Gone are the days of bitter and boiled little cabbage-like veggies that your mother forced you to eat. Celebrate the roasted sprout with rosemary and a squeeze of lemon. Live a little. Enacting Queerness

Enacting Queerness uplifts ideas, actions, and/or persons that exist out of the norm in terms of their gender and/or sexuality. It celebrates the reclamation of deviant identity as an empowering one. Whether queer identified or not, socially we have been brought to recognize these acts of identity reclamation. This exhibition aims to uplift these revolutionary ways of existing.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists are invited to submit their artwork pertaining to the theme for the exhibition, which will take place in a space on Elm Street in Downtown Greensboro, NC for one night only.

DEADLINE: May 15, 2011

ENTRY FEE: No entry fee necessary. You just have to pay for the shipping of your polished work to and from their space.

SALES: No commission will be taken out of what is sold.

While in Phoenix recently, I discovered that our hosts were lucky to have an orange tree in their back yard. Every morning I went out back to the sweet smell of orange blossoms and the overwhelmingly loud buzzing of bees. I am inspired by the smell and sound. I wonder if I can get an orange tree to grow in my Smoky Mountain yard? This next Call is from California — where they have no problem getting orange trees to grow either.

Check out this Call for Entries from Sebastopol Center for the Arts (in California) for Bibliophoria II. The entry fee is a little high for non-members, but you’ve gotta love book shows. Book shows are less common than you think so the risk could be worth it. Take a chance…

ELIGIBILITY: Sebastopol Center for the Arts invites artists living in the U.S.A. to submit work to Bibliophoria II.

MEDIA: We are looking for artwork created in the form of handmade artist’s books—using traditional bookmaking methods, or contemporary, unconventional structures, or made by altering existing books. Open to any method, in any media, on any subject.

NOTIFICATION: June 3, 2011 – posted on their website. Editor’s Note: If you hate the notification by post to website as much as I do, make sure you tell them AFTER they post results. This practice will become more and more common if you don’t speak up.

ENTRY FEE: SCA members, $15 per entry or 3 entries for $35 (membership is $40 annually). Nonmembers, $20 per entry, or 3 entries for $50. Maximum, 3 entries per artist.

JUROR: Sas Colby has more than forty years of experience making, exhibiting and teaching art. Her artwork has been exhibited and collected nationally and internationally. She made her first artist’s book in 1972 and is considered a pioneer in the field. A survey exhibition, Sas Colby: Twenty Years of Book Thinking, was shown in numerous venues in 1995. Colby has been a visiting artist in Australia and colleges throughout this country. She currently teaches workshops in Taos, New Mexico; Mallorca, Spain; and at the San Francisco Center for the Book.

AWARDS: $200 Best of Show; $50 Coordinators Award, and Merit Awards.

ART PUBLICATION: Three Magazines

Magazines are skinny lately.

Have you noticed?

I suppose online zines are shrinking the proverbial waist of the magazine industry just as online newspapers are making words on newsprint less and less common.

My advice? Eat a doughnut.

Most folks want the instant gratification of Google that ends in a digital zine. Information sought. Information found. But…

I still love the feel of paper, inky or slick, in my hands. I don’t own a digital reader because I still buy books. I subscribe to Conde’ Nast Traveler so I can fill my dreams with tours of gilded Russian palaces and sunny Italian beaches. I have recently re-subscribed to Rolling Stone after a hiatus of more than 10 years, and trust me, more than just Keith Richards needs some fattening up.

Eat a doughnut, folks.

So why am I babbling on about magazines? It is a question of legitimacy. I have had lots of conversations with lots of subscribers and friends about what constitutes artistic legitimacy or “making it,” aside from the ability to support oneself artistically.

Is it an academic pedigree or a resume of academic acceptance? Is it great reviews or stunning retail sales? Is it merely a well-hung cohesive show with “guts” and meaning? I don’t know, sorry. I can teach you how to get a show, but I can’t teach you how to be happy with it.

