CALL for ENTRIES: Postmarked 2011

Learn more about the 7th Annual Mail Art Show!For many years, inmates from around the country wrote to the Prison Library Project and they were amazed by the artwork that accompanied requests for books. These beautiful illustrations were their inspiration for a mail art exhibition and fundraiser.

Postmarked was developed seven years ago for the Claremont Forum’s Prison Library Project, which sends books free to prisoners in the U.S. upon their request. Providing education and opportunity to learn about mail art, view new and established mail artists’ works, and to participate in the experience of creating and sending mail art. Now in its 7th year, this exhibition is one of the largest in California.

MEDIA: Please send submissions of mail art of any size and medium to: Postmarked 2011, Prison Library Project, 112 Harvard #303, Claremont CA 91711. ONLY the side with the official USPS Postmark/barcode will be displayed. Your mail art may be painted, stamped, collaged, printed, and/or otherwise decorated or constructed. It may be any shape and size that will go through the mail and receive an official postmark.

Your submission may get worn or torn through the mail, but the handling process is an important part of the theme. Only the side with the postmark can be displayed, due to space limitations, but the art doesn’t have to be limited to that side. You may include any message inside the envelope, which will be opened only by the person who purchases the art envelope. You may submit more than one piece… and begin sending now!

WHY SUPPORT the PLP? “Rehabilitation was at one time a stated goal of the prison system. Today, funding for most educational and rehabilitation programs, including prison libraries, has been cut or completely eliminated. It is a distressing fact that today’s U.S. prisons are increasingly about punishing people and warehousing human beings, not about, rehabilitation, or education.”

“This is where PLP steps in. We believe that everyone deserves access to literature and educational materials, including people trying to work towards social change, self-empowerment or rehabilitation within the incarceration system.

Nearly one percent of American adults are incarcerated, the highest rate in the world, but many prisoners have little access to books or educational material. They face substantial barriers and are cut off from family and friends on the outside. While some prisons have libraries, many do not. Of those that do, access and selection can be extremely limited. Usually, prisoners are not allowed to receive books from friends or family. Thus, programs like ours are one of the few options available to these individuals.” –from the PLP website.

I absolutely love heirloom vegetables. I love the idea of preserving the genetic “bloodline,” if you will, of a fruit or vegetable easily distinguished from the genetically modified, hot-house varieties we are all used to eating.  However, I can admit that sometimes a tomato is just a tomato.  This next call recognizes that sometimes art is just art.  They don’t want your CV, resume, statment or anything else–just your art.

Today, I am going to give you a time-tested Southern recipe for success.  Use sugar, not vinegar.  It worked for Mary Poppins; it will work for you.  When sending in your Calls for Entries, your submissions for the $2 Art Contest or submissions for ANY show.  Be professional, but above all else… be nice.  I am going to have to quit saying that I do not usually recommend online exhibits because here is another one.  It is a great exhibit sponsored by a great site (albeit a competitor, of sorts)Consider the benefits.

JUROR:  Holly Koons McCullough is the Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia.  She began her career at the Telfair in 1996, serving as the museum’s Curator of Education before assuming leadership of the curatorial department.

The Charlatan Ink Art Prize for the Visual Arts will be held biennially in New York from 2011 onwards, but in an innovative twist will be traveling every other year around the globe. Possible venues for 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018 are in chronological order Brisbane/Australia; Graz/Austria; Cracow/Poland and Shanghai/China.

His paintings, drawings, sculptures and happenings pull from his experiences as a youth in Australia and participating in the repetition as a father of two. Judge Winston SmithWinston Smith: From 1977 to the present: has worked on numerous Punk record covers, posters, logos and flyers for American, British and Italian bands including Dead Kennedys, D.O.A., Green Day, Lard, and spoken word projects for Jello Biafra. Also designed album art for Ben Harper, Tijuana No, Alternative Tentacles projects, Emily the Strange, George Carlin and others. Books include three volumes of Collage Art published by Last Gasp of San Francisco, as well as works in countless other books as covers and inside (both as illustrations and for personal interviews), including illustrations for magazines such as The New Yorker, Playboy, Spin, The Progressive, Mother Jones, Amazing Stories, etc.

