Strawberries have been on sale for $2.50 a quart this week, and blueberries are $1.49 a pint even though they are out of season. That can only mean one thing, local fruit is coming in soon. Every year my grocer discounts imported berries to make way for local produce and I cannot wait to eat every color of Spring– red, blue & green. This next Call wants to see all of your color, regardless of season. And someone will win a $500 grant as well…

THEME: Color “artwork that represents an artist’s unique interpretation and treatment of a subject as it is communicated through the applications of colors. The dynamic of color, as it provides an abstract language expressing emotion and energy, is a visual statement–perhaps a sharp wit–as an interpretation and reflection of the artist’s environmental perceptions and unique voice.”

I eat SO MANY tacos. Because I travel so often, I find picking a good restaurant, be it counter service or table, has odds not unlike roulette (37 to 1). But I have consistently had great tacos, nearly everywhere. I rarely meet anyone that doesn’t like a good taco. They are like the great joiners of people. Aside from being bad eating-while-driving food (due to the mess), I can eat a taco almost anywhere with almost anyone. Differences seem to disappear. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the answer to embracing our differences was a simple as the ordering from the local taco truck? THEME: Proposal artwork image must convey an environmental theme promoting sustainability and that aluminum cans are “infinitely recyclable” and the most sustainable package.

His passion for photographing graffiti gained him publication in outlets such as Brooklyn Street Art Blog, Graffiti Art Magazine & Juxtapoz. Once in Oakland Brock worked as an intern at Hamburger Eyes and as an art handler at White Walls & Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. As a supporter & facilitator of the Bay Area Art community, Brock continues his “extended” art education by working as an art handler at various galleries and museums both locally and out of state.

AWARDS: Artists selected by the guest juror will receive a 2-page spread including a brief bio, website, and 2 images in print and digital formats. JUROR: Founder of the highly controversial Coagula Art Journal, Mat Gleason is an internationally recognized art critic and curator of contemporary art. Gleason’s sharp analytical tongue and ability to articulate aesthetics served him well in analyzing and critiquing competitive body painting in the Ru Paul-hosted “Skin Wars: Fresh Paint”, the television series where he sat as one of the regular judges in its lone season on network television.

He has lost count of the number of exhibitions he has curated and while blogging, writing about art and continuing to publish a milder print version of his magazine, operates Coagula Curatorial, his gallery of contemporary art on Chung King Road in L.A.’s Chinatown. A southern California native who hates all of the Bay Area’s sports teams, especially the A’s, he lives with his wife (artist Leigh Salgado) and dog (Aybar) near the city of Vernon, just south of Downtown L.A.
