CALL for ENTRIES: Catawampus

I am not a fan of baby talk. I don’t like it when adults talk to children in that voice and I certain don’t like to hear grown women use that tone. However, as an adult, I seem to have developed a Suess-ian fondness for making up words where there is no need outside of making them rhyme. I have not excuse. None. And, I’m thinking that my unnecessarily made up, substitute name for fried chicken, “chicky wicky” (yes, I wish I were kidding) will not make it into the dictionary as some verbal creation inevitably do–like the name of this show.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Northbrook Public Library for their Annual Juried Show. The entry fee is reasonable. There is NO COMMISSION taken by the show promoters, and this year’s theme ought to get you out of a rut and ready for the Spring art season!

CALL for ENTRIES: Catawampus

The Northbrook Public Library announces a call for entries for its 9th annual international juried art show held October 14 through November 30, 2011. Artists should consider the theme, “Catawampus,” as a playful exploration of life turned on its head or simply an acknowledgment of what is different or a bit askew. Prizes include a $2,000 purchase prize as well as numerous other prizes.

ELIGIBILITY: The show is open to artists 18 years and older.

MEDIA: 2 and 3 dimensional art executed within two years of entry date and not previously been displayed in the library.

DEADLINE: May 31, 2011

NOTIFICATION: July 17, 2011

ENTRY FEE: Entry fee is $35. Checks payable to the Northbrook Public Library. A maximum of 3 entries per artist fee will be judged.

JURY PROCESS: Artists should be cognizant that the exhibition is open to the general public and artwork must be viewable for all ages. Pieces will be judged on artistic quality and execution as well as thematic relevance. Artists should consider the theme, “Catawampus,” as a playful exploration of life turned on its head or simply an acknowledgement of what is different or a bit askew. The library, with juror guidance, reserves the right to accept or reject any piece for show inclusion.

SALES & COMMISSION: The NPL does NOT charge a commission for show participation. All sales inquires will be referred to the artists. Contact information, provided by the artist, will be listed in the online and printed show catalog to facilitate sales. The only sale to be handled by the NPL will be the purchase of the first-place award winner.

AWARDS: One (1) $2000 purchase prize, one (1) second place cash award of $1000, one (1) third place cash award of $500, and two (2) Viewer’s Choice cash awards of $200.

I do, begrudgingly, limit my consumption of lots and lots of things, from alcohol to lard and many processed foods–just not chocolate. 19th Annual International Juried Miniature Show

Parklane Gallery in Kirkland, WA welcomes miniature artists from across the country and around the world to enter their 19th Annual International Miniature Show, May 3 – June 5.

ELIGIBILITY: Entries are admitted to the show following strict adherence to the international definition of miniature art:

1. Miniature paintings and sculptures are fine art on a small scale with minute attention to detail which can be enlarged or withstand close inspection without revealing any faults.

2. A representational subject should be no larger than 1/6th of its actual size. Subjects too small for portrayal in 1/6th or smaller than their actual size, may meet the spirit of a miniature if the work meets the above definition of miniature art. Non-representational work such as abstracts or surrealism may meet the spirit of a miniature if all other factors in the definition of a miniature are met.

3. Image size not to exceed 25 square inches (161cm). Sculptures may not exceed 8 inches (20.5cm) in any dimension, including the base.

MEDIA: Photography, computer-generated art and any art that does not conform to miniature art and hanging guidelines will not be accepted. Artists may view or download the American Miniaturists’ Association Guidebook for additional information.

ENTRY FEE: US Funds Only. First entry fee is $25.00 plus $5.00 for each additional entry, up to 7 total entries. Additionally, for mailed entries there is a flat $12 handling fee for return shipment via ordinary parcel post. Shipping fees are refunded if all work is sold. Local artists who hand-carry paintings to the gallery are not required to pay the shipping fee.

