A WINDOW on the WORLD

There is a great little restaurant in downtown Knoxville called Sapphire that occupies an old jewelry store. It is one of my favorite places to go, sit at a table in the display window overlooking the downtown sidewalk, and sip a Sapphire Martini. This next call is another great reason to find things to do in this little gem of a Southern town.

Check out this great Call to Artists for the Betsy Worden Memorial Artist Residency at the Emporium Center. There is no application fee, and you could end up with a solo show!

ARTIST in RESIDENCE: Emporium Center

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to announce availability of the next Betsy Worden Memorial Artist Residency at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville.

DEADLINE: Friday, March 11, 2011

ELIGIBILITY: Available to college students and other young and emerging artists, The Betsy Worden Memorial Artist Residency includes:

FREE and exclusive access to a 10’ x 10’ artist studio located in the Emporium Center;
Sponsored membership in the Arts & Culture Alliance for one year;
Display of at least one piece of artist’s new work in the public areas of the Emporium Center each month of the residency (beginning with the First Friday opening reception on April 1, 2011); and
Solo exhibition of artist’s new work in the Balcony gallery of the Emporium Center near the end of the residency period (September 2-30, 2011).

REQUIREMENTS: The resident artist is required to occupy the studio and be present to show new work each First Friday of the month, spend a significant amount of time creating work in the Emporium studio, and help hang monthly changing exhibits in the Emporium galleries if necessary. Artist may also offer curatorial input and be eligible for curatorial opportunities in programming gallery space.

The Emporium’s current Artist-in-Residence is Keegan Luttrell, a mixed media artist who graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2008 with a BFA in Art History and a Concentration in Photography. Originally from Knoxville, she has lived and worked in Baltimore, New York City, France, and Australia. In the past, she has shown in local Knoxville venues, as well as in Baltimore, Brooklyn, New York, Aix en Provence, and Austin. Her solo exhibition, “uproot”, is scheduled to run March 4-25, 2011 in the Balcony. “I have been so grateful for the opportunity to be the Artist-in-Residence at the Emporium,” says Luttrell. “The Residency has provided me with the space and time to grow artistically and challenge myself in ways I never thought I could.”

ABOUT BETSY WORDEN: An artist, teacher, and Knoxville Civic Leader, Betsy Worden was perhaps best known for her works in watercolor and weaving, and she contributed greatly to Knoxville’s visual arts community by teaching young ones cool easy things to draw and other numerous ways throughout her life. She received her BA in Fine Arts from the University of Tennessee and did post-graduate studies at Atlanta School of the Art, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and the University of Tennessee. A painter, tapestry weaver, and printmaker, she was a longtime instructor at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, and she taught watercolor classes for the Knoxville Museum of Art. A leader in the Knoxville arts community, Worden served on the boards of many arts organizations. She also co-founded the Community School of the Arts in Knoxville.

Applications must include resume, letter of recommendation, artist’s statement, and CD of digital images of artist’s work. Spiva Art Gallery

Missouri Southern State University’s Art Department is inviting artists via an Open Call to submit proposals for the campus Spiva Art Gallery. The Gallery’s Advisory Board selects works and collections for exhibition. The Gallery hosts approximately eight shows per year, including one or more group shows by local guilds or artist collectives, themed exhibits, and solo shows. We have a standing Call to Artists who wish to submit their works for consideration.

CALL for ENTRIES: Sugarloaf

My family is on a savings spree. We sat down the first week of the year and decided on goals for the year. Many of those goals require cash. Cash necessitates saving. Saving, in my house, means cutting the food budget. Grocery shopping is now preceeded by a menu and detailed grocery list and eating out has been cut to one sit-down meal and one fast-food meal a week. This next Call gives you an opportunity to plan ahead.

This Call for Entries is for the 13 Sugarloaf Fine Art & Crafts festivals. I don’t publish many festival calls, but Sugarloaf is among the country’s finest. Take a look, and find a festival for you…or enter them all.

