My grandmother was addicted to candy. She would stock up near the candy-laden holidays Easter, Halloween and Christmas, and try to get it eaten at a faster rate than it would solidify in a solid block of colored sugar.  So, it wasn’t her sweet grandmotherly instinct to push candy on me at every occasion; it was stock rotation, ha. After she died, I could have started a candy store with the volume of candy in her kitchen. The people with whom I eat most often have lots of food allergies –milk, shellfish, wheat.  So how does a food co-exist with food allergies?  The secret is parallel thinking.  For example, I need to make chili paste for Thai dishes, but my husband is deathly allergic to shellfish.  Who might love Thai food, but naturally wouldn’t eat shrimp?  Vegetarians.  Vegetarian chili paste is made with shiitake mushrooms as the substitute for shrimp. ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: 2 Dimensional work (photography, digital, collage, drawing, painting, etc.)

DEADLINE: October 15, 2018

NOTIFICATION: If selected for inclusion in the exhibit, you will be notified by email by late December. Due to the volume of submissions, only artists with entries selected for display will be notified individually. All winning entries will be posted on the website by early January.

ENTRY FEE: None

AWARDS: A total of $3,000 USD will be presented in the form of three separate awards – $1,000 each for “Best-in-Show Adult;” “Best-in-Show Student;” and the “People’s Choice.”

JURY PROCESS: Both “Best-in-Show” awards will be granted by a three-judge panel of art professionals. The “People’s Choice” award will be determined by visitors to the exhibits.

JUROR:  Kaly Scheller-Barrett is a visual artist and secret poet hailing originally from Bavaria. Drawing heavily from her extensive training in craft technique, Kaly’s work attempts to blur the boundaries between fine art and craft practices, asking the viewer to un- and re-frame their preconceptions of material. Kaly recently completed an MFA in Sculpture at California College of the Arts where she taught Craft Theory and is currently the Associate Director of Hashimoto Contemporary.

AWARDS:  Artists selected by the guest juror will receive a 2-page spread including a brief bio, website, and 2 images in print and digital formats. Published artists will receive a complimentary digital issue and will be listed on Create! Magazine’s website/social media & will be listed with images, details and information on theirr website/social media for life. All featured artists will automatically be considered for any upcoming curatorial projects & exhibitions organized by the Create! team.

The composition elements of the work must rely on form, color, action, lines, marks, and texture to create a purely abstract work that engages the viewer and draws them into the intention of the artist’s work.”

I remember chasing the ice cream truck and cycling away, post chase, peeling the paper away from my treasure with both hands and trying not to crash into a parked car or a jay-walking pedestrian.  In my current neighborhood, the roads are only two lanes, the tourist traffic is crazy, and there aren’t any kids on bicycles –or ice cream trucks.  I wonder if I can still ride.  Hmmm.  This next call is all about the bicycle or cycling.  I love the memories this theme conjures…

He served as director of the Watts Towers Arts Center from 1993 – 2002 and the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery from 2004 – 2010. Greenfield’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and internationally. His work deals primarily with the African American experience and in recent years has focused on the effects of stereotypes and racial politics on American culture. 

AWARDS:  More than $8,500 will be awarded, including three $1,000 Awards of Excellence.