JUROR: James F. Smith is currently teaching at Portland Community College, adult classes at the Walters Cultural Art Center and at Cornell Estates, as well as the Sequoia Gallery in Hillsboro, Oregon. He has exhibited his works in several International shows including the Cider Painters of America and the Seaside Gallery in North Carolina. He has won a number of awards from the Cider Painters in past years including 2010. He has also exhibited at numerous galleries on the Oregon Coast and in the Portland, Oregon areas.

AWARDS: Jurors will award Best of Show $500, 1st Place $300, 2nd Place $200, PLUS Numerous Sponsor Awards.

I am not typically a food peeler. With the obvious exception of bananas, oranges and pineapple (and a few others), I don’t often peel fruits or vegetables–from cucumbers to potatoes, apples to tomatoes. That’s why I eat nectarines not peaches–no fuzz. And I long for the days before fruits showed up in our grocery stores covered in shiny coats of wax. This next call from the IEA is a far better use for wax than my apples.

CALL for ENTRIES: Consequential Fusion

Encaustic art has seen a resurgence in popularity since the 1990s with people using electric irons, hotplates and heated stylus on a variety of different surfaces including card, paper and even pottery. The iron makes producing a variety of artistic patterns elementary. However, the medium is not limited to just abstract designs, it can be used to create complex paintings, just as in other media such as oil and acrylic.

MEDIA: Two and three dimensional encaustic art. Size is limited to 24″ x 36″ for wall hung art, 24″ x 30″ x 30″ for three-dimensional pieces

I am puzzled by folks who dislike the mildest of foods like potatoes. But, I realize that taste and opinion vary from person to person. Peace is something I’ve never known anyone to dislike. While opinions vary as to how we should achieve it, everyone seems to agree that it is worth pursuing. This call is another chance to say it with art… Peace Now.

CALL for ENTRIES: Peace Now

Peace Now is an effort to show individuals how they can integrate meaningful acts of peace into their everyday activities. Peace is not just a concept that is ‘out there’ but a possibility and a way of being that exists within each of us. In fact, for true peace to reign, we all must be participants. A broad interpretation of the concept of “Peace Now” is encouraged for submissions to this show. The chosen entries will be exhibited in downtown Pozos at Gallery 6, #6 Plaza Principal, Mineral de Pozos, Guanajato Mexico with an opening reception on July 2, 2011.

ELIGIBILITY: They encourage merging or established artists age 18 or older creating 2 and 3 dimensional original works from all cultures, religions, and creative walks of life, to participate, connect, share resources, and help find solutions for a better world.

MEDIA: Accepted media include drawing, painting, traditional or digital photography, mixed media, printmaking, wood, paper, enamels, glass, metalsmithing, collage, any work where the subject matter reflects the exhibition theme. Crafts, film/video, kit work, and reproductions are not accepted.

CALL for ENTRIES: Open to Interpretation

Open to Interpretation is a juried book competition of photography, poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction. Each book begins with a themed call for photos. The chosen photos become the literary inspiration for the writers’ submissions. A book is created that matches each winning photo with two stories or poems that offer different interpretations of the image. The unique collaboration adds new dimensions to both the photos and the written word.

JUROR: As founder and director of Vision Quest Photo Workshops, Douglas Beasley provides workshops that emphasize personal expression and creative vision over the mechanics of camera use. He believes in helping each student find their voice rather than making pretty pictures. Much of his personal work, including Sacred Sites of the Lakota, Disappearing Green Space, Silent Witness: Genocide and the Landscape, Sacred Places and Earth Meets Spirit are supported by grants and commissions and have been widely exhibited and collected. His second book Earth Meets Spirit will be coming out in late 2010. Doug continues to explore the notion of what is sacred in his photography and in his life. He lives in a passive solar home surrounded by trees in Saint Paul, MN. When not out traveling the world he can be found tending his Japanese gardens or enjoying a strong cup of coffee while listening to loud music. Personal heroes include Jimi Hendrix, the Dalai Lama and whoever invented the espresso machine.

