A CROCK FOR EVERY POT

I am the queen of the crock pot. I have Lemon Chicken in the crock pot as I write this post. I love Fall and Winter because they provide the perfect excuse to through lots of things in the crock pot and call is soup or chowder or stew. And in my kitchen next to the crock pot (when it is stored on top of my cabinets) is two of my favorite pieces of found-object assemblage–toasters covered in journal pages and a virtual crock pot of other brick-a-brack.

Here’s your chance to cook up a masterpiece of your own. This Call for Entries from The Renaissance Center in Dickson, TN is for a show called Spare Parts. It doesn’t have to be kitchen-themed, but it does have to be found objects or assemblage. Check it out!

The Renaissance Center in Dickson, TN has issued a call for assemblages and found-object artwork. Work can be three-dimensional and free-standing or two-dimensional and designed to hang on the wall.

The Renaissance Center’s Visual Arts department is committed to artistic performance, aesthetic appreciation and cultural understanding. They provide an educational resource for their community through course selections, gallery exhibitions and artist workshops.

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee.

ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible, artists must be over 16 years of age. Submissions must be original work by the artist, and must be created within the past two (2) years. Accepted work must be ready for display (2-D works must be wired for hanging). If your work requires any special accommodations please detail this information on your Entry Form.

NOTIFICATION:
November 24, 2010

SHIPPING: Please note that delivery or shipping of accepted artwork to and from the exhibition is the responsibility of the artist. The Renaissance Center has the right to refuse to display any work felt unsuitable for a family-friendly environment or misrepresented in the application.

COMMISSION: A 25% commission is taken out of all art sale transactions conducted through the Renaissance Center. Images of accepted work will be used for marketing and documentation, giving credit to the artist.

ENTRY FEE: There seems to be no entry fee.

RULES: Artwork is preferred if submitted in a vector format (Adobe Illustrator or EPS). You may also submit other graphic format files, such as JPG or GIF. All artwork must be the original creation of the submitting person. Do not violate copyrights in your design. Adult, obscene, offensive, or otherwise indecent artwork is strictly forbidden. Submission of your artwork acknowledges that your design could be used on a physical product sold by SolSketch and that you accept the standard artist royalty agreement.

SUBMISSIONS: SolSketch recommends that you use their pre-designed Adobe Illustrator templates. But, you do not have to use them. If you do not use their templates, they’ll do their best job to fit your artwork or photography to their templates for you.

My non-art related work place is The Lodge at Buckberry Creek, a resort in the Great Smoky Mountains patterned after the Great Camps of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. So for me, the idea of the Adirondacks conjures images of hand-oiled leather couches, animal hide rugs, wood-burning fires and warm mulled cider. Thanks to this next call, it can now remind me of phenomenal art opportunities as well!

When I say “Kentucky,” what immediately comes to mind? You may be surprised to hear that I don’t immediately think KFC, ha. No, I always think Kentucky Derby, big hats and mint juleps. It is interesting how some events can become tied to an entire state’s image. I love the Derby, but Kentucky has lots to offer including an excellent National Juried Art Show.

2011 Kentucky National

The fifth juried biennial, Kentucky National, is a survey of contemporary art in America hosted by The Clara M. Eagle Gallery at Murray State University, Murray, Kentucky. This year, they are honored to announce Matthew Strauss, Founder and Director of White Flag Projects, St. Louis, Missouri as Juror of Kentucky National 2011.

DEADLINE: November 1, 2010

SUBMISSION FORMAT: All submissions to Kentucky National 2011 must be digital. Digital files should be formatted at 72 dpi, and not exceed 10 inches in any direction. All Film and Video submissions should be submitted through an online link to a high-quality version of your film (through Vimeo, YouTube, or your personal artist website).

SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS: Current CV, Artist Statement, Thumbnail Sheet with complete label information (Name, Title, Media, Dimensions, Date), and a SASE.

SHIPPING: All costs associated with shipping work to and from the gallery are the responsibility of the artist.

Artworks that do not include the cost of the return shipping will become property of the Clara M. Eagle Gallery.

CATALOGUE: An exhibition catalogue featuring the artists of all accepted works will be produced and distributed as part of Kentucky National 2011. Artists featured in Kentucky National 2011 will received a copy of the exhibition catalogue for your professional archive.

