2014 Collectors’ Choice

ELIGIBILITY:
Open to all artists 18+

MEDIA: Paintings, mixed media, works on paper, photography, sculpture, installation, digital, video and performance.

DEADLINE: March 1, 2014

ENTRY FEE: $35 (USD) for 3 images, $5 each additional image, maximum 10.

JURORS: Each art collector may select one or more pieces by artists that are not currently represented in their private collection. Collectors’ names will be kept anonymous until the opening reception. Editor’s Note: My assumption is these are collectors that purchase work in the Sylvia White Gallery. Because they are anonymous, the best recommendation I have for research is to spend some time investigate the artists the gallery represents, since in theory, it is their work these collectors are purchasing–at least in part.

AWARDS: Selected artists will participate in 2014 Collector’s Choice exhibit April 23rd to May 24th, 2014 at Sylvia White Gallery.

SALES: Unless otherwise specified, accepted works will be considered for sale at the price indicated and 40% commission will be retained by The Sylvia White Gallery.

Barsky Gallery will be showcasing “Art’s Salute to Football”, an exhibit solely dedicated to football sculptures: Full-size footballs re-imagined by established and emerging artists. The exhibit is set to debut on Saturday, Jan 25th and run through Saturday, Feb 8th.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All media that can be applied to a full-size football creating a football sculpture.

DEADLINE: Complete works must be received in the gallery no later than Monday, January 20th. Editor’s Note: Don’t shoot the messenger. I promise I just received the Call. BTW, this is a great way to wile away the hours trapped inside during these sub-zero temperatures that many of us are enduring.

ENTRY FEE: None, but you do have to buy a full-size football. Another note: You DON’T have to buy the football from the gallery–although they do have them available.

AWARDS: A panel of judges will select 3 pieces based on criteria such as artistic merit, workmanship, originality and creativity to be exhibited in the Barsky Gallery Booth at the Spring Affordable Art Fair in NYC.

Isn’t it funny how certain seasons suddenly bring about the craving for very specific foods? It never occurs to most people to even think about fruitcake until we start seeing winter holiday decorations appear. My German in-laws (3rd generation via Wisconsin) save kuchen for Christmas. Kuchen is German & approximately translates to “cake,” but I know it as a sort of custard & jam filled sweet-dough, low-rise cake that screams Christmas. JUROR: John Rychtarik, a South Dakota native, received his B.S. in Art Education from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD; and attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD. John then spent several years teaching art throughout South Dakota to students of all ages in public schools, South Dakota Arts Council programs, and Native American schools.

Rychtarik later transitioned into the museum field, where he worked for 35 years at the Robinson State Museum, the Siouxland Heritage Museums and the South Dakota Art Museum. During his 11.5 years as the Exhibitions Coordinator at the South Dakota Art Museum, he booked, organized, curated, and installed almost 150 exhibitions. John is also an artist himself. His work has been exhibited throughout South Dakota, including a solo exhibit at the Visual Arts Center of the Washington Pavilion.

AWARDS: $1,000 first place, $500 second place, $250 third place

CALL for ENTRIES:
Mystery Build 2014

Mystery Build is an art challenge developed by two artists to inspire creativity. The concept is simple. Buy a kit. Make something out of the contents of the kit. And, upload either a picture or video of your creation.

ELIGIBILITY: Contest is only open to legal residents of the U.S. and D.C. Contestants must be 18 years of age and older to receive cash prizes. Contestants under the age of 18 must have an adult who is 18 or older complete the Submission Form.

THEME: “Build a Dream” — You may interpret the contest’s theme any way you wish.

MEDIA: You must buy a Mystery Build Kit. You may choose to use anything in the Kit and the Mystery Build box itself, but you are not required to use all of the materials. Entrants MAY ADD paint, varnish, lacquer, food coloring, oil, water, dye, ink, and similar liquids to decorate or enhance the entry, or to manipulate the materials. Liquids may not be used for structural elements, but may only be used as a surface enhancement or as a tool. Substances which are not liquid at room temperature, such as wax, are excluded. Liquid adhesives not included in the Kit are also not permitted. Judges will have final ruling on use of liquids.

Entrants may use any tools available to them to alter the materials in the Mystery Build Kit, barring tools that add or leave behind an additional physical material, such as a stapler which leaves a metal staple, or a soldering operation which adds solder. You may make tools out of any materials you want. Tools may include molds, which also do not have to be made of materials from the Kit.

DEADLINE: Submissions are due by 10/20/14 at 12:59 p.m. ET.

ENTRY FEE: FOR a LIMITED TIME $49.95 for the kit (includes shipping, kit and contest entry fee) as of the writing of this post. Normally, the cost is $59.95.

JUDGING PROCESS: An independent, qualified panel of judges will judge all eligible entries received based on these criteria: Creativity and Use of Materials, Creative Use of the Theme, Execution/Craftsmanship, and Presentation.

Nat’l Juried Exhibition 2014

The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville announces a call for entries for its National Juried Exhibition of 2014. The Arts & Culture Alliance’s National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 fine art works encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the juror, Paul Collins, for exhibition in the main gallery.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years and older living in the US.

MEDIA: Entries must be original works completed within the last two years in the following categories: Painting (oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, digital, and mixed media), Graphic Arts (pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, conte, colored pencil, and printmaking), 3D (sculpture, ceramic, and fibers), and Photography.

DEADLINE: December 8, 2013

NOTIFICATION: Mailed January 6, 2014

ENTRY FEE: $40 for up to three works. Up to 3 additional entries may be submitted for $7/ea. Diptychs and triptychs are considered one work. Works are juried by digital images only. Each 2D work may be represented by one digital image, and each 3D work may be represented by up to three separate digital images: two full views and one detail view.

JUROR: Paul Collins is a multidisciplinary artist and curator from Nashville, TN. Paul makes drawings, paintings and sculpture that combine humor, tactility and observation to examine the world around us. Paul has an MFA from Yale and has been a resident at Skowhegan, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and the Vermont Studio Center.

Paul is an enthusiastic collaborator and has curated shows or organized artist projects for a wide range of artists. Paul lives in Nashville, TN & works as Gallery Director and Asst Professor of Art at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville.

AWARDS: At least $1,000 in cash awards as designated by the juror
