I am frequently asked how and when the food obsession started. I can’t pinpoint when in my Banquet-fried-chicken-sackful-of-Krystals childhood that I fell in love with food, but if I had to venture a guess, I would say 1983. I was on vacation with family in Florida, and my father decided that it would be his treat to take us all to the restaurant at the Kapok Tree Inn in Clearwater, FL.

We were so overwhelmed by the wonderful, albeit obnoxiously decadent decor, my father refused menus and suggested the chef choose on our behalf. Much to our surprise, instead of grand courses of unpronounceable French food, out came fried chicken and green beens. It was that moment that I realized that my humble little fried chicken eating self could make every meal an adventure. This next call offers you an opportunity to be the chef…select a whole array of choices for the juror in photo essay format.

Fashioning Photography

Where do art and fashion meet? That’s the gray area they are looking to showcase for “Fashioning Photography.” Since the 1990’s, the two have benefited from constant cross-fertilization. As a population, we are taking fashion photography very seriously as a result.

Is it the droves of visitors that appear in museums and galleries with the Fashion Photography exhibit?

Is it the income available to Photographers who bend a little into the commercial realm?

Is it our fascination for lifestyle imaging that has created the booming magazine culture and therefore elevated the fashion spread to be endlessly alluring to the artist?

There is so much diversity and energy in contemporary fashion photography that artists everywhere are turning to it as a subject matter; it’s an obsession and a compulsion.

Fashion is fickle.

It changes its values constantly and the variety of fashion photograph is proof. Though “safe” images are preferred by most advertisers for magazine spots, there are no holds barred for the gallery setting. Whether it’s for music videos, lookbooks, catalogues, advertising and catwalk photography, or the personal portfolio, fashion photography is everywhere.

The styles are seemingly infinite, ever-evolving, and constantly reinventing themselves: staged tableaux (Steven Meisel), diarist approaches (Mario Sorrenti, Corinne Day), cinematic (Venetia Scott), critical and political (Nick Knight), high gloss and glamour (Karl Lagerfeld), iconographical (Craig McDean), shock (Clayton Cubitt), sexual (Steven Klein), psychological (Camille Vivier), surreal (Bela Borsodi), spectacle (Ellen Rogers), realism (Lina Scheynius) and the banal (Jonathan de Villiers).

What is your style?

JUROR: Bobby Mozumder, is both a Photographer, and Editor-in-Chief at FutureClaw Magazine, currently in its third year. A Rochester Institute of Technology graduate, Mozumder now lives and works in Washington D.C.

His fashion photography ranges from high-end glamour to diaristic. Whether high-end studio or location, Mozumder’s images incorporate exquisite lighting, intimate camera angles, dynamic framing, graphic overlays, and an approach to color that ranges from monochromatic to high-key black and white.

Across the gamut, his imagery is consistently calculated. Is it the influence of a background in computer architecture and engineering? Personal work aside, Vermont Photo Space is lucky to have his experience as Editor-in-Chief of FutureClaw Magazine extended to the jurying of “Fashioning Photography.” Mozumder is entrenched in the art, culture, and fashion of our time, engaging himself in Fashion Photography’s latest trends as he builds the FutureClaw brand as one of today’s most beautiful boutique magazines.

RULES FOR
PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:

Of special note: Vermont Photo Space is able to accept essays for this exhibition! So much of the genre appears as multi-page spreads, and they are thrilled to offer the opportunity to their exhibitors to submit the same.

Whether you are submitting single images or multiples as a story, Mozumder will consider your work as it is intended. Who knows, this exhibition may include a few very lucky photographers who present an outstanding fashion story in several images.

Age: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, a parent or legal guardian may make the submission for you.

Ownership: All submitted photos must have been taken by the photographer making the entry.

If you are a parent or legal guardian submitting for a minor, please make it clear on the submission form.

Digital Submissions: All submissions must be made by digital files through:

1. Upload on VermontPhotoSpace.com or

2. Sent via email to submissions (at) VermontPhotoSpace.com. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it along with an application form. There is a $5.00 surcharge for email entries.

3. Images should be as large as possible but no larger than 1280 pixels on the longest side, type jpg – set to the highest quality. DPI can be set to any number, but if you must specify something to go with 72 dpi.

FEES: Up to three images may be submitted for a fee of $20 US for on-line submission and $25 for email submission. Additional images may be submitted for an additional $5 US per image.

Images and payment must be received by midnight EST on the submission closing date February 16, 2011. (Editor’s Note: Extended from 2/14 to 2/16 as of Feb 9th)

RIGHTS: Photographers retain all rights to their work, except for submissions accepted for exhibition: artists grant Vermont Photo Space the right to use their images to promote the exhibition and for display on VPS website and for inclusion in an exhibit catalog.