ENTRY FEE: Non-refundable $30 fee for every 5 entries; $6 for each additional entry.

JUROR: Matthew Strauss is an artist, curator, and the founder and director of White Flag Projects, a not-for-profit alternative art space in St. Louis, Missouri. Strauss’ most recent solo exhibition was Dead Language at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis in 2006.

Strauss has organized more than 30 solo and group exhibitions in the past 5 years. Strauss’s writing and interviews have appeared in publications from The Smart Museum at The University of Chicago, Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, among others. (continues below)

MONEY FOR DESSERT

Most professional artists rely on art sales for income. Most emerging artists hope for art sales for extra income for supplies. Many prestigious art shows come with publicity and great printed materials, but lots of artists never get to go to out-of-town openings due to financial constraints. So, how do you afford to produce work, submit work, get to attend the openings and still afford to eat dessert?

Maybe this Call for Submissions from The Soap Factory could be the answer to your art entry problems. The Soap factory is looking for work for group exhibits, AND they offer installation support, travel, accommodations, and a stipend to those selected to exhibit.

CALL for SUBMISSIONS: The Soap Factory

The Soap Factory exhibits work in its galleries throughout the year. Exhibitions curated from submissions are typically comprised of 8-10 artists. The Soap Factory is a 120-year old ex-industrial warehouse on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

They have no climate control, air conditioning or permanent heating system; please bear this in mind when submitting your work. Projects by individual artists that propose to use the entire 12,000 sq feet of gallery space are always encouraged.

They are particularly interested in proposals conceived specifically for The Soap Factory galleries. (So do your homework!) Their programming is unique in that they select only a small proportion of the artists they exhibit from their pool of submissions. They commonly receive 400 artist submissions per season.

DEADLINE: November 30, 2010. They do NOT accept e-mailed submissions so this is a POSTMARK deadline.

REVIEW DATES: Submissions are reviewed for exhibition between May 1st and October 31st.

NOTIFICATION: March 2011

They may keep your submission on file for up to 8 months. Do not call or email to check on your submission. The Soap Factory does not return work. Please only send materials that you do not need to be returned.

COVER PAGE indicating the following information: Name, Email, Phone, Address, Medium of submission

IMAGES: Up to ten color images of your work on disc. Digital images must be Mac compatible (jPeg, tif, pdf) not less than 1500×2100 pixels. Each submitted image MUST ALSO BE PRINTED IN HARD COPY. Submissions that do not include hard copy images WILL NOT BE REVIEWED.

RESUME, artist statement and project description/ proposal.

Please submit any video on DVD. DVD must be in Zone 1 format (readable in USA).

Many of my readers are on the hunt for the holy grail…a show in NYC. And, while I have had NY shows, I am often excited by NYC shows because of the associated opportunity to eat food from street vendors. I can smell the various cooked meats wafting through the air as I work on this post. I trust all of you have more grounded, academic reasons for wanting to break into the NY arts scene. And this Call from Project Basho is looking celebrate new and contemporary photography.

CALL for ENTRIES: ONWARD

Project Basho is pleased to announce ONWARD ‘11, an annual juried photography competition exclusively featuring the work of emerging photographers. ONWARD focuses on new work that continues to push the medium. With ONWARD, photographers have the opportunity to present their vision and talent to a broad audience.

Through their partnerships with other photography organizations, photographers will have the chance to foster and grow a vibrant and rich photography community. There is no specific theme for ONWARD and submissions are open to any photographic medium from historical processes to new digital technologies.

MEDIA: ONWARD is open-themed, and any photographic medium, including but not limited to historical processes, traditional silver printing, chromogenic printing, and digital processes can be submitted for consideration.

ELIGIBILITY:ONWARD is open to individuals who have not had previous commercial gallery representation or a contractual agreement with any gallery.

JUROR: This year’s juror is Photogarpher Larry Fink. Fink’s career in photography is multifaceted and lengthy to say the least. He has been a photographer and educator of photography for over 40 years, and his work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Musee de la Lausanne Photographie in Belgium, and the Musee de l’Elysee in Switzerland. He has also been awarded two Guggenheim Fellowships in 1976 and 1979.

