I once wanted to be a Master Chef, but alas, I decided in the end that I enjoyed the eating more than the cooking. Becoming a Master Chef takes years of schooling and working in virtually every position in the kitchen to reach your end goal. Master painters are no different. As I have shouted from the rooftop on many occasions, “I am a bad painter.” However, I salute all of you that have what it takes.

CALL for ENTRIES: Salon International 2011

This juried exhibition is a project of the International Museum of Contemporary Masters and will be hosted by Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art in San Antonio, Texas.

The International Museum of Contemporary Masters (IMCM), founded in 2001, is a support system for traditional representational artists. IMCM challenges artists to always strive for a higher level of artistic excellence and is totally dedicated to the recognition, encouragement and support of contemporary, currently active, artists of traditional representational art worldwide.

The word “contemporary” in the museum’s name is to be read “of our times” and refers to currently living and active artists.

ABOUT THE HOST GALLERY: Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art is one of the most respected galleries in the United States and has been in existence for over 28 years. In August 2005, the gallery relocated to a new 12,000 sq ft. space, three times larger than the original location. While the gallery can easily accommodate 500 paintings, approximately 300 paintings will be juried into this exhibition.

JURORS: The owners of Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art, Jim Janes and Mark Smith will jury the entries. These gentlemen are responsible for the curating of the work displayed at Greenhouse Gallery and are respected throughout the art community for their curating abilities. The decision of the jury is final. There will be no refund of entry fees for unaccepted entries. Participants will be notified promptly of the jurors’ selections by mail, email and a posting on the Salon International website at si.greenhousegallery.com.

JUDGE: Daniel E. Greene, N.A. is considered one of the foremost realist painters of our time. His pastels and oil paintings have earned him countless awards and honors, and his work is included in collections throughout the world.

Among many accolades, he was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1969, elected to the Pastel Society of America’s Pastel Hall of Fame in 1983, and received lifetime achievement awards from the American Society of Portrait Artists, the Portrait Society of America, and American Artist magazine. Dan is also known as a thorough and generous instructor, as evidenced by his art instruction books and DVDs. He continues to teach workshops at his North Salem, New York, studio.

MEDIA: Original oil paintings only–no over painted photographs. Work must have been painted after April 2, 2009.

DEADLINE: January 21, 2011

AWARDS: 80+ awards ranging from half-page ads in Art Magazines to an $8000 cash award for Best of Show.

When I moved to Gatlinburg around 3 1/2 years ago, I wouldn’t live anywhere without a mountain top view. After several years up here, we are contemplating building a Storage Container house, and I really think I’m going to choose to live on the water this time–the river to be exact. And, I promise it isn’t because of the abundance of River Trout, although they are yummy eats.

Check out this Call for Entries for the 2010 Susquehanna International Fine Art Competition whose theme is River Art this year. There is no entry fee so buy a rod and reel and head to the river for a little “research.” Take a look!

CALL for ENTRIES: 2010 Susquehanna International

This year’s theme of the Susquehanna International Fine Art Competition is “River Art.” All entries must contain a river, real or imagined, in their composition.

This year’s sponsors include the Sunbury Press and West Shore Gallery. Sunbury Press, based in Camp Hill, PA, is a publisher or trade paperback and digital books. Among their offerings, Sunbury has been producing an art book line for individual artists and for art contests.

West Shore Gallery, located in Wormleysburg, PA, is a fine art gallery featuring the work of well-known and emerging artists.

THEME:
All entries must contain a river,
real or imagined in their composition.
This could be any river in the world,
or one from mythology.
The river need not be
the dominant element.

MEDIA: All entries must be two dimensional. There is no minimum or maximum size.

DEADLINE: December 10, 2010

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee.

CATEGORIES: You may enter up to three entries in each category: Oil/Acrylic, Watercolor, Drawings/Sketches, Mixed Media/Collage, Traditional Photography (black & white or color, unembellished compositions), Digital (includes painterly effects, embellishments to photography).

SUBMISSIONS:

JPG File Specs: All entries will be JPG files of low resolution — no more than 1 MB per file. Typically this means no more than 4 inches to any side and a resolution of not more than 200 dpi.

