IN THE DOG HOUSE

The first food that I truly remember eating was a hot dog topped with American cheese. I was around three years old, and it was called an “Angel Riding Horseback.” Priceless. It came from a restaurant in the Clearwater, Florida area that specialized in hot dogs. Hundreds of hot dogs. If anyone can tell me the name, I’d be thrilled to know. This next call has nothing to do with hotdogs, but you do have to be 40 to enter (or a member of The Haggus Society). And against my better judgement, I am willing to publicly admit that I am drawing close to my 40th birthday. It makes me reminisce… about food. Ridiculous? Certainly. Deal with it.

Edges & Curves, Nothing In Between attempts to bust the myth that the older creative has lost her or his edge.

In a youth oriented society, the conventional wisdom is that the younger artist is the risk taker and rule breaker. And while those who would follow conventional wisdom believe we soften as we get older, there are those who actually hone their edges to craft a message with more bite and risk because of their station in life.

ELIGIBILITY: This event is open to any artist 40 years and older.

While I have never developed a preference for raw oysters (it is a texture, not taste, issue), I will take them steamed or fried, cajun or asian, and even in my Thanksgiving stuffing. I will eventually forgive my husband for developing an allergy to shellfish, but you’re gonna have to give me a little time with that one. For the outdoor aficionado, what first started as an obsession for see-saws, swing sets, slides, jungle gyms, and sandboxes, has since turned into an instinctive passion for adventure by means of a different type of playground — the natural playground.

Whether by trail, rock, water, snow or air, where has your obsession for adventure taken you? What’s your photographic definition of Living the Dream? Skiing or snowboarding in the Alps or at your local hill? Climbing in Thailand or at the backyard crag? Mountain Biking in British Columbia or on your neighborhood trails? Surfing pristine Tahiti barrels or a quiet home break? Kayaking through Patagonia or along your favorite coastline?

JUROR: Corey Rich is a photographer, Filmmaker & Principal at Aurora Photos and one of the world’s most recognized adventure and outdoor lifestyle visual storytellers. He has captured stunning still photos and video on a wide array of assignments, including rock climbing in India, ultra-marathon racing in the Sahara Desert of Morocco, freight train hopping in the American West, and snowboarding in Papua New Guinea. Today, much of his time goes into capturing both still images and video for the creation of multimedia projects for commercial and editorial clients.

As Vice President and co-owner of Aurora Photos, Rich was the driving force behind founding Aurora’s Outdoor Collection, which is the world’s leading brand of outdoor adventure and outdoor lifestyle photography. Additionally, Rich is a Nikon evangelist and a member of the SanDisk Extreme Team. His first book, My Favorite Place: Great Athletes In The Great Outdoors, was published by Chronicle Books.

Justin Gural is a marketing and communications freelancer with photography playing a prominent role throughout his commercial and editorial work. He approached the Darkroom Gallery in the Fall of 2010, proposing to prepare and curate a juried gallery exhibit focusing on sports, adventure, travel and the outdoor lifestyle. A concept that relates directly with the active, local Vermont community, as well as the global adventure landscape.

As founder and director of Cortex Marketing Network, a full-service marketing and communications agency staffed by an influential group of freelancing professionals, Gural leads the network specializing in integrated brand strategy, design and creative, photo/video production, public relations and copywriting, and event management.

Gural also leads the editorial team at VentureThere.com, USA Today’s adventure sports, active travel and outdoor lifestyle website. He directs the website’s content flow, manages photography, writes and edits editorial features, as well as travels to unique destinations while documenting the adventure. He will be covering this exhibit on behalf of VentureThere.com once it’s underway, including photo galleries of selected submissions as well as a “Viewfinder” photographer profile of the winning photographer.

PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be 18+ years old. If younger, a guardian may submit for you.

Ownership: All photos must have been taken by the entrant. If you are a guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear on the submission.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on the Dark Room Gallery website or

2. Sent via email to submissions (at) VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something to go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to 3 images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Add’l images $5 US per image.