Vermont Photo Space Gallery provides free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work, and retain all rights.

I am regularly told that I am nauseating optimistic. Oh well. The only negative I like to see are the chocolate side of a black and white cookie. So sue me. This next call should give you ample reason to contemplate both sides of the artistic issue …or both sides of the cookie.

CALL for ENTRIES: The 26th Annual Positive/Negative National Juried Art Exhibition*

The Slocumb Galleries at East Tennessee State University under the Department of Art & Design is pleased to announce the Call for Entries for the 26th Annual Positive Negative National Juried Art Exhibition. In its 26th year, the Positive Negative annual juried art exhibit has consistently provided an avenue for the promotion & appreciation of contemporary art in the region. Established in 1985, it has provided the academic and surrounding local communities diverse perspectives in art.

ELIGIBILITY: The 26th Annual Positive/Negative National Juried Art Exhibition is open to all artists 18 years and older residing in the United States. All work must be original and completed within the last two years. Work previously submitted to the Positive/Negative or exhibited at the Slocumb Galleries may not be submitted. Current students and employees of East Tennessee State University are not eligible to apply.

MEDIA AND SIZE: All 2D, 3D and video art are eligible. Due to space and logistical considerations, installation and performance art are not eligible for submission. Work will not be judged in media categories. Work using materials hazardous to the health and safety of the public will not be accepted. Work should not exceed 5 feet in any direction and preferably weigh under 20 lbs. All 2D work must be ready for hanging with appropriate hardware and hanging instructions. All 3D work must have stable base and installation instructions, please indicate front of work on the photo. Suspended work from the ceiling or with elaborate installation is discouraged.

JUROR: Sammie Nicely graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1975 and makes art that reflects the ceremonies of African Diaspora, working in clay, mixed media and photography and using culturally diverse techniques to create glazes and textures in his ceramic pieces.

Believing that art serves as a common ground for communication and an opportunity for each person to bring his/her own identity into play, Nicely has taught at public and private schools throughout the southeastern United States and the Caribbean and has been exhibited and collected nationally and internationally.

His work has been included in the publications “Regional Black Arts Directory” (1983), “Southern Highland Handicraft Guild” (1992), “Visions of My People: Sixty Years of African American Art in Tennessee” (1997), “Contemporary Ceramics 1999: The Work of African American Ceramic Artists” (1999), “Self-Taught, Outsider, and Folk Art: A Guide to American Artists, Locations and Resources” (2000), and “Diversity in Unity: Contemporary African American Ceramics” (2004). His artworks are in the collections of AT&T, Tennessee Valley Authority, Carroll Reece Museum, and the African American Museum in Wilberforce, Ohio.

Can you imagine liking something enough to do it 13 times in a row? I have an unnatural, and probably unhealthy, addiction to lamb, but I couldn’t have it 13 times in a row. The folks producing this next call for entries, clearly love your artwork more than I love lamb chops, because this is their 13th Annual Call.

Despite all my talk about butter, chocolate and all things yummy, we really do eat fairly healthy at my house. We limit excessive intake of fats, processed white sugar and foods with unnecessary chemical additives. I usually insist to avoid the premature expansion of my rear end and to offset a few other bad habits, ha. Organic bananas are a must. No they aren’t alway the prettiest, and yes, they spoil faster, but nothing tastes more like a banana. Here’s your chance to get back to something natural …

CALL for ENTRIES: Arte Natura

SlowArt Productions presents the group thematic exhibition, Arte Natura. This exhibition will focus on art inspired by the natural world and will be held at the Limner Gallery.

Eligible are all art forms relating to, or gaining inspiration from the world of nature. Landscapes, skyscapes, flowers, vegetables, fruits and animals are all eligible. Human images are permitted only as an elemental part of the natural environment. All artist interpretations of the natural world from the realist to the abstract and conceptual will be reviewed and considered.

ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 96″ no wider than 120″. Sculptural work must fit through a standard height, 36″wide entry door.

DEADLINE: The final postmarked deadline is February 28, 2011. Entries must be postmarked or submitted via email by this date.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance no later than March 31, 2011. Results will be posted on or before this date at: http://www.slowart.com/results. Notification will be made via email and/or by mail with the return of materials in the SASE provided by the artist. Artists who do not include the SASE because they do not want their submission materials returned must provide a self addressed stamped #10 (letter size) envelope if they wish to be notified by mail.

