CALL for ENTRIES: Faces of Humanity

THAI tofu

I was out having Thai food for lunch with a friend lately.  I ordered massaman curry with shrimp; she ordered green curry with tofu.  I will never understand.  I said, “Tofu?”, and she replied, “of course, it is my favorite”.  Seriously?  I am certain there are a lot of people who appreciate tofu as a vegetarian-friendly protein that will take on the flavors of other foods.  But she looked me in the face and said, “it is my favorite”.  NO.  It isn’t really anyone’s favorite, is it?  I was looking at the face of deprivation, right?  Someone explain tofu to me.  Again.  Please. This next Call wants to see the Face of Humanity, not necessarily of a tofu lover (assuming those really exist, ha)Investigate this opportunity…

childhood FAVORITES.

I spent part of this weekend in a Virginia State Park.  Every year the park lights their train tunnel and serves hot chocolate & s’mores while musicians echo familiar carols in the background.  As the temperature dropped to the mid-thirties, I made my way to concessions & was handed a steaming paper cup with a plastic spoon to stir my powdered mix.  After my first sugary sip, I was transported to my childhood, as if by time machine, complete with melted marshmallow mustache.  Thanks to Natural Tunnel State Park for the trip. ♥  This next Call wants your vision of the passage of time.  Take a look…

ARTIST of the DAY: Elizabeth White

"Migration", a site-specific installation of concrete life-cast leaves, by Elizabeth White
“Migration”, a site-specific installation of concrete life-cast leaves, by Elizabeth White

“In view of the current economic disasters, political conditions, military actions & climate or earth changes I see immigration as the new normal.  What may be them today is us tomorrow.” — Elizabeth White

Many people spend a lifetime without ever having to consider the need to emigrate from their homeland.  Many others spend their lives learning what it means to always be an immigrant, never feeling quite at home.  And then there are others, never quite at home regardless of where they are.  When I saw the “Migration” installation by today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Elizabeth White, I marveled at the simple symbolism of leaves separated from their roots.  It is precisely how many of us feel, like leaves strewn about, seemingly at random.  Disconnected.

CALL for ENTRIES: Raw

raw FOOD

In a world where so many people are vegetarian or vegan, steak tartar was once the most controversial food conversations one could have.  Now we have so many more choices of things with which to disagree.  If we just stick to raw foods, there are still subgroups like fruitarians, juicearians, or sproutarians which cause heads to metaphorically explode.  The bottom line is that people have the right to determine what goes into their bodies, and what we choose to eat says something about who we are.  We are what we eat, right?  This next Call wants to know the raw truth about you through your work.  This one is personal…

Check out this Call for Entries from IU Kokomo Art Gallery (Kokomo, IN) for Raw: The Exhibition.  There is no entry fee, the media is wide open & the commission rate is low.  If you’re willing to let it hang out, this could be a great opportunity…

POMME de terre

While most of the U.S. is pumpkin spice obsessed this Fall, I am looking forward to potatoes.  Yes, I can get potatoes year ’round, but most of my favorite potato dishes are French-inspired, winter comfort food.  Raclette is a firm cheese made from cow’s milk, meant to melted and served over potatoes. Gratin dauphinois is a glorious combination of potatoes, cream & garlic reminiscent of scalloped potatoes.   How about hachis parmentier, consisting mashed potatoes & ground beef, layered with cheese?  The only thing better than these winter foods would be eating them in Paris.  This next Call could give you just that opportunity.  Take a look…

I have never been a big fan of rice. As a child, I only experienced rice as white, short grain & topped with copious amounts of brown gravy.  When put up against the family of starches, including potatoes and pasta, rice has always paled in comparison.  But lately, I have a newfound respect for the subtleties.  Available in a rainbow of hues, this delicate grain makes the best of additions from tomatoes & cumin to mango & orange juice.  Rice has emerged as one of my favorites.  This next Call seeks emerging artists.  Are you emerging?
