When people hear “American Food” they think of a homogenous buffet of beige food, but American food is a great quilt of influences from around the world.  For example, New Mexican Cuisine is also very different than the preferred Tex-Mex style of Mexican-American food in Texas and Arizona.  One of its most defining characteristics is the dominance of the New Mexican chile—in red and green varieties, depending on the stage of ripeness when picked.  Other distinctive elements include blue corn, the stacked enchilada, and sopapillas into which honey is added moments before eating.  Eat a little for me at the opening of this next show…

Check out this Call for Entries from the American Plains Artists in Las Cruces, New Mexico for Art of the Plains 2011.  All traditional media (no photography or computer generated) considered.  The entry fee is $25 (plus membership), and the deadline for digital entries is June 4th.  I have NEVER seen this many awards for one show EVER…

Learn more about American Plains Artists!The American Plains Artists announce a call to artists for a juried exhibition, September 8 – October 30, 2011 at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, Las Cruces, NM.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to artists working in any traditional 2D or 3D fine art media in a realistic or representational manner reflecting the theme of the American Plains completed within the last three years, original work only and not previously shown with APA.

MEDIA:  No photography or computer generated art accepted. We have to have both the image size of the artwork itself and the outside dimensions of the frame.  The maximum size for 2D work is 1564 square inches including the outside dimension of the frame.  An example of that is a 24″ x 36″ artwork with a five inch frame.  Sculpture would be of moderate size and not exceed 100 pounds.  Artwork must represent the theme of the show: American Plains.

DEADLINE:  June 4, 2011 for digital entries.

They are celebrations of a dreamer who has allowed his dream to become reality with all its grit and honesty, yet he still finds the work endlessly nteresting and satisfying. He has an artist’s vision of cowboys as they can only be around another cowboy, unposed and unself-conscious. They are men who practice their vision of excellence in whatever they do, leaving it up to the rest of us to determine whether they’re working or playing. These disciples of the “cowboy way” are Shoofly’s top hands and his work is forever honored by their friendship.

I take issues with imposed or even implied limits… even when I shouldn’t.  And, thanks to my food obsession, you won’t be surprised to learn that my weight has gone rather up and not so much down over the years.  I can’t just love art and food and food-themed art.  Oh no, I’d even love to wear art and food (like the dress in this Sarah Illenberger photo pictured left).  Sign me up.  Now.  If you refuse to accept limits, this call is a chance to stretch your talents to include public art AND sculpture.  Give it a shot…

Check out Art Opportunities in Chapel Hill!Experienced artists and artist teams are invited to apply for Sculpture Visions, a juried outdoor sculpture exhibition that will be on view from October 2011 through September 2012 in public spaces in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  This invitation is extended to all artists regardless of their state of residence and there is no entry fee.  In addition to finished pieces, proposed work will also be considered.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists regardless of residence.  North Carolina artists are encouraged to apply.  Participating artists must carry liability insurance.

JUROR:  An Artist Selection Committee comprising representatives of the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Public & Cultural Arts Office, participating exhibition venues and local artists will review all complete applications and select and site artworks for the Exhibition.  Selections are based on artistic excellence and the goal of exhibiting a variety of media in appropriate sites.

AWARDS:  Selected artists will receive a total honorarium of $1,500 per selected artwork that is intended to cover all expenses, including travel and liability insurance.  This honorarium will be paid in two installments: $750 after the work is installed in October 2011 and $750 after the work has been removed from the site in September of 2012.

Warm cheese makes the world go ’round.  When I’ve had a hard day, there is nothing I love more than nachos and a raspberry pineapple daiquiri and my local creekside cantina.  But sometimes we must remind ourselves that there is far more depth of flavor and choice in Hispanic food than your favorite local Mexican haunt.  South America, Central American and much of the Carribean offer food your taste buds will never forget.  This Call for Entries is a reason to celebrate the flavor!

Hispanic Heritage Celebration Poster Contest

 

Click to download the poster contest prospectus for the Hispanic Heritage Celebration!Miami International Mall will showcase the colorful flavors of Latin American countries during its 7th Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration from September 30 through October 2.  This free-to-the-public weekend event will feature folkloric music and dance, country exhibits, art and flag displays, live entertainment and a parade of native dresses from South America, Central America and the Caribbean countries.

In observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Miami International Mall is sponsoring its first poster contest, which is open to the general public. 

The poster should reflect the artist’s interpretation or rendition of what Hispanic heritage and culture means to them. The poster should also incorporate the use of the Hispanic Heritage Celebration logo.

Winning artwork will be made into the official poster for the 7th Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration and may also be used for promotional event items such as programs and invitations.

The winning poster will be unveiled at the 7th Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration kick-off reception, which will be held on Wednesday, July 27.

ELGIBILITY:  The poster contest is open to all artists.

MEDIA:  Size of the poster must be 11’’ x 17’’. Poster must be mounted on a 15’’ x 21’’ board.  High resolution of the poster entry art must also be submitted in its native format that it was designed in.  Digital art should be burned onto a CD and attached to the mounted poster.  Official Hispanic Heritage Celebration logo must be used without any alterations of color or typography.  Entry form must be attached to the back of the mounting board in the upper right hand corner.

However, in today’s world, it is all about trending.  A year ago, fish tacos were a hot trend along with edamame.  But today, they are back to being irrelevant and anonymous. The Brand Library Art Galleries offer visitors a professional gallery experience and showcases works by established and emerging artists that educate, enlighten, challenge and enrich people’s lives.