Marlene Antico has many years of experience in sourcing and collecting fine art for private and corporate collections. As a professional art consultant, she assists her clients to develop a comprehensive, high-quality collection and in the sale of their artwork on a consignment basis when required. Marlene Antico’s expert guidance ensures that both the experienced collector and the first time buyer derive satisfaction from their art purchases. Judge JB BerkowJB Berkow: “I have been exhibiting and selling my work for more than forty years. In 1976 at age 27 I founded the most well-known cooperative gallery in the country, “Touchstone Gallery,” located in Washington, D.C. My work is in the permanent collection of the Vatican Contemporary Art Collection…not bad for a nice Jewish girl!

It has never been enough for me to show and sell my own work, for whatever reason I have always been interested in promoting other artists’ work. That is the reason that I went on to found “Frenchman’s Art Gallery and Studios, Inc.” in 1994 and opened “RosettaStone Fine Art Gallery” and “RosettaStone Corporate Art Consulting.”

Ed McCormack, a former columnist and feature writer for Rolling Stone, and one of the original contributing editors of Andy Warhol’s Interview, has written extensively on art and popular culture for the Village Voice and numerous other publications. Presently, with his wife Jeannie McCormack, he co-publishes the New York art journal Gallery & Studio. McCormack’s most pressing present project is a memoir called Hoodlum Heart,” of which he says, “It’s all about what it was like to be the test dummy for the crash and burn generation, an epic work of shameless name-dropping and self-libel that is bound to create a scandal.”

Judge Bing DaweBing Dawe: Since graduating from the University of Canterbury School of fine Arts in the mid 1970s Bing Dawe has exhibited extensively throughout New Zealand and overseas. He has held over 40 solo exhibitions including a major survey exhibition at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery in his home town of Christchurch in 1999. His work is held in most public and private collections in New Zealand. In 1999 he was the winner of a major national art award, The Visa Gold James Wallace Award.

The Winner of the inaugural Charlatan Ink Art Prize for the Visual Arts 2011 shall receive the Charlatan Ink Art Prize Silver Ink Well and US$ 25,000.00 in Prize Money.

The artist with the second highest point score awarded by the jury shall receive the Charlatan Ink Encouragement Prize, which includes a 6 week artist residency at the Carlton Arms Hotel, New York*, a Canon G11 Camera and US$ 1,000.00.

Furthermore Endeavor Printing will print an exhibition catalog (softcover, max. 75 pages in an edition of 200) for an exhibition the artist might undertake within the next twelve months of the Second Prize win.

The artist with the third highest point score awarded by the jury shall receive a twelve months art expose on the CHARLATAN INK Website, hosting the artist’s portfolio.

I grew up with a single father from age 3 to 13, and it was a culinary adventure.  One of my fondest memories is of weekend-long motorcycle trips when I was around 8.  We’d climb on and hit the road.  I would freeze in the morning early-morning air.  My father’s solution?  We’d stop at every other golden arches we could find for french fries and hot fudge sundaes.  This next Call is a whole different way to celebrate two-wheeled freedom.

Nature Abstract by Juror Susan LehmanJURORS:  Susan Lehman, Oregon artist and art educator, began life-long passion for motorcycles that began with her first ride on the back of a restored 1951 Vincent Black Shadow. Fans of British café-style racers, she and her husband have owned and ridden dozens of motorcycles. Susan’s formal art training was at California College of Arts in Oakland, CA. She has co-produced two juried art exhibitions for the museum.

Philip Koenen, Since an early age, Philip has had two passions; motorsports and film making. Among the founding students of the now famous Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University, Philip was asked to join the Eisaman, Johns & Laws advertising agency to work on the U.S. Suzuki motorcycle account and later to be the Executive Producer for their Film and Television Department. In 1983, he joined the Stunt Driving Team, Driver’s Inc. the clientele of which included Ferrari, Jaguar, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. In 1984 he left advertising to follow his passion for building and restoring automobiles. Today Philip continues to successfully operate Grand Touring Garage with a worldwide clientele.

Artwork by Christiaan Dutch MostertChristiaan “Dutch” Mostert, is an internationally recognized watercolor artist. Born in Holland he received early training from his artist father. A full-time freelance artist since 1978, his travels through Europe, Africa the Middle East and the Pacific Rim countries have provided him with a wealth of subject matter for his works. Though known for marine subjects Dutch has also developed a love of classic vehicles.