Fink’s work is the subject of numerous books including Social Graces, Runway, Somewhere There’s Music, Boxing, and Night at the Met. Under the early tutelage of Lisette Model, he developed a unique and offbeat style of empathetic reportage. With his distinct visual and political perspective, he has explored the underbelly of human interaction in all its glory and demise exemplified in his celebrated body of work, “Social Graces”.

DEADLINE: All entries must be submitted via online form by 11:59 PM EST on November 19, 2010. Entries sent by mail must be received no later than November 19, 2010.

NOTIFICATION will occur by e-mail by December 17, 2010.

FEES: The entry fee is $40 for up to three images, plus $10 for each additional image. A maximum of five images will be accepted. Submussion fees must be paid for with the online submission form at the time of submission. If paying by check (for those submitting slides), please contact Project Basho via e-mail first. Entrants from outside of the U.S. may only pay via Visa, Mastercard, American Express or PayPal. Friends of Project Basho will receive a $10 discount off the submission fee.

MEASURE ME

I don’t like to measure when I cook. Yep, I’m one of those folks that cooks with pinches and dashes. Never trust a recipe from me. The “ish” in all of my measurements should be implied. But for someone that doesn’t like to measure, I own 3 glass measuring cups, a set of stainless steel measuring cups and a great set of vintage measuring spoons. An enigma rolled in conundrum, eh?…sounds like sushi.

Check out this great call that will require that you measure. The Todd Gallery at MTSU has put out a Call for Entries for work in all media…so long as your it is no larger than 12″x12″x12″.

CALL for ENTRIES: 12×12

ELIGIBILITY: The 12×12 exhibition will be a juried and comprised of works that do not exceed 12˝ x 12˝ x 12˝ (this includes the frame for two- dimensional works, and in the case of three-dimensional works, includes the base). There are no media restrictions. Artists must be at least 18 years of age, and works must have been completed in the last two years. The exhibition is closed to students, staff, and faculty of Middle Tennessee State University. Works previously exhibited at MTSU are ineligible.

MEDIA: Open to all media that do not exceed 12”X12”X12”

DEADLINE: December 3, 2010

ENTRY FEE: $35 for up to three entries

NOTIFICATION: December 13, 2010

AWARDS: Presidents Award, $500, First Place, $350; Second Place, $250, Honorable Mention, $100

JUROR: Hamlett Dobbins is the curator of the Clough-Hanson Gallery on the campus of Rhodes College, Memphis TN. He is represented by David Lusk Gallery, Memphis, TN and Fourteen30, Portland, Oregon. Dobbins has been the recipient of a Tennessee Arts Commission Individual Artist Grant and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.

ENTRY PROCEDURE: Fill out application at: http://www.mtsu.edu/art/. A non-refundable fee of $35 must be paid via MTSU Marketplace at the time of submission.

Important – Your application is incomplete until you email your image(s) to Gallery@MTSU.edu. Images should be 300 dpi and no larger than 1 MB each.

ENTRY SPECIFICATIONS: Only 3 pieces/images may be submitted. Each digital image can be no more than 1 megabyte in size. Each image file must be labeled with name and entry number (ex. JaneSmith_1).

DOCUMENTATION: Photographs and videos will be taken to document the show for our archives, publicity, and an exhibition catalog.

Much of that email has spoken of inspiration–needing it, wanting and sometimes finding it. I find inspiration in food. How can you not be inspired by the perfect slice of pizza?

Through a Lens– Inspiration or Desperation

Great photography often brings with it strong emotional impact. This year’s theme, Through a Lens: Inspiration or Desperation is about evoking one of two strong emotional responses: Inspiration or Despair. Possible subjects could include people, places or things that inspire or cause feelings of despair.

ENTRY PROCEDURE: To enter, check the website. Entry information will be collected online. When you complete the entry information, you will be given the option to upload your images, or send the images on a CD or DVD.

Entry fees can be collected online using PayPal or a credit card. Checks and credit cards will also be accepted by mail.

All rights to the submitted images remain the property of the artist.

Submitting artists grant The Coastal Arts League the right to use entered work for the their website, printed lists of selected images, and for future show promotions.
