Honestly, my chili taste better on day two, even day three.  Sometimes things don’t resonate on their debut, and this next Call might be the same for you.  I published this Call back in November, but with the new extended deadline rapidly approaching… take another look at this opportunity!

Check out this Call for Entries for the Charlatan Ink Art Prize. The entry fee is a whopping $50 per piece entered, but the judges are exemplary…and the Grand Prize is $25,000. And I think the second place prize is even better. Take a chance…

CALL for ENTRIES: Charlatan Ink Art Prize

The Charlatan Ink Art Prize for the Visual Arts will be held biennially in New York from 2011 onwards, but in an innovative twist will be traveling every other year around the globe. Possible venues for 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018 are in chronological order Brisbane/Australia; Graz/Austria; Cracow/Poland and Shanghai/China.

Art works submitted for the Charlatan Ink Art Prize must conform to each year’s specified theme. Artists may interpret the theme in any way that fits with their art practices, however the theme has to be visually present within all artistic interpretations.

THEME: ‘Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?’

MEDIA: Accepted: painters (in any medium & stylistic expression from classical painting to collages to illustrations to graffiti to drawing to print); photographers (film/digital); sculptors (3D works/jewellery); film-makers (video/film-camera/animation film); conceptual artists (working in all mediums mentioned above); and crafts (from pottery to weaving to carpet-looming).

ENTRY FEE: US$ 50.00 (including TAX) handling + administration fee has to be paid for each work entered. Two works can only be entered in each year’s competition. An individual work may not be submitted more than once. Should this occur, the Charlatan Ink Partners reserve the right to disqualify the entry.

Anthony Lister‘s “tireless approach to living is an unrelenting approach to art. What is evident in his work is the inability to remove a man’s life from his creations. Studio, gallery and museum shows aside, his name and imagery is on street corners worldwide accessing a massive audience by way of stickers, aerosol paint and all manner of markers. His paintings, drawings, sculptures and happenings pull from his experiences as a youth in Australia and participating in the repetition as a father of two. Superheroes, skateboarding, graffiti, Australian gangster celebrities, television, jail birds, tattoos, the internet, pop and advertising resurface in his art practice.” from Too Heavy For Superman by Joseph Allen Shea.

Judge Winston SmithWinston Smith: From 1977 to the present: has worked on numerous Punk record covers, posters, logos and flyers for American, British and Italian bands including Dead Kennedys, D.O.A., Green Day, Lard, and spoken word projects for Jello Biafra. Also designed album art for Ben Harper, Tijuana No, Alternative Tentacles projects, Emily the Strange, George Carlin and others. Books include three volumes of Collage Art published by Last Gasp of San Francisco, as well as works in countless other books as covers and inside (both as illustrations and for personal interviews), including illustrations for magazines such as The New Yorker, Playboy, Spin, The Progressive, Mother Jones, Amazing Stories, etc.

Marlene Antico has many years of experience in sourcing and collecting fine art for private and corporate collections. As a professional art consultant, she assists her clients to develop a comprehensive, high-quality collection and in the sale of their artwork on a consignment basis when required. Marlene Antico’s expert guidance ensures that both the experienced collector and the first time buyer derive satisfaction from their art purchases. She also works in tandem with architects and interior designers with sourcing work for their clients.

Judge JB BerkowJB Berkow: “I have been exhibiting and selling my work for more than forty years. In 1976 at age 27 I founded the most well-known cooperative gallery in the country, “Touchstone Gallery,” located in Washington, D.C. My work is in the permanent collection of the Vatican Contemporary Art Collection…not bad for a nice Jewish girl!

It has never been enough for me to show and sell my own work, for whatever reason I have always been interested in promoting other artists’ work. That is the reason that I went on to found “Frenchman’s Art Gallery and Studios, Inc.” in 1994 and opened “RosettaStone Fine Art Gallery” and “RosettaStone Corporate Art Consulting.”

