Sherry is a magical ingredient. I’m not a fan of the aperitif, but you’ll always find sherry in my cupboard. All of it smells like fingernail polish remover to me, so I’ve just give in and started buying the salt-fortified cooking version. Why is it magical, you ask? Sherry is what makes french onion soup taste like french onion soup. Trust me on this one. JUROR: Fran Forman studied art and sociology at Brandeis University, received an MSW in psychiatric social work, and then an MFA from Boston University. She has held a succession of positions in the field of graphic design, book cover art and web design. Between professional life and raising two daughters, Fran continued to create her personal art, combining her illustrative and photographic skills with a passion for surrealism, paradox, illusion, assemblage, the non-human world, and the dislocations of time and place.

Fran is a Resident Scholar at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis, a recipient of several grants, and teaches digital collage at various colleges in Boston. Her work has been exhibited widely, both locally and internationally. She has won many significant awards and her work appears in many journals, online blogs, several art books, and adorns the covers of many books.

AWARDS: 45 to 50 images will be selected for exhibition and a Blurb full color catalogue. Awards are $325 for Juror’s Award, $250 and an exhibition catalogue for Director’s Award, 5 Honorable Mentions each receiving an exhibition catalogue & $100 for Visitors’ Choice Award.

SALES: A Smith Gallery will retain 40% commission out of the sales price.

I have lost track of the number of pepper mills I have owned. The best one I ever owned featured one-handed operation. It eventually broke after being dropped one too many times, and I could never find the same one again. The dilemma is that they either grind the pepper too fine or too coarse, and the adjusters never turn quite far enough. Ground too finely, pepper will dominate the flavor of any meal. Ground too coarsely, peppercorns will give your guests a crunchy, spicy surprise in the middle of an otherwise well-balanced meal. It is all about the size. So is this next Call. Take a look…

There’s more to Iowa than corn. Corn is only harvested from mid-June to mid-August in the Hawkeye State, but carrots in a rainbow of colors can be found farm fresh from May through November. Voices X, the anniversary exhibit of Voices from the Warehouse, is a month-long art exhibit and cultural event located in a re-purposed industrial warehouse within Dubuque, Iowa’s Historic Millwork District. Voices from the Warehouse is a grass-roots art movement wrought by distinctive artists and like-minded advocates.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all 18+ artists

MEDIA: All media–ideally suited for the transformative art experience, which includes installations, video, two- and three-dimensional art.

DEADLINE: March 1, 2014

NOTIFICATION: April 15, 2014

ENTRY FEE: No fee for 5 to 10 images

AWARDS: Voices X is pleased to support the artists by offering a $300 stipend to each artist selected for the show, which will take place September 6 through October 4, 2014. Prizes have been increased for this anniversary event to $2,500 Best in Show cash prize, with $1,000 and $500 for place and show.

I loosely plan a weekly menu each week by making sure there are at least seven proteins, seven green vegetables and a handful of starches available in the kitchen. From those offerings, I try to make every week different. But, since the proteins are almost always a couple of versions of same pork, beef, chicken and/or fish, making 52 different menus a year is a stretch. And, I might add that there are only so many ways to prepare zucchini & broccoli. JUROR: Born in New York and educated at the acclaimed Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Vera Barnett moved to Texas in 1985. She began using pool toys as still life subjects, but felt a desire for more emotional and personal subjects. Her solution was to create her own models from sewn plastic. Barnett’s process yields paintings injected with emotions that are authentically human, yet fabricated through completely synthetic materials.

AWARDS: Cash awards totaling over $3,000 will be given out for 1st through 3rd places and purchase awards! Awards will be announced at the opening reception on May 3, 2014.

SALES: BAL retains a 30% commission of the sale price of work sold during the exhibition. BAL will collect payment and state sales tax.

CALL for ENTRIES: Ivyside

Cheese food is not cheese. You’re allowed to like American cheese; feel free. But, don’t take comfort in the idea that you are eating a natural cheese. It is manufactured from milk, whey, milkfat, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, saturated oils; emulsifiers, salt & artificial coloring–and that’s assuming you aren’t consuming a diet variety. Think of it this way…if the cheese can’t stand alone, then maybe it shouldn’t have the spotlight in any of your meals. This next Call is looking for a big cheese (or six) to put in the spotlight. Are you a big cheese?

Check out this Call for Entries from Penn State Altoona (Altoona, PA) for the Ivyside Juried Art Competition for solo shows at the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. The entry fee is only $10 for up to 24 images. This is a great academic opportunity at a really low price!

JUROR: Paula Tognarelli is the Executive Director & Curator of the Griffin Museum of Photography (Winchester, MA). The museum houses 3 galleries and maintains 4 satellite gallery spaces and several virtual on-line galleries as well. (continued below)

Tognarelli is responsible for producing over 60 exhibitions a year at the Griffin and its surrounding satellite spaces. She holds an M.S. in Boston University, BA from Regis College, and is a graduate of the New England School of Photography. She has juried & curated exhibitions internationally. She is on the advisory board of the New England School of Photography and the Flash Forward Festival Boston.

AWARDS: The juror will select Gold Medal and Silver Medal awards. All Gold Medal award winners will be in the San Francisco Exhibition.

$6,000 (USD) in awards will be granted as follows: 1st Place $3,000, 2nd Place $2,000 and 3rd Place $1,000. 3 photographers will have their work featured in our Portfolio Selections series.

Isn’t it funny how certain seasons suddenly bring about the craving for very specific foods? It never occurs to most people to even think about fruitcake until we start seeing winter holiday decorations appear. My German in-laws (3rd generation via Wisconsin) save kuchen for Christmas. Kuchen is German & approximately translates to “cake,” but I know it as a sort of custard & jam filled sweet-dough, low-rise cake that screams Christmas. Much to my surprise, it is also the state dessert of South Dakota–the home of this next Call. This is a beautiful venue, by the way…

JUROR: John Rychtarik, a South Dakota native, received his B.S. in Art Education from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD; and attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD. John then spent several years teaching art throughout South Dakota to students of all ages in public schools, South Dakota Arts Council programs, and Native American schools.

Rychtarik later transitioned into the museum field, where he worked for 35 years at the Robinson State Museum, the Siouxland Heritage Museums and the South Dakota Art Museum. During his 11.5 years as the Exhibitions Coordinator at the South Dakota Art Museum, he booked, organized, curated, and installed almost 150 exhibitions. John is also an artist himself. His work has been exhibited throughout South Dakota, including a solo exhibit at the Visual Arts Center of the Washington Pavilion.

AWARDS: $1,000 first place, $500 second place, $250 third place