Name your jpg files with your first name, underscore, last name, underscore file number. As an example: john_smith_1.jpg

Email Entries: Send 1 email per category. You may attach up to 3 images per category. Send each category entry in a separate email.

Information to include: In the title of the email, note the artist name & category. In the body, note the attached entries, their titles & years created.

PRIZES: Grand Prize: The top entry of the competition will receive a $250 cash prize and be used as the cover image for the book “River Art” to be published in January, 2011. Category Winners: The top entry in each category will win $50 and be featured as the lead image in each chapter of the book “River Art” to be published in January, 2011.

It warms my heart that I have been able to feature so many great opportunities from my home state lately. I love art opportunities more than cheesecake…shocking, I know. The $10,000 in cash awards (including $2,000 for Best of Show) in this next show would buy a whole lotta cheesecake though.

Call for Entries: Tennessee Art League

Founded by a group of Middle Tennessee artists in 1954, and later chartered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational institution, the Tennessee Art League has enriched the lives of thousands of artists and the community as a cultural center, educational facility and art gallery for fifty-six years.

JUROR: Joseph H. Sulkowski began his studies as a painter at America’s oldest art school, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts founded in 1809. He then continued and finished his studies after five years at the venerable Art Students League of New York. There, he met his greatest influence and mentor Frank Mason, the foremost authority on the principles and techniques of the Old Masters, and became, in the very traditional sense of the word, his apprentice.

Mr. Sulkowski has received numerous awards including the AAPL Grand National Award, the Grumbacher Gold Medallion Award and the Best in Show Award at the Art in the Mountains exhibition sponsored by Southwest Art magazine. He is a signature member of the prestigious Society of Animal Artists, the National Society of Mural Painters, the National Arts Club, the American Artists Professional League, and he is a Life Member of the Art Students League of New York.

My non-art related work place is The Lodge at Buckberry Creek, a resort in the Great Smoky Mountains patterned after the Great Camps of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. So for me, the idea of the Adirondacks conjures images of hand-oiled leather couches, animal hide rugs, wood-burning fires and warm mulled cider. Thanks to this next call, it can now remind me of phenomenal art opportunities as well!

And, while I have had NY shows, I am often excited by NYC shows because of the associated opportunity to eat food from street vendors. OPPORTUNITY:
Roswell, New Mexico

Well known by artists as the “Gift of Time”, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program was established in 1967 to provide gifted studio based visual artists with the unique opportunity to concentrate on their work in a supportive, collegial environment for a whole year. This “gift of time” allows artists to work without distraction in an effort to break new ground and focus on individual goals.

The Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program serves as a contemporary counterpoint to the traditional arts of the Southwest, reinforces the Program’s interest in strengthening the vitality of art in New Mexico and has been a catalyst in broadening community understanding of contemporary art.

CURRENT DEADLINE: December 1, 2010

MEDIA: In-residence grants are offered to artists involved in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, installation and other fine art media. Grants are not made in the disciplines of performance art or production crafts.

HOUSING & STUDIO FACILITIES: The studios are large, open spaces that measure approximately 20’x25’x10′. These areas are well-lighted and convertible to the artist’s requirements within reason. The printmaking facility is a small, fully operational studio – basically lithographic/etching in nature.

Artists are housed in a complex of six houses and 10 studios located on forty acres of land. Each artist is provided with a house that can amply accommodate either a single person or a family. Rent, utilities (except telephone), repairs and maintenance costs are borne by the Program. Houses are furnished with major furniture items, appliances and utensils. (continued below)

STIPEND: A stipend, or living allowance, of $800 per month is offered along with $100 per month for every dependent living with the grantee. Currently, the cost of art materials is borne by the grantee.

FEATURED ARTIST: T.S. McFadden

CRUNCHY GOODNESS!

The $2 Art Contest is getting to be like pulling teeth. And, I can’t afford to loose my teeth. While I love silky bisques and hollandaise, a blogger cannot live by hollandaise alone. What good is the hollandaise when you’re dreaming of corn nuts and have pulled all your teeth? I think this month’s entries for the $2 Art Contest were extraordinarily tasty.

The entries I receive each month for the $2 Art Contest are incredibly varied. I see work from every imaginable media, from artists at every level of their careers–some polished and PR savvy, some more vulnerable, but honest. Because it isn’t a level playing field, it isn’t really just about choosing the best art. I love having the honor of reviewing all the work, but I am made anxious by the necessity of choosing.