Ed McCormack, a former columnist and feature writer for Rolling Stone, and one of the original contributing editors of Andy Warhol’s Interview, has written extensively on art and popular culture for the Village Voice and numerous other publications. Presently, with his wife Jeannie McCormack, he co-publishes the New York art journal Gallery & Studio. McCormack’s most pressing present project is a memoir called Hoodlum Heart,” of which he says, “It’s all about what it was like to be the test dummy for the crash and burn generation, an epic work of shameless name-dropping and self-libel that is bound to create a scandal.”

Judge Bing DaweBing Dawe: Since graduating from the University of Canterbury School of fine Arts in the mid 1970s Bing Dawe has exhibited extensively throughout New Zealand and overseas. He has held over 40 solo exhibitions including a major survey exhibition at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery in his home town of Christchurch in 1999. His work is held in most public and private collections in New Zealand. In 1999 he was the winner of a major national art award, The Visa Gold James Wallace Award.

The Winner of the inaugural Charlatan Ink Art Prize for the Visual Arts 2011 shall receive the Charlatan Ink Art Prize Silver Ink Well and US$ 25,000.00 in Prize Money.

The artist with the second highest point score awarded by the jury shall receive the Charlatan Ink Encouragement Prize, which includes a 6 week artist residency at the Carlton Arms Hotel, New York*, a Canon G11 Camera and US$ 1,000.00.

Furthermore Endeavor Printing will print an exhibition catalog (softcover, max. 75 pages in an edition of 200) for an exhibition the artist might undertake within the next twelve months of the Second Prize win.

The artist with the third highest point score awarded by the jury shall receive a twelve months art expose on the CHARLATAN INK Website, hosting the artist’s portfolio.

To encourage galleries to forward to their artists all relevant information concerning the Charlatan Ink Art Prize, Charlatan Ink Publishing & Endeavor Printing have committed themselves to print for the gallery that has encouraged the Winner to participate in the Charlatan Ink Art Prize, a first class exhibition catalog in an edition of 300 copies (softcover, max. 100 pages).

SALTY BUT SWEET

I grew up with a single father from age 3 to 13, and it was a culinary adventure.  One of my fondest memories is of weekend-long motorcycle trips when I was around 8.  We’d climb on and hit the road.  I would freeze in the morning early-morning air.  My father’s solution?  We’d stop at every other golden arches we could find for french fries and hot fudge sundaes.  This next Call is a whole different way to celebrate two-wheeled freedom.

Nature Abstract by Juror Susan LehmanJURORS:  Susan Lehman, Oregon artist and art educator, began life-long passion for motorcycles that began with her first ride on the back of a restored 1951 Vincent Black Shadow. Fans of British café-style racers, she and her husband have owned and ridden dozens of motorcycles. Susan’s formal art training was at California College of Arts in Oakland, CA. She has co-produced two juried art exhibitions for the museum.

Philip Koenen, Since an early age, Philip has had two passions; motorsports and film making. Among the founding students of the now famous Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University, Philip was asked to join the Eisaman, Johns & Laws advertising agency to work on the U.S. Suzuki motorcycle account and later to be the Executive Producer for their Film and Television Department. In 1983, he joined the Stunt Driving Team, Driver’s Inc. the clientele of which included Ferrari, Jaguar, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. In 1984 he left advertising to follow his passion for building and restoring automobiles. Today Philip continues to successfully operate Grand Touring Garage with a worldwide clientele.

Artwork by Christiaan Dutch MostertChristiaan “Dutch” Mostert, is an internationally recognized watercolor artist. Born in Holland he received early training from his artist father. A full-time freelance artist since 1978, his travels through Europe, Africa the Middle East and the Pacific Rim countries have provided him with a wealth of subject matter for his works. Though known for marine subjects Dutch has also developed a love of classic vehicles.

Mike Boyle, is an avid collector of vintage Motorcycles. He began restoring cars and motorcycles in 1964. For 32 years he owned and operated a large repair and restoration business in San Diego. Since his move to Coos Bay in 2006 he does restoration work only on his own collections of cars and motorcycles.

Artwork by Juror Mike HolmMichael Holm, works primarily in digitally manipulated photography, printmaking and design. He has had a life-long interest in motorcycles. Mike received a BA in Art and photography from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has been instrumental in the upcoming exhibition of motorcycles and motorcycle art.