So, for all of you whose artistic dream is to be on the cover of the Rolling Stone, here’s a short menu of great art magazines…get to work.

1. The Artist’s Magazine. This is the first art mag I every owned. I was inspired by the work…wanted to be a painter…wanted my work to be featured among its pages. That hasn’t worked out for me so far, but their Annual Art Competition has a looming deadline so don’t procrastinate.

2. Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine (pronounced Jucks-tah-pozz) is a magazine created in 1994 by a group of artists and collectors including Robert Williams Fausto Vitello, C.R. Stecyk III, and Greg Escalante, to both help define and celebrate urban alternative and underground contemporary art. Anytime I have an art block, I find flipping through an issue of Juxtapoz inspires me.

Unique in the field of publishing, Juxtapoz emerged at a critical moment during the genesis of the late-20th Centuy underground art movement with the mission of connecting seminal modern genres like psychedelic and hot rod art, graffiti, street art, and illustration, to the context of broader more historically recognized genres of art like Pop, assemblage, old master painting, and conceptual art.

ARTnews Magazine

3. ARTnews is the oldest and most widely circulated art magazine in the world. Its readership of 200,000 in 123 countries includes collectors, dealers, historians, artists, museum directors, curators, connoisseurs, and enthusiasts.

Published eleven times a year, ARTnews reports on the art, personalities, issues, trends and events shaping the international art world. In clear, well-crafted language that is as comprehensible to the novice as it is to the expert, the magazine offers a lively, provocative, and visually stimulating package that informs as well as entertains with news dispatches from a worldwide network of correspondents, hard-hitting investigative reports, criticism, and opinion.

The Renewable Energy Roundup and Art Show is an annual, month-long event that highlights renewable energy and global climate change. The theme includes concepts that relate to renewable resources, global climate change, conservation, sustainable design, CO₂ neutral or energy producing ideas and renewable energy of all kinds (“renewable energy” is any energy source except fossil fuel, including nuclear energy). Artists whose work is created through reduced or alternative energy are also encouraged to apply.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists of all ages living in the United States are invited to apply.

MEDIA: Open to all media (including video, photography, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, installation, mixed media, performance, jewelry, glass, ceramics, fiber, and more).

Frogs’ legs are one of the better-known delicacies of French and Cantonese cuisine. They are also eaten in other regions, such as the Caribbean, Portugal, Slovenia, northwest Greece, Italy, Spain, and the Midwest southern regions of the United States. A type of frog called the edible frog is most often used for this dish. They are often said to taste like chickenbecause of their mild flavor, with a texture most similar to chicken wings. I like them with a side cucumber-dill yogurt. Yum. There is no witty food/art connection today–I just love frog legs, and jumped at the opportunity. hehehe. You cannot consume this next opportunity from Toad, at least not literally, but it does sound delicious. Take a look…

Toad comprises any number of species of artists of the creative order, often characterized by their exciting work, thick skin, and wart-like ideas. To maintain its lively form, Toad cultivates bimonthly issues with rotating editors and staff to ensure that the content stays fresh and diverse.

Every other month Toad showcases new poetry, prose, and visual art. As an ever-evolving amphibian, the editors of Toad select artists (“toadists”) from one of three pools: the first is a flourishing man-made pond, supplied with recommendations offered by previous contributors. The second is their sportive, always popular pool of open submissions. Lastly but not leastly, is the puddle-wonderful artistic response forum, which collects creative kickback from readers to establish an art orgy for all to enjoy.

MEDIA: They want it all: videos, music, collaborative projects, ekphrastic works, genre-crossing/bending art, and of course, all the usual suspects with Verbal Kint included.

DEADLINE: Toad accepts submissions year-around.

