While in Phoenix recently, I discovered that our hosts were lucky to have an orange tree in their back yard. Every morning I went out back to the sweet smell of orange blossoms and the overwhelmingly loud buzzing of bees. I am inspired by the smell and sound. I wonder if I can get an orange tree to grow in my Smoky Mountain yard? This next Call is from California — where they have no problem getting orange trees to grow either.

ELIGIBILITY: Sebastopol Center for the Arts invites artists living in the U.S.A. to submit work to Bibliophoria II.

MEDIA: We are looking for artwork created in the form of handmade artist’s books—using traditional bookmaking methods, or contemporary, unconventional structures, or made by altering existing books. Open to any method, in any media, on any subject.

NOTIFICATION: June 3, 2011 – posted on their website. Editor’s Note: If you hate the notification by post to website as much as I do, make sure you tell them AFTER they post results. This practice will become more and more common if you don’t speak up.

ENTRY FEE: SCA members, $15 per entry or 3 entries for $35 (membership is $40 annually). Nonmembers, $20 per entry, or 3 entries for $50. Maximum, 3 entries per artist.

JUROR: Sas Colby has more than forty years of experience making, exhibiting and teaching art. Her artwork has been exhibited and collected nationally and internationally. She made her first artist’s book in 1972 and is considered a pioneer in the field. A survey exhibition, Sas Colby: Twenty Years of Book Thinking, was shown in numerous venues in 1995. Colby has been a visiting artist in Australia and colleges throughout this country. She currently teaches workshops in Taos, New Mexico; Mallorca, Spain; and at the San Francisco Center for the Book.

AWARDS: $200 Best of Show; $50 Coordinators Award, and Merit Awards.

Turns out–not so much. The grass is still green there. Trees still grow there. And my favorite restaurant sampling during my trip turned out to be Mediterranean influenced tappas at Pita Jungle. CALL for ENTRIES: Modern Landscape

Dacia Gallery is seeking entries for a month-long group show by emerging artists for a Juried, Landscape Exhibition. They are looking for a wide range of styles that push the realms of the modern landscape. All artwork must have a concentration on the landscape. The artwork may be traditional landscapes, flowers in the landscape or urban cityscapes; the figure in the landscape or interior exterior artwork that features spaces with landscapes as well as abstract landscapes. The work may be plein air paintings or straight from the studio, or simply imaginary inspirations that show landscapes from the visual experience of the artist.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: Acceptable media include painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and mixed media.

DEADLINE: April 17, 2011

ENTRY FEE: You may submit up to 10 images for a curation fee of $25.00. Payment of the curation fee is final.

JUROR: Thomas Legaspi currently teaches Art History and studio courses in Drawing and Painting at St. John’s University in Manhattan. His primary focus is realism, landscapes and the figure. Thomas is also published by Oxford University on his treaties on Art and Culture in the West. His artwork has been exhibited in New York City, nationally and internationally at the State National Museum of Kazakhstan, and in private and corporate collections. Thomas lives and works in New York City where he has his private art studio.

ART PUBLICATION: Three Magazines

Magazines are skinny lately.

Have you noticed?

I suppose online zines are shrinking the proverbial waist of the magazine industry just as online newspapers are making words on newsprint less and less common.

My advice? Eat a doughnut.

Most folks want the instant gratification of Google that ends in a digital zine. Information sought. Information found. But…

I still love the feel of paper, inky or slick, in my hands. I don’t own a digital reader because I still buy books. I subscribe to Conde’ Nast Traveler so I can fill my dreams with tours of gilded Russian palaces and sunny Italian beaches. I have recently re-subscribed to Rolling Stone after a hiatus of more than 10 years, and trust me, more than just Keith Richards needs some fattening up.

Eat a doughnut, folks.

So why am I babbling on about magazines? It is a question of legitimacy. I have had lots of conversations with lots of subscribers and friends about what constitutes artistic legitimacy or “making it,” aside from the ability to support oneself artistically.

Is it an academic pedigree or a resume of academic acceptance? Is it great reviews or stunning retail sales? Is it merely a well-hung cohesive show with “guts” and meaning? I don’t know, sorry. I can teach you how to get a show, but I can’t teach you how to be happy with it.

So, for all of you whose artistic dream is to be on the cover of the Rolling Stone, here’s a short menu of great art magazines…get to work.

1. The Artist’s Magazine. This is the first art mag I every owned. I was inspired by the work…wanted to be a painter…wanted my work to be featured among its pages. That hasn’t worked out for me so far, but their Annual Art Competition has a looming deadline so don’t procrastinate.

2. Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine (pronounced Jucks-tah-pozz) is a magazine created in 1994 by a group of artists and collectors including Robert Williams Fausto Vitello, C.R. Stecyk III, and Greg Escalante, to both help define and celebrate urban alternative and underground contemporary art. Anytime I have an art block, I find flipping through an issue of Juxtapoz inspires me.

Unique in the field of publishing, Juxtapoz emerged at a critical moment during the genesis of the late-20th Centuy underground art movement with the mission of connecting seminal modern genres like psychedelic and hot rod art, graffiti, street art, and illustration, to the context of broader more historically recognized genres of art like Pop, assemblage, old master painting, and conceptual art.

ARTnews Magazine

3. ARTnews is the oldest and most widely circulated art magazine in the world. Its readership of 200,000 in 123 countries includes collectors, dealers, historians, artists, museum directors, curators, connoisseurs, and enthusiasts.

Published eleven times a year, ARTnews reports on the art, personalities, issues, trends and events shaping the international art world. I originally became an art gallery owner because I couldn’t afford the art I loved, and I wanted to be responsible for making at least some of the art I loved affordable. But I assure you that your friendly blogger didn’t invent the idea of affordable art. Neither did Art-O-Mat, but I love their take.

What is an Art-o-mat?

I love that more exotic foods are available in virtually any grocery store. I live in a pretty small town, but because we have a large tourist population, the grocery store selections are a little better. With Spring just around the corner, tabbouleh salad is calling my name. Ten years ago, I would had to have gone in search of an ethnic or gourmet market and paid $10 for a bad boxed mix. Now it is as simple as taking a trip to my local Food City. Once again, my food world has intersected with my art world… this Call for Entries is a great example of new ideas in art accessibility. Check out this Call for Entries for the 2011 Spring Exhibition at The Byte Gallery–an interactive kiosk at Transylvania University in Kentucky. This show is free to enter, and I love the accessibility feature.

CALL for ENTRIES: 2011 Spring Exhibition

The Byte Gallery is an interactive kiosk dedicated to exhibiting digital art, music, video, and other multimedia works by artists, dramatists, and musicians from around the world. Users control the kiosk with a touch interface, exploring and listening to works via a large digital display and headphones. Transylvania University is located in Lexington, Kentucky, USA.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists.

MEDIA: The Digital Print/Still Image category is for fixed/still images where digital technology as an essential part of the creative process. The Electro-Acoustic Music category is for stereo works of music/sound art. These works should be electronically/digitally conceived and produced. In other words, these should not be recordings of vocal or instrumental acoustic compositions. It is certainly acceptable, however, that works may be derived from acoustic sound sources.

The Video Music category is for works that explore non-narrative abstraction with equal emphasis on electro-acoustic music/sound art and moving images. The video should be accompanied by stereo audio. The Dramatic Video category is theatrical work of short video/film where digital technology as an essential part of the creative process. The video should be accompanied by stereo audio, unless it is intentionally silent. If the work includes sound, it must be stereo. The Animation category is for video works that explore non-narrative abstraction with primary emphasis on moving images. Works may or may not include sound. If the work includes sound, it must be stereo.

DEADLINE: Submissions must be received no later than April 14, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: There is no entry fee.

SUBMISSIONS: Submission is through email only—do not attach anything to the email, instead provide links to your application materials. Completed submissions will include:

The strangest thing I’ve ever eaten is Fugu, also known as Japanese pufferfish. What was strange was that I ate it in the USVI at the hands of a Japanese Chef who sold me on eating it BECAUSE #1 it was FREE and #2 it could kill me if prepared improperly. No meal is worth dying for, folks; ahhh, the stupidity of being eighteen. Well, clearly, I didn’t die, and unfortunately, I don’t really remember the taste due to my adrenaline-fueled expectation that I could, at any moment, drop dead. In hindsight, I don’t REALLY know what I ate. Hmmm. This next call for art may be the strangest of its sort I’ve ever seen as well–at least for an Art Exhibit. Take a look…

Saint Spotting

On the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of St. Mary Joseph Rossello (1811 – 1880), the Institute of the Daughters of Mercy announces an international contest to bring to light the work of the founder, Mother Mary Joseph, born near Savona, Italy, and proclaimed Saint in 1949 for her incessant actions to assist the needy and promote social integration through the creation of educational and health institutes.

Creative people, such as filmmakers, photographers, cartoonists, graphic and fashion designers, songwriters, musicians, etc… are asked to promote a product which is most definitely unusual. The challenge for creative artists worldwide is to create advertising for a SAINT, as if it is a product just like any other product in need of an ad campaign.

“WE’RE SEEKING a way to advertise a Saint with an unusual perspective, not necessarily religious, focusing primarily on the historical figure of this great woman, Mother Mary Joseph Rossello .”

