Winter is bearing down on my culinary sensibilities; it does every year.  In need of tomatoes for a recipe, I ventured into the produce section of my local grocer on a mission.  I was greeted with $4/lb. hot house tomatoes shipped in from a climate that should not require a hot house for them to flourish.  The most amazing part is that I only had to buy one.  Why?  Because the one tomato I bought, while beautifully folded like so many of my favorite heirloom varieties, was dense like a cannon ball and nearly three-quarters the size of my head.  Monster tomatoes are in a store near you.  (Spring can’t come soon enough.)  In the meantime, your monstrous work is welcomed by this next Call.  It is the first Call for this online publication; don’t miss out…

Monsters are at once foreign and familiar, and they take on a good deal of cultural work, reflecting back to us our own monstrous side as well as representing “otherness”. Protectors or destroyers, they elicit reflection on the complexities of our nature . . . As a society, we consume monster-centric media in mass quantities, from volumes of fairy tales to horror flicks to serial killers presented on screen and in podcasts. From Totoro to Pan’s Labyrinth, be they gentle or malicious, monsters demonstrate a broad and intensely creative diversity of form, and there is a rich art historical archive of images and sculpture dating back centuries and reaching across cultural boundaries. –Anne Eder

CURATOR:  Anne Eder is an interdisciplinary artist and educator from Philadelphia. She holds an MFA in Photography and Integrated Media from Lesley University College of Art and Design where she studied with Christopher James and has been employed as an adjunct professor.  Eder teaches courses in alternative and material processes in photography and in interdisciplinary projects, and will be joining the roster of educators at Harvard University and at Penumbra Foundation in NYC this spring. She is also a reviewer for Lensculture.

AWARDS:  The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. I was out having Thai food for lunch with a friend lately.  I ordered massaman curry with shrimp; she ordered green curry with tofu.  I will never understand.  I said, “Tofu?”, and she replied, “of course, it is my favorite”.  Seriously?  I am certain there are a lot of people who appreciate tofu as a vegetarian-friendly protein that will take on the flavors of other foods.  But she looked me in the face and said, “it is my favorite”.  NO.  It isn’t really anyone’s favorite, is it?  I was looking at the face of deprivation, right?  Someone explain tofu to me.  Again.  Please. I am the queen of comfort food.  I know that the secret to award-winning mac ‘n’ cheese is Dijon mustard. I’ve been on vacation for a few days.  It might be more accurate to say I’ve been eating for a solid three days.  Before we set out, every restaurant was planned, and the challenge became how to fit in all the additional little eateries and diners that popped up en route.  I was reminded, again, that fancy presentation & ingredients don’t make food more filling, more tangible, than the classics.  I enjoyed the 7″ layer cake from the 24-hour diner just as much as the gatrique-dotted gastropub fare.  This next Call wants your tangible, in the hand (not the stomach) photographs.  I love this call…

CURATOR:  Blue Mitchell is an independent publisher, curator, educator & photographer.  Based in Portland, OR, he has been involved with many facets of the photographic arts. After Mitchell received his BFA from Oregon College of Art & Craft in 2005 he founded One Twelve Publishing. One Twelve focuses on photography based projects in both print and online gallery formats. Aside from his publishing endeavors, Mitchell has also curated & juried exhibitions for a number of galleries and organizations. He has been a juror for Critical Mass & a reviewer for numerous photo festivals across the U.S..  Mitchell teaches workshops as well as presents lectures & panels discussions on hand-crafted photography. Most recently, he was the keynote speaker at the 2016 Northwest Symposium for Alternative Process Photography in Vancouver, BC.

