CALL for ENTRIES:
Night Light

Night photography reveals a world that we do not consciously see and offers photographers unique creative opportunities.

Night and day, dark and light – one implies the absence of the other. But like yin yang, each has a bit of the other. The surprising thing to first time night photographers is how their images reveal things that the mind’s eye does not see. Different light sources reveal their true colors. Compared to daylight, directed and weaker light creates drama, contrast, mystery and mood.

The dynamic range of light at night tends to be more in line with our tools abilities. Of course there are technical challenges with shooting in low light, but also tremendous creative opportunities. That’s what Darkroom Gallery wants to show with this exhibit.

Do you work with existing light – or do you introduce your own? Maybe you paint with light emitting light brushes. How have you approached shooting at night to express your vision? They want to see.

ELIGIBILITY: Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If younger, you must have a legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR: Linda Rutenbergm, a Montreal-born native, who has been a photographer for 30 years. Her MFA in Photography is from Concordia University. She’s taught photography and worked as a freelance photographer for thirty years.

Rutenbergm’s fine art work has been exhibited internationally. She has produced several series:- Urban Visions, Sacred Sites, Terre Caliente, One Island – Many Cities, Mont Royal – A World Apart, The Spiritual Landscape and is presently working on a nocturnal garden series.

Linda has become particularly known for her striking images of flowers taken at night, revealed in a series of books, starting with The Garden at Night: Private Views of Public Edens (2007),After Midnight (2008)and The English Garden at Night (2009).

AWARDS: All selected entries are exhibited in the gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror’s Choice receives a 20×35″ vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People’s Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit.

SALES: Darkroom offers free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of their exhibitions, subject to standard sizes. I am a collector at heart. I enjoy having odd jars of condiments just a cabinet door away. I love having kitchen gadgets and utensils that I only have reason to use once a year. But what I most love to collect is art. I have art stuffed in every nook and cranny of my house. Including a little carving of late artist Bob Ross (click here for image) who came in his own little cigarette box marked “Bob in a Box” part of a series by Bob Snead , Founder of Redux. This next show gives YOU a chance to be both collected and a collector!

6x6x2012 is the fifth exhibition of thousands of original artworks, made and donated by celebrities, international and local artists, designers, college students, youths, and YOU. All artworks will be for sale to the public for $20 each to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo). Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery presents a Juried Competition, in which 2D artists from around the world are called upon to make online submissions for the theme Cityscapes for inclusion into the April 2012 online group exhibition.

3×3 Magazine is entering its ninth year judging the world’s best contemporary
illustration judged by some of the world’s top art directors, designers and illustrators.

Unlike many shows they have no boundaries, their entrants come from every part of the globe. They are still one of the best values around when it comes to entry fees and publication fees. And they continue to improve their entry process.

And unlike most show annuals that are on the bookshelves 3×3 Magazine’s annuals are prominently displayed on the newsstands in the US, Canada, the UK, Europe and parts of Asia where they are affordable to art directors and art buyers who may or may not be interested in illustration. There has been dramatic growth in the number of outlets stocking the 3×3 Magazine annual and the sales to art directors.

Gallery 31 of the Corcoran College of Art + Design is pleased to announce the call for submissions for its new show dedicated to art and technology to be displayed from August 6 – September 2, 2012. The exhibition is aiming to explore the phenomenon of innovative technologies in relation to contemporary art (or: the relation of contemporary art to new technologies). Nectar is a magazine that aims to explore a topic in depth through the inclusion of many different media, perspectives, and artists. What type of art goes into Nectar? Everything. They understand that different mediums allow for different types of expressions. So their issues aim to include photos, writing, drawings, paintings, film stills, illustrations, graphic design, fiber arts, book arts, mixed media, images of sculptures, installations, and performances, and everything else that we forgot that could fit on a page.

If you have work that you feel relates to the current theme,

The greatest challenge and most important element in a successful portrait is an intimate connection with the subject. The ways in which you explore this connection, going beneath the surface and finding what is the essence of the portrait determines its success as a representation of your subject.

Explore different styles and methods of making revealing portraits that reflect not just the subject but you the photographer as well. Demonstrate the sensitivity necessary to move beyond literal renderings to more intimate portraits. Create images that go below the surface and penetrate deeply into a subject’s character.

JUROR: Andrea Mellard is Curator of Exhibitions and Public Programs at AMOA-Arthouse in Austin, Texas. The newly merged museum provides rich environments for a wide range of audiences to investigate and experience excellence in modern and contemporary art. The museum accomplishes this through innovative exhibitions, education, interpretative programs and direct access to the creative process. Andrea Mellard draws on an interdisciplinary background to connect visual art to contemporary culture. She has been on staff for seven years and curating for since 2009.

Recently, she curated exhibitions of photography including Clifford Ross: Outside Realism and New Art in Austin: 15 to Watch. Previously, she was a curatorial and research assistant at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History for a three-year long cultural history project on Memphis, Tennessee. She holds an M.A. degree in American Studies from The University of Texas at Austin and an Interdisciplinary Humanities degree for California State University at Monterey.

AWARDS: First Place – $400, Second Place – $300, Third Place – $200 and Three Honorable Mentions. Prizes and Awards include a free Black & White Exhibition Book.

Sadly, most of the indulgent foods I love are not necessarily the most healthy. JUROR: Bradly Dever Treadaway is a multidisciplinary artist and educator specializing in digital media and installation. Utilizing a diverse set of photographic processes, video and performance, Treadaway’s work appropriates public and private archives to investigate the disintegration of family structure and the breakdown of cultural passage. Currently a Faculty Member and the Digital Media Coordinator at the International Center of Photography in New York City, Treadaway is a Fulbright Scholar to Italy and has exhibited work in 11 countries.

AWARDS: A $5,000 grand prize award will be presented to one photographer. The grand prize award winner will receive two nights hotel accommodations in Naples, Florida and round-trip economy class air fare to attend a preview reception and award presentation on Friday, June 1, 2012. SALES: Photographs exhibited in “Camera USA” may be available for purchase or listed as NFS (not for sale). Once stated, neither the price nor title of the photograph may be changed.
