’t just stop; the temps slowly start veering from accurate.  I don’t normally advocate technology-forward kitchen gadgetry, but a digital thermometer results in far fewer failed batches of cheese–when it works.  I think it may be time to just shell out the bucks for one I KNOW won’t die easily.  I surrender.  You should surrender your digital art to this next call.