I have downtown déjà vu.  Surely you’ve been in a situation that feels overwhelmingly familiar but that you know for certain you’ve never previously encountered.  Have you walked down a street and thought, “have I been here before”?  It happens to me often, but I’ve finally put my finger on it.  It always happens to me in small downtowns.  The street level experience of downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has, at its hearts, abiding similarities to Troy, New York, and Savannah, Georgia and even the Old City in Knoxville, TN.  I don’t have to have same food vendor or restaurant experience to feel “at home” away from home. THEME:  Street Shooting. “What is street photography? It is candid moments on the street or in any other public place such a grocery store, a mall, or a park. It is chance encounters and random incidents in public places. Street photography generally focuses on people and everyday life and shares the same ethics as photojournalism and documentary photography, meaning nothing is set up or changed in the digital darkroom. Street portraits are also considered to be street photography and like photojournalism, portraits are the only type of photograph that can be set up. Some street photographers shoot in an artful way, with shadows and light. Others shoot like a newspaper photographer, concentrating on moments among people on the street. Don’t just photograph someone walking down the sidewalk. The genre is saturated with these images. Look for unusual locations and aesthetically pleasing backgrounds. The background content is as important as the subject. The combination of the two makes the picture. Do not photograph anyone less fortunate than yourself, meaning no photos of homeless people unless you can make a strong social statement.”

CURATOR:  Julia Dean is a photographer, educator, writer & executive director/founder of the Los Angeles Center of Photography.  She began her career as an apprentice to pioneering photographer Berenice Abbott.  Later, Julia was a photo editor for the Associated Press in New York.  For the past 16 years, Julia has concentrated on street photography around the world. For the past six years, street shooting in downtown Los Angeles has been her primary focus.  Julia was selected for a book about to be produced by Acuity Press and PDN magazine featuring 20 street shooters around the world.  Julia received a B.S. in photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology & a M.A. in journalism at the University of Nebraska.

I spent part of this weekend in a Virginia State Park.  Every year the park lights their train tunnel and serves hot chocolate & s’mores while musicians echo familiar carols in the background.  As the temperature dropped to the mid-thirties, I made my way to concessions & was handed a steaming paper cup with a plastic spoon to stir my powdered mix.  After my first sugary sip, I was transported to my childhood, as if by time machine, complete with melted marshmallow mustache.  Thanks to Natural Tunnel State Park for the trip. ♥  This next Call wants your vision of the passage of time.  Take a look…

teenage mutant ninja CHICKENS

My house smells like tom kha gai, a Thai coconut soup with chicken.  It is my personal chicken-noodle equivalent.  My husband bought chicken breast, and I weighed out the pound I needed.  Chicken is ingrained in the food vocabulary of the meat-eating population of the U.S.  We feed our children nuggets & tenders and our families buffalo wings & whole roasters.  But today, my one pound of chicken consisted of ONE boneless breast.  Regardless of how you feel about the ethical, environmental or health issues surrounding meat, you should be afraid of any chicken that has two 1lb. breasts, right?  Isn’t that chicken destined to lead an uprising against factory farmers?  Dude.  If chicken is a part of our food vernacular, then these mutant chickens are the trendy slang that I will be happy to see fade.  This next Call is about the vernacular of you and yours.  Take a look…

THEME:  Vernacular.  Kopeikin came up with this theme as just having seen the Walker Evans retrospective at SFMOMA, where Evans work, American vernacular, or the language of everyday life found in roadside attractions, postcards, storefronts, and signage across the country stuck out in his memory.  Over five decades, Evans’s powerful images responded to and reflected the spirit, suffering, and fortitude of a nation. His iconic images of the Great Depression and his postwar photo essays depicting shop window displays, urban architecture, and junked automobiles defined a new documentary style that continues to influence generations of artists.  This call is not just about American vernacular. It’s about vernacular in all countries.

CURATOR:  Paul Kopeikin opened his Los Angeles Gallery in 1991 and at several locations throughout the City has produced well over 200 exhibitions of vintage, modern and contemporary photography, and to a lesser extent paintings, drawings and sculpture. The Gallery participates in major International Art Fairs and Mr. Kopeikin regularly reviews portfolios for and/or otherwise helps charitable causes, sits on art panels and talks and writes about the subject, primarily now-a-days on social media.  The Kopeikin Gallery is an internationally recognized gallery of photography and contemporary art in the Culver City Arts District of Los Angeles.  Following decades of exploring photography’s history, the gallery program has expanded beyond photography to include painting and works on paper.
