Can someone bring me a mango ice shave? I have been desperately trying not to whine about the heat, but you could stave off my whining with a shave ice. Really. Don’t bring me a snow cone; it isn’t the same thing. It is about the location of the syrup. In a shave ice/ice shave, the shaving creates a snow-like texture that absorbs the syrup. In a snow cone, the ice is crushed causing all the syrup to settle to the bottom. Don’t try a shave ice unless you are prepared to never eat a snow cone again. Really. I don’t drink coffee. For all of my open-palate talk, there are things I am simply not interested in consuming. Coffee is one of those things. For many of you, this is heresy, sacrilege, blasphemy. I suspect it would be like my reaction to people that don’t like chocolate–incomprehensible. But, I break my own rules. When I go to the “home” of something, I feel obligated to partake. Don’t you have to drink coffee in Washington? Maybe I could just visit Java Jive and listen to a few tunes in the giant coffee pot instead. Or consume a little art just a couple of hours down the interstate. I’m game. How about you?

JUROR: Jennifer Navva Milliken has served as the Curator of Craft at the Bellevue Arts Museum, in Bellevue, Washington, since June of 2014. An expert in contemporary art, studio craft, and design, Milliken has also held positions at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

In 2012, Milliken founded INTER ALIA projects, an independent curatorial firm. She has contributed to numerous exhibition catalogues, and written for Art Jewelry Forum and Domus magazine.

AWARDS: The award for 1st Place includes $500 & a solo exhibit during the 2017/2018 or 2018/2019 academic year, the 2nd Place award is $300, the 3rd Place award is $200. In addition there will be three Honorable Mention awards.

Are you eating flowers? I do occasionally, but only when I can buy them directly from the grower or grow them myself due to pesticides. One of my favorite edible blooms, second only to zucchini blossoms, may be sweet violets. I like to make a simple syrup infused with violets then make a subtle glaze for sugar cookies or a vinegar for a salad of bitter greens. I need a food replicator. The replicator from the Quark Bar (Star Trek) would be a stand out in any kitchen. Although I have to admit that using 3D printing technology for food gives me pause. I can’t wrap my brain around the ingredients that could take so little space that it would fit in my kitchen but yet be able to create an almost infinite variety of foods. Freaky, no? JUROR: Judy Gardner is a Colorado artist and educator. She is Director of Alchemical Eye Studio, a printmaking and digital fabrication studio located in Colorado. Gardner earned a BFA in Graphic Design at Northern Arizona University & an MH in Fine Art & Theater at the University of Colorado. For many years she has worked with 3D visualization software creating images for architects, engineers, manufacturers and court room exhibits. Now, with the availability of 3D printers at the consumer level, she has launched wholeheartedly into 3D printing as a means of artistic expression. She currently teaches Printmaking and Electronic Imaging at Regis University. Gardner’s artwork has been featured in shows across the country including current shows at the Wailoa Center in Hilo, Hawaii & at the Arvada Center in Arvada, CO.

Wes Price is also a Colorado artist and educator with 19+ years professional experience in anatomy illustrations for print, app and web-based interactive teaching modules. He was awarded a M.S. in Medical Illustration by the Medical College of GA (1 of only 4 accredited graduate programs of its kind in North America). Price is one of approx. 250 Certified Medical Illustrators in the world. Currently, Price is an Associate Professor of Media Arts at the Art Institute of Colorado.

I don’t share well. I don’t share anything well, but food is the worst. I am not proud of it. Maybe it is an only child thing. I can logically know that a dish will be too much for me, but I will still not agree to share instead. If I agree to a lets-get-one-of-each-and-share deal, we have to quite literally cut them in half upon arrival & exchange the halves. Otherwise I spend the meal obsessing about whether or not my husband will eat more than his half. I fall short of counting french fries–but just barely. THEME: “RED” The judges will be looking for artwork where the artist’s interpretation of any subject is enhanced by the use of the color red, whether it is a single dot of red or completely red image.

The color red can imply many emotions and feelings, for example: power, heat, love, sexuality, anger, joy, war, etc. It can be used to enhance, emphasize or be a focal point in the artwork. The artwork can be expressed from representational, expressionistic, surrealistic and or abstraction.

I have been searching for my place–in art, in music, in food, in the world. I have a long history of wanting to do everything at all times. I want to get it all right, experience it all, eat it all, see it all, do it all. As a result, I often get none of them quite right. Silly to some, I believe the answer is geographical. I continue to seek smaller spaces and places–one town smaller than the next. Now I seek space, acres inside the next smallest town. Not isolation so much as controlled interaction. Space to think. A sense of place can be an essential element in artists’ creative life, and frequently informs their subject matter, materials, style, approach, studio location, and more. Whether it be ones childhood “primal landscape,” full of memories of home and family, or the pull of a dramatic landscape, or a connection to a particular place based on historical and cultural events, geography calls to the imagination. As the world shifts to a focus on the virtual, how has this impacted artists’ work? Has it resulted in a weakening of a sense of place, or has the meaning of place simply adjusted to this new reality? This exhibit invites artists to explore this issue from either or both sides, and to celebrate what place means to them. What informs your work? A physical location or a virtual world?