The Featured Artist chosen from September entries is T.S. McFadden. McFadden’s work hits so many of the right notes for me–multiple media, over-the-top devotion to the creative process, and a love for found objects and recycled materials.

FEATURED ARTIST:
T.S. McFadden

T.S. McFadden is an intuitive artist whose prolific body of work explores process, internal dialoques and facilitation. He was born in a small town in Ohio and raised in the country. He is now based in New York.

McFadden has sculpted and painted since he was a child and is self-taught but for a handful of private lessons. He studied in the fine arts, graduated from Kent State University and has spent time in Europe studying other artists.

While I am in love with the Elephant Graveyard series on which McFadden is currently working, I chose to focus this feature on McFadden’s Mother Series of paintings. As I have shouted from the mountain tops many times, my artistic skill does not lie in painting media. But, I find my inadequacy in this area makes me appreciate the talent in others even more.

The Mother Series is what the artist calls an abstract expression of logic. That will serve as a huge contradiction for some. The next contradiction will come from the idea that these paintings are a sort of recycled assemblage.

“This series was created using remnants from my palattes, which were scraped and pulled and meant for the garbage. Too haunting and too beautiful to be discarded, they were stacked and saved for years. The kinetic energy found in the palatte is art in its purest form–it is the unintentional genesis of intention.”

There’s that logic for you.

I always send a quiz to my Featured Artist picks to gain a little insight and help me feel inspired to write. Some of the questions are food related, some are art related, some try to unveil the inspiration behind it all. What have a learned from the quizzes as a whole?

Artists don’t often like
to give direct answers, ha.

McFadden’s answers did not disappoint. When asked about his favorite foods, he reinforced the notion of contradictions. How do you claim corn nuts and sashimi among your favorites? I suspect those choices just reinforce how the pull of opposites can produce a cohesive balance.

What do you think?

When asked about his favorite media, McFadden decided upon Experimentation. Perfect.

And what school of art does feel
his work fits? Intuition.
Even more perfect.

Energy, emotion and circumstance direct him. He uses layers of color to examine, define and mask an inner world. Organic and graphic elements invade the space, push the calm and subdue the conflict.

McFadden considers his creativity intrinsic and his pronouncement of it solely environmental.

He is a painter and a sculptor, a published author, a writer of poetry and music, a furniture designer and whatever else the moment he is living in requires him to be.

Thank you, T.S. McFadden, for the Mother Series…and for reminding us of the old school definition of “artistic.” I, for one, can’t wait to see the Elephant Graveyard series!

Sometimes an egg is just an egg. Yes, I love them benedict. I love them scrambled, in caesar salad and as omelettes stuffed with goat cheese and peppers. But sometimes an egg is great just as an egg. The same is true of art. While much of this site’s attention is directed at non-respresentational and contemporary art and photography, there is such a vast American tradition of representational work that I would be remiss not to celebrate that talent and potential in my readers as well. Rachel Parker is one of my favorites.

CALL for ENTRIES: 1st Annual Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art

You are invited to enter the 1st Annual Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art. This competition will feature the finest in representational figurative, portrait, still life, floral, landscape, interior, wildlife, and western themes.

The Salon will be hosted by The Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ and will utilize the 10,000 sq. ft. upper level of the gallery. The show will be featured in national publications and a mailing will be sent to an extensive mailing list.

PRIZES: Over $25,000 in cash prizes including a $10,000 first prize for Best of Show.

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to all artists. All work submitted must be your own original design, completed independently, and must not have been exhibited previously or have been available for purchase. Representational work only.

MEDIA: Acceptable mediums include oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and all drawing media. Photography and computer generated artwork is not eligible for this competition. Artwork dimensions need to be within 192 sq. inches to 900 sq. inches (for example, 12” x 16”- 24” x 36”). Artwork must be framed and wired for hanging. Gallery wrap is acceptable, providing the painting extends and covers all four sides of the gallery wrap. No metal frames. All works submitted must be available for sale. No substitutions allowed.

SALES: The retail price must be in line with your current retail price structure in your galleries and must include frame. Proceeds from a sale will be 60% to the artist and 40% to the Salon. No marketing, catalog or advertising fees will be charged to the artists.

