Comfort food coincides with wet weather in my house.  I can be dreaming of a Summer salad in the middle of June, and an afternoon thunderstorm can quickly turn my thoughts to potato soup, enchilada casseroles and baked apples.  Maybe a healthier way to channel my feelings about rain would be through this next Call.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Don’t Take Pictures (art publication) for Wet Weather. This is a gorgeous biannual print, online & tablet-ready magazine. Did I mention no entry fee?  AND they generously support AAAD as a sponsor. So, make us proud…

More and more people are farming.  There may be fewer commercial farms, but I find that more and more people are taking the time to grow something.  Not everything; just something.  This image (left) is from the Facebook feed of a friend of mine in the suburbs of Charleston, WV who is sprouting garlic for container gardening on his back patio.  He planted tomato seedlings in between the sprouted cloves.  It isn’t a huge endeavor, but he’ll have the best salsa of anyone in his neighborhood this summer.  LOVE.  This next Call celebrates roots in exactly the same manner.  Cultivate this one…

“Curious about histories, origins, and the beginning of things, we ask emerging artists to probe their genesis – the dawning of a tribe, the annals of ancestry, the birth of a movement.  Those catalytic moments in time that give rise to new ethos. We also invite artists working with organic and/or sustainable materials to apply. Our aim is to feature projects born out of a response to horticulture, urban farming, and agriculture; or narratives that invoke our natural world. ” –from onthegroundfloor.co

MEAT

I am not currently a vegetarian, but I think I could be without that much difficulty.  It is a personal choice that I have examined over the years.  As Jon & I head toward a more agrarian lifestyle, I recognize that I am unwilling to take the life of an animal living on my farm (chickens, rabbits & goats).  Instead, I leave that job to my husband who has less of a debate with it than I do.  Does that mean I should not be willing to eat them–since I couldn’t kill them?  This is my current philosophical internal dialogue.  These animals offer my family the best way to get protein, but the chickens & goats can produce protein in the form of eggs & milk without it resulting in their demise.  Should we choose NOT to kill them?  I know both sides of the argument.  Do I choose not to eat it if I cannot kill it?  The war of human versus nature rages in my mind as it does in this next Call from F-Stop.  Take a look & offer your best…

Most people associate Georgia with peaches, or maybe peanuts (thanks to Jimmy Carter), but I always think of barbeque ribs or creamy lobster bisque.  Random, I know.  I grew up in a suburb of Atlanta as a young girl, and barbeque ribs were a standard at least one night a week during the summer.  Once a teenager, I made treks to Savannah with my mother to have table-side Caesar salad and lobster bisque from our favorite restaurant.  I suppose every person’s food story is a unique work of non-fiction.  This next Call is your non-fiction opportunity to tell your own solo story.  Take a look…

I watched soap operas before I could talk.  More accurately, my mother used to put me in my high chair and turn on The Doctors while she enjoyed her lunch.  One day it came to an abrupt stop.  Apparently engrossed in an overly-dramatic subplot, my mother neglected to notice I had fallen asleep and face-planted in my peanut-butter-topped-bananas.  Since then, anytime my mother even see a commercial for a soap opera, the portrait of me covered in pb&b conjures guilt.  This next Call wants your portraits; the food is optional.  Love this…