All artists who provide a working email address will be notified via email, if no email or return envelope is provided, artists will only be notified if accepted to exhibit. Type or print your email address clearly, if a mistake is made reading it you will not be notified. Read the notification page for details of the notification policy.

ENTRY FEES: There is a $35.00 entry fee for one to four artworks entered, presentation is by digital files, prints or 35mm slides. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional artwork above four. Details of 2D artwork count as an additional artwork. Sculptors may provide one additional view per artwork without cost. Artists accepted to exhibit will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments may be by check or money order payable to SlowArt Productions, or by credit card using PayPal.

SALES: All works in the show must be for sale. The gallery will take a 30 % commission on all sales. Sale price is determined by the artist.

EXHIBITION and AWARDS:
Winning artists will be featured in a group exhibition at the Limner Gallery, May 5 – 28, 2011. The exhibition will also be displayed on the Limner Gallery web site.

One artist will be awarded a two page display in Direct Art Volume #18, Fall 2011 issue. Two artists will be awarded a single page display. Direct Art is distributed to bookstores across the USA including Borders and Barnes and Noble.

I love things in small packages. For many of my friends it conjures images of little blue boxes from Tiffany’s. For me, you can just send little blue boxes of Mariebelle chocolates and keep the jewels for yourself. This next Call may inspire your own small package.

Check out this Call for Entries from Harper College for their 34th Annual National Juried Exhbition of Small Works. Small is all about perspective, but Harper College see it as no larger than 22″ at its largest dimension. That sure includes a large amount of artwork, so sieze your opportunity…

34th Annual National Juried Art Exhibition

The College’s annual national juried exhibition highlights work selected from entries by artists from across the country. The show typically features a wide array of media ranging from photography, prints, and painting to metal, clay, glass, and fiber. The Harper College Educational Foundation sponsors this exhibit.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists over 18 living in the USA are eligible.

SIZE & MEDIA: In its largest dimension, individual artwork must be no greater than 22 inches including frame if applicable. All media excluding
jewelry, film and video/digital video are eligible. Weight limitation of 45 pounds. No work that requires special installation or instructions will be accepted.

Everytime I make potato pancakes …and inevitably burn, mangle or drop them …I smile knowing Julia Child got there before me. CALL for ENTRIES: Picturing Life as a Woman

Women have been actively involved with photography since the medium’s inception in 1839. The barriers to their participation were lower than in the other arts, and recognition often came faster. Yet women and their photographs have not been as visible as they should have been in view of their numbers and past influence. Only in fairly recent exhibitions and critical writings have women’s work in photography received due consideration.

Diane Arbus, Roni Horn, Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith and thousands more women use their cameras as instruments of revelation – often about themselves. In the process they challenge assumptions about what it means to be and be seen.

ELIGIBILITY: This International Call for Entry invites women from around the world to submit photographs that demonstrate a smart, critical take on women with cameras in this day of a more open and subtle notion of gendered identity.

Submissions are only limited by your imagination and may cover a broad range of challenging, personal, emotional, and political issues facing women today. Their work-life, home, family, friends, relationships, life partners, homosexual, heterosexual, politics, equal rights, stereotypes, causes, roles and wishes.

In 3rd grade, I took “European Art Lessons” for one hour per week. They weren’t like sauer kraut, foie gras or kidney pie that immediately hint at their origin. I never figured out exactly what made the lessons European, but I did learn if you overwork soft pastels, you will end up with a brown mess. They were worth their cost in wiener schnitzel. I hope this next Call will inspire you to create some un-brown work.

7th Annual Northeast National Pastel Exhibition

The Arts Center/Old Forge will present it’s 7th annual Northeast National Pastel Exhibition. It has fast become a highlight of their annual exhibition calendar with thousands of visitors a year from the Northeast and beyond enjoying this varied and colorful display.

The Northeast National Pastel Exhibition has succeeded in educating and thrilling exhibit goers with works from some of the nation’s foremost pastel artists. As the exhibition grows, so does its reputation. More artists than ever have submitted work in the hopes of being selected last year.

JUROR OF SECLECTION: Wende Caporale is a nationally recognized leading pastel and oil portrait artist. Her special ability for capturing likenesses of children and families has brought her much acclaim including the New York Times praising Wende as a leader in the field.

Wende is the author of the book Painting Children’s Portraits in Pastel which has been selling worldwide since its publication in 2001.

In addition, her work has been featured in American Artist, International Artist, The Pastel Journal, Portrait Highlights and Pastel Artist International magazines. Wende’s work has been shown in museums and national exhibitions, garnering awards and honors including a designation of Master Pastelist from the Pastel Society of America.