I have so many, and I love infomercials so much that if I didn’t have strict guidelines in place, I would definitely have to open a kitchen gadget ebay store to justify all of my late-night expenditures. ART PUBLICATION: International Survey

Crussell Fine Arts is pleased to announce an open call for our summer 2011 reference journal: International Survey. This fine art periodical will be a reference book for curators, gallery directors and collectors, which will assist them in the development of shows and collections.

ELIGIBILITY & MEDIA: Artists who work in all medias to submit three outstanding pieces created within the past two years. Selected artists will be included in the summer 2011 edition of International Survey with a single image of their work and direct contact information.

DEADLINE: All submissions should be postmarked by May 1, 2011.

The end result of that oversight is over-baked brownies, extra-crunchy crostini, dried-out lasagna and the more-than-occasional burned frozen pizza… not to mention the frantic run to the oven while muttering explicatives after realizing that I am too late to save tonight’s dinner. Chicken soup is the ideal healing food for some. I prefer what my family calls cardboard pizza and chips ‘n’ onion dip. Nope, there no sense in it, but that is my food habit when sick. I can’t tell you how many people I know that turned to art when they became desperately sick or injured. The creation of art can be cathartic, and having work available when you are sick has a way of transporting you away from your own situation. The community art exhibition space at Holy Cross Hospital is located in the busy concourse of the Professional and Community Education Center on the lobby level.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists, groups or organizations who live and/or are located in the aforementioned areas or whose works are of a local interest, or those that pertain to a special theme designated by the hospital. Editor’s Note: They give preference to locals, but you don’t have to be local.

MEDIA: Oil, watercolor, charcoal, acrylic, drawings, mixed media, digital graphics, and photography are acceptable forms of media. The maximum size of the work to be displayed is 32in X 40in and 30 pounds.

DEADLINE: Applications are now being accepted through May 2011 for consideration of exhibits during July 2011 through June 2012.

ENTRY FEE: No Entry Fee.

COMMISSION: There is no charge to hang work in their gallery. They ask for a 10% donation of any sales to be given to the Holy Cross Hospital. Foundation.

The Power of Self 2011 is an international, all-encompassing open call for artwork that celebrates the self-portrait, awarding one year of your life, paid for. One of my very favorite foods as a kid was animal crackers. I liked to line them up in pairs and then bite off their heads and legs before eating the bodies. A little gruesome, and I’m not certain what that says about me. But I do crack my goldfish crackers in half before I eat them even now. Do food interpreters (like dream interpreters) exist? Clearly I need one. My prescription? Buy a box of animal crackers for inspiration before entering this next call.

CALL for ENTRIES: 3×3 Mag Children’s Show

More than just children’s books. More than just children’s books published in the United States. This competition includes anything and everything related to reaching children under the age of 12.

ELIGIBILITY: Any work produced or published in the calendar year 2010. Entries need not be published in 2010 as long as the imagery was produced during that time period. Entries are accepted from every country. Published and non-published work is eligible. Entries may be made by the illustrator, art director, author, editor or publisher.

MEDIA: Children’s books—published and unpublished, book covers—published or unpublished, children’s illustration—published or unpublished, educational materials, editorial, children’s programming, miscellaneous and young adult.

DEADLINE: Deadline for the Children’s Show is April 22, 2011. Entries must be upload or postmarked no later than this date.

ENTRY FEE: Single entries are $30—single title or single illustration, Series entries (3-5 titles by the same illustrator or a series of illustrations with the same theme) are $35.

JURORS: The international panel of judges for this year’s 3×3 Children’s Show include Paolo Canton, Publisher, Tipipittori, Italy, Cynthia Matthews, Creative Director, Mudpuppy, Yvonne Silver, Art Buyer, Scholastic, Christine Kettner, Art Director, Clarion and Harcourt Children’s Books and illustrators Camilla Engman, Sweden and André da Loba, Portugal—presently residing in the US.

AWARDS: They will award Gold, Silver, Bronze and Distinguished Merit awards and a Best of Show Award. All winners will be featured in the 3×3 Illustration Annual No. 8, winners receive a complimentary copy of the publication.
