CALL for ENTRIES: Root to Bloom

Learn more about the Root to Bloom exhibit at the Principle Gallery!SIPPING and driving

While traveling around the country, people often ask what food I miss most from home.  The truth is, what I really miss is tea — unsweetened, cold-but-not-iced, sans caffeine.  I drink at least a gallon a day.  I can make it on the road, but it isn’t the same.  Different water, different container, different refrigerator.  When I am nearly home from a road trip, I always think the same thing, “I can’t wait to get home & have a glass of tea” (and see my family and dog, yeah, yeah, I know).  This next call wants to know what “home” is to you.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Altered State

Learn more about the Altered States of Collage exhibit from the Collage Artists of America!INGREDIENTS a-go-go

It is casserole week at my house.  Every once in a while we spend a day assembling casseroles.  I don’t know why people consider them “easy” meals because they take excessive amounts of time, prep and organization, but I do find them convenient to have around once they are pre-prepared on a week I need free time at the end of the day.  Plus, when we have a bevy of rapidly ripening food from our local farmers market, casseroles offer an excellent long-term storage option via the freezer.  But the best part of making casseroles are the ingredients.  Like many of you, I am guilty of getting into a rut of one protein and two vegetable for meals; however, casseroles are a collage of sometimes a dozen or more ingredients.  The combination of ingredients makes for a special treat –like this next collage call.  Don’t miss this one…

CALL for ENTRIES: Bring us Your Dead

Learn more about the Bring us your Dead exhibit from Las Laguna Gallery!shared TREATS

My Aunt Maggie B. loved marzipan. We would attempt to craft our own from honey, powdered sugar and finely ground almonds & foregoing the additional almond extract.  The year I spent with her trying to form our Play-Doh-like lumps into little fruit and vegetable shapes taught me that food color can be derived from real food, not just a jar, that gold and silver are edible in small amounts, and that treats well-labored taste better.  I celebrate the making & eating of every marzipan fruit with my great aunt Mag (RIP, 1922-2005).  This Call is a chance for you to celebrate life with someone who has already passed.  Take a look…

Food matters to me, inspires me.  I believe that what we eat informs our health & happiness.  I’m not talking about counting calories or carbs.  I am concerned with whole foods, grown locally with minimal processing.  Real food.  I am always delighted to see food inspiring others.  Chocolate has inspired art, including a sort of painting, in the the pastry arts for years, but did you know there are chocolate portrait painters?  No joke.  This next call is looking for work done through a painterly process, but I’m guessing they aren’t expecting chocolate.  Investigate for yourself…

CALL for ENTRIES: Nature

Learn more about the Nature Exhibit from art-competition.net!freckled FRUITAGE

Food imagery IS the visual brand of this site.  For years, I used primarily pristine images of perfect foods on crisp, white, burned out backgrounds. But in the past couple of years, my strategy has changed. I have concerns about how many people, children specifically, don’t know what natural produce looks like.  I’ve had many cashiers at the grocer offer to let me trade in a piece of organic fruit for something waxed, dyed & shiny for fear I was buying “bad” produce. Nature doesn’t care about symmetry, saturation or uniformity.  This next Call wants your take on nature.  Open to broad interpretation…

CALL for ENTRIES: Red 2

Learn more about the Red 2 Exhibit from art-competition.net!another shot of RED

Lamenting the end of red foods the other day, I completely forgot about rhubarb.  The further South you live, the later in the season you can harvest rhubarb.  It isn’t a common find at fresh markets in my area, or even at my grocer, in theory because it is a pain.  It is disease resistant and hard to kill, but it requires a well-fed diet of compost and/or manure each year and SO MUCH watering.  Nonetheless, I love rhubarb jam.  Rhubarb, sugar, lemon juice.  Simple, sweet & tart.  Try it; you’ll love it.  This next Call is looking for your red work, fruits & veggies are optional.  Delicious…

Although I prefer living in the mountains, I truly love coastal food –fresh fish, citrus squeezes & sticky sweet frozen treats.  But you know what really makes me think of the beach?  Muffulettas.  They are the perfect “sea-food”, like an antipasto sandwich with olives and peppers, meats and cheeses all marinated and compressed in a hollowed out crusty loaf or round.  An entire meal in a handful that doesn’t get stale or mushy.  This next Call wants to know about your sea experience.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Bareback

Parsnips make me itchy.  My family eats copious amount of root vegetables –carrots and turnips and beets.  But the carrot’s paler cousin makes me feel like I have rolled in fiberglass insulation.  Parsnips are easy to cultivate & fetch a higher price than carrots at local farmers markets.  I have a friend that grows them because she never has any waste.  They last forever, but even if they start to get overripe, they are a favorite treat of her retired work horse.   This next Call is interested in your equine imagery, and they promise not to make you eat parsnips.  This is a lovely theme…

“Humankind owes an enormous amount of gratitude to the horse. Domestication of the horse provided humans with mobility, survival and pleasure. Yet today, horses are facing a daunting challenge. Yearly round ups by the Bureau of Land Management, kill buyers, horse racing breakdowns, and drought that forces some owners to abandon their animals, have left horse’s lives in peril. This dilemma is not going away. It is a problem that needs to be addressed through action.” –from studiocgalleryla.com
