MAMA

I don’t eat food I can’t identify.  I love it when readers send me foods, but one of you clearly has it out for me.   A couple of weeks ago, someone sent a handful of chiltepin peppers–extremely hot, measuring between 50,000-100,000 Scoville units (jalepenos are 3,500–8,000).  It took several days to research it.  Rest assured, I have dried them for use in chili or Thai food sometime soon.  I’ll keep you updated.  This next Call hails from Texas where the chiltepin is the State native pepper.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Four Points Contemporary (Texas) for their 3rd Bi-annual Open juried online international art competition.  I love that the juror is an electrical engineer/poet.  Increase your online exposure…

“What do you want for dinner?”  I have learned to truly detest those six words.  I appreciate choices, but I struggle with unlimited choices.  After 16 years, my husband has learned to ask, “Do you want a steak-topped salad or roasted chicken for dinner?”  That decision, I can make.  This next Call hasn’t narrowed it down for you, but I’m hoping you’re better at decision making than I am.  Plus, I suspect you’ll just  love this magazine…

Wheat is in EVERYTHING.  Even marshmallows are often off-limits because of a common form of flour-coating to prevent clumping.  Even if I weren’t allergic to wheat, why would I want it in everything?  It is in all of your soups, your nacho cheese and even in your caramel-colored roast beef.  It really pisses me off.  Just saying.  This next Call wants to know what YOU have to bitch about.  Take a look…

“If you’re awake & breathing, you know there’s a war waging against our gender.  Has been for 10,000 years or longer.

From the atrocities of various (and perpetual) war zones, to the workplace, courtrooms, behind closed doors, and even congress, women aren’t treated with or given the dignity and equanimity they deserve.

B*tch Fest will provide a platform for those artists courageous enough to confront these issues of social justice. There is plenty to bitch about. Come share your struggle with us. — from thehaggussociety.org

I’m fascinated by the prospect of using veggie oil as an alternative fuel for powering cars & heating homes.  I’m not ready to jump to the change; however, I do have some fundamental questions.  Are fast food joints going to start get paid for their waste oil? What about the pesticides used on the crops from which the oil was processed?  The name of this next Call probably doesn’t indicate the heating source, but we can always hope, right?  Always investigate…

I’m craving purple potatoes.  Potatoes have become scarce in my house lately.  Paranoid about my family’s long history of diabetes, we are trying to limit our starch intake to see if my current symptoms can be controlled through diet.  Because we already cut out gluten, I don’t really miss bread.  We’ve never consumed a lot of rice & prefer spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles to pasta.  But oh how I miss the potatoes– the beautiful, majestic purple ones particularly.  I’m sneaking them in as the crust for quiche & pot pies, but the chips & fries & mash are all gone.  I have to reserve all things majestic for this next call.  Love this one…