AWARDS:  First Place Award will receive cash prize of $500, Second Place Award will receive cash prize of $350, Third Place Award will receive cash prize of $250 and Four Honorable Mention ribbons will also be awarded.

SALES:  Works in the exhibition may be available for sale. Artist agrees to donate 30% of any sale as commission to Coos Art Museum.

My family is on a savings spree.  We sat down the first week of the year and decided on goals for the year.  Many of those goals require cash.  Cash necessitates saving.  Saving, in my house, means cutting the food budget.  Grocery shopping is now preceeded by a menu and detailed grocery list and eating out has been cut to one sit-down meal and one fast-food meal a week.  This next Call gives you an opportunity to plan ahead.

This Call for Entries is for the 13 Sugarloaf Fine Art & Crafts festivals.  I don’t publish many festival calls, but Sugarloaf is among the country’s finest.  Take a look, and find a festival for you…or enter them all.

Sugarloaf Crafts Festival, one of the nation’s most popular and most recognized juried shows of contemporary crafts and fine art, is now accepting applications from artists for its 2011 shows.

MEDIA:  Artists may apply for the 2011 shows in categories including ceramics and pottery, fiber and fashion, fine art, furniture, blown and leaded glass, leather, metalsmithing, photography and functional and decorative wood crafts.  Sugarloaf is no longer accepting applications for jewelry artists for Spring 2011 shows. Jewelry remains open for Fall 2011.

This past fall, attendance at the seven Sugarloaf shows increased by12%, and artists’ sales increased over 8%, totaling $9.7 million. Artists whose work is exhibited at Sugarloaf shows are jury-selected and are represented in the nation’s finest galleries, private collections, and museums.

is Director of Exhibitions at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut; Since 1995 she has been responsible for the design of the 12-14 exhibitions per year of the Museum; Having worked at the Bruce Museum since 1980, her responsibilities included art, history, anthropology, and science.  She received her BFA from Blocherer School of Fine Art and Applied Sciences, in Munich, Germany with a Major in painting and a Minor in Interior Design.  Anne initiated and has carried out, for many years, the Outdoor Art Show of the Bruce Museum.  After settling in the United States, in 1977, she studied printmaking and has since worked primarily as a printmaker.

Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition

Look Homeward Angles by Robert WinklerThe Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition is a national juried competition presented annually by the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.

Made possible by the generosity of longtime arts supporters Martin & Doris Rosen, this national, juried competition continues a long-held tradition of showcasing the best of large-scale, contemporary American sculpture. Each year, 10 sculptures are selected and are situated in outdoor, public settings across campus. A cash prize is awarded to the artist whose work is chosen as that year’s Rosen Award winner.

Since its establishment in 1987, The Rosen has become an integral part of An Appalachian Summer Festival, the university’s annual multi-arts celebration, with the announcement of the Rosen Award winner coming during the festival’s annual Sculpture Walk with that year’s juror.

Fresh Air Freshener by Lee MillardELIGIBILITY:  The 25th Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition  is open to artists currently residing in the US and at least 18 years of age. Artists exhibited in previous Rosen Competitions are not eligible to enter for three years. Previous recipients of the Martin and Doris Rosen Award are not eligible to enter for five years.

Fuel for Fire by Jim BuonaccorsiAWARDS:  Ten finalists will be selected for installation on the Appalachian State University’s (ASU) campus. All finalists, whose works are installed on campus, will receive a $1,000 honorarium. The Rosen Sculpture Competition will provide installation equipment and will cover the cost of installation and lodging during installation and de-installation.

One artist will be named as the Martin & Doris Rosen Award Winner and will receive a cash prize of $5,000 plus a weeklong residency with additional stipend, within ASU’s Department of Art during the 2011-2012 academic year.  Awards and Honoraria total $16,500.

In addition, the Rosen Sculpture Competition is a featured exhibition offering a printed catalog, audio tour powered by Guide By Cell, sales program, optional insurance coverage & archives on the competition’s website.

The holy grail for most of the emerging artists I know is a solo show in New York City.  The myth of the NYC show as the tipping point for wealth, success and fame is as idealized as NYC diners, bagels and street hot dog vendors. 