I appreciate simple food. Somedays there is nothing more comforting than a roasted chicken; however, I am baffled by the new wave of “5 ingredient” cookbooks. I appreciate that sometimes you only HAVE five ingredients. But a whole cookbook of 5 ingredient dishes? I use olive oil, garlic, parsley and cracked black pepper in almost everything…that only leaves me one additional ingredient. How about giving me 12 ingredients? JUROR: Amalia Pizzardi was born in Italy, where she studied Art and Semiology at the University of Bologna with Umberto Eco and received a PhD in Social Sciences. She organized the seventh and eighth editions of the Lyric and Cultural Festival “Valle d’Itria” presenting “Le jeu de l’amour et du hasar” by Marivaux and “Turandot” by F.Busoni, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Tourism and commissioned by the Paolo Grassi Foundation.

When living in Mexico, Dr. Pizzardi became firmly convinced that Art is a vehicle for social change, so she organized artistic events within the framework of cultural interchanges with other countries, including Brazil, Colombia, Finland, France, Guatemala, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Uruguay and the United States. She has participated for years as a juror in competitions and artistic events organized by CNN, the Red Cross Art Auction and Juannio, Latin American Masters’ Auction.

Amalia is the Founder and Director of the art gallery “The Gallery Art & Design,” dedicated principally to Latin American art on the vanguard, which has had a presence in Mexico, Italy and the United States; participating in international art fairs such as ArtMiami y MiArt in Milan. She is also the Founder and President of “Colors of Life,” a non-profit that organizes each year an International Photo Competition to support various charitable causes.

AWARDS: Cash and prizes up to $1000 will be awarded solely at the discretion of the exhibition juror. Recognition of work by Dr. Pizzardi may also be designated to the extent she deems appropriate. These designations may not include a cash prize. Also, 12 12 Gallery Director, Martin McFadden, will award a Director’s Choice Award.

Seafood?

I long to live off the grid, both for the consumption of energy resources AND for culinary purposes. I am not the greenest or environmentally conscious person that ever lived. My family and I do what we can. But, we long to live off the grid via solar power, cistern water collection and home-grown food. We want a life free of debt for electricity, water and groceries. I haven’t figured out how to tackle the seafood and cell phone issue, but I stand in awe of at least the idea of depending solely on nature for survival. When I think of Georgia, I start craving lobster bisque. Yes, I know that Georgia is the Peach State, but as I have mentioned before… I have peach issues. Georgia conjures images of trips to Savannah with my mother for glorious lunches at the River House of Caesar salad made fresh at our table, rich and creamy lobster bisque, and a huge slice of pecan pies. You can’t touch that with peaches. So this next Call is over 250 miles from Savannah, but it is still Georgia. If you can’t find the bisque while at the opening, pecan pie can’t be far away…

The National Juried Exhibition promotes an appreciation of the visual arts, enables artists to exhibit their works and allows local citizens to enjoy a wide variety high-quality art from around the country. Since 1986, the Cultural Arts Center, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has presented hundreds of exhibitions of works by more than 1,500 artists.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years old or older residing in the US

MEDIA: Original paintings, sculpture, hand-pulled prints, drawings, photography developed by the artists, fiber and original glass creations. Film, video and crafts developed from molds or kits are not eligible. Copies will not be accepted.

JUROR: Angela Nichols, Director of Education and Public Programs at the Hudgens Center for the Arts in Duluth, has been managing its multifaceted arts education department, overseeing its visual arts programming, and overseeing its collections since 2009.

During her short tenure there, the Hudgens introduced the largest and perhaps most prestigious award to an individual visual artist ever given in Georgia. Before taking her current position, she previously served as the Visual Arts Curator at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center from 2004 until 2008.

AWARDS: Purchase Award Up to $1,000, First Place $500, Second Place $300, Third Place $200, Two Honorable Mentions $100, Two artists from the exhibition will be selected for solo shows during the next three years at the CAC.

SALES: Sales will be encouraged; 25% commission will be taken on all work sold with the exception of the purchase award.

One Picture is worth a thousand words is a common belief that information can be conveyed more accurately and efficiently by images than words. And the power of narrative, or story telling is at the foundation of much of photography. Photograhers are creating complex and descriptive moments in time. Contemporary photographers are crafting and documenting new forms of a visual short story.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to all photographers world wide, both amateur and professional.