CALL for ENTRIES: Sugarloaf Festivals

Sugarloaf Crafts Festival, one of the nation’s most popular and most recognized juried shows of contemporary crafts and fine art, is now accepting applications from artists for its 2011 shows.

MEDIA: Artists may apply for the 2011 shows in categories including ceramics and pottery, fiber and fashion, fine art, furniture, blown and leaded glass, leather, metalsmithing, photography and functional and decorative wood crafts. Sugarloaf is no longer accepting applications for jewelry artists for Spring 2011 shows. Jewelry remains open for Fall 2011.

ABOUT SUGARLOAF: Sugarloaf enters its 36th year among the most respected shows in the country. In 2010, nine of Sugarloaf’s 13 shows were ranked in the Top 200 nationally by Sunshine Artist magazine.

This past fall, attendance at the seven Sugarloaf shows increased by12%, and artists’ sales increased over 8%, totaling $9.7 million. Artists whose work is exhibited at Sugarloaf shows are jury-selected and are represented in the nation’s finest galleries, private collections, and museums.

EARTHY REWARDS

I love earthy foods. Give me grassy asparagus and a loamy merlot, and I’m a happy girl. However, just because something is earthy or natural doesn’t mean I want to eat it. I will pass on the lemongrass and tofu, but you can toss a little wheat germ in my pancakes, though. This Call will give you a chance to get up close and personal with nature…from the mundane to the outlandish.

Outlandish: Contemporary Depictions of Nature

Bedford Gallery exhibits the work of historic, modern, and contemporary artists. The Gallery is dedicated to providing the public with opportunities to learn about visual arts through public programs that are varied, accessible, challenging, and educational. Its mission is to provide exhibitions and other programs that both reflect and engage the diverse audiences of the entire Contra Costa region.

This national juried exhibition will look at landscape from all vantage points and all media, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, and mixed media. From the micro to the macro, artists can explore a tiny speck of a garden to a global view.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists in the United States, 18 years of age or older. Entries must be original work completed within the last three years.

MEDIA:
All media will be considered.

There are no size limitations for entries. Please include specific dimensions, exact weight (3D), and applicable installation instructions with your images for review by the juror. Bedford Gallery reserves the right not to accept exceptionally large or cumbersome pieces.

CALL for ENTRIES: International Juried Show

CARRYING A TORCH

As I have mentioned on so many occasions, I love kitchen gadgets. I love everything from 1940s egg scales to the idea of a torch for carmelizing creme brulee. However, I have to admit that lately my watching too many cooking shows has me itching to use liquid nitrogen in some way or the other…I hear it is the best way to get the smoothest ice cream. This next Call is an opportunity for you to show off your technology skills.

International Juried Show

Enter the 2011 juried competition for digital art and photography brought to you by the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art (LACDA).

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is international, open to all geographical locations.

MEDIA: All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable.

DEADLINE: February 15, 2011

NOTIFICATION: February 21, 2011

ENTRY FEE: Registration fee is $30 US for up to three images. Multiple entries permitted, additional $30 entry fee for each three images.

SUBMISSIONS: All entries must be made online.

AWARDS: The first prize winner receives 10 prints up to 44 x 60 inches on canvas or museum quality paper (approximately a $2,500-$3,000 value) to be shown in a solo exhibition in our main gallery from March 10-April 2, 2011. The show will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artist.

Second place prizes: Ten second place winners will receive one print of their work up to 24 x 36 inches ($150-$200 in value) to be included in upcoming group exhibits. The ten second place winners will be scheduled into a group shows within twelve months of announcement of winners. Consideration is given to placing these works in shows appropriate to their style, genre and/or content. These shows will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artists.

Special consideration will be given to all entrants for inclusion in future shows at LACDA. Many entrants from past competitions have already been included in their exhibits.

