Things tend to be a little offbeat in my studio. I love the quirky …the odd …the naturally puzzling. Things also tend to be a little offbeat in my kitchen. But, we’ve taken sea urchin off the menu since Jon is allergic to shellfish. Maybe it isn’t a problem, but I really can’t decide. This next call invites you to revel in the weirdness of it all.

That’s Weird

1650 Gallery is hosting a juried photography exhibition: THAT’S WEIRD … Let’s face it, it happens. You ingest a CF card, you develop a roll of film. Everything looks fine at first… there’s Aunt Millie. Oh, and there’s the dog being cute. And then you see it. “Who took THAT?” you say to yourself… “What IS that?” is the next question out of your mouth. Then it dawns on you. YOU took that. And you liked it. You KNOW what it is… THAT’S WEIRD! We all have a few photographic skeletons in our closet and NOW is the time to dust them off and send them to the 1650 Gallery!

This month 1650 Gallery welcomes your oddest and most offbeat photographic moments. Animal, vegetable or mineral. Send them your haha, your most embarrassing or your “what the?!!” moments.

Or how about that scary shot of Uncle Jim and the mailman eating that donut? Anything goes! You see, there really are no rules as long as whatever it is… THAT’S WEIRD!!!

NOTIFICATION: Photographers will be notified of accepted work via e-mail approximately one week after the deadline. If selected, artists will be sent instructions for submitting work for exhibition.

JUROR: Billy the Mime is an avid photo collector and professional weirdo. He has amazed and disturbed audiences across the country with his offbeat performances. The New York Times called Billy the Mime’s live show “politically incorrect” and “shockingly unsentimental.”

FREE FRAMING: They offer free matting and framing for accepted photographs that fit their pre-cut mat sizes for the duration of the exhibition. Precut mat sizes are 11″x14″ mats with an 8″x10″ window, or 16″x20″ mats with an 11″x14″ window and 20″x24″ mats with a 16″x20″ window. They will also print your photo for a nominal fee if you are accepted into the show and would prefer not to mail a print.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Along with the completed application form, please submit your work according to the following guidelines: They only accept digital files. All digital images should be provided as jpgs only, 72 ppi, image width not to exceed 1024 pixels on the longest side. Files should be titled as follows: LastName_FirstName_1Title.jpg The number should correspond with the number on the application form. 3 ALARM for YOU!

I love a good festival. I am going to Gatlinburg’s Annual Chili Cook Off this week and will stuff myself to the gills. Yum. I’m truly afraid to attend the Annual Ribfest (which also includes chicken wings)… I might not fit back into my car at the end. Think of all the festival food you could eat with these Calls for Entry.

Some folks love Art Festivals, and they can be an excellent opportunity for art sales if you know how to work it. Check out these Calls for Entry from the Celedon Fine Arts Festival, the Omaha Summer Arts Festival and the Monmouth Festival of the Arts. I don’t often post art festivals…so here’s three to make it up to those of you who love them!

CALL for ENTRIES: Feeling Festive

CELADON
Fine Arts Festival:

Artists are invited to apply to the three-day Celadon Fine Arts Festival, to compete for cash prizes totaling $3,000. The festival is produced by The Celadon Community Arts Trust Association and ARTworks, The Arts Council of Beaufort Port Royal & the Sea Islands. The goal of the May 20-22, 2011 juried show is to select and present the highest caliber of fine art and crafts to their knowledgeable and discriminating audience. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2011, and the application fee is $25. Please visit http://www.beaufortcountyarts.com/celadon.htm for show specifics, and for the online application. The festival venue is the beautiful Celadon Community on Ladys Island in Beaufort, SC. Artists will be surrounded by oak trees, ponds, and the architecture that is Celadon. OMAHA
Summer Arts Festival:

The mission of the Omaha Summer Arts Festival is to present a variety of high quality arts programs and exhibits in downtown Omaha for the general public to enjoy and appreciate. Application and jury fee must be submitted by midnight CST on Monday, January 10, 2011. The Omaha Summer Arts Festival is located in Downtown Omaha – Farnam Street from 10th to 15th Street. This location mixes the sophistication of the downtown Omaha skyline with the relaxing feel of the Gene Leahy park and lagoon. Enjoy trees, shade and waterfalls right in the middle of downtown Omaha. Approximately 135 artists will exhibit at the 2011 Summer Arts Festival. A total of 72 artists have been invited back from the 2010 show based on their onsite jury score. The remaining spaces will be filled by a jury panel that consists of up to four professionals with evaluating experience and one peer juror. For more information, visit their website!

