CALL for ENTRIES: Scapes 2019

Learn more about the Scapes 2019 exhibit from art-competition.net!

WATER you up to?

It feels like it has been raining forever and may just never stop. Ever. I’ve never had a green thumb, but my grandmother tried to teach me the basic.  I remember almost nothing she taught me except leaves turn yellow when you over water, and nothing is more exciting than the burst of the seed pod of a touch-me-not.  So, while I can grow herbs on a windowsill, my dream of having a sustainable farming endeavor is a lost cause.  But many of my friends are out there trying only to eat what they grow.

Realistically what do you grow end the land of never ending rain?  Apparently taro thrives even in water logged conditions for up to weeks at a time.  I could live on taro chips, right?  Maybe not. Luckily I can still canoe to my local grocer.  The rain is also making me hyperbolic, ha.  I could paint the rain, I suppose, or gather rainwater to feed my watercolors for this next landscape call.  I then I could use the prize money to buy aquaponic supplies.

the PLATE truth

Where are the beautifully plated foods?  I have been home from my residency for 3 days, and I miss my housemates, my studio, the time to focus solely on creation, and honestly, I miss the sauce swirls and flower garnishes on every meal.  So bratty, I know.  Even the goulash was stunning.  Fear not, I’ll publish the Call for that residency another day.  In the meantime, here’s a Call for your best still life work.  Investigate…

MEDIA:   Open to work in any medium including digital and experimental mediums

THEME:  STILL LIFE “can be a very personal view of an artist’s daily life. . . . The magic of still life imagery is that they [sic] can show us a new way of looking at the ordinary objects around us. Once they are placed into a specific arrangement and then captured in paint, ink, pastel, photography or any other medium – the objects take on a whole new meaning. They are imbued with a life beyond the ordinary. Their existence becomes recorded in time. The objects chosen for a still life painting often have a special meaning, either on a personal, cultural, societal, religious or philosophical level. The themes surrounding the artwork often provoke introspection and reflection in the viewer. The way that the objects are depicted can evoke a wide variety of emotions“. –art-competition.net

CALL for ENTRIES: Natural Encounters

Learn more about the Natural Encounters Exhibit from NY Photo Curator!

just NUTS

I shop from a half-dozen grocery stores. Because all but one is out of town, my menu is often reflected in my travels for the week.  Thai food only shows up on the table when I make it 30 miles out to get natural peanut butter.  I mean, the local grocer has something called “natural”, but I think we can agree that just because something CAN be eaten doesn’t mean it SHOULD be eaten –natural or not.  However, I do love the junky peanut butter cereal available everywhere that is neither natural nor contains actual peanut butter.  Hi, my name is Rachel, and I’m a food snob hypocrite.  It’s complicated.  This next Call is all about our relationship to the natural world.  I can’t wait to see this one…

Check out this Call for Entries from N.Y. Photo Curator (online) for the Natural Encounters exhibit. $20 entry, no shipping, plus art publication for ALL entrants.  Be sure to check out this juror’s work; it is fantastic.  Take a look…

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

THEME:  Natural Encounters. We now know that 60% of primate species are threatened with extinction, as are hundreds of other species. In the the Arctic, large areas of permafrost are melting, and an ice swath the size of Delaware is separating in Antarctica. These are signposts for a hopeless future for our planet, and it’s our responsibility as artists to call attention to, and alter, this course.  Please submit images that address the connection and interdependence between humans and the natural world. The images may or may not be documentary. I’m looking for emotional impact as well as a strong composition. I encourage all photographic techniques, although the message is more paramount than the medium.” –Fran Forman

GREEN filler

I am the queen of comfort food.  I know that the secret to award-winning mac ‘n’ cheese is Dijon mustard. I know that a light coat of olive oil under the sauce prevent pizza crust from getting soggy while baking.  I know a dust of cayenne makes the chocolate sauce on your sundae sing.  But this week, my only comfort is salad.  Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and then vacation.  I have eaten everything that won’t run from me –none of it on the light side.  Different food for different feels (and fills).  This next Call wants your take on food and sustenance.  Take a look…

Learn more about the Windows edition of Don't Take Pictures!clink CLINK

Except for a few specialty pieces, I’ve always owned white dishes.  I love color, but food has always been the creative expression for me –even when my husband spent two years as a commercial potter.  In recent years, we’ve begun slumping glass part time in a kiln shed built onto our back deck.  I am intrigued by the patterns and textures and colors as they meld together.  It make me want to make a different sheet of glass for every window in my house.  This next Call is a salute to that very visual framework.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Red 2

Learn more about the Red 2 Exhibit from art-competition.net!another shot of RED

Lamenting the end of red foods the other day, I completely forgot about rhubarb.  The further South you live, the later in the season you can harvest rhubarb.  It isn’t a common find at fresh markets in my area, or even at my grocer, in theory because it is a pain.  It is disease resistant and hard to kill, but it requires a well-fed diet of compost and/or manure each year and SO MUCH watering.  Nonetheless, I love rhubarb jam.  Rhubarb, sugar, lemon juice.  Simple, sweet & tart.  Try it; you’ll love it.  This next Call is looking for your red work, fruits & veggies are optional.  Delicious…

My dog only eats dog treats at home.  When she’s at the dog sitter’s house, she will only take cat treats.  I don’t get it.  I once had a cat that would only limp when I watched her.  How odd to think that our perceived expectations alter even the behavior of our furry family.  This next Call wants to know about your favorite animal friends.  An opportunity with a little heart…

I believe the concept of “edible” is abstract, not just subjective.  Technically, anything that doesn’t kill you is edible.  Well, really, you can still eat things that WILL kill you.  So, I suppose if you are physically able to consume something, it is edible.  So, maybe the notion of “eatability” is the abstract one.  Why would someone pay a fortune to eat a fertilized duck egg?  Because they are yummy? Doubtful.  But, the precedent for eating eggs and eating ducks has been set, so I understand why it would occur to someone to try.  But coconut?  Green or furry, how did someone look at a coconut and say, “let’s eat one”?  Abstract.  This next Call is also purely abstract.  Take a look…

Food challenges abound: Meatless Monday, Veggie Thursday & others.  I full believe in $5 Friday.  It doesn’t have to be Friday, but, well, alliteration.  I like the creativity required to feed my family of three for $5.  My “go to” used to be chicken quarters (75¢/lb), but chicken that cheap can be scary.  But, I can serve the best of eggs as protein, grass-fed, free-range, antibiotic free FRESH eggs and still have plenty of cash left over to round out the meal.  Fried rice & quiche are family favorites, but if you are not an egg eater, dried beans are fantastic (but require prep time).  This next Call is also a shockingly good value for $5 as well.  Take a look…