ELIGIBILITY:  Participation is open to artists residing in the United States.  Entries must be original work recently executed and not previously shown at the Brand Library Art Galleries.  Do not submit work, unless available August 12 to October 29, 2011.

Frank was born in New York, where he served as art critic for The Village Voice and The SoHo Weekly News, and moved to Los Angeles in 1988.

I love food fusion.  I’ve eaten in some crazy creations from Tex-Mex crossed with Filipino food to Cajun food crossed with Asian food.  Recently I had Rueben eggrolls.  Delicious.  Not everyone embraces the new of it all.  Digital art is like food fusion… not everyone loves it.  This call gives you a great chance to participate in a digital show, and it just happens to be in Berlin.  Bonus…

Digital Unity

The concept of this project will be to present various forms of digital art in a unified digital installation. Artist submissions are open to digital photography, digital audio installation, digital collage, digital painting and digital video clips.  Each entry will be evaluated on its own merit with respect to inclusion in the final digital installation.

 At least 10 digital images will be chosen for printing and inclusion in an exhibition which will be part of the installation.  All other digital materials will be utilized and included in a digital projection project as part of an artist residency and ultimately included in the final installation.  The installation will be presented to the public in Lübzow, Germany on October 2, 2011 with the entire installation then being presented in a Berlin gallery beginning on October 15, 2011.

Artists are welcomed to travel to Germany for the opening event and may also be interested in participating in installing the installation during the week leading up to the vernissage on October 2nd.  One artist will additionally be chosen to compile the digitalized material into the final installation.  Applications for this residency are separate from the submission of artwork for inclusion in the installation.  Any artist wishing to take part in installing the show can inquire about the availability and terms of accommodations for this project.

I believe that food has a sense of place.  When you eat cotton candy, don’t you think of going to the fair?  When I taste boiled peanuts (Yes, Virginia, they do exist), I am instantly transported to South Carolina.  You have associations of your own, no doubt. This Call is named Sense of Place, but it isn’t a theme.  Maybe it comes from the enormous sense of place felt even through photographs of this beautiful gallery space.  Inspired yet?

Check out this Call for Entries from the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art in Augusta, GA for the 2011 National Juried Exhbition: A Sense of Place.  The entry fee is low, and once again, the juror is well-documented and happens to be a printmaker, although many media are embraced.  This looks like a winner…

Learn more about the Sense of Place show from GHIA!The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art (GHIA) is pleased to announce its 2011 juried fine art competition, A Sense of Place.  Open to participants from throughout the United States, this 31st annual event seeks to recognize the outstanding quality and diversity of work being generated by contemporary American artists. 

Founded in 1937 and housed in the historic Nicholas Ware mansion (c. 1818), GHIA is Augusta’s only independent nonprofit visual arts school and gallery.  The Institute serves as a showcase for local, regional, and national artists, offering rotating exhibitions of outstanding contemporary artwork year-round.  In addition, professionally taught studio art classes in a wide variety of media are provided to students of all ages and experience levels.

ELIGIBILITY:  The 2011 juried fine art competition is open to all US artists age 18 and older.  All works must be original, not previously exhibited at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, and completed on or after June 1, 2009.

ENTRY FEE:  A non-refundable fee of $30 enables each artist to enter up to three works; additional works may be submitted at a cost of $5 each.  Please submit one digital image per work; one additional detail image will be accepted for three dimensional works.  Complete the entry form portion of the prospectus and return along with the required entry fee (checks, MasterCard and Visa accepted).  Please also include a self-addressed stamped envelope for mailing of the notification letter.

Learn more about the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art!JUROR:  Tom Hammond, noted printmaker and professor emeritus at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, will serve as juror for A Sense of Place 2011.  Over the past thirty years Hammond has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows throughout the United States and abroad.  His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Royal Museum of Art, Antwerp, Belgium; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, North Carolina.  Hammond holds a master of arts from East Carolina University and also studied at Atelier 17 in Paris.

AWARDS: Three cash prizes will be given, including a $750 Best of Show Award and two $500 Juror’s Awards.  Award recipients will be announced at the exhibition’s opening reception on Friday, September 16, 2011.

SALES:  Sales will be encouraged, and all works are assumed to be available for purchase unless designated “Not For Sale” (NFS).  A 35% gallery commission will be charged on sales of all exhibited artwork.

Learn more about LACDA online!Many artists from this exhibit continue their relationship with LACDA for exhibit in solo shows, exhibits curated outside of LACDA and exhibit in art and photo fairs where LACDA participates.  All entries are given special consideration for exhibiting at LACDA and outside exhibitions where we are featured.

Artists participating in their competitions form the pool of artists from which they select the vast majority of those featured at LACDA and are often considered by their associated network of galleries, museums and curators. Proceeds from the competition support these gallery programs.

ELIGIBILITY:  This call is international, open to all geographical locations.

MEDIA:  All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable.  Video stills are acceptable.

AWARDS:  Forty selected winners receive one print up to 24×36 on museum quality paper to be shown in an international group exhibition their gallery from June 9-July 2, 2011.  The show will be widely promoted and will include a reception for the artists.

SALES:  All artwork will be offered for sale.  Gallery retains 50% of all sales. Winners retain ownership of all unsold works.  All artwork remains the intellectual property of the winner.  Winner agrees to allow use of their images for promotional purposes only.
