have some CANDY

My grandmother was addicted to candy. She would stock up near the candy-laden holidays Easter, Halloween and Christmas, and try to get it eaten at a faster rate than it would solidify in a solid block of colored sugar.  So, it wasn’t her sweet grandmotherly instinct to push candy on me at every occasion; it was stock rotation, ha. After she died, I could have started a candy store with the volume of candy in her kitchen. This Call is a chance for you to celebrate the life of someone who has passed from the physical world.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Embracing our Differences 2019

hold the SHRIMP

The people with whom I eat most often have lots of food allergies –milk, shellfish, wheat.  So how does a food co-exist with food allergies?  The secret is parallel thinking.  For example, I need to make chili paste for Thai dishes, but my husband is deathly allergic to shellfish.  Who might love Thai food, but naturally wouldn’t eat shrimp?  Vegetarians.  Vegetarian chili paste is made with shiitake mushrooms as the substitute for shrimp. Problem solved.  This next Call is about coexistence, diversity & inclusion on a much larger scale.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Drawing 2018

the EGGY truth

Sometimes you just need a win.  In the kitchen, my win is usually an egg dish.  I think of them as the basics — hard boiled, frittata, omelette, quiche.  The skills used to make those four egg dishes include many of the fundamentals for cooking well.  Drawing is a fundamental that helps support every other media pursuit for me from painting to photography, even fiber arts.  This next Call wants to see YOUR drawing.  Investigate…

something SALAD

For most people, the concept of salad is abstract at best –egg, chef, Caesar, Cobb, chicken.  Something loosely defined by intent but not really definable.  You can’t order a salad & know what you’ll get because everyone brings their own meaning to “salad”.  Lately it always means spinach, mushrooms, strawberries & feta, but my mother jumps directly to the three bean variety.  This next Call is waiting for what you will bring to abstract.  Don’t miss your chance…

“. . . the brain mirrors the expanse of the entire cosmos… and beyond. Each moment is unique. Each moment is identical.” Gabrielle Shannon

For most of my life I felt I had a good handle on people as a species –essentially good & well-intentioned but deeply flawed.  But the past few years have opened my eyes to my own bias & rocked my faith in good intentions.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Gabrielle Shannon, reminds me that the world is bigger than ourselves, bigger than our experience.  Check our her full statement!

pushups POPS

I remember chasing the ice cream truck and cycling away, post chase, peeling the paper away from my treasure with both hands and trying not to crash into a parked car or a jay-walking pedestrian.  In my current neighborhood, the roads are only two lanes, the tourist traffic is crazy, and there aren’t any kids on bicycles –or ice cream trucks.  I wonder if I can still ride.  Hmmm.  This next call is all about the bicycle or cycling.  I love the memories this theme conjures…
