When I think of salt water taffy, I think of the mountains. Odd, eh? I suspect that salt water taffy got its start on seaside boardwalks, but it seems every small mountain town has a great little store front that lets you watch taffy being made. I know that here in Gatlinburg, there is more than one. I wonder if Blue Ridge, GA (home of this Call) has a taffy shop. Sounds like a great reason to attend the reception…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Southern Appalachian Artist Guild for their Annual National Juried Show which will be exhbiited in the Richard Low Evans Gallery in Blue Ridge, GA, one of “America’s Top Art Communities.” I know that discussing art sales is like talking about religion or politics in polite company (in bad taste), but I will say it anyway… this could be a great opportunity to sell some artwork.

CALL for ART ENTRIES: National Juried Show

You are cordially invited to enter the annual National Juried Show sponsored by the Southern Appalachian Artist Guild (The Guild). The show will be juried by Asheville, NC gallery owner John Cram. Blue Ridge, GA is located in the beautiful north Georgia mountains. The show will run in the peak visitor months of October and November attracting interest from the surrounding metropolitan areas of Atlanta, Asheville, Chattanooga and Knoxville. Art works selected by the juror will be displayed in the Richard Low Evans Gallery of the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association (The Art Center) in Blue Ridge, Georgia.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists who are residents of the United States are invited to participate in a juried exhibition.

MEDIA: Mixed Media, Oil or acrylic, Pastel framed, Three-Dimensional art, Water media framed, Photography framed, Computer art framed, All Other: including drawing, color pencil, pen and ink, but excluding all print reproductions (including Gicleé).

DEADLINE: July 31, 2011

NOTIFICATION: August 28, 2011

ENTRY FEE: $35 for up to three entries for non-members and $30 for Guild members. Check or money order should be included with entry form, payable to Southern Appalachian Artist Guild or SAAG.

JUROR: John Cram has pursued his dream for the past 35 years through the creation of four distinctive galleries in the Asheville, NC area. Blue Spiral 1, New Morning Gallery and Bellagio have paced the recognition of Asheville as a vital center of the arts. Mr. Cram’s name is synonymous with Asheville’s renaissance. His eye for art is unquestioned and apparent in his galleries and in the vision he has helped breathe into the Asheville art environment.

AWARDS: $5000 in prize money will be awarded.

SALES: A commission of 35% (30% for Guild members) will be retained by The Art Center for all work sold during the course of the show.

I think in food cliches. People like me are the reason pumpkin pie candles are sold scores of people longing for fall. And, when I think of Colorado, I think of hot chocolate after skiing. Hot chocolate after skiing is lovely, but Colorado is home to some of the finest restaurants in the US. They deserve more consideration that my cliched hot chocolate. I apologize. My favorite Wilton offset spatula for icing cakes has become my best palatte knife. And back before I cut off all my hair for ease and convenience, I had a favorite set of red and black enameled chopsticks that made fabulous hair sticks. Found Objects: (According to The Smithsonian Institution) “Found art, more commonly called found objects — in French, objet trouve — is a term used to describe art created from common objects not normally considered to be artistic. The idea behind found art is that the piece of art derives its significance from the context into which it is put. Found Art blurs the traditional lines of what is art and questions the very nature of art itself. Found objects are often used by artists and may include the repurposing of street signs, license plates, or bottle caps, use of recycled paper, or imaginative application of household items.”

ELIGIBILITY: All artists residing in the United States and Canada

MEDIA: The exhibition is held to showcase the works of fine art that have incorporated at least one or more found objects into their presentation. Any two or three dimensional submission following exhibition guidelines will be considered by the juror.

DEADLINE: August 24, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Sept. 23, 2011

ENTRY FEE: A maximum of 6 original works created within the past 3 years may be entered. 1 or 2 entries $35 (MFA members $20). Additional four entries $5 each. Entry fees are non-refundable.

JUROR: Janet Maher has been a working artist for thirty-five years, and is an Associate Professor of Art at Loyola University Maryland. She works in a wide range of mixed media, and teaches courses that reflect her interests, such as: Collage, Assemblage and the Found Object; Book Arts and Artist Books; Digital Mixed Media; Printmaking (Relief, Intaglio, Screenprint, Lithography and Alternative Processes), as well as Drawing and Two-Dimensional Design. She has exhibited widely and her work is in numerous public and private collections.

AWARDS: Cash awards total $1000. Contributors and recipients will be listed in the exhibition catalog.

FREAKY FOOD

Genetically modified and manipulated food freaks me out. I eat it regularly–not because I choose to, but because disclosure is not required. What freaks me out is the unknown end result. Maybe nothing is wrong with GM food, but shouldn’t we figure that out before we start stuffing it in everything? You might be shocked by how much of the raw foods we eat are manipulated, and the processed foods we eat are packed as well. This next Call puts a lovely spin on the modified and manipulated… and stays away from my food, thank-you-very-much.

Check out this Call for Entries for Manipulated from Castell Photography in Asheville, NC! The entry fee is only $25 for 3 images, and this is an excellent opportunity for photographers to push their boundaries a little. Take a closer look…

CALL for ART ENTRIES: Manipulated

“Manipulated” is an open call for entries of photo-based works which have been altered by the artist’s physical hand at any point in the process of its creation.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: All content and photographic media is acceptable — alternative processes, traditional black and white, and/or digital methods, as long as the actual hand of the artist has been employed to manipulate either the negative, the print, or both. Images which have been altered using digital methods are welcome, but only when utilized in addition to physical hand manipulation.

DEADLINE: September 4, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Entrants will be notified via email on September 14th only if accepted. A list of accepted artists will also be posted on their website. Additionally, they will provide additional shipping and exhibition details upon acceptance.

