THEME: The unifying theme of the exhibition will be the color red.

DEADLINE: August 14, 2016, 11:59pm PST (*please note the time zone)

ENTRY FEE: None

AWARD: A $1000 honorarium will be offered to each selected artist/artist team per-block (8 blocks in total). Artist(s) will be selected by block, allowing for up to eight artists’ work to be selected. Each light pole will have two banners hung on it, allowing for each artist to have 6-10 images on display per-block, depending on the block. Each printed vinyl banner will be 18 inches wide by 60 inches tall, with double sided printing.

Although I prefer living in the mountains, I truly love coastal food –fresh fish, citrus squeezes & sticky sweet frozen treats. But you know what really makes me think of the beach? Muffulettas. Parsnips make me itchy. My family eats copious amount of root vegetables –carrots and turnips and beets. But the carrot’s paler cousin makes me feel like I have rolled in fiberglass insulation. Parsnips are easy to cultivate & fetch a higher price than carrots at local farmers markets. I have a friend that grows them because she never has any waste. They last forever, but even if they start to get overripe, they are a favorite treat of her retired work horse. “This series of paintings was inspired by a 1968 photograph by Ernest Withers of marchers during the Memphis sanitation workers March. Martin Luther King was assassinated while there in support of the March. The men carried signs which read ‘I am a Man’. I found it fascinating that the the phrase I grew up with was ‘I am THE Man’. The collective statement became individualistic in the age of integration. Reflecting on American history I wanted to riff and remix the text, ultimately ending with the revelation ‘I Am. Amen.’ MLK showed us that our greatest gift is our consciousness and it is up to us what we choose to do with it.” —Hank Willis Thomas

I implore you to listen. Listen. Understand your privilege, whatever it may be. Being defensive doesn’t serve you. Don’t just look at people; SEE them. Love people for their humanity — both strengths & flaws. Respect the space each person needs to work and speak and react to community in which they live. Context. Election coverage has reminded me, once again, of how context matters. Today, almost anything can known; however, without context, any statement can be made to mean anything. Are we training people to be mistrusting? Vigilant? Both? The photography of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Ronan Considine, employs long exposures to create ethereal, painterly images. I find the Rectilinear series, purposefully devoid of context, make me want to know the context. I want the how. But would the context rob me of the joy of experience alone? Again, context.

I will eat almost anything once, we’ve established this already. But, as a kid, I would not get past the lemon-furniture-polish impression I had of lemongrass and ginger.
