My mother loves to read. I grew up in a house full of books–including cook books. Maybe I’ll add one of my own cookbooks to her collection some day. One of my favorite cookbooks is The Vegetarian Epicure. The author, Anna Thomas once said, “We all eat, and it would be a sad waste of opportunity to eat badly.” That one statement changed my life and how I approach feeding both myself and my family. My Dad always loved to munch on raw potatoes when prepping them for some portion of a meal. No joking. Honestly, the only other being I know that loves raw potatoes is my dog Pepper. I am fat obsessed–not with the fat ON me but with the fat IN my food. In October of 2013, I threw away my weight scales. I’m done. My familial relationship with diabetes and my allergy to wheat has forced a reduction of many of the starchy treats I have always loved. But, beautiful, luscious fats like butter and coconut oil have increased to help ease the transition. I have given up my fruit with mean ban. That’s right–for years, I have had a problem with fruit and meat together. I tend to prefer fruits a little chilled, and I prefer meat at least room temperature, but preferably warm. As you might imagine juxtaposing the two only highlighted their differences. But, I’ve come around. As I have come to eating local (and organic, when possible) fruit, I am starting to prefer it room temperature. Juxtapose

The composition of
two or more elements
within a photograph,
emphasizing either the
similarity or dissemblance
between them.

One of the most effective ways to express ideas photographically is to compare and contrast subjects visually. Placing contrasting elements side-by-side adds interest to a photograph and holds the viewer’s attention. Opposites such as: large and small, light and shadow, happy and sad, smooth and rough, new and old, horizontal and vertical, still and motion. Each one of these examples draws the viewer in, makes them curious about the story, why is that person happy while the other one is sad? How did that cat managed to get in amongst all of those dogs? Why are these two seemingly unrelated objects set in the same frame?

Explore complex or simplistic incongruity, opposites and contradictions, layered imagery, and observe the addition and subtraction of context. Counterbalance can marry elements by placing them side-by-side, above or below each other, or layer them in the foreground, middle-ground and background just as slow shutter speeds can show the disparity of moving objects compared to static ones.

Explore the uniqueness
found in apposing
colors, textures, characters
& objects.

Juxtaposition plays a crucial role in creating expression in each of these areas and the photographs’ overall message and allure – so crucial that we feel it deserves an exhibit all it’s own.

JUROR: Kyohei Abe is Director and Chief Curator at the Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography in Detroit, Michigan. The Center offers exhibitions, both online and in its gallery space, as well as lectures, and workshops throughout the year. The mission is to promote contemporary fine art photography and provide a vital cultural resource to our visual community. Abe has been reviewing portfolios at national events including Filter Photo Festival, PhotoNOLA and Photolucida. He has been a juror for for Critical Mass since 2010. Abe is an artist whose works are part of the public collection of the Museum of Fine Art, Houston, TX, Detroit Institute of Art, Detroit, MI, The West Collection, Oak, PA as well as numerous private and corporate collections globally. He also has been an adjunct professor at College for Creative Studies in Detroit since 2005.

While inspired by a wide range of photography, Abe is most interested in seeing intelligent and coherent work displaying a fresh perspective.

My frugality DOES know boundaries. The one thing I don’t do is public foraging. It isn’t that I am necessarily opposed to eating wild things, like dandelion greens. Actually, I’m all for it, to be honest. But I am fearful of things unknown that might be sprayed ONTO the wild things. I live on the boundary (within a 1/2 mile) of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but since you cannot legally forage in any National Park, that doesn’t really help me find a safe place to forage. JUROR: Robin Rice’s mission is simple: to document the world around her in a cinematic way. Whether capturing the innate beauty of tucked-away South American landscapes or the reflective moments of unknowing subjects, her photographs are always candid. As a photographer, Robin has an earthy and bohemian way of portraying people and situations that is reflective of the way she lives life.

When she is not searching for inspiration from local people and places around the world, she runs The Robin Rice Gallery in New York City. As an artist who feels lucky to be able to parlay her love of the photographic medium into a career, she treats her gallery like a family rather than a business and is dedicated to supporting the work of established and local artists.

AWARDS: All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced and both winners will receive a free copy of the catalogue.

SALES: Kiernan Gallery no longer takes commission on sold works.

The Kiernan Gallery DOES still have incentive to sell your work. The gallery was founded by an emerging artist, and recognizes the importance of selling work; they believe that if artists are paying a submission fee, the gallery should not also take a portion of the sale. They do reserve the right to negotiate 20% in order to make a sale.
