When I think of beach food, I long for a crab boil on the beach or Beafort stew with boiled potatoes and bits of corn on the cob. One day maybe I’ll get to have a crab boil on a beach in Maryland for the true experience. Ahh, Memorial Day is never far away when Beaufort stew creeps back into my consciousness. This call is all about the shoreline. Whatcha got for this theme?

Shorelines Biennial

Shorelines takes a national and international glance at excellence in coastal art. No matter what medium, whether representational or abstract, 2D or 3D, Shorelines brings together those artists who identify with coastal living and fine art from all over the nation and world. The theme of Shorelines is not limited to ocean views and wildlife. Coastal Life is the theme, and how you interpret the theme is part of the show!

The first Shorelines exhibition was held in 2009, and was prize juried by Franklin Sirmans, currently of the LA County Museum of Art. Shorelines is currently planned to take place every two years. The Shorelines Biennial for 2011 will consist of cash prizes for the top selections, as well as a special Southwest Art Award.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists age 18 and over whose work is inspired by and reflects upon coastal life, whether representational or abstract.

MEDIA:
All media are accepted for entry.

DEADLINE:
Posted or by email by June 1, 2011.

NOTIFICATION: Entrants will be notified of acceptance or decline on or before September 1, 2011 by email at the address submitted on the entry form.

ENTRY FEE: $20 for first entry; $10 for each additional entry. Entry fees are non-refundable. Payment may be made by check (payable to Rockport Center for the Arts) or money order in U.S. dollars and must be included with entry. You may also easily pay with PayPal via their website.

I love picnics. Many of you probably conjure images of pretty blankets stretched on soft green grass and baskets of sandwiches and summer’s ripest fruits. Well, me too. But here in the Smoky Mountains, our first picnic excursion of the year is usually AT NIGHT. During the Synchronous Firefly celebration. For two weeks in mid-june, my night sky is lit by the synchronized flashing of fireflies. It is truly unbelievable. This Call encourages you to capture what you LOVE about the night sky! Artists are encouraged to submit work that explores or celebrates the night sky, or the stars. The work in this exhibit should reflect the deep, positive connection that human beings can have with the night. Night Visions IV Exhibit will be part of Celebrations of the Night.

This year, Night Visions IV will coincide with the 53rd Anniversary of the International Dark Skies movement, which began in Flagstaff in 1958. Night Visions is a partnership between the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition and Flagstaff Cultural Partners.

Like many of you, I frequently “wing it” in the kitchen. I like the idea of cooking with whatever you have on hand and making adjustments according to taste along the way. However, while editing a recipe card for The Lodge at Buckberry Creek recently, I realized there is a certain comfort in knowing the exact amount of cream and vanilla in bread pudding. There is comfort in not guessing the temperature or constantly checking the oven to see if your concoction is ready. JUROR: Axis Gallery is pleased to have Dena Beard as juror for the 6th National Juried Exhibition. Dena Beard is Curatorial Assistant at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA).

For the MATRIX program at BAM/PFA she assists with site-specific projects by national & international emerging artists, including Ahmet Ogut, Omer Fast, Futurefarmers, Brent Green, Paul Chan, Martha Colburn, Mario Garcia Torres, Trevor Paglen, Tomas Saraceno, Allison Smith, and Tris Vonna-Michell, among others. Independently, she curated the Lending Library exhibition series in Oakland & San Francisco, featuring the research materials of Desiree Holman, Trevor Paglen, Kevin Killian, Tom Marioni, Colter Jacobsen, Amy Franceschini, Stephanie Syjuco, among others.

Dena is currently working on Take Up Room on the Floor, a project about physical and virtual embodiment, and a solo exhibition featuring the artist Lutz Bacher. Prior to joining the staff at BAM/PFA, Dena was Curatorial Associate at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, an alternative art space that presented 16–18 exhibitions annually. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an M.A. in Art History, Theory, and Criticism.

Food and Wine, of course. I have delusions of grandeur each and every time I watch Top Chefs that I could win that show and have my work featured in F&W. Surreal Visions

SlowArt Productions presents the group thematic exhibition, Surreal Visions. This exhibition will focus on art inspired by the surreal and will be held at the Limner Gallery.

Eligible are all forms of surreal and visionary figurative art. All interpretations of the theme “Surreal Visions” will be reviewed and considered.

ELIGIBILITY AND RESTRICTIONS: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 72″ no wider than 120″. Sculptural work must fit through a standard height, 36″wide entry door.

DEADLINE: The final postmarked deadline is June 30, 2011. Entries must be postmarked or submitted via email by this date.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of acceptance or non-acceptance no later than July 20, 2011. Results will be posted on or before this date at: http://www.slowart.com/results. Notification will be made via email and/or by mail with the return of materials in the SASE provided by the artist. Artists who do not include the SASE because they do not want their submission materials returned must provide a self addressed stamped #10 (letter size) envelope if they wish to be notified by mail.

All artists who provide a working email address will be notified via email, if no email or return envelope is provided, artists will only be notified if accepted to exhibit. Type or print your email address clearly, if a mistake is made reading it you will not be notified. Read the notification page for details of the notification policy.

ENTRY FEES: There is a $35.00 entry fee for one to four artworks entered, presentation is by digital files. There is a $5.00 fee for each additional artwork above four. Details of 2D artwork count as an additional artwork. Sculptors may provide one additional view per artwork without cost. Artists accepted to exhibit will not be charged additional fees of any kind. Payments may be by check or money order payable to SlowArt Productions, or by credit card using PayPal.

SALES: All works in the show must be for sale. The gallery will take a 30 % commission on all sales. Sale price is determined by the artist.

EXHIBITION and AWARDS: Winning artists will be featured in a group exhibition at the Limner Gallery, September 3 – October 1, 2011. The exhibition will also be displayed on the Limner Gallery web site. One artist will be awarded a two page display in Direct Art Volume #19, Fall 2012 issue. Remember when the electric kitchen mixer was only a dream? Well, no, I don’t either, but you have at least contemplated what it was like BEFORE we had electrical conveniences. I, personally, don’t think I have the motivation or arm strength to deal with a manual egg beater. But, I have no doubt that someone somewhere thought that an electric hand mixer was a ridiculous, impossible dream. This next Call may test your ability to imagine the future, but I encourage you to be open to the possibilities. Always be an optimist…

*Editor’s Note: I encourage you to think about this Call with an open mind. I was very hesitant to publish it because it is vague and unclear; however, after a discussion with the Gallery, I think they are just trying to keep their “secret technology” under wraps until the opening. But to help you a little, there is an ACTUAL show, not just an online show. There is an ACTUAL opening, but you don’t have to send your work… only .jpgs. I have a theory on the technology, and if you email me we can compare theories. I’ve wasted a lot of entry fees, but I think this $5 is worth being a part of the mystery.
