CALL for ENTRIES: STUDIO 300 Digital Art and Music Festival

The Byte Gallery is an interactive kiosk dedicated to exhibiting digital art, music, video, and other multimedia works by artists, dramatists, and musicians from around the world. Users control the kiosk with a touch interface, exploring and listening to works via a large digital display and headphones. Transylvania University is located in Lexington, Kentucky, USA.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: The Digital Print/Still Image category is for fixed/still images where digital technology as an essential part of the creative process. The Video Music category is for works that explore non-narrative abstraction with equal emphasis on electro-acoustic music/sound art and moving images. The video should be accompanied by stereo audio.

The Dramatic Video category is theatrical work of short video/film where digital technology is an essential part of the creative process. The video should be accompanied by stereo audio, unless intentionally silent. If the work includes sound, it must be stereo. The Animation category is for video that explore non-narrative abstraction with primary emphasis on moving images. Works may/may not include sound. If the work includes sound, must be stereo.

DEADLINE: Submissions must be received no later than April 15, 2012.

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee.

SUBMISSIONS: Submission is through email only—do not attach anything to the email, instead provide links to your application materials. Completed submissions will include: 1) web link to a pdf/text file of the application form (get the application form here); 2) web link to the submitted work (audio file, image file, movie file.. etc); 3) web link to a photo (image file) of the artist/composer/producer.

While watching a TV show about how salami is made, my son announced that eating the organs of an animal is wrong. However, when I explained all the things that his new belief would eliminate from his menu, he then asked, “Do they at least WASH the intestines first?” Hehehe. These days I prefer my animal organs in the form of chicken pate, but I will have to start keeping the ingredient list to myself, apparently. Art Inter/National is a celebration of artistic expression from all over the world. It’s an exhibition that displays how the space one occupies both influences and guides the creative process.

AWARDS: One artist will receive the Best of Show Award. This artist is awarded Box Heart “Artist of the Year” and receives their own Solo Exhibition in the 2013 Exhibition Year. This includes Gallery Representation with Box Heart Gallery.

JUROR: Kristen Miller Zohn is the Curator of Collections and Exhibitions for the Columbus Museum in Columbus, Georgia. Ms. Zohn has a MA in Art History from Florida State University and a BA in Art History from Salem College.

Zohn’s previous work was with Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Reynolda House Museum of American Art and Albany Museum of Art in Georgia. Ms. Miller Zohn served as Curator of Education at the Columbus Museum for six years before moving to her current position in 2007.

Zohn is a contributing author for American Art in the Columbus Museum: Painting, Sculpture and Decorative Arts and to the forthcoming The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture, Vol. 20, Art and Architecture.

AWARDS: Karen Beswick Founders Award $1,000; SCAA Award of Distinction $500, Four Awards of Excellence $250 each; and Four Awards of Merit $100 each; and additional Purchase Awards.

Genetically modified food scares the crap out of me. I understand, economically speaking, why food is modified. But it doesn’t matter how much disease-resistant, mutant corn you can produce if everyone has three heads and glows in the dark. Am I suggest that genetically-modified corn causes these symptoms? No. I am suggesting that none of us know WHAT the end result could be. I’m planting heirloom varieties in my patch in the back yard this year. Treasured

Treasured seeks to reveal the beauty and vulnerability of the endangered and the threatened. From disappearing plant and animal species, to vanishing languages, customs, and cultures, to threatened ecosystems, this exhibit will highlight the intricacies and fragility of precious and vanishing worlds.

The jury seeks artwork that examines these entities, with particular interest in pieces that highlight urgency through delicacy and severity through subtlety, as they honor the distinct beauty inherent to each.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to artists age 18 and older working in the U.S.

MEDIA: All media types are welcome; small to large scale; indoors and outdoors.

DEADLINE:
March 31, 2012

NOTIFICATION:
Via email on or before April 16, 2012

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a $25 non-refundable entry fee for up to four entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card. Each entry must be submitted with three images of the artwork, including one overall view of the artwork, one detail shot, and one installation shot. There is a returned check fee of $25.

JUROR: Treasured will be juried by a 1-2 member panel.

AWARDS: Annmarie will present cash awards to outstanding work. Jurors will review installed works (not application images) for award selection. If possible, selection will occur prior to the exhibit opening and awards will be presented at the opening reception. Award amounts are contingent upon sponsorship; typically there are at least three awards ranging from $250-$750 each. All award winning artists will receive an invitation for a solo or group show.

SALES: Works selected for exhibition cannot be removed before the end of the exhibition. Should a sale resulting from the exhibition occur, Annmarie will retain a 40% commission of the listed sale price.

Open to Interpretation is a juried book competition of photography, poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. Each book begins with a themed call for photos. The chosen photos become the literary inspiration for the writers’ submissions. A book is created that matches each winning photo with two stories or poems that offer different interpretations of the image. The unique collaboration adds new dimensions to both the photos and the written word.