MEDIA: Photography. Black Box will provide all framing, matting and printing for our exhibitions. The photographers who are selected into the exhibition by the juror will provide a high resolution Tiff file for our gallery to print for the exhibition. Black Box covers all printing and framing costs. Other arrangements can be accomodated, if artist wants to send in a print.

JUROR: Holly Andres calls on the rich visual history of film and narrative photography in her works, often citing personal and fictitious memories of childhood.

Andres coordination of rich, stylized color palettes, elaborate sets, vintage wardrobes and dramatic lighting recall Hitchcock thrillers, fashion photography and tableau photographers like Gregory Crewdson, Jeff Wall, Annie Liebowitz, Larry Sultan and Cindy Sherman. Her work explores elliptical narratives, visually descriptive storytelling and constructed fantasy.

AWARDS: This exhibition will have 20 photographers included by the juror.

SALES: Black Box Gallery takes a 50% commission on all sales, 50% goes to the photographer. If artist prefers the print does not have to be for sale.

Am I still the only one that wonders what their food portrait would be? I don’t think so anymore. After my last posting of that questions, I got lots of replies with your food portrait match. My favorite came from a youth hostel in Europe…sardines. Quarters must be tight. Sardines are glorious in Caesar salad, make delightful sushi and melt in your mouth on pizza. “We’re looking for something beyond the traditional portrait – more than just a eloquently captured face. We’re looking for uncanny, parody, distortions, subtle suggestions and in-your-face implications. For “Persona” we’re looking for portraits devised outside the box (or in one, might also be applicable in certain circumstances!) – we want to see the characters you’ve captured.

“There can more to a superb portrait than a superb likeness of an individual a the testimony to their soul can be visioned way beyond the eyes. How much can you tell us about a person with just one image? Their life story? Perhaps. How did you show the idiosyncrasies, quirks, that make your sitters both physically and emotionally, individuals? We can’t wait to fill our gallery walls with a newly visioned kind of face – portrait as character and caricature.”
JUROR: The portraits of Chris Buck have been surprising us, making us laugh, causing us to ask questions, and inspiring us to think outside of the box for years. His brand of image making (over two decades worth) infuses wit with uncommon gesture and implied meaning. He tells more than a story – he creates tales (sometimes through pure expression). Chris was the first recipient for the Arnold Newman Portrait Prize (2007), which we think he so rightfully deserved! Sometimes it takes just a pinch of an ingredient to make a dish complete. Have you ever tasted something delectable and said, “What IS that flavor?” I have theories of my own including nutmeg in diet Coke. But not all special ingredients are a secret. Its goals are to bring together the works of serious contemporary artists that do not simply duplicate traditional representations; to establish a continuum with past generations of Yosemite artists; and to help re-establish visual art as a major interpretive medium of the landscape and a stimulus to the protection of the environment.

Historically, the arts have played a very important role in the establishment of our State and National Parks. It is the hope of Yosemite Renaissance that they can be just as important in future efforts to preserve and protect that heritage.

ELIGIBILITY: The Yosemite Renaissance XXVII competition is open to all living artists. Subject matter is limited to recent works on the landscape, environment, wildlife and people of Yosemite or the environment of the Sierra. Both representational and non-representational submissions are accepted.

MEDIA: Original artwork may be in any medium. Size is limited to works that can be shipped in containers not exceeding maximum U.P.S. dimensions of 130 inches, length and girth combined. Triptychs or other multi-image pieces (exhibited under one title) should not exceed 48 x 48.”

LIMITS: Each artist is limited to eight entries. No more than two entries from any artist will be included in the exhibit.

DEADLINE: November 10, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Late December

ENTRY FEE: There is a non-refundable entry/handling fee of $15.00 for each entry. Payment must accompany your entry submissions. Your check or money order should be made payable (only in U.S. dollars) to Yosemite Renaissance, Inc. One check may cover several entries from one artist (up to the eight entries allowed per artist).

JURORS: The Board of Directors of Yosemite Renaissance (consisting of artists, curators and administrators) will make the initial selection of works for the exhibition. Cash award-winners will be selected by independent judges to be announced.

AWARDS: At least $4,000 in cash awards will be distributed at the discretion of the judges. Purchase awards may be given as well. A special award of $300 will be given to the best piece inspired by Hetch Hetchy (pictured below) that the jurors select to be included in the exhibit.