Everyday around 11am I post “what’s for lunch” hoping it will nourish you creatively for the day. Many of you receive my posts by email making them breakfast for you–the most important meal of the day. With my own art show only days from opening, I can’t cook today. So, I have packed your lunch with a leftover worth repeating. This next Call for Entries has a really low entry fee and invites you to wallow in the excess of the supersized.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Annmarie Sculpture Garden (an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute) for Supersize: Bigger is Better?. The entry fee is only $20 for up to four pieces, and this is an excellent opportunity to GIVE IN TO EXCESS. Take a look!

CALL for ENTRIES: Supersize: Bigger is Better?

What fuels our fascination with obscene quantities and obsessive amounts? From supersized to overstuffed, from bulk to buy-one-get-one, we are in a constant quest for more, more, more; yet we decry the after-effects of over-consumption. How do artists interpret these ideas in their work? This exhibition explores the art of the supersized. The jury seeks work that tackles the absurdity of art and life on a grand-scale. From humorous depictions to critical commentary, the jury seeks work that address these issues through their scale, proportion, and witty approach.

Supersize will be installed in the spacious Mezzanine Gallery of Annmarie Sculpture Garden’s Arts Building. With over 4000 sq ft of exhibition space, moveable walls, high ceilings, tile floors, an Arakawa hanging system, Internet access, and electricity, the Mezzanine Gallery can accommodate all sizes and types of installations. As Annmarie includes a thirty acre sculpture garden, outdoor works will also be included in Supersize.

ELIGIBILITY: All media types are welcome. The exhibition is open to all artists age 18 and older working in the U.S. Video entries must be submitted on DVD, playable on QuickTime or RealPlayer, and no more than 30 minutes in length.

DVD or computer based works must be exhibited on equipment provided by artist. Internet access is available. Bases and pedestals must well-balanced and sturdy. Annmarie has a limited number of bases available, please inquire. All frames must be black or silver and simple in design. All works that will be hung on the wall must have brackets that work with the Arakawa hanging system. More information on this system will be provided upon acceptance.

DEADLINE: March 31, 2011 is the deadline for your application.

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of final acceptance status via email by April 14, 2011.

ENTRY FEE: Artists must submit a $20 non-refundable entry fee for up to four entries. Entry fee must be paid by check, money order, or credit card. Each entry must be submitted with three images of the artwork, including one overall view of the artwork, one detail shot, and one installation shot.

ABOUT the ANNMARIE SCULPTURE GARDEN: An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, Annmarie is a thirty-acre public sculpture garden and arts center located in scenic Solomons, Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. The sculpture garden features a walking path which meanders through the forest, past permanent and loaned sculpture, including more than thirty works on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art. The garden also presents a variety of special events, gallery shows, and engaging public art programs. The new Studio School offers creative classes taught by a talented faculty. The award-winning Arts Building, which opened in May ‘08, is a 15,000 sq.ft. museum-grade exhibition space that includes two large galleries, a gift shop, café, and a sunny patio that offers lovely views of the outdoor sculpture.

ART PUBLICATION: International Survey

Crussell Fine Arts is pleased to announce an open call for our summer 2011 reference journal: International Survey. This fine art periodical will be a reference book for curators, gallery directors and collectors, which will assist them in the development of shows and collections.

ELIGIBILITY & MEDIA: Artists who work in all medias to submit three outstanding pieces created within the past two years. Selected artists will be included in the summer 2011 edition of International Survey with a single image of their work and direct contact information.

DEADLINE: All submissions should be postmarked by May 1, 2011.

The end result of that oversight is over-baked brownies, extra-crunchy crostini, dried-out lasagna and the more-than-occasional burned frozen pizza… not to mention the frantic run to the oven while muttering explicatives after realizing that I am too late to save tonight’s dinner. My insides are a little surprising–sometimes sweet, sometimes sour. How do you see yourself? Never considered it? Think about it now because this next call is all about self-portraiture.

The Power of Self 2011 is an international, all-encompassing open call for artwork that celebrates the self-portrait, awarding one year of your life, paid for.