JURORS: Edward Robinson is the Associate Curator of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). He curated the Los Angeles presentation of New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape, co-curated The Sum of Myself: Photographic Self-Portraits from the Audrey and Sydney Collection, and curated the recent exhibition William Eggleston: Democratic Camera (Fall, 2010).

He contributes regularly to LACMA’s blog, Unframed, including a recent series of video interviews with LA-based photographers. He earned his PhD at Oxford University in the History of Art and Photography and his BA in Art History at Brown University. Formerly the Beaumont and Newhall Curatorial Fellow in the Dept. of Photography at MoMA, he initiated and organized over four years a number of exhibitions and programs. He has served as well as the editor of Blind Spot magazine, has published a number of articles on photographic history, and has taught at New York University and Yale University.

Rex Bruce is the founder and director of Los Angeles Center for Digital Art. He founded the digital program at Artists Television Access (San Francisco) for which he curated exhibits and created curriculum. He received his masters from SFSU in Interdisciplinary Art where he also taught and developed curriculum for many years. His work has been shown internationally for over twenty years.

Most recently he has emerged as a significant artist and organizer in the burgeoning Renaissance in downtown Los Angeles as well as becoming a leader in the exploding international scene revolving around art and technology.

I have made hundreds of grilled cheese sandwiches. I have entered hundreds of art shows. I have made hundreds of canapes and attended hundreds of opening night receptions. I believe that the 100 mark is to be celebrated. This blog will soon celebrate its 300th post. This next Call for Entries should put you in the mood to celebrate.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. One or two works may be submitted. Work must not have been previously shown at the CAFA or the Mystic Arts Center. Last year Pepe held the position of Professional in Residence in Art History at the University of New Haven, and this year she is teaching various Art History courses at the University of Hartford, Southern Connecticut State University, and Albertus Magnus College. She holds a Masters from Wesleyn University with a concentration in Art History, and she has done doctoral studies (ABD) at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Anne von Stuelpnagel is Director of Exhibitions at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut; Since 1995 she has been responsible for the design of the 12-14 exhibitions per year of the Museum; Having worked at the Bruce Museum since 1980, her responsibilities included art, history, anthropology, and science. She received her BFA from Blocherer School of Fine Art and Applied Sciences, in Munich, Germany with a Major in painting and a Minor in Interior Design. Anne initiated and has carried out, for many years, the Outdoor Art Show of the Bruce Museum. After settling in the United States, in 1977, she studied printmaking and has since worked primarily as a printmaker.

When you think of North Carolina, what food comes to mind? I instantly think vinegar-based barbeque; however, this blog has been awash with pit-smoked references lately. So, I turned to my friend Michelle, a fellow blogger and Foreign Service officer for a little help. She is getting her doctorate from UNC. She says the best sushi place ever is a little place called Akai Hana and just happens to be outside of Chapel Hill in Carrboro, NC. This next Call might end in a great sushi dinner if you play your cards right.

Juried Exhibitions Series

The Chapel Hill Public Arts Office invites artists to apply for the 2011 – 2012 Juried Exhibitions Series. Original two- and three-dimensional artwork by selected artists will be displayed in Chapel Hill Town Hall and possibly other Town cultural facilities beginning May 2011.

Selected artists will be invited to exhibit their work in small group shows of two or three artists for two-month exhibition periods. The Juried Exhibitions Series is promoted in the local media and through Public Arts Office announcements and press releases. Selected artists will be asked to provide specific information and deliver their work for installation at agreed upon times. Public Arts staff and contractors install the work for exhibition.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists creating original artwork that can be hung indoors or displayed in glass cases.

There is no fee to enter.

