of food

I have drafted a dozen cookbooks in my head.  They are usually inspired by whatever food eccentricity I am dwelling on at the moment.  But they always have their roots in momentary excitement as opposed to being deep-rooted in a true philosophy about food.  Maybe if I ever find myself, a cookbook will make it out of the draft stage.  In the meantime, my roots will have to be of the vegetable variety.  This next Call want to explore YOUR feelings on roots, or the lack thereof…

Check out this Call for Entries from DRAFTspace (NY, NY) for Rootlessness, a two-part themed exhibit.  Selected artists will exhibit their solo exhibitions in the street-level pop-up space on Manhattan’s vibrant Lower East Side gallery district.  This is a great chance for that New York opening you’ve always wanted…

The exhibition series will consist of two sections – Works on Paper and Works on Space – and one exhibition proposal for each section will be chosen and realized on New York’s Lower East Side.

NY has historically been home to ethnically diverse immigrants, inspiring feelings and experiences related to migration, temporality, transformation, assimilation, or conflict.  DRAFTspace is hosting this exhibition series to provoke attention and discussion about this sense of rootlessness.  Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme creatively.

The theme of rootlessness is connected to the unique space setup and location. The exhibit will not be held in a permanent gallery space.  Instead, it will temporarily occupy a street-level vacant retail space that will be consecutively transformed to fit the different identity and characteristics of each exhibition.

Learn more about the Rootlessness Exhibits!

The Lower East Side where this event will take place has long been an immigrant neighborhood and has seen a series of immigrant communities pass through it.  The area has undergone gentrification, starting in the mid-2000s and has since become home to upscale boutiques and numerous contemporary art galleries.

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists

My kitchen is clean-ish.  Can you eat off my floors?  Absolutely not.  I am pretty good about cleaning as I cook so there isn’t a disaster to clean up afterward.  And, crumb-y counters are my pet peeve; so I keep them wiped down.  But despite my best efforts, I have an ant problem.  I find a dozen or so small black ants on my kitchen counters every time I go in.  I’m tempted to incorporate them into my next recipe just to send a message to the rest of their kind.  This next Call could be a reason to spare their little lives, or not…

Check out this Call for Entries from the 1650 Gallery (Los Angeles) for A Bug’s Life. The entry fee is only $25, and the 1650 Gallery also offer free matting and framing (if you stick to their pre-set sizes). Take a closer look…

Ah, the mysterious world of the insect.  Some are cute and cuddly, like the furry caterpillar.  Some are fierce and scary, wearing their skeletons on the outside to frighten us.  Some are artistic and majestic like the beautiful butterfly. And some are just downright romantic, like the firefly on a warm summer evening.

Nothing stretches the photographic imagination like a visit to a strange new world, but on this trip you needn’t go far to find a photo worthy subject; the wonderful world of bugs intersects and parallels our own.  Like humans, bugs are everywhere!  So this month, forget the cobwebs of your mind, grab your camera and your knee pads and worm your way into the nooks and crannies of the fantastic world of the creepers and the crawly!  Be here now and in tune with the buzz…. this month 1650 celebrates life — a bug’s life!

I think the teenagers that work at my local market think I am the crazy produce lady.  It might have something to do with the muttering under my breath when they drop the pineapple on my tomatoes or the fact that I will stand in a longer line to get the cashier that won’t drop a cantaloupe on my cilantro.   The muttering prevents me from coming unhinged.  The only thing missing from the scenerio is my muttering “whippersnappers,” but I assure you it will show up eventually. Eating in the car is dangerous.  Don’t get me wrong; I’ve done my share of car consumption.  The back floorboard of my car looks like a fast food trash can sometimes.  But on my way home yesterday, I watched a young woman t-bone a truck with her compact car while munching on a burger.  Her view seemed blocked by the wax paper wrapper.  I’m just saying, “Be careful out there.”   This next Call is another reason to keep your eyes on the street.  Great show…

Street photographers are guerrilla documentarians. They capture the world as they see it, using small and forgotten moments to present a larger narrative. Themes of class, age, occupation, or background are brought to life by small stories that evoke our shared humanity.

The keen eyes of street photographers see what others take for granted, and depict the richness and variety of our public lives. For Eye on the Street, The Kiernan Gallery seeks street photography in all its forms.

I have a lot of kitchen toys, but most of them are small, manually-operated hand gadgets.  Honestly, I’m not sure I could cook without a manual juice reamer or my mandolin.  I usually forego the big, shiny electric appliances, but I recently gave in to a beautiful tangerine colored Cuisinart ice cream maker.  It looks like a toy, but it produces masterpieces.  A little kefir milk, a few raspberries and a scrape of vanilla bean is all it takes.  This next Call wants to see the masterpiece you can create with a toy.  Be sure to read the media description completely…
