The Gibbs Street Gallery offers exhibitions that explore the breadth of contemporary art featuring emerging to mid-career artists. Exhibits reflect a wide range of media & experimental approaches that offer the viewer unexpected interactions with art. The gallery is approximately 1,100 sq. ft. with 16′ ceilings. Events have left me at home alone for lunch most days lately. I’m not good at eating alone. I’ll adjust eventually, but for now it is bananas & peanut butter or pasta with butter & parm. I don’t do food solo easily, but art is a much easier solo option. This next Call is a great outlet for solo work. Plus, it comes with a little bit of budget.

JURORS: Jeremy Flick is a Washington, D.C., based arts administrator, artist, and educator. He received his BFA from the University of Cincinnati & his MFA from the University of Maryland.

Sheldon Scott, a native of Pawley’s Island, SC, received his B.S. in Psychology from Francis Marion University. After years as a psychotherapist, he began a creative life as a Storyteller, Artist, Actor & Writer in 2005.

Marta Staudinger completed her master’s degree in curatorial studies in Barcelona. In 2015, she founded the LATELA Art Gallery in D.C., where she devotes her time to managing artists, organizing exhibitions & selling contemporary art.

AWARDS: The individual or group associated with the chosen proposal will receive a solo exhibition at Target Gallery from July 13 – September 3, 2017 + a $1,000 stipend.

SALES: A commission of 40% will be taken on all works sold as a result of this exhibition.

HERBS here & there & everywhere

I don’t have enough time on my hands for all the thyme I have on my hands. Thyme grows year ’round indoors, and my window sill herb pot has gone crazy. I have dried it. I have pureed it. I have infused oil. I have frozen it, and I have given it away. I can’t bring myself to throw it away. I’m hoping it will make a beautiful ground cover. My landscape will taste wonderful. He has edited & compiled numerous books as well scholarly journals about ceramic arts. He continues to make and show artwork & maintains a studio at his farm in Ohio. He currently serves as the Dir. of the School of Art Collection & Galleries for KSU School of Art & Art Critic for the Akron Beacon Journal.

AWARDS: CAN Journal Best of Show $500; 2nd Best of Show $250; Honorable Mentions $100, Brick Ceramic + Design Outstanding Work in Ceramics $75, Praxis Fiber Workshop Outstanding Work in Fiber $75; and The Sculpture Center Outstanding Work in Sculpture: $75. I received more “why food?” inquiries this week. Because. That’s the short answer. Specifically I had someone to challenge the relevancy of a food theme with all that is going on politically in the U.S. Long Answer, well, food IS political, and global. (Reminder, the world is larger than the U.S.) Regulations governing food safety couldn’t be more political. Quinoa and milk and coffee and avocados, political. Choosing the source of your food and having confidence the quality of your options is all about politics and privilege. I love food. AAAD will continue to celebrate food. JURORS: For Project Launch: Mazie M. Harris is an Assistant Curator in the J. Paul Getty Museum; Christy Havranek is the Photo Director at the Huffington Post; and Dewi Lewis established his publishing house in 1994.

For Project Development: Dewi Lewis established his publishing house in 1994. Internationally known, its authors have included photographers such as Martin Parr, Simon Norfolk, Pentti Sammallahti, Paolo Pellegrin, Sergio Larrain, and Anders Petersen as well as many younger emerging photographers.

Lavender infused whipped cream is a favorite treat in my house. But at the moment, I am growing lavender in a window sill for my husband’s head. The weather has been so beautiful that I’ve been leaving the doors open without benefit of screen doors, and every night mosquitoes make a meal of Jon’s forehead.