Mike Boyle, is an avid collector of vintage Motorcycles. He began restoring cars and motorcycles in 1964. For 32 years he owned and operated a large repair and restoration business in San Diego. Since his move to Coos Bay in 2006 he does restoration work only on his own collections of cars and motorcycles.

Artwork by Juror Mike HolmMichael Holm, works primarily in digitally manipulated photography, printmaking and design. He has had a life-long interest in motorcycles. Mike received a BA in Art and photography from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has been instrumental in the upcoming exhibition of motorcycles and motorcycle art.

AWARDS:  First Place Award will receive cash prize of $500, Second Place Award will receive cash prize of $350, Third Place Award will receive cash prize of $250 and Four Honorable Mention ribbons will also be awarded.

SALES:  Works in the exhibition may be available for sale. Artist agrees to donate 30% of any sale as commission to Coos Art Museum.

Learn more about Deanna Bowdish online!Like many of you, my life is frenzied and full of things that I love… and things that I don’t.  So, I have a soft spot for visual places to rest, for work that makes me smile.  I am tickled pink when I later find beautiful theory behind the work afterall.

This month’s artist has brought a ray of sunshine into my gray February.

 

The Featured Artist chosen from January’s entries is painter Deanna Bowdish. Bowdish’s work is a happy place.  The work is like a challenging tromp uphill through the daises… in 4″ heels.

FEATURED ARTIST:
Deanna Bowdish

 

Deanna Bowdish was born in Solon, Ohio in 1976.  As a toddler, flopping her red paint-soaked body across moms green shag carpeting, Deanna’s father was assured of his daughter’s innate sense for color and balance.  A trip to France and Italy at age 16 to study the great masters compelled Deanna to give up her parents’ hopes of her going into the medical field.  After considerable negotiations with her parents and the promise of an “employable minor,” she was able to follow her dreams and concentrate on a fine art career.  Bowdish painted in the Minneapolis metropolitan area for seven years featuring works in several shows and galleries. 

From the Ripple Series by Featured Artist Deanna Bowdish!In 2002 Deanna stumbled into the Lowcountry of South Carolina to house sit for her sister and began exhibiting at The Gallery in Beaufort, South Carolina.  Bowdish subsequently purchased The Gallery in 2004 fulfilling a long-held dream and creating one of the most dynamic and eclectic assemblies of art in the region.  

She is always experimenting with a new material or a new way of achieving a different outcome with the same materials.  She loves to challenge traditional methods and break the rules.  But when Isuggested her work might be mixed media, I found that she really considers herself a painter.  Take a look at her beautiful commissioned pieces of functional artwork pictured below at the Breakwater restaurant in Beaufort, SC. 

“I consider my work painting and myself a painter, my process just happens to incorporate mixed media right now.  Once I am happy with the painted surface, I then begin the destruction of my creation, usually the most stressful part as I am always hesitant about cutting up such a magnificent creation, but then I quickly recover and go to town with my exacto knife.”

Her work is an explosion of color and texture, creating a frenzy of energy and movement, very much like her own life.  Deanna seeks to find harmony and balance amongst the frenzy.   

Learn more about Featured Artist Deanna Bowdish!“The large surfaces are cut down into smaller components in preparation for the next stage in my process. These pieces are either woven or sewn back together depending on the final piece that I am creating. 

The ripple series is woven then mounted to a permanent surface and covered with resin.  The quilts are sewn back together using the sewing machine.  The final construction phase for both processes is quite exciting as I see a whole new painting coming to life before my eyes.”

“I feel overwhelmed by all the infromation that is thrown or forced at me; emails, mail, texts, television, tweets, facebook alerts, radio ads, billboards, its everywhere coming at me from all angles.”

My life is a game of dodgeball —
me against the information age. 

“The frenzy and frequency of this information could be crippling, but I choose to challenge the waves of information and reintroduce it in my own painted language.”

From the Ripple Series by Featured Artist Deanna Bowdish!But what about the food?  This IS, afterall, a food-themed art blog.  I don’t know if I just attract foodie-artists or artistic foodies.  Or, maybe artists just think that food is the way to my heart because most of the artists I interview have phenomenal culinary tastes.  When Bowdish’s secret tastes were probed?  Pizza and Hawaiian kettle chips.  No joking.  Her honesty is as refreshing as her artwork.