MONMOUTH
Festival of the Arts:

The 41st Annual Monmouth Festival of the Arts, New Jersey’s largest art invitational, will take place April 9 through April 13, 2011 at Monmouth Reform Temple, 332 Hance Avenue, Tinton Falls. It begins with the Artists Reception on Saturday. The reception is a great opportunity to meet the artists, enjoy a catered cocktail party, and browse the works in all media by more than 200 artists. Visitors to the Opening Night Reception will also receive a ticket to attend other Festival activities, including artist demonstrations, children’s workshops, and evening series art lectures and music from Sunday through Wednesday. The application form plus a $20.00 non-refundable application fee for each medium made payable to MRT/MFA, must be received by the December 13, 2010 deadline. LOVE YOURSELF

Valentine’s Day has taken an odd turn at my house over the years. Gone are the roses, candy and candlelit dinners. In their place, my husband Jon and I now have some gourmet treat and a glass of wine and snuggle in for a good movie. It could be laziness on our parts, I suppose. But I prefer to think of it as comfort of knowing you are exactly where you want to be when you want to be there…unfettered by all the other expectations. This Valentine’s Day, be good to yourself and enter this next show by the deadline, February 14th, 2011.

Check out this Call for Entries for the 26th Annual Juried Competition known as the Tallahassee International. The entry fee is only $20, and academically juried shows are GREAT for your resume. Put your heart into it…

CALL for ENTRIES:
Tallahassee International 26TH Annual Juried Competition

The Tallahassee International is an annual juried competition organized by Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts. The competition is open to all media and is juried by a panel of faculty from within the College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists are eligible to submit works without regard to sex, race, creed or national origin. Artists must be 18 years of age or older (current FSU CVATD faculty or students may not enter).

MEDIA: All media is eligible.

DEADLINE: February 14, 2011

ENTRY FEE: There is a $20.00 entry fee. A maximum of two (2) works per person may be submitted.

AWARDS: The jurors select the award winners from the actual works of art, after the exhibition has been installed. The First Place winner will receive $1,000.00 and the Second Place winner will receive $500.00. A color catalog of the Tallahassee International is produced, and all artists who enter will receive a copy. Accepted artists will each receive a set of 12 complimentary catalogs.

JURY PROCESS: The competition is juried by a panel of faculty members from the Florida State University College of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance. Jurors select works based on their own merit and must agree the artist demonstrates skill within the chosen medium. Selections are made from the digital images, so it is imperative that quality images be provided to insure fair judging. Jurors and the FSU Museum reserve the right to reject, upon arrival, any work of unacceptable craftsmanship and quality not discernible in the image.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM: MoFA has a history of exciting projects—from lush painting to dynamic sculpture exhibitions, from challenging installations to provocative photography shows. Every season begins with an international competitive exhibition that embraces all media and every semester closes with the youth and exuberance of the graduating artist exhibitions.

They have examined the contact zone of Anglo and Native American cultures, the mystical side of Haitian folk painting, and the unsophisticated but intense works of outsider artists. The future promises exhibitions of equal caliber and interest.

BUFFALO…in brief.

When you think of Colorado and food, does it conjure images of snow bunnies and hot chocolate? Then clearly you need to revisit Colorado. When I think of Colorado, I think of Buffalo Burgers. Buffalo burgers, once a fringe food, have now found their place in everyday fare. In South Central Colorado, the buffalo burgers are unmatched. I wonder if there’s any chance buffalo will be on the menu at this next exhibit’s opening night…

Check out this Call for Entries for The Arts Center’s 14th National Juried & Invited Contemporary Exhibition at the Center for the Arts in Western Colorado. The entry fee is low, and I like the idea of a mix of invited and juried artists…that usually means a built in crowd for opening night. Take a look…

14th National Juried & Invited Contemporary Exhibition

Keeping with the tradition of the Contemporary Exhibit, juror Michael Chavez will select six to eight artists to join the exhibit as invited artists who will give us an exciting survey of established and emerging artists in the contemporary art fields of drawing, painting, photography and mixed media two-dimensional work.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists residing in the U.S.

MEDIA: Two-dimensional format in the disciplines of drawing, mixed media, painting, printmaking and photography. Artists may enter up to three works which use paint, photography, drawing materials, printmaking and mixed media as the focus of submissions.

ENTRY FEE: Non-refundable entry fees are $15 for one entry, $25 for two entries, and $30 for three entries, payable to WCCA upon entry.