JUROR: George Slade has provided fine photographic artists and their audiences with insightful interpretation and curatorial expertise in exhibitions, classes, writings, lectures, and face-to-face exchanges for over 25 years.

Formerly the artistic director of Minnesota Center for Photography, the director of the McKnight Artist Fellowships for Photographers Program, and recently the curator at the Photographic Resource Center in Boston, Slade is a veteran presence at portfolio review events like Fotofest, Photolucida, Critical Mass, PhotoNOLA, and the Society for Photographic Education’s regional and national conferences.

Slade’s writings and reviews appear extensively in print and online; some may be found at his web site, re:photographica. He lives in Minneapolis with his partner Stephanie and their children.

Between the last light of day and the first rays of dawn, the world as we normally see it transforms to one in which nightclubs, all-night stores, third shift workers, and nocturnal wildlife take center stage. Spaces abuzz with activity during the day become quiet and desolate, and artificial light transforms mundane spaces into something almost magical. Photographers who work at night experience a nocturnal world through which most sleep.

The perception of night is different for each photographer. For some, the darkness can present a time for reflection and repose, for others, the fear of the unknown instills feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. For Between Dusk and Dawn, The Kiernan Gallery seeks images that explore the night or other darkness visually, metaphorically, and emotionally.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All photographic media are encouraged.

DEADLINE: March 30, 2012

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of accepted work via email approximately eight days after the submission deadline.

ENTRY FEE: $25 for the first 5 images and $5 each add’l image (up to 10 images).

JUROR: Brie Castell is the owner and chief curator of Castell Photography, one of the south’s finest galleries specializing in contemporary photo-based media in Asheville, NC. Castell works with established and emerging artists from around the globe for exhibition and representation, and brings to Asheville leading authorities in the field of photography for educational programming. Castell has also been working as a photo-based artist for 12 years, has exhibited extensively around the country, and in numerous public and private collections. Castell received her MFA from East Carolina University, and currently teaches photography at Brevard College.

AWARDS: For this exhibition, juror Brie Castell will select up to 30 images for display in the main gallery, and up to an additional 40 to be included in the online gallery. All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice award will also be announced.

SALES: Artists exhibiting at the gallery may offer their work for sale. The Kiernan Gallery retains 30% of the sale price as commission.

With ten years behind them, they have grown both nostalgic for the journeys they’ve been on and full of anticipation for what lies ahead. They look for art that is a sign post providing guidance for a unique place and time on your travels.

ELIGIBILITY: The show is open to artists 18 years and older.

MEDIA: 2 and 3 dimensional art executed within two years of entry date and not previously been displayed in the library.

DEADLINE: May 31, 2012

NOTIFICATION: July 31, 2012

ENTRY FEE: Entry fee is $35. Checks payable to the Northbrook Public Library. A maximum of 3 entries per artist fee will be judged.

JURY PROCESS: Artists should be cognizant that the exhibition is open to the general public and artwork must be viewable for all ages. Pieces will be judged on artistic quality and execution as well as thematic relevance. Artists should consider the theme, “Journeys”.

SALES & COMMISSION: The NPL does NOT charge a commission for show participation. All sales inquires will be referred to the artists. Contact information, provided by the artist, will be listed in the online and printed show catalog to facilitate sales. The only sale to be handled by the NPL will be the purchase of the first-place award winner.

AWARDS: One (1) $2000 purchase prize, one (1) second place cash award of $1000, one (1) third place cash award of $500, and two (2) Viewer’s Choice cash awards of $200.

As I have mentioned on so many occasions, I love kitchen gadgets. But, with my recent move, I have realized that there are some specialized gadgets that serve no real purpose. I own a CoCoMotion. Yep, it looks a little like a blender but it is more like a margarita machine in reverse…it makes hot chocolate. And, while the value of having hot chocolate at the perfect temperature to prevent the scalding of your tongue is important. There have to be limits. Enter the 2012 juried competition for digital art and photography brought to you by the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art (LACDA).

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is international, open to all geographical locations.

MEDIA: All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable.

DEADLINE: March 26, 2012

NOTIFICATION: April 2, 2012

ENTRY FEE: Registration fee is $30 US for up to three images. Multiple entries permitted, additional $30 entry fee for each three images.

SUBMISSIONS: All entries must be made online.

JURORS: Nancy Meyer, LACMA, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, L.A. County Museum of Art and Rex Bruce, LACDA, Director and Senior Curator, L.A. Center for Digital Art.

AWARDS: The selected winner receives 10 prints up to 44×60 inches on museum quality paper (approximately a $2,500-$3,000 value) to be shown in a solo exhibition in our main gallery. The show will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artist.

2nd Place: Ten 2nd place winners will receive one print of their work up to 24×36 inches ($150-$200 in value) to be included in upcoming group exhibits. 2nd place winners will be scheduled into a group shows within 12 months of announcement of winners. Consideration is given to placing these works in shows appropriate to their style, genre and/or content. These shows will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artists.

Special consideration will be given to all entrants for inclusion in future shows at LACDA. Many entrants from past competitions have been included in our exhibits.