ENTRY FEE: A $45 entry fee covers up to 3 unique submissions. Only a maximum of two pieces can be accepted per artist. Checks, money orders, Visa or Master Card are accepted. This fee is non-refundable and must accompany your submission.

SUBMISSIONS: Only digital entries will be accepted. Entries must be submitted on one CD with each file saved in a TIFF or JPEG format at 300 dpi and 5” x 7”. No slides will be accepted. A match print of at least 4” x 6” must accompany the digital entry. The CD and match print must be labeled with the artist’s last name, first name, title, dimensions (height listed first), medium and price. For example: smith_john_sunset_20x16_oil on canvas_4500.jpg . CD’s and match prints will not be returned to artist.

DEADLINE: All entries must be postmarked on or before January 15, 2011. Entries received with a postmark date later than January 15, 2011 will not be considered. Entry acceptance will be notified though email.

Aside from food, there are a few themes that run through my blog posts. Entering academic shows can be a huge plus for all artists…but I find that emerging artists, regardless of age, really benefit most. If you get juried in to an academic exhibition, make every effort to attend the opening. You’d be amazed by how much you can learn by being a fly on the wall when no one knows you’re there. And remember, sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too…academic settings are great for art sales.

Check out this great Call for Entries for Chowan University‘s National Juried Exhibit for 2011. The entry fee is a little higher than I would like, but the juror is great and the opening is in January when many commercial galleries are on a bit of a hiatus. Take a look…

Chowan University’s National Juried Exhibition 2011

ELIGIBLE WORK: The exhibition is open to all artists, 18 years or older, residing within the United States. All work must be original and created without the aid of an instructor. Paintings, mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, original hand-made prints, photography, and drawings are all acceptable media for submission.

All two dimensional work must be framed or created on a gallery wrapped canvas. Each artist may submit up to three pieces for consideration.

SUBMISSION FORMAT: All entries must be submitted digitally via CD. Images must be saved as JPEGS at 72 dpi. Additionally, images should not be longer than 900 pixels in any direction and CDs must be viewable from a Mac or PC computer. The CD itself should be clearly labeled with your contact information: name, address, phone number, and email address. The saved images on the CD must be saved as such:

Please note that CDs will not be returned and will become the property of the Department of Visual Art at Chowan University. Images of accepted work may be used for marketing purposes.

LIMITATIONS: Works must not exceed 4 feet (48 inches) in any direction, and must not exceed 40 lbs. All 2D work must include suitable hanging mechanisms, and either be framed or created on a gallery wrapped canvas. All 3D work must be assembled and ready for exhibition upon arrival. We reserve the right to reject work for the exhibition that differs significantly from the submitted images and/or for craft issues.

LIABILITY: The gallery staff will take great care in handling artworks for exhibition. The University, gallery staff, and Department of Visual Art are not liable for any damage that may occur.

SHIPPING (please read carefully): The artist is responsible for shipping costs to and from the gallery. Call tags for returning artwork must be prearranged by the artist. Shipped works need to arrive at the gallery between January 10-14, 2011. To arrange hand delivery/ pick up please contact Carolyn Phillips at phillc@chowan.edu.

Work will not be returned to the artist if:
– no call tag is issued by the artist or
– if the artist does not prearrange pick up and retrieve the work by Friday, March 4.

Specific shipping and labeling details will be included upon notification of accepted entries.

JUROR: Maxine Payne is a photographer living and working in Arkansas, where her grandparents raised her. She received her M.F.A from the University of Iowa where she was also an Iowa Arts Fellow. Payne was selected a Fellow of the American Photography Institute at New York University, as well as a Fellow of the College Art Association.

Payne works to find ways to engage community in her work and speaks to the idea of place. Her work has been shown nationally. Currently, Maxine is an Associate Professor of Art and Departmental Chair at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. Payne has worked on photographing Arkansas Historic Bridges for the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department since 2004.

ENTRY FEES and MATERIALS: Artists are allowed to submit up to three (3) artworks for consideration, and the exhibition fee is $40.00. The Department of Visual Art Gallery does not take commission on artworks that are sold. Please send a check, made out to the Department of Visual Art- Chowan University, along with the entry form, SASE (#10 envelope) for notification, and CD to the following address:
