CORN

I have such reservations about corn but none about corn pudding.  We had it for dinner tonight.  I always think of corn as hailing from Iowa.  (I am clearly like a marketing sponge.)  But as I spent hours on the back roads of Ohio last year trying to avoid the nightmare that is I-75 South, I drove through miles and miles and miles of corn fields, intersected only by the occasional two-lane or gravel road.  Dazzling. Beautiful. Waving both “hello” & “goodbye”.  A landscape of corn.  In Ohio.  This next Call wants your landscape or seascape, or even your corn.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Art-Competition.net for Land & Seascapes. $20 Entry & great marketing awards.  Interpretation of the theme is liberal…

CLEAN PLATE?

I am not a fan of buffet restaurants. Even when I get past the being herded like school children through a cafeteria line, I have trouble with all inclusive nature.  How can one hold everything at a single temp & humidity and expect everything to thrive? Some foods are fragile. Celery & carrots require higher humidity. Dairy needs a lower temp than washed greens.  In exchange for larger variety, we end up with mediocre versions of fresh food that would have better maintained their individuality in a kitchen.  This next call is a hand-picked selection of the highest quality, not a buffet.  Interested? Me too.

SAUCY

I like to think I eat fairly clean.  But by coincidence, I ran out of all of my standard sauces at one time which necessitated my seeing them ALL in my shopping cart at once.  Who new? Soy, fish, oyster, Worcestershire, Thai chili, plum, four vinegars, 3 mustards, and lets not forget sriracha. In my defense, there ARE a few of scratch-made ones like barbecue & chocolate sauce.  It seems my portfolio of foods aren’t all as pure as I’d like to believe.  This next Call want your purely individual portfolio.  Take a look…

SUNCHOKE

Winter vegetables are a problem.  I am allergic to parsnips, tired of ever-present potatoes, refuse to pay $6 for a head of cauliflower, and am the only person left on the planet not addicted to kale.  This leaves the cabbage family, spinach –and Jerusalem artichokes.  I can’t remember the last time I ate time had this lovely tuber.  One of the best things about root vegetables is they are rarely bought excessively under-ripe, and since most folks roast or mash them, they are rarely too ripe.  That makes them easy to buy and uncommonly wasted.  Where are my keys? Many of you ask if I take the food photos used in AAAD posts.  Occasionally.  I took this one (left).  But more often, the imagery is stock.  I really don’t document what I eat often enough to provide a library of images from which to choose.  I have tried to break myself of the habit of being “that” diner –the one whose food gets cold while they get the perfect angle– out of guilt that my family was suffering the consequences (cold, soggy food).  This next Call wants YOUR documentary images, food optional of course.  Investigate…

Fresh fruit is still my favorite dessert.  I will take a bowl of berries over chocolate 9 times out of 10.  The only thing I miss is the fat content, the luscious mouth feel.  But, my husband has solved that problem with scratch-made whipped cream, heavy on the vanilla, light on the sugar.  There’s no going back. I talk to myself in the grocery store –okay everywhere.  But, it is worst in the grocery store.  In the produce section last week, I was standing in front of a mountain of shiny red apples when I muttered, “I don’t get it.”  As you know, I advertise my disinterest in the grainy texture & overly sweet flavor of many red varieties of apples on a regular basis.  I tend to prefer them green & tart; sue me.  My grocer had approx. 2 dozen green apples & 20 dozen red varieties for sale, hence the “I don’t get it.”  But this time, a woman in my age range was standing next to me while I muttered.  She turned, looked me in the eye & said, “If you don’t like apples, you’re not American.”  Really?  Is my nationality now determined by my fruit choices?  Lady, step away from the apples & toward the hard cider.  This next Call is all about being American.  Take a look…

Chalk menu boards are sort of a bummer.  I can appreciate the eco-friendly nature of the notion as well as the flexibility for casual restaurants to keep their menus updated and filled with fresh ingredients.  But I sure miss the illustrated paper menus.  Aside from the handful of chalk art geniuses out there, nothing really beats bad menu illustration.  Come on, you know you just had a flash back to your favorite childhood pizza joint’s drawing of the mustachioed chef complete with red neckerchief and checkerboard pants.  I suspect those illustrators aren’t going to be competing in this next Call.  Take a look…
