mussels

So, I’ve been out of town without my husband.  That’s mean’s I have consumed huge amounts of shellfish.  He’s allergic, and when he’s not around, I tend to over indulge.  I don’t know how anyone lives with wine-steamed mussels with garlic butter.  How does so much flavor exist in such a tiny package?  Is it wrong that I hope to travel again soon just to have mussels?  Maybe so.  This next Call is all about packing a  big wallop in a small package.  Take a look…

with my satay, please

Food has interrelation–be it natural or forced.  In the US, peanut butter is only naturally related to grape jelly, but it is fantastic with raspberry jam.  PB&J has a distinct meaning apart from its separate components.  My immediate connection with peanut butter is peanut sauce, but my connection to PB&J is childhood comfort.  Odd, eh?  This next show is about the interrelation of work, one deriving meaning from the other.  I like this theme…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Northbrook Public Library (Northbrook, IL) for their annual juried show, called Social Media Artshow this year. The entry fee is reasonable. Art is the original social media: it reaches out and draws together, trying to make connections. It incites discussion and draws meaning through relationships. We are looking for works that are either created in a series or multiple elements (like diptychs) that generate meaning through their interrelation, or works that react to existing famous artworks. The mathematics are simple: one is quotidian and two is exponential.

I’ve never been accused of being overly maternal.  However, my kid will be 14 years old soon, so I must have done something right.  He now eats brussel sprouts and asparagus.  Another point in my favor–well, OUR favor.  It was actually my husband that spent the first 12 years of our kid’s life being the more maternal one.  To hell with gender roles.  Whatever works is my motto.  This next Call wants your slant on being a woman.  Approx. 52% of you should have a bird’s eye view of this one…

The natural result of my food obsession is that I have tried every diet on the planet, or so it would seem.  One of the funniest (and most futile) was to use only 6″ x 6″ square plates.  The thought is that you could fool your brain into thinking you had eaten a full-size plate of food while only actually consuming the smaller portion.  The one problem with that plan is that I’m not that easily suggestible.  Is anyone?  This is the next Call is a far better use of the 6″ square.  Take a look…
