Still Life

From Dutch masters’ paintings to contemporary photography, the still life has played an important role in art history. This genre grants the artist complete control over their subjects, allowing unparalleled ability to select details and manipulate the scene.

Still lifes often employ symbolism, where the objects assume their own character and identity. An entire story can be told with the arrangement of a few items; toys, dolls, and household goods become surrogates, and natural life is given a persona. For Still Life: The Art of Arrangement, The Kiernan Gallery seeks evocative and symbolic still life images.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All photographic media are encouraged.

DEADLINE: August 20, 2012

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of accepted work via email approximately eight days after the submission deadline.

Terrain

Looking at both the vast and the microscopic, landscape photography takes us from backyards to national parks; from mountains to coastlines. This genre includes images of the untouched beauty of the earth as well as places impacted by mankind.  In addition to beauty, it often explores the contours of our relationship with the land, presenting historic battlefields, high-rise jungles, or threatened environments.  For Terrain, The Kiernan Gallery seeks images that explore the beauty and complexity of our landscape.

Eggplants are sexy.  Okay, each to their own, but how do you resist the deep aubergine color, the shiny firm skin and the mild but complex flavor.  If I were a vegetable, an eggplant wouldn’t be a bad thing to be.  This next show is looking for self-portraiture, but I’m not sure they are looking for my life as an eggplant.  Why don’t you give it a shot? No pun intended.

Both sides of the Lens:
Self-Portraiture

A photographer’s most reliable subject is his or her self. By turning the camera on oneself the photographer is brought out from behind their lens, presenting themselves to the world as both artist and subject.

Self-portraiture is often used to explore and manipulate identity. The photographer invites judgement and critique on not only their artistic message, but also their appearance and demeanor. For this exhibition, The Kiernan Gallery seeks self-portraits that provide insight into the artist; their stories, struggles and triumphs.

I read alot of facebook posts slamming folks that post cell phone pics of their food.  Sorry, I do it too.  See my Cayman Islands lunch pictured left.  Be patient with the food-obsessed; we’re people too.  Our exaggerated sense of self-importance has us convinced that you will be so happy for us when you see our latest creation or out-to-eat treat.  I am certain there is a diagnosis out there that I haven’t heard of.  Be kind.  This next show might be willing to take some of those food pics off our hands, though.  Whatcha think?

Check out this Call for Entries from the Kiernan Gallery (Lexington, VA) for iSpy, a cell phone photography show.  The entry fee is low, and the gallery is beautiful.  Take a look…

I prefer immediate gratification, be it chocolate or laundry. I simply don’t like to wait.  That is one of the many reasons that I don’t bake chocolate soufflés–because I cannot handle the agony of seeing if it will turn out beautiful and puffed or flat and dreary.  I lose enthusiasm for the whole laundry process during the dry time too (not that I am generally very enthused about it to start with).  Although, I will take soufflé baking over laundry any day of the week.  This next Call is a perfect opportunity for you to contemplate the passage of time, and not just of food and laundry. Think about it…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Kiernan Gallery in Lexington, VA for In Time. This entry fee is low, and I love the concept of contemplating the passage of time, a reflection if you will. Take a look!

CALL for ENTRIES: In Time

Learn more about the Kiernan Gallery!Time is an essential element of science, philosophy, and religion. Nonetheless its definition has continuously eluded the greatest minds. For In Time, The Kiernan Gallery welcomes images that interpret and define Time as subject matter, whether it be in a historical context of the then and now, time lapse, events and the interval between them, of a crucial moment, preserved for eternity. In a sense, every photograph is an embodiment of time.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists internationally.

MEDIA: All photographic media are encouraged.
