JUROR: Jennifer Rizzo is a Brooklyn based curator and the Director at Spoke NYC. Since 2011, Jennifer has been working in contemporary galleries in NYC with a passion for lowbrow and new contemporary art.

AWARDS: Artists selected by the guest juror will receive a 2-page spread including a brief bio, website, and 2 images in print and digital formats. Published artists will receive a complimentary digital issue and will be listed on Create! I shop from a half-dozen grocery stores. Because all but one is out of town, my menu is often reflected in my travels for the week. Thai food only shows up on the table when I make it 30 miles out to get natural peanut butter. I mean, the local grocer has something called “natural”, but I think we can agree that just because something CAN be eaten doesn’t mean it SHOULD be eaten –natural or not. THEME: Natural Encounters. “We now know that 60% of primate species are threatened with extinction, as are hundreds of other species. In the the Arctic, large areas of permafrost are melting, and an ice swath the size of Delaware is separating in Antarctica. These are signposts for a hopeless future for our planet, and it’s our responsibility as artists to call attention to, and alter, this course. Please submit images that address the connection and interdependence between humans and the natural world. The images may or may not be documentary. I’m looking for emotional impact as well as a strong composition. I encourage all photographic techniques, although the message is more paramount than the medium.” –Fran Forman

CURATOR: Fran Forman‘s photo paintings have been exhibited widely, both locally and internationally, and are in many private collections as well the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, The Grace Museum & the County Down Museum. Forman was selected to be Artist in Residence at Holsnoy Kloster, Norway, in 2016 and exhibited at the Sunnhordland Museum in Norway in 2017. Recently, Fran has mounted solo exhibitions as well as numerous group shows. She is represented by Pucker Gallery (Boston), After Image Gallery (Dallas), and Susan Spiritus Gallery (CA). She is a Resident Scholar at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis, a recipient of several grants and Artist Residencies, and teaches digital collage internationally.

AWARDS: The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. In addition, their image will be on the home page for a month. 2nd place & honorable mentions will have their image shown along with their bio, artist statement, C.V. and a link back to their website.

It snowed today, in March, in the South, after a couple of weeks of nearly L.A.-like weather. And, of course, I heard lots of grumbling about how produce prices were going to be sky high because of ruined crops. But, truth be told, most folks growing produce this time of year are growing in high tunnels that protect them from minor snow fall and light frost. And some fruit trees like apricots cold exposure amazingly well. This next Call offers exposure that is off benefit, not to be feared. Editor’s Note: I am well-aware of the hackneyed, trite promise of exposure as a payoff for exhibitions that only end up taking an artist’s time & resources offering nothing of real value in return. I don’t like them either. THIS is not one of THOSE as best I can tell. Unlike most billboard calls, there are NO production or participation costs outside of the entry fee. Musée is dedicated to exposing audiences to the most dynamic, unexpected, and cutting edge photography from both up-and-coming and established photographers, while working alongside the industry’s most prestigious artists, gallerists, curators, and collectors. Blanch’s work has been featured in individual and group shows, books, private collections, and has been published in The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, and Rolling Stone. She also teaches at the International Center for Photography and is a member of the APA.

AWARDS: Selected work will be displayed on billboards throughout Los Angeles. The show is promoted on the TBC website & social media channels. A map is created with artists’ information, website, location of board that can either be seen on an APP or downloaded from the website (past examples).

In 2016, she was a finalist for Critical Mass and was invited to Review Santa Fe. Her images have appeared in numerous exhibits at The Center for Fine Art Photography, Houston Center for Photography, Phoenix Art Museum, Photo Place Gallery, Vermont Center for Photography, and A. Smith Gallery. The artist’s work has been featured in Adore Noir, Shadow & Light, Square Magazine, BETA – Developments in Photography, Adobe Create, and Lenscratch.

I’ve had many a conversation about why some foods, eggs & bread & oysters for example, come in dozens. I’ve heard that it is easier to divide because it has more factors (1, 2, 3, 4 & 6). I’ve heard that a bakers dozen (13) exists merely so delivery men don’t eat part of the order making the baker look like a cheat. I’ve heard it originated in the fact that there were 12 pennies in a shilling which made sales without change making easier. None of these are verifiable though. Did you know there is even a Dozenal Society that advocates for 12 as our base number instead of 10? While you contemplate the math of it all, this next Call will only choose a half dozen artists to participate in this show. Are you one of six?

Every year my grocer discounts imported berries to make way for local produce and I cannot wait to eat every color of Spring– red, blue & green. What makes comfort food a comforting food? I have a friend whose local tradition is bring food to a grieving family. Upon the death of her cousin, she noted that a half-dozen dishes of macaroni and cheese, two layered dips and three lasagnas, none of them comforting to all. For me it is fried green tomatoes, and occasionally goat cheese. After a little research it seems that it isn’t the cheese or butter or starch that makes comfort food, it is familial connection, the security of childhood (if you had any). I am fairly certain my father never tasted goat cheese in his life, but my grandmother made the best fried green tomatoes ever. So, maybe. I don’t know. What do you think? She was a panelist for the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Photography fellowships, speaker for The Photo Brigade and juror for international exhibitions including ‘The Fence’ and PDN’s ‘The Curator Awards’. For her personal work, (though it’s all personal), recent exhibitions include The Griffin Museum of Photography, Boston, MA; Filter Photo Space, Chicago, IL; The Southern Contemporary Art Gallery in Charleston, SC; Camera Commons in Dover, NH; The Hess Gallery at Pine Manor College, MA; Plates to Pixels Online Gallery; and the Dorchester Art Project, MA.

Green onions are among the first shoots sent up in Spring. They taste like the more refined cousin of wild onions whose smell I associate with fresh-cut grass. The greens are only fresh for a few days, but the bulbs protect themselves by turning outer layers into a husk-like spring jacket. Gaining recognition throughout the area, her work has been shown in multiple group exhibitions across NC & in Richmond, VA. Suggs has been awarded several grants & honors, including the NC Fellowship Award, a city of Richmond CultureWorks Grant, and a residency at the Quirk Hotel & Gallery in Richmond, VA. Her work is part of several corporate collections, and she is currently a curator at LIGHT Art + Design.

AWARDS: Cash awards totaling $2,000 will be presented at the exhibit’s Opening Reception –Best in Show ($1000), 2nd Place ($500), 3rd Place ($250), 2 Merit awards ($125 ea.) & an award from Fast Frame.
