So, I eat a lot of Waffle House food.  My husband & I are regionally-touring musicians.  As a result, we often need food at 2am, and Waffle House is the ever-available option–here’s one of a million Waffle House selfies we’ve taken.  (I think they should sponsor us, but no replies yet, ha.)  We don’t tour in the Atlanta area currently, so one Waffle House has remained elusive–Underground Atlanta.  We’ll make it Underground eventually.  In the meantime, here’s YOUR chance to go underground, minus the fried eggs.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Art Below (London, UK) for the Summer Show in London’s Underground.  It is free to apply but does cost to participate (if chosen).  This could be a great opportunity for some of you…

BANANAS

I watched soap operas before I could talk.  More accurately, my mother used to put me in my high chair and turn on The Doctors while she enjoyed her lunch.  One day it came to an abrupt stop.  Apparently engrossed in an overly-dramatic subplot, my mother neglected to notice I had fallen asleep and face-planted in my peanut-butter-topped-bananas.  Since then, anytime my mother even see a commercial for a soap opera, the portrait of me covered in pb&b conjures guilt.  This next Call wants your portraits; the food is optional.  Love this…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Darkroom Gallery (Essex Junction, VT) for Semblance.  $24 entry, a great juror & a history of showing spectacular photographers.  We’re proud of how many of our readers have been both shown & awarded in the past few years at Darkroom.  And, well, this theme is always close to my heart–which is just below my face, ha.  *insert rimshot here*  Take a look

TO HANDLE

Mozzarella-making is at a standstill at my house.  Okay, to be truthful, no one has ever mistaken this house for a cheese factory.  But lately, we’ve suffered the loss of one digital thermometer after another.  They don’t just stop; the temps slowly start veering from accurate.  I don’t normally advocate technology-forward kitchen gadgetry, but a digital thermometer results in far fewer failed batches of cheese–when it works.  I think it may be time to just shell out the bucks for one I KNOW won’t die easily.  I surrender.  You should surrender your digital art to this next call. CALL for Entries: Still Life / Life Still

Cooking has moved into slow motion in my house.  As much as I want to hurry Spring along, I am reminded of our current Winter status by the icy wind that greets me at my front door each morning.  So, my slow cooker lives in a perpetual circuit from counter to refrigerator to sink to counter to refrigerator to sink–almost daily.  Tonight is lentil soup with bacon. Still Life / Life Still

The study of inanimate objects; subject matter, placement and compositional balance imply meaning that surmount everyday functionality.  Historically, a still life composition is an array of commonplace objects, inert and set in space.  These objects often include natural components such as plants, fruits, vegetables, nuts, flowers accompanied by man made objects like dishes, boxes, mirrors and vases within an interior setting at eye level like a table top.  Darkroom Gallery wants to contextually explore the Still Life; some may take a traditional approach.  Others may see Still Life/Life Still as a vehicle to explore new artistic possibilities, in form, function or to convey political or emotive meanings.  Objects caught in their natural surroundings & documented on the fly can make just as poignant an image, i.e., Life Still.  — from darkroomgallery.com