Don’t misunderstand, I LOVE diners, bagels and hot dogs.  I recognize that none of them will change my life, but I will enjoy one and all if you offer me one.

MEDIA:  Eligible works include oils, acrylics, watercolors, mixed media, pastels, drawings, prints and sculpture in any medium. No photography, video, film, or installations. No mechanically reproduced artwork (computer, printer, giclees, etc.).

ENTRY FEE:   The fee is $35 for 1 – 3 works. $5 for each additional work up to 10 works total. Entry fees are non-refundable.

Regatta by Juror Paul ResikaJUROR:  Paul Resika is a highly-respected American painter. Using bold colors and recurring motifs inspired by nature and the world around him, his work merges the representational with the abstract.

At 19, he began studying with Hans Hoffman.

Represented by Lori Bookstein Fine Art in NYC, he has exhibited extensively in galleries and museums around the world including galleries in Madrid, Rome, London and Venice and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, The National Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Academy of Design, where he is an Academician. 

Resika’s numerous awards and honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship.

JURORS:  John Lopez, Metal Sculpture Artist.  Sculptor John Lopez was born and raised in Western SD.  His western & rodeo theme bronzes have been well received & have sold all over the country from CA to NY.  For the past 10 years, John has been working on The City of Presidents project in Rapid City SD, creating bronze sculptures of the presidents. In the midst of a successful career in bronze sculpting, Lopez discovered scrap iron sculpting. See Blonde pictured above right.

James Van Nuys, a realist painter & sculptor, is one of the finest interpreters of the SD landscape.  Van Nuys was born in Whittier, CA and has lived intermittently in Rapid City,SD most of his life. He attended Wilmington College, graduating with a double major in art & music. Shawn Wilson, owner of the new Shaviq Gallery, designs beautifully unique jewelry consisting of natural stone, repurposed wire, bright colors of glass, broken jewelry, old buttons, dead watches, even tea bag tags.

Have you ever wondered why most women fill the family role of cook?  (although not in my house)  …But in the professional world most Chefs are men?  Me too.  I like being female, despite the issues…even in the South.  Today I’m paying tribute to one of my favorite female Chefs, Cat Cora, who proves gender doesn’t matter…at least in this case.  But we all know that gender does matter, especially in this next call for entries.

Ever since Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro organized the collective Womanhouse project in San Francisco in 1972, as well as Judy Chicago’s 1979 Dinner Party, shows centering on women’s reality have become a staple in galleries nationwide.

Download the Prospectus for Gender Matters/Matters of Gender!Gender Matters/Matters of Gender, expands this tradition to include works by artists of both sexes who work from a consciousness of how gender is reflected in art, how the artist’s gender influences her or his medium, and how gender often affects the circumstances in which the artist creates. This show will include a range of artists who make art which explores sexual identity, evolutions in biological reproduction and art which is sometimes informed by an awareness of gender based craft and traditions.

ELIGIBILITY: The exhibition is open to everyone. Entries must represent original works of art or design and represent or address the theme in some way.

I am the queen of the crock pot.  I have Lemon Chicken in the crock pot as I write this post. I love Fall and Winter because they provide the perfect excuse to through lots of things in the crock pot and call is soup or chowder or stew.  And in my kitchen next to the crock pot (when it is stored on top of my cabinets) is two of my favorite pieces of found-object assemblage–toasters covered in journal pages and a virtual crock pot of other brick-a-brack. 

Here’s your chance to cook up a masterpiece of your own.  This Call for Entries from The Renaissance Center in Dickson, TN is for a show called Spare Parts.  It doesn’t have to be kitchen-themed, but it does have to be found objects or assemblage.  Check it out!

SHIPPING: Please note that delivery or shipping of accepted artwork to and from the exhibition is the responsibility of the artist. The Renaissance Center has the right to refuse to display any work felt unsuitable for a family-friendly environment or misrepresented in the application.

COMMISSION: A 25% commission is taken out of all art sale transactions conducted through the Renaissance Center. Images of accepted work will be used for marketing and documentation, giving credit to the artist.
