I’ve always been lucky in the kitchen.  Most of my experiments work.  I often get it right the first time I try.  Maybe that is how my love affair with food began–as something successful.  Who isn’t attracted to being good at something?  I often struggle in the studio, but the struggle produces better work.  So am I lucky not to be lucky in the studio? I don’t like to have anyone cook in my kitchen other than my husband.  I’m just territorial that way.  I feel judged and inadequate, and I don’t understand why.  I have also never had a guest blogger on AAAD.

But, with the holidays slowly approaching, inevitably I will have to endure guest chefs in my kitchen.  And today, we will have a guest blogger.  There is a time for most things in this life, and today it is time for this to be said, even if not by me…

INVISIBLE REJECTION

“One day, someone more energetic than me will compile a “best practices” manual for galleries holding juried art exhibitions. The first page of the manual will contain a list of basic commandments to be followed under all circumstances. The first commandment will read something like ‘Thou shalt always include a letter of acceptance or rejection.’

“It seems like basic common sense, right? It’s an obvious no-brainier and normally what you would expect from anyone who considers themselves to be an art professional. It’s also the polite thing to do.

“You would be surprised, however, how often such basics are neglected. Over the last year or so, it’s happened to me on multiple occasions. The deadline for notification comes and goes and there’s no word. Trying to be polite, you wait several days under the assumption that maybe the juror’s dog ate your images or perhaps the gallery director had some sort of bizarre gardening accident and the notice was delayed. Then, with great reluctance, you follow up with an e-mail asking politely if there has been a delay. Much to your chagrin, you are told that your work was not selected and that only accepted artists were notified. To make matters worse, the gallery suggests that this is actually common practice.  Well, I’m not buying it…

No matter how you slice it,
informing artists by this default mechanism
(The invisible rejection letter)
 amounts to no notice at all.
It’s unprofessional,
it’s lazy,
and it’s simply not polite.

 

“My wife raised me to send thank you notes and I expect similar behavior from art professionals. If you don’t have the stomach to send rejection letters, get out of the juried art show racket. Alternatively, at least spell out such practices in big, bold type somewhere in the call to artists.”

Vacation has not been kind to my figure.  Tomorrow is the last day of my summer vacation at Lake Lure (Dirty Dancing & Last of the Mohicans were filmed here), and I am already trying to figure out tomorrow’s food schedule and we’ve just finished with today’s brunch.  What is it about being out of town that leads to over-indulgence and gluttony?  Maybe I need another treat to figure it out. I have drafted a dozen cookbooks in my head.  They are usually inspired by whatever food eccentricity I am dwelling on at the moment.  But they always have their roots in momentary excitement as opposed to being deep-rooted in a true philosophy about food.  Maybe if I ever find myself, a cookbook will make it out of the draft stage.  In the meantime, my roots will have to be of the vegetable variety.  This next Call want to explore YOUR feelings on roots, or the lack thereof…

The exhibition series will consist of two sections – Works on Paper and Works on Space – and one exhibition proposal for each section will be chosen and realized on New York’s Lower East Side.

NY has historically been home to ethnically diverse immigrants, inspiring feelings and experiences related to migration, temporality, transformation, assimilation, or conflict.  DRAFTspace is hosting this exhibition series to provoke attention and discussion about this sense of rootlessness.  Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme creatively.

The theme of rootlessness is connected to the unique space setup and location. The exhibit will not be held in a permanent gallery space.  Instead, it will temporarily occupy a street-level vacant retail space that will be consecutively transformed to fit the different identity and characteristics of each exhibition.

The Lower East Side where this event will take place has long been an immigrant neighborhood and has seen a series of immigrant communities pass through it.  The area has undergone gentrification, starting in the mid-2000s and has since become home to upscale boutiques and numerous contemporary art galleries.

MEDIA:  Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Photography, or Illustration for “Works on Paper” section OR Sculpture or Site-Specific Mixed Media Installations for “Works on Space” section

DEADLINE:  August 31, 2013

ENTRY FEE: $40 per entry for up to 10 images

AWARDS:  $500 Cash Prize & Solo Exhibition.  The artist of each selected proposal will receive a $500 cash prize and his or her solo exhibition proposal will be realized.

Even my dogs have become finicky eaters.  They have always been Milk-Bone® kind of dogs.  But it seems that lately they have started turning up their nose to their usual treats.  I’ve tried peanut butter flavored and beef basted with no results.  I already bake a lot of foods from scratch for my family, and I fear dog treats may get added to the list soon.  If I am going to make treats, I’d rather make them for the hard working pups involved with this next call instead of my spoiled brats.  Take a look…

I have a lot of kitchen toys, but most of them are small, manually-operated hand gadgets.  Honestly, I’m not sure I could cook without a manual juice reamer or my mandolin.  I usually forego the big, shiny electric appliances, but I recently gave in to a beautiful tangerine colored Cuisinart ice cream maker.  It looks like a toy, but it produces masterpieces.  A little kefir milk, a few raspberries and a scrape of vanilla bean is all it takes.  This next Call wants to see the masterpiece you can create with a toy.  Be sure to read the media description completely…

Expect the unexpected.  The Nave Gallery and Washington Street Art Center have in the past separately held toy camera photography shows. They are now joining together to create  an international festival in Somerville, MA celebrating the quirky and creative results that happen when the photographer is forced to loosen his/her controls.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

MEDIA:  Photography.  For the Somerville Toy Camera Fest (STCF), “toy camera” is identified as any low-end, low-tech, limited-control camera, including Holga, Diana and other Lomo products, as well as Brownies and Anscos and any pinhole cameras. Images made from Polaroid film backs attached to Holga are welcome; straight Polaroid camera pictures are not. Cell phone images are welcome.

DEADLINE:  July 24, 2013

ENTRY FEE:  $20 for up to 5 images

JUROR:  Isa Leshko is a fine art photographer living in Philadelphia, PA. She has had solo exhibitions at the Corden|Potts Gallery, the Galveston Arts Center, the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Houston Center for Photography, the Silver Eye Center for Photography, and the Richard Levy Gallery. Her prints are in numerous private and public collections including the Boston Public Library, the Harry Ransom Center, Haverford College, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Isa’s work is represented by the Corden|Potts Gallery in San Francisco, CA and the Richard Levy Gallery in Albuquerque, NM.

“Above all, I want to see images that evoke a strong emotion — joy, fear, sadness, anger, revulsion — or challenge the way I think. Toy camera imagery is about defying photographic conventions. AWARDS:  People’s Choice Award (for each location): 1 Holga 144-120 Medium Format 120N Camera with Built-in Lens, 3 Honorable mention juror awards (for each location).  There will be three separate exhibitions as part of the Somerville Toy Camera Fest. The juror will decide final placement of work that is accepted:  The Washington Street Arts Center (August 10-31, 2013), The Nave Gallery (September 7-28, 2013), and The Nave Annex (September 11-29, 2013).

Panopticon Gallery (est. 1971) is one of the oldest fine art photography galleries in the United States specializing in contemporary, modern and vintage photography. They represent established and emerging photographers with a primary focus on developing and expanding their careers.

The gallery regularly assists collectors in buying, selling and locating photographs and supports local educational institutions, regional art museums and estates. Panopticon Gallery is located inside the Hotel Commonwealth in Boston, Massachusetts.