DEADLINE: January 28, 2011

NOTIFICATION: March 17, 2011

AWARDS: $750 Best of Show, $450 First Place, $300 Second Place, and $250 Third Place

JUROR: Michael Chavez is the Curator of Exhibitions and Education at Foothills Art Center in Golden, Colorado. He has a BFA in sculpture from the University of Wyoming and an MFA in printmaking from the University of Kansas. Over the past 16 years he has worked at the Art Institute of Chicago, The Spencer Museum of Art and the University of Wyoming Art Museum. In addition to curatorial duties, Chavez is active in the Colorado art community serving on public art committees and judging several exhibitions for Colorado’s cultural institutions. Have you ever wondered why most women fill the family role of cook? (although not in my house) …But in the professional world most Chefs are men? Me too. I like being female, despite the issues…even in the South. Today I’m paying tribute to one of my favorite female Chefs, Cat Cora, who proves gender doesn’t matter…at least in this case. But we all know that gender does matter, especially in this next call for entries.

Gender Matters/Matters of Gender

Ever since Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro organized the collective Womanhouse project in San Francisco in 1972, as well as Judy Chicago’s 1979 Dinner Party, shows centering on women’s reality have become a staple in galleries nationwide.

Gender Matters/Matters of Gender, expands this tradition to include works by artists of both sexes who work from a consciousness of how gender is reflected in art, how the artist’s gender influences her or his medium, and how gender often affects the circumstances in which the artist creates. This show will include a range of artists who make art which explores sexual identity, evolutions in biological reproduction and art which is sometimes informed by an awareness of gender based craft and traditions.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to everyone. Entries must represent original works of art or design and represent or address the theme in some way.

MEDIA:

& non-traditional genre & media
(including video, sculpture, photography, painting, drawing, printmaking, etc.)

JUROR: Judith Tannenbaum is the first Richard Brown Baker Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. From 1986 until 2000, she served as curator, associate director, and interim director at the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

Tannenbaum has organized numerous exhibitions focusing on painting, photography, sculptural installations, and interdisciplinary work with a particular interest in connections between the visual and performing arts. Since moving to RISD, several projects, including “On the Wall: Wallpaper by Contemporary Artists” (2003), have focused on relationships between fine art and design.

Abstraction is defined as the process or result of generalization. In my house, the dinner discussion goes a little like this: “What do you want for dinner?” Which is often followed by “I don’t know. What do you want for dinner?” Which is then further followed by: ” Well, I know I don’t want pizza.” By the way, this abstract dinner notion of I-don’t-know-but-I-don’t-want-that, usually ends in pizza for dinner. Poetic, eh? Here’s a way to have a more productive abstract notion…

True Poetry: Abstractions

Abstract art uses a visual language of form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.

Western art was, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the nineteenth century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality.

The arts of cultures other than the European had become accessible and showed alternative ways of describing visual experience to the artist. By the end of the 19th century many artists felt a need to create a new kind of art which would encompass the changes taking place in technology, science and philosophy.

The sources from which individual artists drew their arguments were diverse, and reflected the social and intellectual preoccupations in all areas of Western culture at that time.

Abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art. This departure from accurate representation can be only slight, or it can be partial, or it can be complete.

Abstraction exists along a continuum.

Even art that aims for verisimilitude of the highest degree can be said to be abstract, at least theoretically, since perfect representation is likely to be exceedingly elusive.

Artwork which takes liberties, altering for instance color and form in ways that are conspicuous, can be said to be partially abstract. Total abstraction bears no trace of any reference to anything recognizable. In geometric abstraction, for instance, one is unlikely to find references to naturalistic entities.

Figurative art and total abstraction are almost mutually exclusive. But figurative and representational (or realistic) art often contains partial abstraction. Both Geometric abstraction and Lyrical Abstraction are often totally abstract. Among the very numerous art movements that embody partial abstraction would be for instance fauvism in which color is conspicuously and deliberately altered vis-a-vis reality, and cubism, which blatantly alters the forms of the real life entities depicted.

MEDIA: Open to two- and three-dimensional semi-abstract, non-objective to pure abstract works in all media by women artists from the international community.

SUBMISSION ONLINE:Submit jpgs of up to three of your works on their website. Please include an artist statement and a $30 entry fee.

JUROR: Sandra Perlow is a prolific artist interested in abstraction and pictorial space. She earned her BA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and an MA from the Illinois Institute of Design.

Perlow has shown her work internationally, including at Linda Warren Gallery, Harper College, Jean Albano Gallery, and the Rockford Art Museum. She is an active contributor to WMG and serves on its Advisory Board.

I frequently joke that I would eat anything that won’t run from me. (Maybe I just need a pair of these Waffle Sneakers from BBC.) But I must admit that how food is presented, it’s arrangement, if you will, makes a huge difference. I love petite little bites that cause me guilt because I know that I am disturbing a masterpiece. Speaking of masterpieces…

It will come as no surprise that this Call for Entries from Vermont Photo Space Gallery called The Arrangement conjures of the exquisite fusion of food and art…the art of presentation. Yes, I am that obsessed with food. But I know you will dig deeper for your own “Arrangement”…don’t forget Vermont Photo Space offers free framing & matting on accepted entries!

CALL FOR ENTRIES: The Arrangement

The tradition of still-life as subject matter has roots deep into the history of art, pre-dating photography as a medium by centuries.

Fine artists in all mediums, photography included, benefited from the total control they had over the final piece; the art making began with their arrangements of the mostly inanimate objects they intended to represent. As Vermont Photo Space Gallery owner Ken Signorello aptly points out, “…it is art squared, where one first creates a work of art and then another to preserve it.”

The history of still life in Photography is as old as the medium itself. Henry Talbot himself produced the first photographic images using the inanimate objects of still life. In its earliest days, utilizing still life as subject matter allowed for the lengthy exposures necessary for its initial technologies.

In the early 1900s, studies in line and form of object contributed to popular abstractions. In the 1950s, still-life concentrated on the kitsch, and re-emerged in the 90s after a few decades in obscurity, in perfect partnership with the new trendy super-saturated film stock. Overall, the genre has been largely ignored, despite periodic bouts of influence – surprising, for a photographic practice with so much potential.

What is still life today?

Vermont Photo Space wants you to show them your arrangements, from advertising to record photography, the abstract to the obvious. Whether you are an amateur or professional, you may have experienced your still-life photographs as some of your favorite images – Juror Paula Tognarelli wants to see them.

JUROR: Paula Tognarelli is the Executive Director and Curator of the Griffin Museum of Photography. The Griffin Museum of Photography’s mission is to promote an appreciation of photographic art and a broader understanding of its visual, emotional and social impact.

Tognarelli holds a M.S. in Arts Administration from Boston University; is a graduate of the New England School of Photography (Applied Program) and is a current candidate for her Masters in Education at Lesley University as a visual arts teacher.

Paula describes her photography as her native language. “I’ve always been more visual than vocal. I could draw a picture much faster than I could articulate a story in words. Photography made dialogue that much easier for me.”

Tognarelli is also a digital imaging specialist. She has done extensive postgraduate study in color management, color theory, digital photography and digital imaging processing. She has lectured on digital imaging throughout the United States and in Japan, representing Agfa and Polaroid Graphic Imaging. She has also been a speaker at the Seybold Conferences. She is a former member of the Xerox Technical Advisory Board. Paula was named by Printing Impressions magazine as one of twelve women who made a major contribution to the Graphic Arts/ Imaging industry.

RULES FOR PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Age: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry.

If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear on the submission form.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on VermontPhotoSpace.com or

2. Sent via email to submissions@VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to three images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Additional images may be submitted for an additional $5 US per image.

DEADLINE: Images and payment must be received by midnight EST on the submission closing date December 22, 2010.

RIGHTS: Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition and for display on VPS website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

Vermont Photo Space Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.

CALL for ENTRIES: 46th Annual National

SAY CHEESE (cake)!

It warms my heart that I have been able to feature so many great opportunities from my home state lately. I love art opportunities more than cheesecake…shocking, I know. The $10,000 in cash awards (including $2,000 for Best of Show) in this next show would buy a whole lotta cheesecake though.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Tennessee Art League for the 46th Annual Central South Art Exhibition National. Despite the name, which almost leaves the impression it is a Regional show, it is a NATIONAL Opportunity that you shouldn’t miss!

Call for Entries: Tennessee Art League

Founded by a group of Middle Tennessee artists in 1954, and later chartered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational institution, the Tennessee Art League has enriched the lives of thousands of artists and the community as a cultural center, educational facility and art gallery for fifty-six years.

In 1965, the League started its annual Central South Art Exhibition – now in its 46th year – which, with the generous support of the Friends of the Tennessee Art League, continues to be one of the oldest and most prestigious art competitions in the South and in the nation.

In its commitment to the community, the League provides numerous outreach programs that bring first and meaningful experiences in creating art, especially, to seniors and disadvantaged children. In all of its dynamic, community-oriented programs, the Tennessee Art League is truly the heart of the visual arts in Tennessee.

MEDIA: Acrylic, Colored Pencil, Graphite, Mixed-Media, Oil, Pastel, Pen & Ink, Photography, Pulled-Prints, Sculpture and Water-Media. All works must be signed on the front. Photography & Pulled-Prints must have the signature on the work, not on the mat.

NOTIFICATION: February 18, 2011

ENTRY FEE: An artist may enter up to 3 works for $35 for the first entry plus $10 for each additional entry. Tennessee Art League Members pay $25 for the first entry plus $10 for each additional entry.

AWARDS: $2000 Best in Show. Cash Awards total $10,000.

JUROR: Joseph H. Sulkowski began his studies as a painter at America’s oldest art school, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts founded in 1809. He then continued and finished his studies after five years at the venerable Art Students League of New York. There, he met his greatest influence and mentor Frank Mason, the foremost authority on the principles and techniques of the Old Masters, and became, in the very traditional sense of the word, his apprentice.

Mr. Sulkowski has received numerous awards including the AAPL Grand National Award, the Grumbacher Gold Medallion Award and the Best in Show Award at the Art in the Mountains exhibition sponsored by Southwest Art magazine. He is a signature member of the prestigious Society of Animal Artists, the National Society of Mural Painters, the National Arts Club, the American Artists Professional League, and he is a Life Member of the Art Students League of New York.

A CROCK FOR EVERY POT

I am the queen of the crock pot. I have Lemon Chicken in the crock pot as I write this post. I love Fall and Winter because they provide the perfect excuse to through lots of things in the crock pot and call is soup or chowder or stew. And in my kitchen next to the crock pot (when it is stored on top of my cabinets) is two of my favorite pieces of found-object assemblage–toasters covered in journal pages and a virtual crock pot of other brick-a-brack.

CALL for ENTRIES: Spare Parts for the Renaissance Center

The Renaissance Center in Dickson, TN has issued a call for assemblages and found-object artwork. Work can be three-dimensional and free-standing or two-dimensional and designed to hang on the wall.

The Renaissance Center’s Visual Arts department is committed to artistic performance, aesthetic appreciation and cultural understanding. They provide an educational resource for their community through course selections, gallery exhibitions and artist workshops.

DEADLINE: November 14, 2010

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee.

ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible, artists must be over 16 years of age. Submissions must be original work by the artist, and must be created within the past two (2) years. Accepted work must be ready for display (2-D works must be wired for hanging). If your work requires any special accommodations please detail this information on your Entry Form.

NOTIFICATION:
November 24, 2010

SHIPPING: Please note that delivery or shipping of accepted artwork to and from the exhibition is the responsibility of the artist. The Renaissance Center has the right to refuse to display any work felt unsuitable for a family-friendly environment or misrepresented in the application.

COMMISSION: A 25% commission is taken out of all art sale transactions conducted through the Renaissance Center. Images of accepted work will be used for marketing and documentation, giving credit to the artist.

Many of my readers are on the hunt for the holy grail…a show in NYC. And, while I have had NY shows, I am often excited by NYC shows because of the associated opportunity to eat food from street vendors. I can smell the various cooked meats wafting through the air as I work on this post. I trust all of you have more grounded, academic reasons for wanting to break into the NY arts scene. Here’s your opportunity.

Check out this open Call for Submissions from Dacia Gallery in NYC. They have an open submissions policy for monthly exhibits, and the entry fee is only $25 for up to TEN images. Take a chance…

Dacia Gallery has an open submission policy for their monthly exhibitions.

MEDIA: Painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, digital art and mixed media.

CURRENT DEADLINE:
November 21, 2010

SUBMISSION PROCESS: Please provide your artist bio, artist statement, resume and artwork listing (i.e. title, medium, dimensions and retail price for each artwork).

ENTRY FEE: You may submit up to 10 images for a curation fee of $25.00. Click Here for the Submission Form.

NOTIFICATION: If your artwork is selected for exhibition, they will notify you three to four weeks prior to the opening.

ABOUT THE GALLERY: Dacia Gallery, located in Lower East Side, Manhattan, supports and represents emerging and established national and international artists at its monthly-themed exhibitions. Dacia Gallery also offers art education programs in an intimate and constructive atmosphere to enhance the artistic development of new and seasoned artists. (continues below)