ENTRY FEE: $25 for first 3 images and $10 for each additional. Payments accepted: check, money order, or credit card through PayPal (no PayPal acct required). To pay with your cc please go to their web site and click the information tab, then click Manipulated: Call for entries.

JUROR: Ariel Shanberg was appointed executive director of The Center for Photography at Woodstock in the fall of 2003. As the fourth executive director in the organization’s history, Shanberg sets and oversees the CPW’s artistic mission and creative offerings, working with the staff and Board to ensure its historic & continued excellence.

AWARDS: Juror’s Choice Award will receive $200, a feature on their gallery blog, as well as an article in their monthly newsletter following the exhibition. One Directors Choice Award will also be awarded by gallery director Heidi Gruner, and will be awarded a subscription to Aperture Magazine as well as a feature on their gallery blog.

SALES: All work must be available for sale. The gallery receives a commission of 50% of sale before taxes, and the artist will receive 50%. All payments to artists will be in the form of a check and mailed after 30 days of the close of the show.

I will eat snails, but peaches give me the willies. Illogical, I know. It is about the fur. I eat kiwi and coconut because it is clear they are meant to be peeled. But fresh peaches have human-like hair growing that peeling seems a little cannibalistic. I hear your snickering; don’t judge me. I’ll eat my peaches canned or just settle for nectarines, thank-you-very-much. This next Call is all about the fur… in a good way. Take a look!

Check out this Call for Entries from White Flag Projects (St. Louis, MO) for Fur Elise, an artshow celebrating companion animals. This show will be a little out there for some of you, but White Flag Projects is known for being on the edge… this is no exception. Don’t miss this all hung opportunity!

Fur Elise

White Flag Projects, a not-for-profit arts institution, invites all companion animals and their guardians to display objects crafted from collected fur brushings as part of Für Elise, a special display of fur objects to be held August 13 through 22, 2011. Für Elise will open with a free public reception for companion animals and their guardians Saturday afternoon, August 13 from 1-3
PM. All guardians will receive a complimentary Für Elise poster including their companion animal’s name.

ELIGIBILITY: All entries that meet the requirements will be accepted for display.

MEDIA: Entries must be comprised of at least 90% collected fur brushings. Entries containing excessive secondary materials will not be accepted.

Entries must be crafted from the fur of living cats, dogs, and other companion animals – pelts, hides, or artificial fur will not be accepted. Entries may be 2 or 3 dimensional. Entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form. Entries will be credited exclusively to the companion animal.

DEADLINE: Mailed entries must be received no later than August 10, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee, but you will have to pay shipping.

CALL for ENTRIES: Embracing our Differences

Embracing Our Differences invites artists, photographers, professionals, amateurs, teachers and students to participate in its annual visual art exhibit celebrating diversity. The Embracing Our Differences exhibit will be displayed throughout the months of April and May 2012 at Island Park along Sarasota’s beautiful bayfront.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists. National and international submissions are encouraged.

DEADLINE:
January 9th, 2012

ENTRY FEE:
There is no entry fee.

45 artists will be selected for the exhibit.

Since 2004, the exhibit has been viewed by more than 850,000 visitors. The exhibit will contain 39 billboard-sized (16 feet wide by 12 1/2 feet high) images of the selected artworks. In the judges’ discretion, an additional six “honorable mention” selections may be made.

SELECTION PROCESS: Final selections will be chosen based on artistic excellence in reflection of the theme “Embracing Our Differences.”

The art-work will also be evaluated on how effectively it will read outdoors when enlarged to billboard size – 16′ wide by 12.5′ high.

Artists are encouraged to use
bold saturated colors and strong lines.

Final selections will be made by a 3-judge panel of professional artists, curators and art professionals.

AWARDS: A total of $3,000.00 in awards will be presented.

I talk a good food game. My culinary tastes seem brave to some, but they aren’t really. I know what I like, but I’m a chicken about trying some stuff just like you. I cannot bring myself to even try something called head cheese. I get that it is mainly just meat in aspic, but it sounds gross and doesn’t win huge points with me for aesthetics either. One of you should take a picture of yourself eating head cheese and send it to me. The first one that does will get a little ad in the side bar for a couple of months. Make it a good picture though… ’cause I WILL publish it before you get your ad. I wonder if head cheese is an eligible topic for this next Call for Entries. Take a look…

SlowArt Productions presents the annual group thematic exhibition, A Show of Heads. The exhibition will be held at the Limner Gallery from November 3 – 27, 2011.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible.

THEME: This exhibition will include all interpretations and portrayals of the human head, from the traditional to the abstract and conceptual. All visions of the The Head, including partial and multiple heads, will be reviewed and considered.

DEADLINE: Entries must be submitted via email by August 31, 2011.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance no later than September 21, 2011. Results will be posted on or before this date at: http://www.slowart.com/results. Notification will be made via email and by posting on the results page. All artists who provide a working email address will be notified via email, if no email is provided, artists will be notified via postal mail only if accepted to exhibit. Type your email address clearly, if a mistake is made you will not be notified.

ENTRY FEE: There is a $35.00 entry fee for one to four artworks entered, presentation is by digital JPG image files. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional artwork above four. Details of 2D artwork count as an additional artwork. Sculptors may provide one additional view per artwork without cost. Artists accepted to exhibit will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments by credit card at time of entry using PayPal, or check or money order payable to SlowArt Productions.

AWARDS: Winning artists will be featured in a group exhibition at the Limner Gallery, November 3 – 27, 2011. The exhibition will also be displayed on the Limner Gallery web site. One artist will be awarded a two page display in Direct Art Volume #19, Fall 2012 issue. Two artists will be awarded a single page display.