JURY PROCESS: An Artist Selection Committee comprising representatives of Chapel Hill Town Hall, the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Public Arts Office, and local artists will review all complete portfolios and select artists to participate in the 2011 – 2012 Juried Exhibitions Series. Selections are based on artistic excellence and the goal of exhibiting a variety of media. I love the hand-technique and the personal aspect of work in which you can see the artist’s hand. I don’t need or want perfection. I want to be amazed by talent and patience and thought and creativity. This month’s artist challenges me. AAAD is happy to feature the work of book carver Julia Feld. Feld’s work reminds all of the wonder found in books…words AND illustrations. So many people dismiss the work of illustrators. I find Feld’s work is entirely her own while at the same time, it celebrates the work of illustrators, past and present.

Julia Feld is a scientist and artist living and working in St. Louis. All pieces featured on her Holey Stokes! blog are her intricate creations and must be seen to be believed.

Feld has no formal art instruction and accidentally ended up as a book carver.

A few years back, she found a set of Funk and Wagnalls Encyclopedias in the free box outside a used book shop. “I didn’t know what I’d do with them but thought it was a pity that such a lovely set of books could end up in a dirty cardboard box in a parking lot, so I brought them home.”

“I really don’t remember what was going through my head the first time I thought to go at one with an exacto knife. I do what I do because I like reminding people that books are things of beauty and that pictures and diagrams aren’t just about the information they convey.”

There is a cult-like following of Julia Feld’s work online, and a popular myth that I see over and over is that she laser cuts her shapes and images. False. She hand cuts every shape.

“For some books, I carve through a page at a time, removing all the text and empty space and leaving only pictures and outlines. For others, I gut the entire contents and rebuild it from scratch. They all involve a ton of exact-o blades, tweezers, glue, and framing glass. I’ve tried using power tools, but haven’t been pleased with the outcomes.”

I enjoy asking artists about their terminology for their process and media. I find that it often gives me insight as to the frequent disconnect of an artist from the public perception of his or her work.

Altered books have a long-documented history in traditional art settings as mixed media, but I find that media are becoming more and more specific over time. Feld considers her work book carvings, but when I asked her for the school of art into which her work fit, she defers the questions to you, my loyal readers: “I am overwhelmed by the amount of research I’d have to do to answer this question properly. I like carving books because it draws attention to the aesthetic quality of objects that are usually valued primarily for their informational content. Gentle readers, using the comment section below, please share with me what school of art do you think this falls into!”

So, back to the armchair psychology of it all… Feld’s Favorite Food? Toast. No really… toast. I would NEVER think of asking an artist if they have a back-up plan just in case art doesn’t work out. I’m not your momma; you don’t need something to fall back on with me.
Nonetheless, Feld is prepared. “I want to open and operate a dining establishment called Julia’s Toasteraunt (maybe Julia’s Toastorium) where every table has a really nice toaster on it and you order big spreads of different kinds of breads and jams and cheeses and everyone feasts on toast. If someone wants to open a soup joint next store, I’d be open to that.” Editor’s Note: I will offer this blog and the transcripts of my interview with Julia Feld as evidence if you steal her idea, people.

I have seen a few too many1950s musicals. In high school my weekends often involved pork chops, sweet peas and mashed potatoes…and musicals like Holiday Inn, Easter Parade and Oklahoma. To this day when we play the license plate game in the car and I see an “Oklahoma” plate, we all break into song with “Oooooklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain.” Show your love for Oklahoma with this next Call…or at least your keen knack for research.

Check out this Call for Entries for Oklahoma Friendly sponsored Oklahoma Art Guild, and in part by Oklahoma Arts Council, IAO Gallery and the National Endowment of the Arts. It is a national juried show… don’t be fooled by the name.

CALL for ENTRIES:
Oklahoma Friendly

The Oklahoma Art Guild announces a Call for Entry to “Oklahoma Friendly 2011”. This show has an inviting range of media and styles that exemplify the friendly nature of Oklahoma.

ELIGIBILITY: This show is open to all artists residing in the US above the age of 18, members and non-members of OAG.

MEDIA: All media, 2 and 3-dimensional will be considered. No Video, or Performances.

