BUTTERIf you are what you eat, I come in stick form. Butter. I cannot tell you how often my husband’s cooking sends goodness wafting in the air which elicits the same response every time. “Butter. Onions. Yum.” It happens so many times a week, there is little doubt. I am butter. This Call wants to know what YOU are. Tell them…

on the road, again
I spend a lot of time on the road, and the work of Grant Haffner, our current Artist of the Day, serves as a great reminder to stop, take a breath and SEE. I am a huge fan of color field work, and this intersection of color field with a dash of Fauvism and huge dollop of the living landscape is stunning–nectareous, even, to this weary traveler. (continues below)

of their culture will never be understood
let alone believed by the masses.” –Plato

feelin’I ran across Buddha’s finger a couple of years ago. What a bizarre, other-worldly looking fruit. It is a type of citron and has the aroma of a lemon. It makes great candied peel and is fantastic for flavoring vodka, or infusing oil or sugar. The best part is that the pith doesn’t have the bitter taste that is commonly in the white of the lemon. I would love to have a keep just for ornamental reasons since fruit tends to last longer “on the vine” than flowers do. The fruit of this tree just doesn’t look real. The next Call wants just the opposite–subject matter that appears real but is not. This is a science fiction lovers dream…

perspective, yes
Get to know artist Amy Friend, our current Artist of the Day. I struggled to choose what to post because she is, simply, in my head. This work is both lush & toothsome. (continues below)

“My current body of work focuses on a desire for balance and the dichotomy of my life; my desire for adventure and freedom versus a need for security and roots. Illustrating these themes is the current obsession of mine. Using metaphors and abstracts, my work maintains realism in its depiction. The compositions create a graceful struggle and an uncertain balance.”

EATI ate broccoli at dinner last night. *yawn* Did you know there are approximately 30,000 edible plants on this planet? Did you also know that a mere 50 crops make up 90% of the calories consumed? How did we get so boring? Diversity is the best part of eating and cooking and consuming (and being for that matter) even if I do forget that when shopping some days. This next Call is another excellent way to celebrate diversity. Take a look…

cold & cheapI am grateful for the apples, but I am missing fresh local veggies already. My local orchard serves as my farmers market most weeks. With their cold storage program, I can get local apples for most of the year, but the veggies they offer are limited as of November. Aside from winter squash, the only thing LOCALLY fresh I’ll have until spring are potatoes, onions and maybe a hot house bell pepper or two. My normal $25 farmers market budget will be too much for a change. This Call is a great use for the extra $. Take a look…

eat myI’m afraid of eating wild mushrooms. Correction, I am afraid of improperly identifying a mushroom as edible and doing unexpected harm to my family. So, I have been trying to decide whether or not to grow them myself. Growing mushrooms at home always conjures images of damp, basement-like conditions. But research indicates I can crow them on logs in dappled shade, above ground, among the living, with fewer creepy-crawlies. This next Call want to know your views, wild OR domestic, but no veggies–just animals. Take a look…

seat beltI eat in my car A LOT. This has always been true. Once upon a time, those meals consisted of a generous amount of fast food of the drive thru variety. However, as my tolerance for processed food has waned but my travel for the job has increased, I find that packing food for the road has become more and more common. Eating a decent meal is no longer an out of bounds activity for the car. I do pull over to eat, but my seat belt has the permanent aroma of Italian dressing. This next Call wants to know what YOU consider out of bounds. This is a great opportunity and a beautiful space…