ELIGIBILITY: Open to a variety of creative people around the world (minimum age 16), the competition will be held in two editions, English and Italian.

MEDIA: Each partecipant can submit only one work and choose only one of the following categories: 1. Audiovisual: Video clip, Commercial Ad, Animation orShort Film 2. Frogs’ legs are one of the better-known delicacies of French and Cantonese cuisine. They are also eaten in other regions, such as the Caribbean, Portugal, Slovenia, northwest Greece, Italy, Spain, and the Midwest southern regions of the United States. A type of frog called the edible frog is most often used for this dish. They are often said to taste like chickenbecause of their mild flavor, with a texture most similar to chicken wings. I like them with a side cucumber-dill yogurt. Yum. There is no witty food/art connection today–I just love frog legs, and jumped at the opportunity. hehehe. You cannot consume this next opportunity from Toad, at least not literally, but it does sound delicious. Take a look…

Toad comprises any number of species of artists of the creative order, often characterized by their exciting work, thick skin, and wart-like ideas. To maintain its lively form, Toad cultivates bimonthly issues with rotating editors and staff to ensure that the content stays fresh and diverse.

Every other month Toad showcases new poetry, prose, and visual art. As an ever-evolving amphibian, the editors of Toad select artists (“toadists”) from one of three pools: the first is a flourishing man-made pond, supplied with recommendations offered by previous contributors. The second is their sportive, always popular pool of open submissions. Lastly but not leastly, is the puddle-wonderful artistic response forum, which collects creative kickback from readers to establish an art orgy for all to enjoy.

MEDIA: They want it all: videos, music, collaborative projects, ekphrastic works, genre-crossing/bending art, and of course, all the usual suspects with Verbal Kint included.

Everyday around 11am I post “what’s for lunch” hoping it will nourish you creatively for the day. Many of you receive my posts by email making them breakfast for you–the most important meal of the day. With my own art show only days from opening, I can’t cook today. So, I have packed your lunch with a leftover worth repeating. This next Call for Entries has a really low entry fee and invites you to wallow in the excess of the supersized.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Annmarie Sculpture Garden (an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute) for Supersize: Bigger is Better?. The entry fee is only $20 for up to four pieces, and this is an excellent opportunity to GIVE IN TO EXCESS. Take a look!

CALL for ENTRIES: Supersize: Bigger is Better?

What fuels our fascination with obscene quantities and obsessive amounts? From supersized to overstuffed, from bulk to buy-one-get-one, we are in a constant quest for more, more, more; yet we decry the after-effects of over-consumption. How do artists interpret these ideas in their work? This exhibition explores the art of the supersized. The jury seeks work that tackles the absurdity of art and life on a grand-scale. From humorous depictions to critical commentary, the jury seeks work that address these issues through their scale, proportion, and witty approach.

Supersize will be installed in the spacious Mezzanine Gallery of Annmarie Sculpture Garden’s Arts Building. With over 4000 sq ft of exhibition space, moveable walls, high ceilings, tile floors, an Arakawa hanging system, Internet access, and electricity, the Mezzanine Gallery can accommodate all sizes and types of installations. As Annmarie includes a thirty acre sculpture garden, outdoor works will also be included in Supersize.

ELIGIBILITY: All media types are welcome. The exhibition is open to all artists age 18 and older working in the U.S. Video entries must be submitted on DVD, playable on QuickTime or RealPlayer, and no more than 30 minutes in length.

DVD or computer based works must be exhibited on equipment provided by artist. Internet access is available. Bases and pedestals must well-balanced and sturdy. Annmarie has a limited number of bases available, please inquire. All frames must be black or silver and simple in design. All works that will be hung on the wall must have brackets that work with the Arakawa hanging system. More information on this system will be provided upon acceptance.

DEADLINE: March 31, 2011 is the deadline for your application.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of final acceptance status via email by April 14, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a $20 non-refundable entry fee for up to four entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card. Each entry must be submitted with three images of the artwork, including one overall view of the artwork, one detail shot, and one installation shot.

ABOUT the ANNMARIE SCULPTURE GARDEN: An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, Annmarie is a thirty-acre public sculpture garden and arts center located in scenic Solomons, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. The sculpture garden features a walking path which meanders through the forest, past permanent and loaned sculpture, including more than thirty works on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art. The garden also presents a variety of special events, gallery shows, and engaging public art programs. The new Studio School offers creative classes taught by a talented faculty. The award-winning Arts Building, which opened in May ‘08, is a 15,000 sq.ft. museum-grade exhibition space that includes two large galleries, a gift shop, café, and a sunny patio that offers lovely views of the outdoor sculpture.
