My non-art related work place is The Lodge at Buckberry Creek, a resort in the Great Smoky Mountains patterned after the Great Camps of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. The Lodge is a 4-Diamond resort and home to the only fine dining in Gatlinburg. So for me, the idea of the Adirondacks conjures images of hand-oiled leather couches, animal hide rugs, wood-burning fires and warm mulled cider. Thanks to this annual call, it also reminds me of phenomenal art opportunities as well! The holidays are in the air…

This Art Center is looking for qualified artist working in all mediums to apply for solo/group shows at the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts to show work in their galleries. They have three galleries on site and two satellite galleries.

The Arts Center host exhibits throughout the year, generally running 4 – 8 weeks. In particular they are looking for new and innovative art.

MEDIA: Mixed Media, Installations, Paintings, Drawings, Printmaking, Sculpture, Video, Sound, Interactive work, and more!

DEADLINE: December 2, 2011

ENTRY FEE: $25 for non-members for 3 to 5 images; $15 for members

What’s your idea of beauty? It’s all very subjective, isn’t it? This is a juried competition where they choose the best artists and then ask those who attend the reception to vote on the best artists from those showing.

The opening reception Saturday, January 7th, 2012 at 5:30-9:00 p.m. at the Irvine Gallery (212 Technology Drive, Suites H-J, Irvine, CA in Orange County, CA) 1/2 block from the corner of Barranca in the Spectrum Technology center, very close to the Irvine Spectrum.

The newest way isn’t always the best way. I love new fusion foods and the newest in scientifically gastronomic menus. But we still eat Jell-O at my house…with cocktail fruit. No kidding. I have cookbooks with wonderfully vivid pictures of savory Jello-O creations like salmon mousse terrine mold. Some ideas are worth preserving, although I cannot vouch for the salmon terrine. This Call is asking you to preserve a means and method that is a little less than current too. Interested in exploring this opportunity?

This competition is open to artists working with plastic cameras with plastic lenses (click the link if you are looking to buy one). The more obsolete, flawed, and lo-tech, the better. Images should be taken with cameras with limited controls, such as Diana, Holga, Lubitel, Lomo, Banner, and Ansco cameras. Beautiful prints from less-than-gorgeous cameras – that’s what we’re looking for! This is RayKo’s largest exhibition of the year with artists from all over the globe submitting work, and hundreds of attendees at the reception.

MEDIA: All work must be original & taken with a plastic camera & plastic lens.

Ann regularly participates as a juror and reviewer for a multitude of organizations: the SF Arts Commission, Academy of Art in SF, Artspan, SF Art Institute, Fotofest, Photolucida, Review Santa Fe, Review LA, PhotoAlliance, SPE, Fotovision, Click646, and Critical Mass. She has also taught at the Maine Media Workshops since 1994.

The BEAUTY
of HOME

My mother makes the ugliest chocolate chip cookies. They look like lumpy rocks, and as a teenager, I always longed for a mom that made Martha-Stewart-worthy sugar cookies decorated with colored sugar and dregees. But alas, I got a mom that makes ugly cookie that may taste better than anything I have ever put in my mouth! Home doesn’t always come in the pretty package you dream about, but it is still home. BTW, the secret to my mom’s cookies is semi-sweet mini chips and walnuts instead of pecans. This Call asks you to investigate what HOME means to you …good or bad.

JUROR: Krzysztof Candrowicz is a founder and the director of Lodz Art Center and Foundation of Visual Education in the city of Lodz, Poland. The foundation started the International Festival of Photography in 2001 and is now preparing the 11th annual celebration for 2012. As a director and chief curator of this event, Krzysztof established an association of 30 European festivals of photography, called PHOTO FESTIVAL UNION. The organization is responsible for common activities of European photo events, such as annual meetings, publications, photographic exchange and common promotion.

AWARDS: With selection for this exhibition, featured artist’s work will be seen by an international audience of collectors, curators, art consultants and other advocates of fine art photography. Each participant will be included in the Center’s Main Gallery exhibition and Online Gallery exhibition.

I am always amazed by how a simple ingredient can be transformed into a magnificent dish. Root vegetables are the perfect example. Who would of thought that something that spent most of the time it has existed under the ground could be transformed into something beautiful, warm and nutty? Partridge also administers her father’s photographic legacy, The Rondal Partridge Archives. Among her projects are a film profiling her godmother entitled Dorothea Lange: A Visual Life, and a documentary about her father called, Outta My Light: Photographer Rondal Partridge. Partridge has worked as an executive producer, producer, director and project manager for many companies. Raised in Berkeley, California, Partridge received a BA in Theater Arts and Arts Administration from Antioch College and an MA in Film from San Francisco State University.

Flow Art Space in Minneapolis, Minnesota announces a call to artists for The Art of Music to be held in the gallery from February 15 – 25, 2012 to coincide with the 2012 Minnesota Music Educators Association Conference, which is attended by over 1,300 music educators and nearly 6,000 people in total. The gallery will promote the show, host an artist reception, and feature art on its Website.

ELIGIBILITY: US artists at least 18 are welcome to submit.

Project Basho presents ONWARD Compé 2012, a juried photography exhibition exclusively featuring new and emerging photographers with envelope-pushing work.

ELIGIBILITY: ONWARD Compé is open to individuals who do not currently have a contractual agreement with any gallery for gallery representation. Previous ONWARD Compé selected photographers are permitted to enter the competition.

His award-winning monographs including House Hunting (2001), Outskirts (2002) and Roaming (2004) have garnered critical acclaim and established him as a important voice in contemporary fine art photography. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in commercial galleries and museums and is part of many prestigious collections including the Guggenheim Museum, George Eastman House, Whitney Museum of American Art, and more.

AWARDS: Photographs selected by Todd Hido will be exhibited by Project Basho’s gallery in Philadelphia in from February 9 – March 25, 2012. I become periodically addicted to snack foods. Recently I’ve been fixated on Hot Buffalo Wing Pretzel Pieces from Snyder’s; however, an upcoming trip to a warm climate in the dead of winter means dragging out my bathing suit in December. Ugh. The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences encourages emerging artists & established artists to participate in the Small Works Exhibition. The purpose of the exhibition is to showcase small works that reflect personal vision.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to U.S. Residents only, 18 years and older.

MEDIA: 2-D work max size 12” x 12” sq. 3-D work max size 8” x 8” x 8”.

ENTRY FEE: There is an entry fee of $20.00 for up to four works. Works in series count as separate works if they take up more than 12” x 12” square. U.S funds only, payable by check, money order or credit card (MasterCard or Visa only). All fees are NON-REFUNDABLE.

JUROR: Michael Cagno – Executive Director of the Noyes Museum of Art in Oceanville, NJ. Michael recieved his BFA from Rowan University and Masters in Museum Management from Seton Hall University. He is also currently an adjunct professor at the Richard Stockton College of NJ.

AWARDS: Cash awards will be announced at the exhibition’s opening reception: Best in Show – $250, Second Place – $100, Honorable Mention (2) – $25. Note: Artists who win a prize and are not in attendance of the opening reception will receive their check by mail.

SALES: A commission of 33 1/3% to the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences is required. The artist’s retail price should reflect this commission. All works must be priced accordingly or marked NOT FOR SALE (NFS).