There are a few questions I’m going to have to quit asking… What school of art do you think your work falls into?  The answer is always “an eclectic mixture,” but I think Bowdish’s influences, living and deceased, may be more telling than the amalgumation she claims.  Deceased influence?  20th century abstract expressionist painter Richard Diebenkorn.  One of her living influences?  Painter turned sculptor, Laura Lloyd.  I see how the pieces fit together.

I am really restless for Spring.  I want to walk shoeless through cold grass, and Deanna Bowdish got me as close as I can ask.  Thank you!

CALL for ENTRIES: Botanical Art Show

I want to grow my own food.  I WANT to, but when the day starts, I pull on my stilettos and head off to my air-conditioned office where all attempts at growing house plants have withered and died. 

There are no secret overalls and garden clogs in my closet. 

 

I don’t even have fruit trees in  my yard.  My husband and I are thinking of building a shipping container house; maybe I should look for property with fruit trees.  Stilettos AND home-grown food.  If you don’t have a green thumb, this Call will let you take inspiration from nature even if you didn’t grow it.

ENTRY FEE:  No more than 5 entries may be submitted per artist. 1 entry $15; each additional entry is $5. Entry fees are non-refundable.

SALES:  K.A.S. Gallery will add a 30% commission fee to the selling price of an art piece. Should your work sell, K.A.S. will retain a 30% commission. K.A.S. will collect sales tax from buyer and pay KY State sales tax.

AWARDS:  Accepted artists may be considered for future group and/or solo shows.

I am a collector at heart.  I enjoy having odd jars of condiments just a cabinet door away.  I love having kitchen gadgets and utensils that I only have reason to use once a year.  But what I most love to collect is art.  I have art stuffed in every nook and cranny of my house. 

As I type, I am watched by a little carving of late artist Bob Ross (click here for image) who came in his own little cigarette box marked “Bob in a Box” part of a series by Bob Snead that included Bob Villa, Bob Dobb and more, whom I met Founder of Redux.  This next show gives YOU a chance to be both collected and a collector!

Check out this Call for Entries from the Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) for the 6x6x2011 Global.  There is no entry fee for up to 10 submissions.  This show is all hung, looks great on your resume, and benefits a great member of the art community!

Click to Learn More about 6x6x2011!Help RoCo build an exhibition of artworks from ALL 50 US States and more countries than last year. Please invite everyone you know to send their artwork early.  6×6 began as a small fundraising exhibition, but has grown into an international art phenomenon. 

Last year over 5,000 artworks
from 43 US States & 22 Countries were entered in this
astounding exhibition!

 

6x6x2011: Global is the fourth exhibition of thousands of original artworks, made and donated by celebrities, international and local artists, designers, college students, youths, and YOU.  Each artwork will be 6×6 square inches and signed only on the back, to be exhibited anonymously.  All artworks will be for sale to the public for $20 each to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo).  Artist names will be revealed to the buyer only upon purchase and all works will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition

AWARDS:  3 prizes will be awarded by popular vote. Vote for your favorite artwork in the 6x6x2011 Online Gallery. Voting closes on July 1, 2011.  First Place: $360, Second Place: $120, and Third Place: $60.

Usually when I think of NYC, I think of street food vendors.  However, I can only write so much about filafel, hot dogs and pizza.  So, searching my memory for another favorite culinary delight from my last trip to New York, I thought… crepes from Suzette’s.  I love crepes, and one of my favorite places to get them is in the neighborhood with the gallery sending out this next call.

JUROR:  William Bailey is represented in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art.  Bailey was elected to the National Academy of Design and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and is represented by the Betty Cuningham Gallery, where he had his most recent exhibition in 2010.  Mr. Bailey taught for many years at Yale, and maintains studios in New Haven and Italy.

Learn more about the artists of the Prince Street Gallery!ABOUT THE GALLERY:  Prince Street Gallery represents contemporary figurative and abstract artists.  The gallery first opened its doors on Prince Street in SoHo in 1970. 

Prince Street Gallery originally emerged out of the Alliance of Figurative Artists and continues to broaden from its roots.  During its founding years the gallery received encouragement from The New York State Council on the Arts in the form of grants supporting exhibitions and a catalogue. 

In 1980, the gallery moved to Wooster Street where it remained until 2001 when it reopened at 530 West 25th Street in Chelsea.