JUROR OF AWARDS: Lucy Petrie is recognized primarily for her highly realistic images, each marked by vivid color and intensity. Dr. Petrie studied art and was selected for her first juried show in 2004.

Since 2004, she has won numerous awards in national and international competitions, including many at the Northeast National Pastel Exhibition, for which her work has been selected in all six previous years.

In 2007, Lucy was elected to Pastel Society of America signature membership, and in 2009 Lucy received the Master Circle Award from the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS). Her paintings have appeared in The Pastel Journal, American Artist and more. “Painting is about learning how to see and using that skill to unravel the mystery of representing what’s seen on the paper. CALL for ENTRIES: Half the Sky

Many folks feel the holidays are time for celebration. I think the secret to a happy life is finding cause for celebration everyday. It won’t surprise you that my family celebrates with food. One of my favorite celebratory foods is pesto…on just about anything, especially pizza. This next Call gives you reason to celebrate…women, just in time for Women’s History Month.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Tall Grass Arts Association called Half the Sky in celebration of Women’s History Month (March). The entry fee is low, and you don’t have to be a woman to enter…just celebrate them.

CALL for ENTRIES: Half the Sky

Chinese proverb: “Women hold up half the sky.” Women’s History Month grew out of a small-town school event in Sonoma County, California in 1978. In 1981, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) co-sponsored a joint Congressional resolution proclaiming a national Women’s History Week.

In 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to a month and March was declared Women’s History Month. Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society. In 2011, Tall Grass Arts Association will host a national, juried exhibit celebrating Women’s History Month.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists ages 18+ are eligible. All media will be considered. Original work only. All work submitted must reflect the theme of the exhibit – the contributions of women to history, culture or society. All work must be for sale.

Work over 75 pounds must be hand delivered, installed and picked up by the artist or representative. Work that requires more than 1 hour to install must be installed by artist. Work may not have been exhibited previously at Tall Grass.

DEADLINE: Postmark by January 12, 2011 or hand-deliver by January 14, 2011

ENTRY FEE: There is a $35 non-refundable jury fee required, per artist. Please make checks payable to Tall Grass Arts Association.

JUROR: Sabrina Raaf is a Chicago-based artist working in experimental sculptural media and photography. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions at Mejan Labs (Stockholm), Stefan Stux Gallery (NYC), Ars Electronica (Linz), Opel Villas Foundation Art Center (Rüsselsheim), Museum Tinguely (Basel), Espace Landowski (Paris), Artbots 2005 (Dublin), San Jose Museum of Art, Kunsthaus Graz, ISEA (Helsinki), Klein Art Works (Chicago), The Lab (San Francisco) and Painted Bride Center (Philadelphia).

Raaf is the recipient of a Creative Capital Grant in Emerging Fields (2002) and an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship (2005 & 2001). Reviews of her work have appeared in Art in America, Contemporary, Chicago Tribune Sunday Magazine, Leonardo, www.lab71.org, The Washington Post, and New Art Examiner. She received an MFA in Art and Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1999) and is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

ABOUT THE TALL GRASS ARTS ASSOCIATION: The mission of the Tall Grass Arts Association is “to promote public education and appreciation of the arts; to encourage artists; and to support high quality art through exhibitions, sales, classes and special programs available to the public of all ages.”

The Association provides space for artists to offer their works of art for sale, invites school groups into the gallery for docent-led tours and projects, and operates a school that offers classes to children and adults and fundraises to provide scholarships to low-income students, including classes taught off-site at Glenwood School and the Jones Center in Chicago Heights and more.

Vacation time is over, and I am in a food coma. I may never look at sweet potato casserole the same way again. For those of you that survived the holidays without a permanent taste aversion, this next call is another opportunity in NYC.

Check out the Call for Entries from The Ernest Rubenstein Gallery and the Educational Alliance called The Urban Situation. The entry fee is very low, but the number of slots they have to fill is equally low. Could be a great opportunity, but do your homework so you know what kind of work they want!

CALL for ENTRIES: The Urban Situation

The Ernest Rubenstein Gallery – Educational Alliance is seeking submissions for “The Urban Situation” a group exhibition of 20 artworks. Open to artists working in any 2-dimensional medium (not photography). Opening reception Thursday, Feb. 10, 6-8pm.

The Urban Situation is a constant backdrop for artists whether abstract or figurative, conceptual or post-modern. The particular energy, light, scale, stress, grit, incident or inhabitants of the urban environment provide source material for all genres.

ELIGIBILITY: There is a limit of 3 entries per artist. Entrants must be at least 21 years of age. Selected artists are responsible for all shipping arrangements both to and from the exhibit.

MEDIA: Painting, drawing, and collage maximum 60”x 48” are eligible.

DEADLINE: December 30, 2010 at 5pm

NOTIFICATION: January 201, 2011

ENTRY FEE: There is a $25 submission fee (for up to 3 images) by credit card, Money Order or check payable to the Educational Alliance. You may pay by credit card by calling 646-395-4235 before January 4, 2011.

About the Educational Alliance: The Ernest Rubenstein Gallery is a distinct and impressive public space at the core of The Educational Alliance, a settlement house on the Lower East Side. In recent years a wide range of artists have participated in exhibits including: Polly Appelbaum, Lynda Benglis, Peter Halley, Yvonne Jacquette, Peter Halley, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Glenn Ligon, Carrie Moyer, Tom Otterness, Sheila Pepe, Judy Pfaff and Kiki Smith.

The Art School & Gallery provides instruction and cultural enrichment to people of all ages. In the gallery, they present exhibits of emerging and established artist, alumni and student artworks. The art school offers courses in: ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and welding for beginning to experienced artists. Started in 1895 to provide arts enrichment to young immigrants and neighborhood residents it soon became known for its quality program attracting people from all over the city. Among the artists who studied or taught there are Louise Nevelson, Adolph Gottlieb, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Jules Olitski, Leonard Baskin, Peter Blume, Chaim Gross, Ben Shahn and Moses Soyer.

We know that I love a theme…from food to art shows. I went grocery shopping the other day and EVERYTHING I bought was marked “bold” or “hot” or “spicy.” However, I truly understand the privilege of interpretation. My version of hot (4 peppers on the Thai scale) is certainly different that my eleven year old that thinks Bold Manwich is spicy, ha. This next call is completely up to YOUR interpretation and choice. The options are wide open…

CALL for ENTRIES: Wide Open 2

BWAC has a truly unique gallery – a massive Civil War-era warehouse on the Red Hook waterfront in Brooklyn, NY. Its enormous space affords them the opportunity to exhibit really huge work, and they welcome it.

They will be using 8,000 square feet for this show to exhibit work from artists from all around the country, work in all size, subject, and medium (it’s completely wide open).

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all residents of the U.S. and its Territories 18 years of age or older.

MEDIA: This is a juried exhibition for artists working in all traditional and non-traditional 2D and 3D media, except for film/video. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. Note: Crafts, kit work or reproductions after original works in other media (such as giclee), unless used as part of a mixed media work, will not be considered. No work done in class or under supervision is eligible.

ENTRY FEE: Early Bird Submissions (through January 4, 2011): $45.00 for up to three (3) images ($60.00 if mailed) plus $5.00 for each additional image.
Submissions between January 5 and January 17: $65 for up to three (3) images, plus $5 for each additional image. All submissions must be online during this period.

DEADLINE: All entries must be registered/received by midnight, January 17, 2011.

NOTIFICATION: Via e-mail on Friday, January 28, 2011, or mailed on that date for entries without e-mail information.

JUROR: Nathan Trotman, Associate Curator, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of Art, joined the curatorial staff in 2001. He holds a Master of Philosophy from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where he focused on performance, photography, and time-based art, and is a graduate of the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program.

Among the exhibitions he has curated are Haunted: Contemporary Photography / Video / Performance; Catherine Opie: American Photographer, and he served as assistant curator for Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso: Time, Truth and History; exhibitions on David Smith, Richard Serra and Constantin Brancusi; and the acclaimed Matthew Barney: The Cremaster Cycle.

AWARDS:

BEST of SHOW: $1000.00 At the Opening Reception, the artist whose work is juried as ‘Best of Show’ by Nathan Trotman will receive a $1,000 cash prize and a complimentary one-year BWAC membership.

PEOPLES’ CHOICE: $500.00 The artist whose work is voted ‘Best’ by attendees at the Show Opening will receive a $500 cash prize and a complimentary one-year BWAC membership

CURATORS’ CHOICE: $250.00 The artist whose work the Show Curators, (Anna Annus Hagen, Therese Urban, Scott Henstrand) choose for excellence will receive a $250.00 cash prize and a complimentary one-year BWAC membership.

CERTIFICATES: Certificates will be awarded in the following categories: Painting: Best in Oil, Acrylic and Watercolor; Photography: Best in Traditional and Digital formats; Pastel / Drawing / Print / Graphic media: Best in Classical and Computer-aided; and Best in Mixed Media, Sculpture, Assemblage, and Installation.