DEADLINE: February 20, 2011

NOTIFICATION: March 1, 2011 by email

ENTRY FEE: Fee covers entry of 1-3 pieces. Member Fee: $25 and Non-member Fee: $35. Up to 3 additional images may be submitted online for $5.00 per image, members and non-member.

Tornado Alley: Abstracts and nonrepresentational

I would like to tell you that once a year I participate in some sort of thorough Spring cleaning, Winter spruce up, etc. But as recently as Monday I admitted that housekeeping in not my strong suit. I do, however, love annual traditions like Ribfest, Wingfest and the Chili Cook-off. Here’s another annual event that can add to your resume instead of adding to your waist line.

Check out this Call for Entries from the New Rochelle Council on the Arts for their 2011 Annual Juried Exhibit. The entry fee is only $15 for three images, and the sales commission is a miniscule 20%. Don’t miss this opportunity!

CALL for ENTRIES:
2011 Annual Juried Exhibit

ELIGIBILITY: All artists within the United States at any stage in their artistic careers are encouraged to submit CDs of work completed in the 2005 to 2010 calendar years to the New Rochelle Council on the Arts’ annual juried exhibition. Accepted work will be exhibited at Lumen Winter Gallery from March 1 to March 31, 2011. All work submitted must be available for exhibiting; substitutions will not be allowed.

MEDIA: All original two and three dimensional wall-hung work will be accepted for review; no free-standing works will be eligible for acceptance.

DEADLINE: Postmarked by January 28, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Emailed by Friday, February 11, 2011

ENTRY FEE: Free for NRCA members; $15.00 for a maximum of three (3) images (8×10 in, 300 dpi jpegs). This can be remitted through PayPal (click & scroll to bottom of page for PayPal link) or sent as a personal check or money order (no cash!) with the hard copy of your entry form, documents, and accompanying CD.

When paying via PayPal, please indicate that the payment is in regards to NRCA Annual Juried Exhibition. All checks and money orders should be made out to: The New Rochelle Council on the Arts.

SALES: Artwork can be offered for sale during the exhibit. The NRCA will retain a 20% commission on work sold during the exhibition. No changes in price will be allowed upon acceptance. Works not for sale should be listed NFS.

JURORS: Shervone Neckles – Artist, curator and educator, Neckles work investigates the historical events that have influenced the traditions that have and continues to shape Black Culture.

Neckles has exhibited throughout the United States including The Center for Book Arts, Gordon Parks Gallery at The College of New Rochelle, and Michael Steinberg Fine Art, all located in New York, NY; The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT; The Center for Paper and Book Arts in Columbia College, Chicago; and Chapman Gallery at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.

Scott Seaboldt – Artist, curator and educator, Seaboldt is co-founder of AS220 in Providence, RI, a curator of the biennial Ides of March exhibition at ABC No Rio in New York City, and an art instructor at New Rochelle High School.

Seaboldt focuses his artistic practice in drawing and painting. Seaboldt has exhibited throughout New York City, including Macy Gallery at Columbia University, Susan Burke Gallery, Chashama, and ABC No Rio.

Seaboldt also shows frequently throughout Westchester, including 3rd Rail Gallery, Backstreet Gallery, New Rochelle’s BID Gallery, 542 Gallery, Wildcliff Center for the Arts, Castle Gallery at The College of New Rochelle, Media Loft, Manor Club of Pelham and the Pelham Art Center.

Jessica Cioffoletti –Artist, curator and educator, Cioffoletti is the Associate Director of Arts in Education at ArtsWestchester and teaches painting and drawing to children and adults at Concordia Conservatory of Music and Art, Bronxville Adult Education and privately.

Cioffoletti also reviews theater as a freelance writer for New York Moves Magazine and is on the Board of Castle Gallery at The College of New Rochelle and Westchester Arc’s Gallery 265. Previously she has worked for the Rubin Museum, Pelham Art Center, Castle Gallery at The College of New Rochelle, and the Museum of Modern Art.

AWARDS: First Prize – $400.00, Second Prize – $200.00
